This week on The Watchers' Pilot Season, Jodie and Andrea review The Leftovers, HBO's 2014 drama based on Tom Perotta's novel of the same name. We get into how we might respond to losing two percent of the world's population in an instant, how this show has more in common with our previous shows than we'd expected, whether all dogs are truly good dogs, and if a certain deer has a grudge against Justin Theroux. Plus, we manage to weave in more Jersey talk than you might expect in an episode focused on "upstate" (to us) New York. But then again, if you've been tuning in for a while now, that's probably not so surprising after all.Pilot season is technically over here at The Watchers. Next week, we're recapping seasons one and two of The Bear, Christopher Storer's love letter to Chicago and family dysfunction. We'll be covering season three after that, so if you've never watched The Bear, now's the time."The Leftovers, Life, Death, Einstein and Time Travel" By Maureen RyanPlus IconFollow:The Watchers on Instagram (@WatchersPodNJ)Andrea on Instagram (@AQAndreaQ)Jodie on Instagram (@jodie_mim)Our sister show, New Jersey Is the World, on Instagram (@newjerseyistheworld)Thanks to Kitzy (@heykitzy) for the use of our theme song, "No Book Club."

Pourquoi ?

“The Amateurs” is a speculative novel of rapture and romance in the vein of Margaret Atwood’s The Year of the Flood and Tom Perotta’s The Leftovers. In the near future, the world’s largest tech company unveils the “Port”, a personal time travel device. It becomes a phenomenon. But soon it is clear that those who pass through its portal won’t be coming back–either unwilling to return or, more ominously, unable to do so. After a few short years, the population plummets. A small group of the one percent still remain in the present, having been left trying to rebuild a very lonely and dwindling world. Liz Harmer is a Canadian writer living in Southern California with her many pets, three children, and philosopher husband. Her stories, essays, and poems have appeared or are forthcoming in the Walrus, Image Journal, the Globe and Mail, The Malahat Review, Lit Hub, and elsewhere. In 2014 she won gold in Personal Journalism at the National Magazine awards, after being awarded the Constance Rooke Award for Creative Nonfiction. In 2018 she was a finalist for the Journey Prize as well as appearing in Best Canadian Stories. Her debut novel, The Amateurs, released in 2018 with Knopf Canada, was a finalist for the Amazon Canada First Novel Award. Startup (Little Brown and Company) Doree Shafrir’s hilarious, smart debut Startup is set in the heart of New York City’s tech industry, where 36 is considered past your prime and a pole-dancing workshop is an acceptable Thursday evening activity with your co-workers. A veteran online journalist, Doree has written a hilarious and sharply observed novel about the difficulties of real-life connection in our hyper-connected world. Startup assembles a cast of indelible characters: Mack, the it-boy visionary of the moment trying to take his app to the next level; Isabel, a social media hero working for him a bit too closely; Katya, an ambitious Russian emigre journalist desperate for a scoop; and Sabrina, an exhausted mother of two whose inattentive husband happens to be Katya's boss. When a scandal erupts in the lower Manhattan loft building where all four work, they quickly discover just how small a world the Big Apple's tech community can be. A senior culture writer at BuzzFeed, Doree was inspired to write this novel by the follies and foibles of the startup world, and also in part by some of the scandals that plagued the tech industry in the last few years. Camille Perri, author of The Assistants, notes Startup “is chock-full of strong women transcending the workplace drama, sexual politics, and all-around dumb stuff the men in their life are doing. It’s a novel that just might spark the official feministing of startup culture.” This debut, already praised by Rumaan Alam, Joanna Rakoff, and Nick Bilton, is a sharp, hugely entertaining story of youth, ambition, love, money and technology's inability to hack human nature. Praise for Startup  “Is there a satirist alive more brilliant—and more insightful—than Doree Shafrir? That I tore through Startup in a single day—ignoring the cries of my children and the dinging of my phone, laughing with recognition at her characters’ foibles—is perhaps not nearly as significant as the fact that this ridiculously compelling novel has haunted me, every minute, in the weeks that followed. If you have ever lived in New York or worked in an office, you will love this novel. If you love the novels of Tom Perotta, you will love this novel. But also: If you are a sentient human, you will love this novel.”