Coasting more on longer rides will actually make you go faster in the end. How ranchers turn flatbed railroad cars into small bridges. Riding upright when super hot might overall be faster than low and aero due to the cooling. Rock Bros arm coolers are interesting - solid on one side and mesh on the other. For sun block / cooling. Fueling trick - clear bottles so you can see how much you've used to help stay on track. Meshy stuff WAY better in hot conditions. Dramatic cooling effect compared to classic cycling kit. Garmin 970 added rucking, sapphire glass, flashlight, speaker and microphone, but no voice notes... Fenix is overkill for most people, and that adds weight and makes it a poor running watch. Front-facing collision warning radar would be cool device since you can hit a car with your head down. Story how I was friends with the inventor of Morf-tech bars and he died from a crash like that. Interesting nuance of singlespeeding - sometimes faster on long rides by capping effort on flats and downhills? "Unhurried" vs. "Slow Living". Difference is intention and middle pathing. Getting water from country gas station. Cool soundscape. Surrounded by Roadies. Drifting in gravel turns is FUN. Uhurried more like Taoism "Flow" than Slow Living is. Miniature compass on handlebars end up being better than I thought! Use to better work with wind and navigation, no batteries. How I'm using my Garmin 945 watch to send HR to my bike computer. Cooling down under a freeway bridge. 91 degrees in the shade. Using cold soda to cool down faster from the inside out. Fueling 300 calories per hour using table sugar and a little bit of Gatorade powder and sodium citrate. Zen story of being unhurried to become enlightened. Hitting singletrack and pipeline road. Signs you're trying to do too much. The "shoot first, point later" concept of videoing your rides with an Insta360 camera. The Pharmacy is back open! This week's episode covers the Atlanta United match and NSC's long awaited return to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. As always, Thanks for listening!
There are plenty of thankless jobs out there…think about the people who have to work outside in all kinds of weather…line workers for power companies…garbage collectors… construction workers. Same goes for prison officers, nurses, teachers, and first responders of all types…i could go on, but you get the idea…so much needs to go on behind the scenes for us to be able to live our lives. There are dirty jobs but someone's gotta do it…for the most part, they do their jobs so well that we don't even think about them…but if not for these people, society wouldn't function. Now let's look at the music industry…the performers get all the glory, but we'd know nothing of them if it wasn't for the massive support they get from people in the background. That includes support staff at record labels and management companies, publicists, assistants, and thousands of other positions that helps make the music happen. One of the most important positions is paradoxically both visible and invisible…if they do their jobs well, they're ghosts…but if they don't, things don't go so well…in fact, they may not go as well. I'm talking about roadies, members of the road crew, the people who enlist in the army that's necessary to put an act on tour…without their expertise, long hours, and willingness make sure everything always goes smooth, there would be no live experience. They say that if there ain't no audience, there ain't no show…but if there ain't no road crew, then their ain't nothing at all. This is a history of the men and women who make live shows happen…it's the story of roadies. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

With special guest: Stuart Coupe… in conversation with Bill Kable We have always heard about the sex and drugs of the rock’n’roll lifestyle but few of us get any access to this hidden part of the music industry. Until now Stuart Coupe has lived in the music world for over forty years and by getting the roadies, these unsung heroes, to open up we can find out both the good and the bad sides of this life on the road. Stuart tells us one of his motivations in doing the research and writing his latest book Roadies: The Secret History of Australian Rock’n’Roll was to preserve the stories from the early days because the roadies have had some casualties and he does not want the stories to disappear with the last of the original roadies. Not only does the lifestyle take a toll on the roadies’ physical health but the toll on family life is intense. The roadies will often be away from home for 10 to 11 months of the year because the show has to go on. Podcast (mp3)

This episode originally aired on Feb. 14, 2023 “I moved on to the next thing I was going to write,” says the noted dramatist and television writer Winnie Holzman, recalling the cancellation of her critically-acclaimed series “My So-Called Life,” after just one season. “That's what we do as writers. We move on to the next thing.” Indeed. In Winnie Holzman's case, one of those “next things” turned out to be the book for the hit Broadway musical “Wicked,” with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz—one of the longest running shows in Broadway history. The collaboration earned her a prestigious Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical, as well as a Tony nomination for Best Book of a Musical. Prior to her Emmy-nominated work on “My So-Called Life,” which she created for executive producers Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz, Winnie wrote several scripts for the Zwick-Herskovitz drama “Thirtysomething,” and she would go on to serve as executive producer of “Roadies,” created by Cameron Crowe, and as co-creator of the series “Huge,” with her daughter Savannah Dooley. Join us as Winnie reflects on her wickedly successful career writing for the stage and the small screen, the many ways writers measure their successes, and the give-and-take that has fueled her collaborations with some of the most creative minds in theater and television. IN BRETT'S OWN WORDS:I initially did the Ride in 1999 because, at the time, I thought I had only months to live. It was my sixth anniversary of being HIV. Medications were limited and toxic. My