In this episode of Waypoints, we return to the heart of one of the most important — and complex — conservation stories in the world of flyfishing: the state of Montana's Big Hole and the rivers of southwest Montana. Nearly two years after the New York Times released an article focusing on declining fish populations throughout the region, recent data from Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks suggests that there may be signs of hope and recovery for wild trout. But with mixed messages, differing perspectives, and strong emotions still swirling throughout the guide, outfitting, and recreational angling communities, the real story is far from simple. Joined by Jim Olsen – Fisheries Biologist for Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks in the Big Hole River basin – and by Eric Thorson – co-owner of Sunrise Fly Shop in Melrose, Montana – host Jim Klug digs into the facts, revisits the concerns, and examines what's really going on beneath the surface of these legendary waters. Why should this topic matter to anglers from outside of Montana and across the country? Because what happens in the Big Hole doesn't stay in the Big Hole. These rivers are ground zero for a larger conversation about climate change, water use, fishing pressure, wild trout resilience, and the future of angling in the American West. Whether you've fished these waters for decades, or plan to someday cast a line in Montana, this episode offers critical insight into how science, community, and conservation are colliding in real time — and what that means for the future of wild trout.Waypoints is brought to you by PatagoniaTo bring their gear to life, Patagonia is motivated by relentless curiosity and a passion for the wild. When we previewed the 2024 MLB season a few months back, it was pretty clear which teams would be in the basement of the baseball standings. With teams like the Chicago White Sox and Colorado Rockies living up to their projections, it's the Houston Astros and their 7-19 record that shocks us here on the Baseball Bar-B-Cast.Jake Mintz & Jordan Shusterman try to make sense of how the once powerhouse Astros sit in last place in the AL West and place among some of the worst teams in the league. They talk about the numerous injuries that have ravaged their pitching staff, the bad signings that they've made and why the front office consists of former MLB players that probably aren't qualified to make roster decisions. The guys then discuss their Good, Bad, Uggla for the week, in which they highlight Chicago Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong getting his first major league hit, a home run, during a day game at Wrigley Field after failing to get a hit when he was called up last season.Jake & Jordan also touch on what the reaction might be like for Shohei Ohtani when he plays in Toronto this weekend, the legend that is Cleveland Guardians pitching prospect Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson and highlight a few big matchups on the slate for baseball this weekend.1:24 - What happened to the Astros?24:18 - Could the Astros break it down?27:57 - The good34:37 - The bad40:35 - The Uggla49:27 - Weekend preview[Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Baseball league for the 2024 MLB season]Follow the show on X at @CespedesBBQFollow Jake @Jake_MintzFollow Jordan @J_Shusterman_
Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/591 Presented by: Visit Helena, MT Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors In this episode, we chat with Justin Waayenberg from Adipose Boatworks to delve into the groundbreaking world of resin infusion in drift boats, offering anglers the ultimate guide to navigating the transformative trends in boat durability and weight. As we unravel the secrets behind choosing the perfect drift boat for your adventures on the Missouri River and beyond, listeners are treated to invaluable safety tips, ensuring an unmatched fly fishing experience. This episode promises to equip you with the knowledge and inspiration to take your fly fishing journey to new heights, all while emphasizing conservation and the deep-rooted passion that connects us to the rivers we cherish. Episode Chapters with Justin Waayenberg on the Future of Drift Boats 3:05 - Justin discusses Adipose Boatworks' dedication to producing high-quality, top-tier boats, comparing their brand's quality to well-known companies. A significant focus of the discussion is on the adoption of resin infusion technology, a method that Adipose has been researching and perfecting for over three years. Additionally, he touches on the environmental considerations of their manufacturing process and how it compares to using materials like carbon fiber. 14:37 - He talks about their range of models and the design philosophy behind them. Adipose offers three main models: the Flow Skiff, the Runoff, and the South Fork Skiff. The Flow Skiff, their flagship model, is designed for the specific needs of western Rocky Mountain rivers, offering stability, low draft, and maneuverability in shallow waters and windy conditions. It's particularly suitable for fishing with three people, a common scenario among fly anglers. The Runoff model caters to those needing a boat that can handle bigger water and class three rapids, featuring a larger bow for more significant wave trains while maintaining maneuverability. Unlike traditional dory designs meant for navigating big rapids rather than fishing, Adipose's designs aim to provide a versatile solution for anglers. The third model, the South Fork Skiff, is a traditional design dating back to the late '80s, characterized by its flat bow (pram design) and low sides, making it ideal for two anglers. Despite not being a big seller, it has a cult following among those who appreciate its design for specific fishing conditions. 21:57 - Justin highlights the thoughtful design considerations that go into each model, such as optimizing space for gear storage, ensuring stability, and enhancing maneuverability. These skiffs are not only capable of handling multi-day trips on rivers like the Smith River in Montana but also excel in efficiently utilizing space to accommodate gear and providing a stable fishing platform. 29:24 - We talk about his home waters. His go-to river is the expansive Missouri River, stretching from Tosin and Three Forks to Fort Peck and the North Dakota border. This river offers a diverse fishing experience, from fly fishing for trout to casting for pike and carp. He also highlights Helena, Montana, as an ideal spot for anglers due to its central location. From Helena, numerous renowned rivers like the Blackfoot, Big Hole, Yellowstone, Madison, and others are within a two-hour drive, offering a variety of fishing experiences based on weather conditions and target species. 