--Joanna Rakoff, author of My Salinger Year "Don't buy this book. Don't open. Don't start reading it. Because if you do, I can assure you, you won't be able to put it down. I was hooked from the first page and found myself lost in a beautifully-written fiction that so succinctly echoes today's bizarre reality."— Nick Bilton, Special Correspondent, Vanity Fair and author of Hatching Twitter: A True Story of Money, Power, Friendship, and Betrayal “This funny, empowering debut is chock-full of strong women transcending the workplace drama, sexual politics, and all-around dumb stuff the men in their life are doing. It’s a novel that just might spark the official feministing of startup culture. If I were a tech bro, I’d be shaking in my hoodie.”–Camille Perri, author of The Assistants Doree Shafrir has also been on staff at Rolling Stone, the New York Observer, Gawker, and Philadelphia Weekly, and has contributed to publications including the New York Times, the New Yorker, Slate, The Awl, New York Magazine, Marie Claire, and Wired. She grew up outside of Boston, lived in New York for nine years, and now resides in Los Angeles with her husband Matt Mira, a comedy writer and podcaster. Jade Chang has covered arts and culture as a journalist and editor. She is the recipient of a Sundance Fellowship for Arts Journalism, the AIGA/Winterhouse Award for Design Criticism, and the James D. The Leftovers may have ended, but Christopher Cross and Dylan Schwan are hellbent on making sure it is remembered forever. Instead of reviewing a movie this week, they talk all about the entire series of The Leftovers, created by Damon Lindelof and Tom Perotta, based off Perotta's novel of the same name. From our favorite episodes and characters, the moments that defined the show, and what the show meant to us, The Leftovers was a triumphant success and we can't wait to dissect the entire show for you. We really didn't see any movies that came out recently, so instead Chris celebrates E3 week with a review of Doom, and Dylan watched the Criterion release of the week, They Live by Night. We also talk about the Black Panther trailer and how Netflix is still not happy with Cannes. There's also the blu-ray releases of the week, where we choose The Lego Batman Movie as our pick of the week, but John Wick Chapter 2 is worth your money too - both movies we recorded a podcast on. Next week, we'll be reviewing Rough Night. Film Fallout is a weekly podcast about film and television. Every week, Christopher Cross and Dylan Schwan discuss news happening in the industry, blu-ray releases coming out this week, what they’ve been watching, and then a review of one movie. You can listen to it on SoundCloud, iTunes, or on BagoGames. Also follow us on Instagram for some behind-the-scenes magic. We are both on Twitter, if you’d like to follow us there. Among many tangents, side conversations and musings (authors writing about unhappy marriages while all claiming to have happy marriages, the disappointing odds of Goodreads giveaways, authors whose debut novels are published by a different company than their first, and Gayle accosting Tom Perotta at BookExpo America), Gayle and Nicole discuss the books they can't wait to get their hands on is the next few weeks and report back on a some recently mentioned books they've read. Basically, they spend half an hour adding to each other's, and hopefully your, TBR lists. http://amzn.to/2rx1eJ0 (The Light We Lost) by Jill Santopolo http://amzn.to/2re2T6D (Woman No. 17) by Edan Lepucki http://amzn.to/2qS8KgR (California) by Edan Lepucki http://amzn.to/2rdmyU3 (Perennials) by Mandy Berman http://amzn.to/2rwV1N8 (The Shadow Man) by Alan Drew

Here are some links to content we talk about during the podcast: Conversation with Executive Producer and director of the first episode, Mimi Leder (The Daily Beast) Damon Lindelof and Tom Perotta talk about the show (WatchingTheLeftovers.com) Interview with Damon (Variety) These are pictures taken in Lockhart, TX, otherwise known to YOU as Jarden! Taking a look at the Jarden PD storefront. Wide angle of the Jarden PD, through the front window. You can see where Kevin's office is back there. Faith Johnson is in the art department for the show. She must be very popular with her coworkers. Faith Johnson works in the show's art department. I bet she is a total gun nut IRL. There's Faith now! Apparently she's missing and possibly being investigated as a secondary departure? Shaina Hedlund also works in the show's art department. Most of her other credits are around Austin as well. Christina Yoo also works in the show's art department. I'm sensing a theme. Informational posters on the little door to the PD bullpen. San Marcos is a city very near to Lockhart were The Leftovers is filmed.