health was struggling greatly, so I wanted to challenge myself to fight for those living and aging with HIV/AIDS one last time, myself included. However, to my thankful surprise, I'm still here!Since 1993, when the Ride began as the "California AIDS Ride," participants have raised more than $300+ million and completed more than 42,000 journeys on bikes from San Francisco to Los Angeles. The stigma of HIV remains very prevalent, and many in the HIV community are still reluctant to talk about it. Those living and aging with HIV/AIDS struggle daily to maintain their health and get reasonably priced health services. New infections are still alarmingly present in communities all over the US. Those becoming HIV+ are constantly saying, "We didn't know, we didn't realize, we don't care, no one told us, we thought it was a manageable disease!.We realize that the week out on AIDS/LifeCycle is the hardest we will work all year, but it is also the most emotional and fulfilling for me and the other Riders and Roadies. (from 2021) My personal training story started in September after a ten-month recovery from a nasty bike crash. Thankfully, I'm now riding 100-200 miles weekly, but it can be grueling, a huge time-suck, and days filled with mental and physical challenges, but I do it with my Desert Roadrunners team of like-minded and selfless individuals. Team Desert Roadrunners represents our own 'desert love bubble.' I was raised on the idea that community and service are essential and can fulfill your wildest dreams and goals. The love that comes towards you as a Rider or Roadie, you get to give back tenfold to other people. It's incredibly emotionally filling. The AIDS/LifeCycle advances the shared interests of the beneficiaries in reducing new HIV infections and improving the quality of life for people living and aging with HIV/AIDS. It raises crucial awareness about the ongoing epidemic, in addition to funding critical services such as HIV testing and screenings for other sexually transmitted infections, medical care, prevention services, housing, and more.In addition to the 1.2 million people living with HIV and AIDS in the United States, 1 in 7 people do not know they live with the disease. https://giving.aidslifecycle.org/participant/43387Desert Sun: https://www.desertsun.com/story/news/health/2022/06/03/palm-springs-resident-ride-545-miles-raise-funds-hiv-aids/7462292001/Photo: Copyright Wilkinson/2024Opening and closing music courtesy the very talented Zakhar Valaha via Pixabay. To contact Wilkinson- email him at BecomingWilkinson@gmail.com
Oscar-Winning Writer/Director Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous, Fast Times at Ridgemont High) talks with Says Who Sports about a celebrated career that was launched when he became the youngest writer ever for Rolling Stone as a teenager and traveled with the biggest rock bands in the world, including the Allman Brothers Band and Led Zeppelin, wrote the best-selling novel Fast Times at Ridgemont High and later wrote the screenplay for the movie, wrote and directed such films as Say Anything, Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous, won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, won a Grammy Award, was nominated for a Tony Award, directed acclaimed music documentaries about Pearl Jam and David Crosby, created the Showtime series Roadies, and much more! Crowe's directorial debut as a teenager, the long-lost and newly released Heartbreakers Beach Party, about the legendary Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and the hijinks and high-energy surrounding the making of their third album, Long After Dark, was banned by MTV after one airing in the summer of 1983 due to what the network generally described as inappropriate reckless content. Crowe and producing partner Greg Mariotti, along with Petty's daughter, Adria, have now brought the film to theaters and streaming in all its early Petty-era glory. Crowe shares special stories and anecdotes about the making of the movie, including Petty's self-professed connection to Jeff Spicoli, Crowe's iconic lovable stoner character played by Sean Penn in Fast Times. Crowe also shares memories from his time on the road with the Allman Brothers Band in the early Seventies and recalls the magic of what it felt like to be standing onstage watching the band play four hour shows, and his gratitude for guitarist Dickey Betts for trusting him and opening the "band access" door to Crowe. Crowe, who is working on a film with/about legendary singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell, shares nuggets about his friendship with Mitchell, including the profound impact her music had on a young Crowe growing up in a household where rock music was essentially off-limits, and the wisdom he has gained from Mitchell via their conversations. Crowe discusses the making of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, including battles with the studio to release the film and the unexpected and mind-blowing crowd reaction to the movie in a theater on Opening Weekend. Crowe pays much respect to director Amy Heckerling, who championed Fast Times and led the way for directors including an up-and-coming John Hughes in the making of teen films in that era. Crowe also talks about Penn's immense impact on the film, including witnessing Penn's supreme confidence and skill as a young actor and his unique approach to playing the role of Spicoli. Crowe shares special memories of the making of Jerry Maguire, including humorous moments on the set with sports agent mentor Leigh Steinberg, his respect for and friendship with former NFL quarterback Drew Bledsoe, who inspired Crowe in his creation of the fictional character that played the quarterback and prospective top NFL draft pick in the movie, and the awe-inspiring skills of actor Tom Cruise, who played the title character and whom Crowe describes as committed in the strongest way to understanding and respecting the roles of all members of the movie-making team and to helping Crowe realize his vision for the film. Crowe also discusses much about Almost Famous, including the influence on the movie of those nights he spent as a teenager watching from the stage as the Allman Brothers Band played marathon shows.