32:49 - For those seeking guidance or local insights on the Missouri River, Justin recommends several fly shops, notably Headhunters in Craig and Trout Montana in Cascade, known for their expertise and willingness to share information with anglers. Other notable mentions include Montana Fly Goods in Helena and Wolf Creek Angler. These shops are praised for their knowledgeable staff, extensive fly selection, and up-to-date river reports, making them invaluable resources for anyone fishing the Missouri River. 34:34 - Justin tells the optimal times and strategies for fishing the Missouri River. Early spring, particularly mid-April to late April, is recommended for experiencing significant dry fly hatches, with the river temperature climbing into the high forties and low fifties. For those willing to brave the colder temperatures, Justin notes that fishing conditions on February 19th, for instance, could allow an angler to catch a hundred fish in a day. The conversation also covers the importance of following weather patterns and choosing fishing techniques based on seasonal changes. Justin mentions that as the season progresses, anglers can expect a variety of hatches, including PMDs, Tricos, and Caddis, but advises caution in late summer and fall when weed growth can complicate fishing. 40:35 - The conversation touches on the geographical and ecological transitions around Helena, the Continental Divide, and the historical significance of areas like the Gates of the Mountain, described by Lewis and Clark. Justin highlights the rich fishing experiences available across different water types in Montana, from tailwaters to freestones and reservoirs, underscoring the state's commitment to natural river management and the absence of river stocking since the mid-20th century. 45:19 - We talk about an upcoming drift boat clinic organized by Adipose Boatworks, scheduled for April 27th. This clinic, offered in collaboration with Mending Waters Montana—a Helena-based veterans organization—aims to educate participants on all aspects of drift boat handling. Mending Waters Montana is dedicated to supporting veterans through fishing trips, rod building, fly tying, and offering access to exclusive private waters and popular fishing destinations like the Missouri River. The clinic covers a comprehensive range of topics from the basics of drift boat design differences, preparation and launching techniques, to rowing strategies and fishing from a drift boat. The event is free, with attendees encouraged to donate to Mending Waters Montana. Those interested in participating in the clinic can contact Adipose Boatworks via email to register. 48:41 - We dig into safety tips for drift boat handling, which are crucial for anyone attending their drift boat clinic or navigating rivers independently. Key safety advice includes: 1. Always Pull, Never Push: Justin emphasizes the importance of pulling rather than pushing to slow down and maintain control of the drift boat. This technique gives the rower more time to react to obstacles by slowing the boat's speed, allowing for better maneuverability. 2. Avoid Tying Knots in the Anchor Rope: A common mistake is tying knots in the anchor rope to prevent losing the anchor. However, Justin advises against this because, in situations where the boat starts behaving unpredictably, it's safer to let the anchor rope go to avoid the boat capsizing. The cost of replacing an anchor is minimal compared to the potential loss of the boat or, more importantly, a life. 3. Don't Drop Anchor in Fast Water: Dropping an anchor in fast-moving water can lead to dangerous situations, including the boat getting lodged and potentially sinking. Justin recounts a tragic incident on the Missouri River where a boat capsized and resulted in a fatality due to the anchor being dropped in fast water. He advises rowers to anchor in calmer water or eddies where the bottom can be seen and the risk of getting the anchor stuck is minimized. 4. Floor Release Anchor Systems: Most drift boats come with a floor release anchor system. In case of emergency, rather than reaching for a knife or attempting to untie knots, the best action is to simply release the anchor by stepping on the floor mechanism, allowing the boat to free itself from the anchor's hold. 53:26 - Justin provides a variety of restaurant options in Helena ranging from casual to slightly more upscale, catering to different tastes and budgets. For a local beverage after fishing, Justin suggests visiting one of Helena's breweries, highlighting Lewis and Clark Brewery as a nationally recognized establishment. 56:27 - Justin emphasizes the appeal of Helena, Montana as a family-friendly town with plenty of outdoor activities, devoid of the college town atmosphere. He also highlights local attractions like the state capital building and Blackfoot Brewery, and emphasizes Helena's growing scene that caters well to families and outdoor enthusiasts alike. When a section of the Big Hole River in southwest Montana ran dry in 1988, all eyes were on the future of one of the last remaining populations of arctic grayling in the lower 48. Out of the struggle, a collaboration emerged that change the future of the Big Hole - a future where human communities, wildlife and the ecosystems they depend on can thrive. And it might even serve as a model for how we can conserve species that are headed for the brink. Complete show notes are available at workingwild.us

This is our last episode concerning the Nez Perce War of 1877. In the aftermath of Big Hole, the Nez Perce continued east, traveling through the newly established Yellowstone National Park. As it became clear that they were not welcome in Crow Country, the Nez Perce decided to head north to Canada and sanctuary. After exiting Yellowstone, the Nez Perce swung north, clashing with the Army at Canyon Creek. After crossing the Missouri River, they found a site known as Snake Creek or Bear Paw to rest. Nelson Miles took advantage of their pause and besieged them in what would turn out to be the last battle of the war. Cold, hungry, and desperate, they laid down their arms and the war was over. The trauma of 1877 is still felt, but the Nimiipuu are still here. Take a listen. Have a question, comment, concern, or compliment? Contact us at americawarpodcast@gmail.com. Over 300 acres of wetland meadows in the Big Hole River have been transferred to the U.S. Forest Service for permanent conservation.
