Professor Shane Pill from Flinders University in South Australia is one of the leading experts and researchers in coaching and sports education. He was recently awarded the Presidents Award by the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation for distinguished service to the profession. Shane discusses his transition from a physical education teacher in the 1980's to his role researching coaching pedagogies and specifically the game sense approach to coaching and teaching sport. He discusses the differences between pedagogical models of teaching skills through games and highlights the requirement for struggle to promote growth and development. Shane is a wealth of knowledge in this area and his explanations will hopefully go towards coaches being able to apply some of the methods he discusses to build more resilient and skillful athletes. Take away's from this episode are:1.That Kids and athletes play sports to play the game – the best way to prepare them for playing is by actually playing the game not by using one dimensional training drills that require little or no decision making. 2.A games based approach has to be purposeful and provide meaningful learning opportunities. 3.Athletes require some amount of struggle to learn and develop, but there has to be a struggle point – too hard and we lose the athletes, too easy and the learning process is not effective. This podcast is Part 1 of 2.

126 | Judi Missett Shares How She Kept Jazzercise in Business for 50 YEARS! Who or what do you listen to when you make business decisions? Judi Missett graduated with a BS in Radio and TV Production and theater from Northwestern University. In 1969, she started teaching a dance fitness class in Chicago. When demand quickly boomed, those classes grew into the dance fitness company that would become a cultural phenomenon. 50 years later, Jazzercise still leads the pack in health and fitness. As CEO, Judi manages a 125-person corporate team, oversees more than 8,200 franchises, choreographs Jazzercise routines, teaches classes and writes for the Huffington Post. Together with Jazzercise instructors, Judi has helped raise over $28M for a wide range of charitable organizations. Among her honors are Lifetime Achievement Awards from the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports; Enterprising Women's Hall of Fame; The President's Award from the Women President's Organization, twice winning San Diego Business Journal's "Women Who Mean Business" Award; and the Commmittee of 200's Entrepreneurial Champion Luminary Award. Are you struggling with knowing your worth in your business? Many people will look down on you. They’ll say you’re not educated enough. That you don’t have what it takes. That you lack experience. Maybe you don’t know the industry. But all of that doesn’t matter when you know your own sense of worth! Your gut, your head, and your heart are what you really need to listen to in business. When you do something wrong, at least one of those is going to hurt! You don’t need a fancy degree, or years of experience (the experience will come as part of your journey!) to be successful. Instead, you need to have that grit and perseverance, and know the value that you have to offer. Be willing to listen to your gut, your head, and your heart, and you’ll be amazed by your journey. This week’s guest on Success Unfiltered, Judi Missett, started a dance revolution with Jazzercise. Combining dance moves and fitness changed the industry: but it didn’t come easy. From starting off teaching in a Parks and Recreation department, to losing a half a million dollars with an infomercial, Judi has business lessons to share! Here are a few key secrets we talked about in this episode: Michelle introduces Judi Missett, founder of Jazzercise. Judi has been in business for 50 years: this is hard to do in the fitness and wellness industry or let alone any industry. Before founding Jazzercise, Judi would teach dance fitness classes at the local Parks and Recreation department. She had a contract with them for a percentage of all revenue, but when she went to pick up her check, they said NO! The Parks and Recreation department said that the amount was too high, and they didn’t want to give it to her. Judi stood her ground, and told the Parks and Recreation guy that she would be back later in the day to pick up her check, or she would take action. When she went to pick up her check, the guy wasn’t even there, but he left an envelope with the check. For Judi, that NO was not a real NO, but rather one where she was not given the respect that she had earned. Since that time, Judi has remembered who she is, and what she has to offer, and NO one can take that away from her. When Jazzercise was growing, the team decided to do an infomercial. But it ended badly! Judi said NO to continuing the infomercial, and decided to listen to her gut. “[I learned to] listen to my intuition and to believe in myself when that little voice inside says NO don't do this even if everybody else who has lots of knowledge tells you you need to. If it feels like it's not right that voice inside is the voice of truth