Send us a Text Message.Check out Outer Lore! In January of 1812 a schooner named The Patriot disappeared off the coast of North Carolina's Outer Banks. This dangerous stretch of coastline has claimed some 3,000 ships, earning it the nickname "Graveyard of the Atlantic." Aboard the Patriot was Theodosia Burr Alston, daughter of infamous US vice president Aaron Burr, on her way to visit her father in New York. The disappearance of The Patriot and its famous passenger remain a mystery to this day. The discovery of a portrait resembling Theodosia that supposedly washed up with a shipwreck along the Outer Banks only adds to the mystery. Is the Nags Head portrait really Theodosia Burr? The extraterrestrial comedy podcast where we probe the daughter of Aaron Burr, sir, but they don't teach you about this in Hamilton. We breeze through the late 1700's in to the early 1800's as we learn all about the close relationship between Aaron Burr and Burr's daughter, Dear Theodosia. But Burr had to flee the country and when Burr returned to America, Theodosia faced some difficulty in returning to her father. The remnants of that difficulty may still plague the Bald Head Island shoreline today. There be pirates in these waters, Jaaaaaaaack. There be spirits in these waters, Jaaaaaaaaaack. Alongside that we ponder who shot first aka who was the Han between Burr and Alexander Hamilton? We also question whether there is an official honeymoon record? Are Moonwalker and Greybeard married? Change the name and nobody knows… All that and more on this week's file. As we introduced the circumstances of today's probe, we felt obligated to include the ‘Aaron Burr, Sir' tune from Hamilton created by Lin-Manuel Miranda and performed by the Original Broadway Cast of Hamilton (via Atlantic Records). History Worth Knowing: The Crazy Life and Dark Death Of Theodosia Burr - A Legend And Mystery Still TodayTheodosia Burr Alston, the beloved daughter of disgraced vice president Aaron Burr, left the port of Georgetown, South Carolina on the schooner Patriot in 1812 and was never seen again. Throughout the 19th century, newspapers titillated readers with lurid stories of her alleged fate, including captivity, murder, and deathbed confessions of former pirates. Yet her tragic disappearance has remained a mystery for over two hundred yearsHistory Worth Knowing: The Crazy Life and Dark Death Of Theodosia Burr - A Legend And Mystery Still TodayKURIOUS - FOR ALL THINGS STRANGE
The Female Stranger is one of Alexandria, Virginia's best known pieces of folklore. According to legend, a woman and her maybe-husband travelled from outside of the country to Alexandria in 1816, only for her to die from an illness a few weeks later. Though sad, this story wouldn't have lasted over 200 years if it weren't for one crucial detail: she and her husband were adamant that no one knew their names. Even her doctor and nurses were sworn to secrecy. After she died, her husband used borrowed money to pay for an elaborate marble headstone, inscribed with a Bible verse, a poem stanza, a sentence describing his own pain at her death, and her age — but not her name. The first line of the headstone says, "To the memory of a female stranger." This secrecy has left people familiar with the mystery no choice but to speculate. Today, theories span the gamut, with some believing the Female Stranger was in a star-crossed lovers situation and others believing she was Theodosia Burr, the lost-at-sea daughter of Aaron Burr. But first, Zoey is here with her long-awaited Something Dreamy: lucid dreams!Sources: https://hauntedhospitality.wordpress.com/2023/02/21/to-the-memory-of-a-female-strangerVisit us on Social Media! At first glance, the name Theodosia pops out in the eyes of many broadway-enthusiasts. With the success off the widely popular musical Hamilton, “Dear Theodosia” stood out in a soundtrack full of instant classics. The ballad told of a love between a father and his daughter, but many people have never explored the tragic life of Theodosia Burr. Presumed dead after being lost as sea, many theories started to rise surrounding her mysterious vanishing. Her ghost is said to haunt her plantation The Oaks, along with the Outer Banks, Richmond Hill and Bald Head Island, where it is said that her spirit is chased by three headless pirates. The questions surrounding her disappearance seem to outnumber the answers. That may be the most tragic part of this entire tale. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/scspookshow/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/scspookshow/support
This week we're travelling back in time to the early 10th century, when Theodosia Burr, the only surviving daughter of Vice President Aaron Burr, boarded a ship to New York only for it to never arrive at its destination. Over two centuries later, and what happened to Theodosia is still a complete mystery, with only one clue in the form of a portrait of a beautiful woman.
