Momentous Triumph for Voter Integrity as South Carolina Backs Citizens Only Voting Amendment

The legislative body in South Carolina has recently undertaken a significant measure to preserve the integrity of the electoral process. The proposal, named as The Citizens Only Voting Amendment, has the potential to modify the constitution of the state, ensuring that only American citizens can cast their vote in state elections. On May 2, the South Carolina House of Representatives threw their unanimous support behind the bill, endorsing it with a 105-0 vote. Earlier, Senate Joint Resolution 1126 sailed through the Senate having secured broad support with a 40-3 vote, as reported by Legal Newsline. Republican Senator Josh Kimbrell, the brain behind the bill, expressed his satisfaction at the progress made. In his words, 'South Carolina has made a commendable progress in preserving the sanctity of citizenship. We have made our stand clear—we will never entertain voting by non-citizens in any of our state elections.' He further emphasized the state's commitment to ease the process for eligible, law-abiding citizens, saying 'while we take a firm stance against voting by non-citizens, we are equally committed to facilitating legal and law-abiding citizens, both of this state and of the United States at large, to exercise their democratic rights in all our elections.' The respected Senator from Spartanburg is confident of the amendment winning the public's endorsement this fall. Recent data indicates an overwhelming support for the change among South Carolinians. Significantly, a staggering majority of approximately 80 percent seem to be favoring this shift of policy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For nine days, Susan Smith spoke to reporters, pleading for the safe return of her two sons, 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alexander. On October 25th, 1994, she alleged that an African American man carjacked her at gunpoint and kidnapped her children. However, on November 3rd, 1994, Susan's car was retrieved from a lake, along with the bodies of her young sons. That day, Susan revealed her story was a lie, and that she was the killer for whom the community searched. State Representative Tommy Pope was the 16th Circuit Solicitor in South Carolina and prosecuted the Susan Smith case. He discusses his work on the high-profile trial and reflects on her conviction 30 years later. Tommy Pope currently serves as the Speaker Pro Tempore in the South Carolina House of Representatives and serves as a South Carolina House Member from the 47th District. In 2008, he was awarded South Carolina's highest civilian honor, the Order of the Palmetto. In today's episode of Psych Talk, I discuss South Carolina House Bill 4624, entitled "Gender Reassignment Procedures". If you are not in South Carolina, I hope you listen to this episode and are able to take something away from it, as 321 anti-transgender bills have already been proposed across the United States in 2024. I give a brief overview of the bill, the problems with the bill, and how it will affect trans individuals, medical professionals, and mental health professions. I provide some research on outcomes of gender affirming care and how implementing this bill, and others like it, will likely cause more harm than good. Further, I give listeners action steps to oppose this, and other, bills, as well as some reflection questions for individuals to critically think on if they are in support of this or other anti-trans bills. South Carolina experienced a wild ride this week as the House took up the "Help, Not Harm" bill that bans genital mutilation surgery, puberty blockers, and hormone therapy for minors. RINOs in SC tried to weaken the bill but Riley Gaines caught wind and took to X (Twitter). What happened then? Hannah discusses the fallout of Gaines Tweet and where the bill is now. Also, the Iowa causas happened and Trump swept the state. Hannah provides demographic information that sheds more light on what happened and maybe why it happened, whether we should consider this thing in the bag for Donald Trump based on those numbers, and finally, she discusses a listener's question, "Why did Iowa evangelicals vote for Trump rather than DeSantis?" https://www.thehannahmillershow.com/podcasts/https://bobslone.com/contact/bob@bobslone.com

In 2022, LDF made its return to the Supreme Court for the first time in seven years. Every year, LDF submits a few amicus briefs in various civil rights cases to the Court, but an LDF attorney had not delivered an oral argument before the Court since Buck v. Davis. But in 2022, Deuel Ross, LDF's Deputy Director of Litigation, argued before the Supreme Court on behalf of Black Alabama voters in Allen v. Milligan. LDF challenged Alabama's unconstitutional congressional map that denied Black voters equal opportunity to elect their candidates of choice. The Supreme Court ultimately agreed with LDF and ordered Alabama to redraw a map that complied with the law. But arguments surrounding the redistricting cycle wouldn't stop there for LDF.  In October 2023, LDF returned to the Supreme Court to argue for fair representation for Black voters, this time for South Carolinians in Alexander v. South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP. The congressional map the South Carolina House implemented created a racial gerrymander —  Congressional District 1, which contains Charleston — that intentionally packed and cracked Black voters and prevented them from having equal access to elect candidates of their choice. LDF Senior Counsel Leah Aden argued on behalf of the South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP and an individual voter, Taiwan Scott. Thurgood Marshall Institute Director, Karla McKanders, sat down with Ross and Aden to discuss the importance of their cases, how they prepared to argue before the highest court in the U.S., and how their work is a part of LDF's deep history of safeguarding Black political participation. If you enjoyed this episode please consider leaving a review and helping others find it! The messaging strategy for securing funding involves demonstrating the cost-effectiveness of international aid, aligning with national security interests, and emphasizing success stories. The Ukraine conflict poses significant risks to global food security due to disruptions in fertilizer production, increased fuel costs, and the destabilization of food-producing regions. The impact extends beyond the immediate conflict zone to affect vulnerable populations worldwide.   RESOURCES: Aid Market Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-aid-market-podcast/id1698373554 Mike Shanley - LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/konektid-usaid-specialists/  Society for International Development : https://sidw.org Guest Bio: David Muldrow Beasley (born February 26, 1957) is an American politician and the former Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme.[1] A member of the Republican Party, he served one term as the 113th Governor of South Carolina from 1995 until 1999 before losing reelection to Democrat Jim Hodges. Beasley defeated his toughest competitor, former congressman and state senator Arthur Ravenel Jr., in both the primary and run-off, and went on to win the general election by a narrow margin of 50%–48%.[6] Governor   South Carolina had a strong economy while Beasley was governor, with unemployment at a record-low 3.5% in 1998. [7] Beasley often made known his Christ-centered beliefs and conservatism in a state known for its strong ties to Christianity and conservative politics.[8] Beasley strongly opposed gambling, which was legal in South Carolina until 2002.[9] At the time, many gas stations, convenience stores, and poker "casinos" were established across the state, and as Beasley supported legislation that would outlaw gambling, the video poker industry generated "Ban Beasley" billboards and radio ads.[10] Until 2000, the Confederate flag flew atop the South Carolina State House.