We've gone full-send on the hops for a Friday! Whatcha Say IPA focuses on the hop aroma and flavors for Mosaic, Citra and Nectaron without a lot of the bitterness. A true San Diego Style IPA masterpiece like the song it's named after.
Up to this point it's been light crushable beers that don't feature a lot of hops. Today the Roadies crew pops the top on a must-try San Diego style Pale Ale called Pocket Pale.
In true Roadie fashion light crushable lagers are a must have when you're working behind the scenes. Continuing to flex on crushable easy drinking beers Roadies Corazon Espinado is much like Uncle John's Lager with it's full body and drinkability but you get that subtle hint of influence from South of the border.
When you take your name from a song like Blondie's Rapture, you better bring your S+ game. If you're looking for spirit of their light lagers in a fuller bodied ale, Rapture delivers all that delicious biscuity-goodness and is still insanely crushable.
Please put your hands together and welcome The Roadies! The crew from Roadies Brewing in Vista has dropped by with beer as they countdown the days till their Grand Opening on Friday! They kicked things off with a perfect beer for the oppressive heat we've had all weekend with their take on an American Light Lager called Uncle John's Lager (no to be confused with Uncle John's Band).
The Jeffs hit the road to visit Sean & Diane Hilz in their new brewery Roadies Brewing. Listen to their origin story including the story behind Uncle John's Lager. Listen to the end to find out all the amazing plans Diane and Sean have for the months ahead, including their official opening on September 13th!

Happy Tuesday, Roadies!!! Thank you so much for listening! We need you, we love you, thank you!
Winnie Holzman's so-called writing career began innocently enough, writing and performing sketch material with the comedy group “Serious Bizness.” Next came an MFA from NYU in musical theatre, as well as a musical: “Birds of Paradise,” which was produced Off-Broadway and directed by her teacher, Arthur Laurents. She soon shifted gears, (and coasts) joining the writing staff of the ground-breaking television series “thirtysomething” and then creating theseries, “My So-Called Life,” which starred Claire Danes and which, thanks to MTV (and now HULU) has been seen all over the world. She collaborated “once and again” with her mentors Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz on their critically acclaimed series “Once and Again;” and later collaborated with her daughter Savannah Dooley on their one hour drama series “Huge;” as well as with Cameron Crowe on the Showtime series “Roadies.” She is the book writer of the international hit musical Wicked, which has a score by the acclaimed composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz. Wicked celebrated 20 years on Broadway this past fall. She recently completed both screenplays for the film adaptation of Wicked. Her play Choice, an early version of which had its world premiere at the Huntington Theatre in Boston, in 2016, will be produced this spring at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, New Jersey. She is a proud member of the Writers Guild of America West, and the Dramatists Guild, and has been married to the wonderful character actor Paul Dooley for only 39 years. Paul Dooley is an actor, writer, and comedian, and has appeared in hundreds of movies, TV shows, and plays. His films include Breaking Away, Sixteen Candles, Runaway Bride, Popeye, Insom-nia, Waiting for Guffman, and the Cars franchise. His television appearances include roles in Curb Your Enthusiasm, My So-Called Life, Star Trek, Dream On (Emmy-nominated), and The Practice (Emmy-nominated).
