Back in the late '90s, when I was diving headfirst into the world of playing in bands, I was like a sponge—soaking up every bit of inspiration from the best of the best. One of the biggest influences on me when it came to stage presence and connecting with an audience was someone I now have the privilege of calling a friend: Steve Ewing of The Urge This is Steve's second time on the show—and I can't wait to share this latest episode with all of you. Even more pumped to see The Urge live again on July 12 in Omaha. You do not want to miss it!
Frnd Crcl, pronounced "Friend Circle," is a band based in Vineland, NJ, steadily making a name for themselves in the pop punk scene. Formed in 2018, they began to turn heads with the release of their sophomore album, Internet Noise, which dropped during the chaotic year of 2020. Often compared to pop punk heavyweights like Blink-182 and Sum 41, FRND CRCL is now aiming to carve out their own unique identity with their upcoming release, JRSY FRSH, set to drop on May 30. Joining me on the podcast today is Zac Johnson of FRND CRCL. We dive into the band's journey—past, present, and future—and explore our perspectives on creativity in today's ever-evolving music industry.
Nick Hexum is best known as the frontman of the band 311, which has now been together for over 30 years. In fact, their 1995 breakthrough release, commonly and affectionately referred to as "the Blue Album," turns 30 years old on July 11, 2025—just one day before their concert in their hometown of Omaha, NE, for 89.7 The River's 30th birthday bash. Throughout 311's career, they have released 14 studio albums, many of which reached the top 10 of the Billboard 200 charts. The band has maintained its longevity through constant touring and by building a loyal, worldwide fanbase. In the eyes of many—including myself—311 is summertime's most favorite band. In 2025, Nick is taking his creativity to another level by releasing what he describes as 25 solo songs across multiple EPs. The first two, "Waxing Nostalgic" and "Full Memories," dropped in February and April of this year. These solo releases showcase a noticeable shift toward vulnerability and transparency. The themes revolve around coming to terms with one's relationship with nostalgia while also looking ahead to the future. A strong influence in this material is Nick's role as a father, husband, and all-around family man, resulting in a refreshing honesty conveyed through well-crafted Americana music. As a long time 311 fan, I personally, have been trying to manifest this conversation for five years and am glad to have had the opportunity to express my gratitude to Nick in this episode.

Sunburnt is a high energy trio that does their best to inject a little sunshine into everyday life's ups and downs. Embracing the spirit of Southern California's pop, alternative, hardcore, and pop punk traditions, SUNBURNT fuses these influences into a tidy and modern package. Justin, Will, and Alex have all played in various bands for over 15 years and decided after the pandemic that they still had things to say. The band shuns the shiny themes of modern pop music for a real and personal approach to adult life. SUNBURNT is bringing the heat with no patience for the fake. They take concept in name as a metaphor for working a long day in the sun, comparatively; to spending days on the road, nights in cramped venues, and a lifetime creating music. To them, SUNBURNT is a badge of honor and a culmination of an adolescence hard at work to find their own sound.
Bron Theron started his film career by making documentaries on graffiti art. He toured with several hip hop groups and created a hip hopumentary film called "Primal Rap" . Currently, he is in production on his next film- "Fear Anonymous." He lives in Long Beach California and works as a professional muralist.
Josh, aka “isitjosh”, is an independent artist blending pop-punk, alternative rock, and pop, drawing inspiration from the music that surrounded him growing up. Originally born in New Hampshire, raised in Omaha, and now based in Philadelphia, he started out playing drums long before he was singing in bands like Take Me To Vegas and Hurricane Like Me. Now, “isitjosh” is a self-made solo artist who simply refuses to give up. Josh has built his new audience from the ground floor, with over 1 million streams and landing on 10,000+ user playlists through grassroots support and social media alone. His sound is nostalgic but modern and genre bending - pulling from the 2000s emo umbrella, alt rock staples like Third Eye Blind and Matchbox Twenty, and pop influences like The Weeknd and Justin Bieber. At its heart, Josh's music is about real experiences and honest storytelling. Without a label or major backing, he continues to connect with listeners through an authentic songwriting approach and a dedicated fanbase who supports him every step of the way.
With a string of releases that include 4 top 40 charting songs from the new singles “Vampire” and “FERRARI RED” to the smash EP daydream drama, VIOLET NIGHT has garnered a dedicated fan base and praise for their music. The band merges alternative rock, indie pop, and ambient layers, creating a sound that's both ethereal and unfiltered. Their music draws inspiration from personal experiences and the human condition, often exploring themes of self-discovery, introspection, existentialism, and the complexities of relationships. They combine hauntingly emotive vocals and lush instrumentation to create an immersive sonic landscape that invites audiences to delve into their introspective narratives. In this episode, I have the pleasure of chatting with Connor Pohl of Violet Night and learning the mechanics of what makes this band run!!

Bubbling under that surface, I have heard one name pop up more commonly than not:Joey Bradford. My first encounter with Joey's prowess came in the form of one of my favorite bands (my old band got to open for during the end of our run,) a band called: Hell Or Highwater. These days, Joey is the guitar slinging, golf club swinging, rock record producing member of The Used. Formed in 1995, Save Ferris remains one of the seminal and most beloved bands from the third wave of ska. The group's Orange County home was fertile ground for a thriving music scene, with punk, rock, and ska emerging from the region. Save Ferris blended the best elements of these sounds to help bring the region's sound to the world. The group's humble beginnings saw them play house parties and local venues, powered by Monique Powell's high-octane vocals. Save Ferris' live show instantly became a hit. Known for their cover of "Come On Eileen," their hit single "The World Is New," and a feature in the motion picture "10 Things I Hate About You"- Save Ferris was atop of the world. After a hiatus that ran from 2003 to 2013, and some "legal hoopla": Powell and her bandmates went into the studio to record a new EP in 2016. The end result was an upbeat collection called: "Checkered Past."Following the release, Save Ferris played the entire 2017 Warped Tour on the main stage, headlined shows, and played festivals across the world. The future is as bright as it has been for Save Ferris in a long time. Powell scrapped a record she wrote prior to the pandemic and is currently at work on the first new Save Ferris album in nearly two decades. A lot of amazing shows in 2024: Powell has proven why she is the centerpiece of the action. Her dazzling on- stage presence continues to wow audiences and the band's energy is infectious. Save Ferris are out to prove that they're no nostalgia act, with their best days still ahead of them.
