In this episode, you'll learn: * The real difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and why both matter * How imposter syndrome shows up at every level of sport, and what to do about it * Practical tools for building psychological safety and trust in high-performance settings * How to develop a reflective coaching style that supports long-term development * Why embracing uncomfortable thoughts can unlock consistent, world-class performance * A clear breakdown of self-determination theory and what it means for athletes and coaches This is essential listening for sports scientists, coaches, and practitioners working in elite environments, especially those looking to align peak performance with athlete wellbeing. About Julia Eyre Julia Eyre is a sports scientist and psychologist with extensive experience in elite sport across Europe and the U.S. Currently working with TSG Wieseck Football Academy and multiple German Olympic federations, Julia is also the founder of Whiteline Performance Group, which supports clubs, schools, and federations in creating holistic, human-first athlete development systems. I'm delighted to speak with Dave Bright and Dr Oliver Runswick in this episode. Dave is a coach and Senior Lecturer in Sport Coaching at Chichester University. His main research interests are in motor learning and its application to practical sport coaching. Dave has coached martial arts for 25+ years. And it was from his experiences in coaching that led him to do a Sport Science Coaching degree, then a Sport & Exercise Psychology Masters degree. Dave's current role requires him to develop undergraduate students as sport coaches, providing them with an awareness and understanding of the underpinning motor learning and coaching research. Dave is undertaking a PhD investigating the effects of cognitive load and autonomous task selection in motor learning. Ollie is a Senior Lecturer in the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King's College London. His research focuses on understanding and enhancing learning and performance in domains including sport, dance, education, and the military.  Ollie is the Editor in Chief of Perceptual and Motor Learning Skills at Sage Publishing and a Human Performance Technology Consultant providing consultancy in virtual reality applications, skill acquisition and motor learning, perceptual-cognitive skill, training/practice design, talent ID and development, vision in performance and performance systems. Ollie received a first-class BSc in Sport and Exercise Science from Swansea University, MSc in Human Movement Science from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, PGCHE from St Mary's University, and PhD from Liverpool Hope University where he studied perceptual-motor skills based with St Mary's University's Expertise and Skill Acquisition Research Group.   Dave, Ollie and I discuss a paper they co-wrote along with Dr Jenny Smith, Dr Philip Kearney which compares two learning conditions - task-related autonomy and cognitive effort. Research has shown that both feelings of autonomy (as supported by OPTIMAL theory) and cognitive effort (as supported by Challenge Point) can positively impact skill development. This research paper aimed to compare these two approaches to learning. Results showed no differences between the effects of autonomy and cognitive effort, but uncovered participants use of tactical learning to improve. We unpack the paper and discuss its real-world application for coaching settings.

The importance of a shared purpose, holding each other accountable and respecting the individual when it comes to building connection within the team. Mark discusses how his background in coaching tennis and performance coaching has influenced his approach to property. He explains the concept of apart hotels, which are converted guest houses that offer self-catering facilities and automated self-check-in. Mark also shares his experience with planning applications and the importance of building a strong power team.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Mark's background in elite sports coaching has influenced his approach to property investment, particularly in terms of goal setting, discipline, and resilience. Apart hotels are a type of accommodation that involves converting guest houses or bed and breakfasts into self-contained studios or apartments with self-catering facilities. Apart hotels straddle the line between hotels and serviced accommodation, offering a more flexible and modern approach to short to medium-term stays. Planning permission may be required for converting properties into apart hotels, but targeting guest houses with existing C1 planning use class can simplify the process. Building a strong power team and surrounding oneself with experts in various areas is crucial for success in property investment and management. BEST MOMENTS "I think some of it's lacks the substance, like just willing something into existence isn't necessarily going to make it a reality."  "It's about having the right team around you. It's having a power team that you can lean on, that as investors we don't need to know the answers to."  "I think there are lots of opportunities out there. I like it because it's not a crowded market. It's not a particularly competitive market. So there's scope to do some quite creative deals." "The main ethos is to create a community of like-minded investors who are there to support each other."  VALUABLE RESOURCES GET YOUR DEVELOPMENT FINANCE HERE: https://propertyfundingplatform.com/WharfFinancial#!/borrowerinitialregistration SOVEREIGN MAN PREMIUM INTELLIGENCE MEMBERSHIP https://dash.sovereignman.com/a/smc12m995/tpnpodcast SOVEREIGN MAN 4th PILLAR https://dash.sovereignman.com/a/4pmain/tpnpodcast ABOUT THE HOST Rob Smallbone is the author of the Amazon best-seller Buy-To-Let: How To Get Started as well as 101 Top Property Tips and Property FAQ's. Are we disciplined enough to win a Championship? Did we look perfectly in sync during our warm up? Did we follow our program to a tee, and execute it on time just like the strength coach told me to? Dr. Gearity aka Dr. G joins us from the University of Denver to discuss society in sport and how we view discipline as a major contributor to winning… or is it? Major companies and athletic programs have modeled themselves with military style leadership for a long time, but the outdated and often abused system may be holding us back. Check out this month's episode to hear why. Dr. Brian Gearity, is founding Director and Assistant Professor of the Master of Arts in Sport Coaching program at the University of Denver. Dr. Gearity has been a S&C coach for youth, high school, collegiate, and professional athletes, including stops at the University of Tennessee and Cleveland Guardians.  You can reach Dr. G online: @DrGearity on all social platforms.