and it won't ever lead you astray.” ~ Judi Missett That lesson cost her half a million dollars, but she had carried that truth with her ever since. When it comes to vetting investors or situations like Judi, with the infomercial, you should get to know the core of the company. Jazzercise is about connecting people: the infomercials were about selling product. The two did not go together. When things seem too difficult, it might be a sign that they are not working. How do you know when to pull the plug on your business? Judi says to be watching for signs: there will always be signs and messages for you! “Every step up has required saying NO” ~ Judi Missett Even when Jazzercise had to lay off people, they still kept growing. In fact, many of the employees that they laid off became franchisees. “Once you start to make those changes and move forward, even though it's hard, people trust more and more and more and then the changes aren't as difficult anymore.” ~ Judi Missett Change is hard, but you can find ways to make it a win-win for everyone! Judi shares what she would tell her younger self. Connect with Judi Missett: Jazzercise Website Get Judi’s Book Facebook Instagram Pinterest Twitter YouTube How Do You Sabotage Your Business Success? Why does it take a moment of desperation to send us to our knees in prayer? Sadly, it’s true. The thing is, God is always accessible, hears our prayers no matter how broken, and he wants to see good things happen in our lives. We can approach him anytime we need help, not just when we are desperate. As we talk to Debreon Davis about building authentic community we realized that part of growing a community of people we can love and love us in return will necessitate prayer. God, bring us the right women in our lives. Debreon Davis is currently the principal at Edmond North High School. Debreon grew up in Edmond, Oklahoma and attended college at Evangel University in Springfield, Missouri and the University of Central Oklahoma where she played basketball and studied Psychology. After graduating from college she went back to her high school alma mater, Edmond Santa Fe High School, where she taught Business classes, coached girls basketball and was the student council sponsor. During this time Debreon was also active with her church, serving as a sponsor for the youth group and children's ministry. Debreon then became an Assistant Principal at Memorial High School where she worked for 5 years with various grade levels, building strong relationships with students and teachers with a strong focus on curriculum development. Debreon started volunteering with YoungLife and developed numerous relationships mentoring young ladies throughout their high school and college years. Debreon is now in her third year as the head principal at Edmond North High School, doing what she loves the most - leading and loving our teenagers. Debreon and her family are active members of the Edmond and Oklahoma City community and believe in the importance of servant leadership. Debreon went through the OKC SALLT Young Leaders class in 2017-2018 and cherished the relationships built and challenge to love and serve our community. In 2017 Debreon was the recipient of the National Milken Educator Award, known as the “Oscars of Teaching”. This award is unique in that educators do not apply for or know when they have been nominated, the Milken Foundation finds its candidates and surprises them in school assemblies across the nation each year. Earlier this year, Debreon received the President's Award from the Edmond Public Schools Foundation for her commitment to excellence in education and high levels of learning for all students. Debreon is a women who is passionate about life and the importance of loving everyone we encounter. Today's episode is sponsored by Mom's Best Friend. The Research Chefs Association 20th Annual Conference and Culinology Expo was held in Puerto Rico, and it was a great success! Even though it was a further trip for some of the members, we still had over 800 chefs, product developers, and professionals attend. Multiple cooking competitions, including the first ever food-waste competition, were held at the student and professional levels. Top notch educational sessions covering topics from emerging food trends and cutting edge technology were presented. I sat down with a few of the members and leaders, including Pinnacle Foods' Chef Christopher Posner and Cherilyn Whitehouse, Tyson Foods' Dr. Jason Behrends (new RCA President), and Pecan Deluxe Candy Company's Chef Kami R. Smith (RCA Director of Membership) to get their thoughts about the conference and why they love it. I also chatted with Allan Hancock College's Culinology Program Coordinator Christine M Bisson about a crowdfunding effort she's doing to spread the word about Culinology on her college's campus. The funding campaign ends on April 17, so get donating! Finally, this year, I received a President's Award for the podcast efforts and for featuring the research chefs of the RCA. Want to join the conversation? Let me know if you have some R&D advice to share or are interested in becoming a sponsor.
