EP22: Key Differences: Games-Based Approaches vs the CLA

In this episode, Alex Sarama discusses the differences between a games-based approach and a constraint-led approach (CLA) in basketball coaching. He emphasizes that while a games-based approach may be enjoyable for players, it lacks the intentional use of constraints for skill adaptation that the CLA offers. Alex explains that a games-based approach originated in the 1980s as a way to make physical education lessons more enjoyable and improve problem-solving skills. He demonstrates how manipulating constraints and creating specific environments can enhance skill development and decision-making in players. Alex also provides examples of how the CLA can be applied to common small-sided games in basketball, such as one-on-one, three-on-three chaser games, and three-on-three pass keep away. Key Takeaways: 2:40 - Differences between the CLA and a Game-Based Approach 5:00 - Similarities between the CLA and a Games-Based Approach 7:45 - Ecological Dynamics vs Information Processing 10:30 - Functionality vs Tactical Understanding 14:45 - Questioning 19:45 - Progressions & Regressions vs Complexity & Simplicity 24:00 - Examples Articles Mentioned: Why the Constraints-led Approach is not Teaching Games for Understanding: A Clarification https://www.researchgate.net/publication/283519505_Why_the_Constraints-Led_Approach_is_not_Teaching_Games_for_Understanding_a_clarification Teaching Games for Understanding and Situated Learning: Rethinking the Bunker-Thorpe Model https://www.researchgate.net/publication/44164225_Teaching_Games_for_Understanding_and_Situated_Learning_Rethinking_the_Bunker-Thorpe_Model Links: Website: http://transformingbball.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/transformbball Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/transformingbasketball/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@transformingbasketball Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/transformingbasketball/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@transforming.basketball

Here is another article in my series about teaching games. Last time I spoke about the responsibilities the person has who teaches the game. This time I want to cover what is expected of the people learning the game. After all, the teacher will not get anywhere if no one is willing to actually learn the game. So, as a learner there are certain things you have to try and do to make the rules teach easier for everyone. Continuing my series of articles about teaching games, in this article I want to talk about what responsibilities the teacher has. It's not always obvious, but when you teach a game, you're not done after explaining the rules to the group. You have to continue to keep an eye on things, to make sure everyone plays correctly. You also have to be ready to answer questions during the game. That's a lot of responsibility to shoulder. I'm delighted to speak to Dr Stephen Harvey in this week's episode. Stephen is Professor in Sport Pedagogy at Ohio University. His research is focused on teacher/coach pedagogy and practice and its influence on student/player learning. Stephen is a former junior international field hockey coach and currently works with organisations such as USA field hockey and the United States Olympic Committee in a coach development and education role. He has successfully completed international coach educator/developer qualification and was previously a coach educator with England Hockey. Stephen is an experienced licensed soccer and badminton coach. In 2016 he was honoured as a Research Fellow by the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) America due to his extensive contributions to research in both physical education and sports coaching.  Stephen is particularly interested in game-based approaches to teaching and coaching. And it's this topic that forms the basis of our discussion in this episode.

I have mentioned it on this blog before, but my favourite way of being taught a new game is by diving right in. Teach me only the absolute minimum, just so I roughly know what sort of game we're playing and get an outline of what I'm trying to achieve and then let me start taking my turn. It's the sort of style of teaching that Paul Grogan of Gaming Rules advocates and it's probably the best option for demoing a game at a convention as well. I want to continue my series on how to teach board games to others by talking about how you can learn the game yourself or ask others to learn it for themselves. After all, you can't teach others until you know how to play it yourself and you're a better teacher if you've actually played the game yourself. Also, sometimes it's actually fun to learn a game and not always a big onus to expect others to learn a new game for themselves before you all meet up to play it. In my third article about teaching games, I want to talk about light games. The advantage of these games is, that they are easy to teach and quick to learn - and often also quick to play. So, this article should be rather short, but as we know, the easier something is, the better you have to execute it and given that lighter games are usually the sort of games new people to the hobby will come in contact with first, we need to do a good job teaching these types of games or we may miss a chance to grow our hobby. So, no pressure.

She has been teaching at MSU for 15 years and responsible for teaching up to 20 different sports to physical education majors, as well as a variety of theoretical courses. As a member and now Chair of the Department Curriculum Committee she was responsible for reorganizing the games education curriculum based on the Teaching Games For Understanding model. Prior to teaching at the college level, Dr. Gubacs-Collins taught K-12 physical education in Budapest, Hungary. Dr. Gubacs-Collins has received state and district awards, which included the New Jersey Outstanding College Teacher of The Year award as well as the Eastern District Outstanding Professional Award. She has also served as President of the New Jersey State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NJAHPERD). Dr. Gubacs-Collins' research has evolved through several phases. First, she has published articles and presented in several national and international conferences regarding the implementation of a Tactical Approach to Teaching Games in Physical Education, Sport Education and Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility. Within this area, most recently she developed the idea of a Socratic Gymnasium which is the combination of the above three methods in the teacher education setting. Her latest work has been published in The Physical Educator, one of the leading journals in the field of Physical Education Pedagogy. Most recently, based on over 25 years of teaching experience, Dr. Gubacs-Collins has changed her focus to understanding the potential negative factors that inhibit teachers from implementing change. Among such inhibiting factors she hypothesized that limiting beliefs developed through life and work place anxieties may be significant contributors to practitioners' lack of actual performance. This research has led Dr. Gubacs-Collins to the study of Meridian Based Therapies such as EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) and to Kinesiology Muscle Testing. To advance her studies Dr. Gubacs-Collins has received several certificates in the above-mentioned areas and is using her knowledge of the past many years to develop a research line and course of study in the effectiveness of Meridian Based Therapies and Kinesiology Muscle Testing. In addition, Dr. Gubacs-Collins is working with athletes and performers from MSU to reduce and eliminate performance anxiety in their respective fields. She, herself, also loves to perform and play sports and many of the sports she teaches she played and/or coached on a competitive level at one time or another. Her latest achievement was to complete a feat of winning the Ridgewood Country Club Golf Championship, a became the champion of all sports offered in this club; this was a first in the club's history. She developed a blueprint for winning and to helps people in all areas of life at MSU become the “champion” they were meant to be.Make sure to subscribe & review Lady Empire above for the opportunity to be featured!

