Interview by Kris PetersFor a quarter of a century, American rock outfit The Used have dominated the global rock landscape, delivering countless albums that not only helped shape the course of musical history but also helped shape the lives of a good deal of music fans the world over.Bursting onto the scene with their self-titled debut album in 2002, The Used transcended normal music prejudices to become favourites of both consumers of music and critics, finding that elusive formula early on in their career while most bands finish their tenure still oblivious to how to find it.From The Used, the band went on to release In Love And Death in 2004, somehow topping the heights achieved on their first album, before solidifying their stature amongst the rock elite with 2007's Lies For The Liars. Now, in celebration of 25 years atop their field, The Used bring the party to Australia in a unique run of shows that sees them perform each of those three albums in their entirety in each capital city.Such is the demand for these special shows that several more have had to be added, more than half of which have already sold out. HEAVY recently sat down with bass player Jepha to dive deeper into the idea and the celebrations that look set to continue for some time yet."I'm excited, I'm ready to go," he enthused when we began. "We just ended a full US version, and we went to Europe for a few dates, then we took this month off, and now I'm already itching to go back out and move to Australia for a bit (laughs)."We mention the fact that more than half of the 21 shows are already sold out and ask how good it feels to know that people on the other side of the world are so hungry for their arrival."It's really exciting," Jepha smiled. "The best part is for our singer - because he lives in Sydney and has been out there about ten years now - he always has to come to us to rehearse and practice and everything, so he's always jet-lagged. Now the joke's on us that we are all flying over and will be jet-lagged and fucked the whole time, and he is going to be spot on (laughs)."Having had to add so many extra shows, The Used will now be in Australia for almost one month, so we ask Jepha if the band had already planned or budgeted in that extra time away from home."We didn't expect this much," he laughed. "We didn't expect it to go this long and to have multiple dates added and a lot of places selling out. That's all… not a shock… it's all better than we imagined."In the full interview, Jepha talks more about the tour and what fans can expect, learning the first three albums in full and any difficulties faced plus how the band will approach each night and bring their best to each performance. We dive deeper into each of the three albums and what they mean to The Used, his memories of recording each, the musical shift between each and how that reflected the growth of The Used musically, new music and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Branden Steineckert was a founding member of The Used and the driving force behind the band until they kicked him out for being sober in 2006. While that could crush a man, Branden dove onto wakeboarding for a couple of months and came out the other side as the drummer for Rancid, which has been his job for the past 15 years. While that's worthy of its own podcast, we spend a lot of time talking about his heavy childhood in Utah and using skateboarding as an escape. On the podcast, we talk about Ken Block, Tony Hawk, music, his Ghost Pickleball brand, and much more. From my observation, we are at the cusp of a re-emergence of new & exciting rock bands- unlike anything we've seen in quite a while. This also includes a re-emergence of some familiar favorites as well. Bubbling under that surface, I have heard one name pop up more commonly than not:Joey Bradford. My first encounter with Joey's prowess came in the form of one of my favorite bands (my old band got to open for during the end of our run,) a band called: Hell Or Highwater. These days, Joey is the guitar slinging, golf club swinging, rock record producing member of The Used. He's been working with some of my favorite artists such as Letter Kills and Dead American- with more on the way.We discuss all of this; as well as mutually share our desire to work with Jimmy Eat World (him- producing, me-podcasting.. )www.caughtonthemike.com www.buymeacoffee.com/caughtonthemike
So much is made of the sophomore album syndrome with bands, especially the belief that a second album can often be the making or breaking of a band in terms of longevity and success. Although personally I have never favoured that belief - good music is good music whether it's your first, second, third or fourth album - there are many bands who have dished up below-par second albums and never recovered. The answer to that is pretty simple.Attack each and every album with a wholehearted belief and trust in what has got you there in the first place. Or you could go one better and try to better yourself musically, which is exactly what emo rock outfit The Funeral Portrait have done with their second album Greetings From Suffocate City, which will be laid bare this Friday, September 13.With the full backing of their label Better Noise Music, The Funeral Portrait have poured their entire beings into their follow up to 2016's A Moment Of Silence, creating a sonic tapestry of songs that showcases the band in a powerful new light bristling with confidence and expansion.Plus, toss in the fact they have landed guest artists such as Bert McCracken of The Used, Spencer Charnas of Ice Nine Kills, Danny Worsnop of Asking Alexandria and Eva Under Fire and you suddenly have a melting pot of bristling, emotive rock music that looks set to propel The Funeral Portrait into the next wave of rock royalty that they have tirelessly been working towards.HEAVY caught up with vocalist Lee Jennings to find out more."It was a lot to do with…," he surmised. "Growing up, I was always the weird kid. I was always the loner or that kind of guy who was made fun of for being too tall or too weird or being into… I was always into anime, or musical theatre, just different from everyone else. Everyone else, especially around me, was into sports. I wanted to write a record that was kind of a love letter to the younger me, so every song has to do with some sort of experience that happened in prior years."In the full interview, Lee talks more about Greetings From Suffocation City and what to expect, his inspirations behind the music, motivating yourself to put out the best album you can, the story arc across the 14 tracks, how this album differs musically to A Moment Of Silence, what he learnt about himself and his music between albums, the guest artists and how they came to be on the record, making a statement with music, the band's blending of genres and how they come together, the theatrics within their music, touring plans and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

In this podcast, Zac Attacks all the new music releases on May 19th, 2023. Ten songs from all genres including: Summer Walker, Bad Bunny, Post Malone, Kesha, Maroon 5, and Bring Me the Horizon. Plus album reviews on The Used - Toxic Positivity and Sleep Token - Take Me Back To Eden.
Rock upstarts The Used have always approached life and music with a youthful exuberance that has translated to their massive fan base and seen their brand of music endure over nine albums since their inception in 2000.Following the release of Heartwork Deluxe last year, which featured collaborations with artists such as Travis Barker, Jason Aalon Butler and Caleb Shomo, The Used are now ready to release more new music, coming at you dripping with attitude in the shape of new single Fuck You.It is as much a statement of intent as it is a throwaway remark for The Used, but to find out the deeper meaning behind the track HEAVY tracked down frontman Bert McCracken for clarification.Needless to say we got none."It's basically a love letter to all of our fans from the heart," he said of the song, struggling to hold back the laughter. "There's a little bit of a fuck you inside of that, and I think it's good to release the demons, especially after the horrific time we had during the pandemic. It's cathartic to say it out loud."The film clip is another work of magic, featuring live footage, babies and the traditional bird, with McCracken explaining it is kind of a homage to the bands early work."Our very first video ever was for A Box Full Of Sharp Objects which had live video footage of us hanging out and playing live and we wanted to recreate that. I think it's a really awesome thing to see a band backstage having fun with each other and hanging out. It's a side you don't get to see."In the full interview, Bert talks about the warning that comes with the music video, the intended audience Fuck You is aimed at, new music, the deluxe version of Heartwork, why bands put out deluxe editions of albums, the collaborations on the album and which one he enjoyed most, playing the recent When We Were Young Festival, possible Australian tour dates and more.