In post-American Revolution New York City, Theodosia Burr, a scholar with the skills of a socialite, is all about charming the right people on behalf of her father—Senator Aaron Burr, who is determined to win the office of president in the pivotal election of 1800. Meanwhile, Philip Hamilton, the rakish son of Alexander Hamilton, is all about being charming on behalf of his libido. When the two first meet, it seems the ongoing feud between their politically opposed fathers may be hereditary. But soon, Theodosia and Philip must choose between love and family, desire and loyalty, and preserving the legacy their flawed fathers fought for or creating their own. "Love, Theodosia" by Lori Anne Goldstein is a smart, funny, swoony take on a fiercely intelligent woman with feminist ideas ahead of her time who has long-deserved center stage.
Burr… it's cold in here! There must be some ghosts in the atmosphere! A mansion in upper Manhattan is haunted by an upwardly mobile widow (who may or may not have murdered her husband with a pitchfork). Then, not-so-dear Theodosia Burr's Christmas Vacation is commandeered by Pirates.
On December 31, 1812, Theodosia Burr Alston boarded The Patriot, a ship that was to take her, a friend of her husband, and a small crew from South Carolina to New York to reunite with her disgraced father, Aaron Burr. However, the ship and all on board disappeared and were never seen again. On this episode we are discussing what let to Theodosia getting on that ship and all the possible explanations as to what happened to it. Plus, Christina is throwing out the wildest theory yet! "A" is for Alston, Joseph [ca. 1778-1816]. Governor. Although admitted to the bar in 1799, Alston devoted his career to the management of his extensive rice plantations in All Saints Parish. In 1801 he wed Theodosia Burr, daughter of Vice President Aaron Burr. Alston was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives and was its Speaker, 1805-1809. His support of upcountry demands for reapportioning the legislature led to the Great Compromise of 1808 and a constitutional amendment apportioning the House based upon population and taxable wealth. In 1812 he was elected governor by a narrow margin after a bitter campaign. His administration was one of the most discordant in the state’s history. Ironically, like another prominent 19th century political figure [James Chesnut]—Joseph Alston is primarily remembered as the husband of a legendary wife.
This week we cover the unsolved death of Rey Rivera. Although it was ruled a probable suicide, the mysterious circumstances around his death have created more questions than answers. Theodosia Burr Alston's name has found new life thanks to the Broadway musical "Hamilton." But what really happened to the daughter of Aaron Burr, who's life took a dark turn and ended, according to legend, at the bottom of the ocean. We discuss her story with Ben Steelman on this week's episode of "Cape Fear Unearthed," a StarNews Media-produced podcast that digs into the history books of Southeastern North Carolina. Cape Fear Unearthed is written, edited and hosted by Hunter Ingram. Additional editing by Adam Fish. A StarNews Media Production. In this episode, we finally pay homage to the amazing, awesome, incredible musical Hamilton, and discuss the mysterious disappearance of Theodosia Burr.
Today we are talking about two gals named Theodosia Burr. Both gals received well-rounded education (uncommon for gals at the time) but also both grew up in single-parent homes. Their connection to a Aaron Burr certainly gives a complexity to their lives but as you’ll find out, they were pretty complex themselves. We’ll do our best to keep them clear with using Mama Theo - she’s one married to Aaron Burr, and Daughter Theo - she’s the child of Mama Theo and Aaron Burr and the subject of the beautiful song in the musical “Dear Theodosia.” More info about these gals at www.galsguide.org Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/galsguide Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourgalfridaypodcast Twitter: https://twitter.com/GalsGuideGalaxy

On New Year’s Eve, 1812, Theodosia Burr Alston, First Lady of South Carolina and daughter of former U.S. Vice-President Aaron Burr, boarded a ship bound for New York City and was never seen alive again. More than 50 years later, in Nag’s Head, North Carolina, an old woman gave a doctor a painting, as payment for medical services, that the doctor came to believe was a portrait of Theodosia. But was it, and if so, how did it get there? These two unsolved mysteries bookend the unusual life and personality of Theodosia Burr Alston, an educated, talented woman, outspoken feminist, who was utterly devoted to her father Aaron Burr, the “gadfly” of the Early Republic, a controversial man accused of murder and treason, who ultimately lost both of the women he held most dear in his life. In drilling down into the twin mysteries of Theodosia Burr, historian Sean Munger sets the stage with colorful examples from her life and her father’s. In this episode you’ll not only meet various members of the Burr family, but you’ll encounter coastal pirates and unscrupulous beachcombers, two unidentified women buried in different places along the Atlantic coast who may or may not have been the real Theodosia, and follow in the footsteps of New England maritime historian Edward Rowe Snow as he tries (not entirely successfully) to solve the mystery in the 1940s. You can be the judge of whether the woman in the “Nag’s Head Portrait”—she is pictured on the far right of the image collage header for Second Decade podcast—really is Theodosia Burr Alston.