We continue our narrative on the Nez Perce War, concentrating on what happened at Big Hole Montana. After successfully eluding the army in Montana, they camped in the Big Hole valley, thinking they were safe. They were not. Colonel John Gibbon was in pursuit. In what could best described as a massacre in the making, Gibbon attacked the Nez Perce encampment early in the morning of August 9, 1877. As Gibbon's men fired into the tipis, killing women and children, the Nez Perce rallied, pushing Gibbon back. Besieged, Gibbon's command survived, as the Nez Perce bought time for their families to leave the valley. By the end of August, the Nez Perce were at the gates of Yellowstone National Park. In this episode we WadeOutThere with Lewis Hirsch, from Atlanta Georgia. Lewis first picked up a fly rod at the age of fourteen, when nothing else seemed to fit him. He quickly became involved in the US Youth Fly Fishing Team, and spent more time on the Nantahala River during his last two years in high school than he did in the classroom… Despite the fact that it was two and a half hours from home. After high school, Lewis packed up his gear and headed west to spend the summer guiding in Montana on the Big Hole and Beaverhead Rivers, where I met him on a fishing trip with my son. When he isn't chasing trout in Montana, Lewis guides in Northern Georgia. We discuss the Nantahala River, patterns and timing of feeding trout, and three basic casting techniques to solve some basic problems of drag. You can learn more about Lewis's fly fishing journey or schedule a guided trip by reaching out on Instagram at:@lew9635For more fly fishing stories, lessons learned, and artwork check out my blog and online gallery at Wadeoutthere.com
Rural businesses and agriculture producers in Montana have been awarded $1.3 million in federal grants to become more energy efficient. A nonprofit organization said an anonymous tip led them to recover a missing piece of expensive monitoring equipment from the Big Hole river last week.
In the spring of 2023, Montana's media started to highlight the fact that wild trout populations in Montana's Jefferson Basin – an area that includes the world-famous Big Hole, Ruby, Beaverhead and Jefferson Rivers – were in severe distress. Legendary for cold-water fisheries that have historically supported an abundance of wild trout, the rivers in Southwest Montana are currently experiencing what some are calling a population-level collapse. Is it too late to save Southwest Montana's wild fish numbers and fix are rivers, or is there still hope for the near future when it comes to our fisheries resources? That is the question that needs to be asked and answered. SAVE WILD TROUT is an organization that was launched to address this very crisis: a coalition of anglers, river advocates, concerned citizens, businesses, guides, and outfitters that have come together with the focused mission of protecting wild trout for the benefit of all. In this episode of Waypoints, Jim is joined by two founding members of SAVE WILD TROUT: Guy Alsentzer and Wade Fellin – two individuals who know a thing or two about the rivers of Southwest Montana. Guy is the Executive Director and Founder of Upper Missouri Waterkeeper, and Wade is a guide, lodge owner and outfitter on the Big Hole River.- View all podcast episodes by going to the WAYPOINTS podcast page- WAYPOINTS is brought to you by our friends at Fishpond. A nonprofit organization studying water quality along the Big Hole River said some of their monitoring equipment has gone missing.
Multiple efforts are underway to study the historic population crash among trout in the Jefferson Basin. One non-profit is starting a private research effort at the Big Hole River that they hope will supplement work being done by the state.