We get into the history of the term “physical literacy” starting around 2000 with the obesity and inactivity crises in Canada.Glenn shares his definition and explains why getting hung up on a definition can be detrimental to implementing PL.Glenn reminds us that the kids in the PE class are the clients and a stakeholder. We discuss how physical activity, education and literacy differ and how he worked with non-PE teachers in schools to get kids physically active. If you haven't heard it yet, there is a new training methodology in soccer town called Play, Practice, Play. It's not really new. We've been doing it in the context of US Youth Soccer for more than a year now and you'll find correlation with an article titled Teaching Games for Understanding: A Comprehensive Approach to Promote Student's Motivation in Physical Education  published in 2017 (see Resources below for full citation). But it may be new to you. I know it's still new to many who are just coming into the sport and it can have a profound impact on how we look at the game. Let's talk about play, practice, play; what it means to players, coaches, and parents; and what effect it has on the way we look at the game.Practice Matters! As a former multi-sport athlete, the thing I remember the most and perhaps the thing that had the biggest effect on the rest of my life was practice. Games were fun and they certainly gave us a chance to measure progress being made in practice sessions, but practice is where the most growth and development happen. It's where we learn to work as a team, where we get the most guidance on work ethic and behind-the-scenes tips on how to play and improve, and where sweat is forged into gold. As a coach, I put a lot more time and attention into practice than I do into games. I tell my players that they own the games. I own the practices. I make the most difference as a coach on the practice field. That is my classroom. Games are players chance to show what they've learned. It makes sense to spend time thinking about practice & trying to find the best practice experiences that we can if we want to become better at the sport we love. It makes sense to emphasize practice if we want to maximize the development experience that youth sports gives us both on and off the pitch. This is what US Youth Soccer did when they re-designed the practice methodology. Play, Practice, Play vs the Four Phase SystemPlay, Practice, Play is now built into every grassroots coach's training education under US Youth Soccer. For coaches (and players) who have been around for a while, this new system of training stands in contrast to the older Four-phase system. It used to be that we were trained to deliver a warm-up phase to get bodies in motion without injury. That would be followed by three additional phases of training - each one progressively more complex than the last one, and all of them united around a common theme. An example of a common theme might be a focus on moving as a unit during a defensive phase of play in the defensive third. A progressive series might include warm ups, defending 1v1 down four channels, then defending 2v2 down two channels, then defending 4v4 down one channel, etc. In the fourth phase of this style of practice, we might execute a scrimmage with the hope of seeing the methods taught in training being used on the field in a game-like environment. This is a coach or curriculum based approach to training. It's designed to progress players through a series of increasingly more challenging scenarios so that at the end, players have hopefully acquired new skills relative to the main theme. this is the way I coached myself for several years and it's still being used in the more competitive training environments. There is nothing wrong with it, but modern thinking is that we lost a lot of players as a result. Especially in the grass roots programs, motivations to come play are not as focused on on structured development. Fun is a huge motivator. The four phase method of structuring training has more of a "work" based structure that Play, Practice, Play. Play, Practice, Play, on the other hand placed emphasis on game-like scenarios and fun. It's structured to put kids into game-like situations as soon as they show up on the field. The first phase of training is labeled the "Play" phase. It's the first thing that players are greeted with when they arrive. The thinking here is that if kids have "play" to ...

But this never allows the learning to happen. The moment when they are close to figuring it out is actually the sweet spot. So the players shouldn't think everything is easy and fun - it should be a little frustrating and uncomfortable. Design your practices like a video game designer: Create 'levels' that are within their reach, but it's a big stretch that might feel just out of their reach. So when they figure something out - ask them 'are you ready for level 2 now?' Use terms like 'power-up' and 'freeze' to mix up games during practice. We need to move away from practices that see us focusing on the cognitive and psychomotor – the thinking and doing aspects of learning so to speak – and focus instead on the whole child. It suggest that we can do that, in games teaching, by allowing children to try different sports, by showing them representations of the game, by exaggerating different aspects of the game and by adjusting the tactical complexity of the game. In this way children get the enjoyment and understanding that they need to, hopefully, engage in and enjoy the games they play at school

This week’s podcast looks at three pedagogical models (Sport Education, Teaching Games for Understanding and Cooperative Learning). The podcast suggests that while we are often comfortable with our daily practices we need to do more, try new approaches and explore new possibilities if we are going to help students have an authentic experience of physical education. Pedagogical models are positioned as being a ‘wave to the future’ and one way of providing meaningful, relevant and authentic experiences for young people.