After historically low counts of brown and rainbow trout were found in three popular stretches of the Big Hole River, people have begun rallying around the 153-mile freestone river in southwest Montana. There's still pessimism for what the future holds, but the response has been positive. People genuinely want to find a solution and do what they can to pump life back into the famous Blue Ribbon trout stream. Nationwide fly fishing brands have joined the rallying cries, and there appears to be momentum building within the state, whether it be state funded or privately funded groups. The energy is good and necessary to carry out this all-hands-on-deck effort. But where will we be two months from now when the heat really takes a toll on the Big Hole and its trout? What happens in two years when the Big Hole no longer dominates the fly fishing news cycle? Will the state keep funding projects to their completion? There are still a lot of unknowns, and concrete answers are still years away.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

No, I am not talking about buying a trout stream and locking it up in a private club. I am talking about buying a piece of a trout stream, fixing (basically rewilding) the habitat, and then ensuring public access on the water for perpetuity. That's what the good folks at Western Rivers Conservancy do, and in this week's podcast I talk to Josh Kling [45:30], their conservation director, about projects they have on the Yakima and Big Hole rivers—two rivers treasured by fly fishers and in need of help. In the Fly Box this week, we have some great questions and tips from listeners, including: I fished a 5-weight line on my 10-foot 3-weight rod and liked it. Is there anything wrong with this? I foul-hooked a couple fish when using a dry dropper. Is there a way to avoid this? A good tip from a listener on getting the line to leader connection out of your rod tip by using the current. If I use a kayak for accessing wade fishing, should I park at the head of a pool and fish downstream or should I park at the tail and fish upstream? How should I fish deep, slow-moving pools with a mud bottom? Where in the US should I go on a fishing trip with my father? Why are fly rod grips from different manufacturers so different? I impacted my rod with a heavy bead-head fly. How should I inspect it to look for damage? A great tip for attaching the leader to a fly line when using a mono rig. When did fly fishers first use backing on fly reels? Can I throw big flies, as large as a 5/0, on my 8-weight rod? What flies should I use for spawning carp? How do I tell if a bass is on a bed and spawning as opposed to chasing bait? Why did fish strike my Prince nymph when I stripped it and not on a dead drift? Are rods getting stiffer and fly lines getting heavier?
Our destination is Twin Bridges, Montana otherwise known as trout mecca, with author, expert fly angler, and bamboo rod builder, Jerry Kustich, founder of Sweetgrass Rods. Some of the most fabled trout streams in the world converge on Twin Bridges—the Ruby, the Big Hole, the Beaverhead, and the Jefferson. Jerry has fly-fished these rivers for 30 years while building over 15,000 fly rods for Winston, then Sweetgrass Rods. He has written books and articles including the classic Fly Fishing for Great Lakes Steelhead, Around the Next Bend, and his latest, Holy Water. Today, he shares strategies for following the hatches, opening up the Ruby up to public access, chasing Alaskan Sheefish, and why the world still needs bamboo rods and how they are made. Stick around to the end for an experience on the Kamchatka peninsula that cemented Jerry's heart and soul for primal wilderness areas. With host, Steve Haigh Be the first to know about new episodes. Chris Dombrowski is a Missoula-based writer, poet, teacher, and fishing guide, and he's also the author of the excellent new book “The River You Touch: Making a Life on Moving Water.” If you're a longtime Mountain & Prairie listener, you probably remember Chris's first appearance on the podcast in which we discussed his first book “Body of Water” and his poetry collection, “Ragged Anthem.” Since that first conversation, Chris has become a great friend, sounding board, and supporter, and his generous spirit and creative commitment continue to be a huge source of inspiration for everything I'm trying to do here at Mountain & Prairie. - Like me, Chris is not originally from the West, but since moving here, he has built a meaningful, purpose-driven life that is deeply connected to the region's rugged land and powerful rivers. Whether guiding fishing clients on the Big Hole, foraging food with his family, or hunting birds with his dog Zeke, the West's wild places are a cornerstone of Chris's life– professionally, personally, and spiritually. His new book “The River You Touch” offers rich insights into his journey from his home state of Michigan to his now-home of Montana, as well as his personal evolution as a husband, father, friend, and community member. Beautifully written, surprisingly vulnerable, and extremely inspiring, “The River You Touch” is one of the best books I've read this year. - Chris and I connected virtually and had a fun conversation about the book, fatherhood, adventure, writing, and much more. We started by discussing how “The River You Touch” came to be, which has an interesting connection to our first podcast conversation. We talk about his process of combining poetic prose with non-fiction narrative, as well as his desire to explore ideas around masculinity and vulnerability. We talk a lot about Jim Harrison– their friendship, Harrison's genius, and his other-worldly work ethic. We discuss family, the blessing of having strong and tough wives, advice for aspiring writers, and more good book recommendations.
