Are billionaires so dead inside that they need to risk their lives just to feel alive again? Not all of them. Probably. This week we're diving and climbing and rocketing inside the world of extreme luxury and adventure travel where the insanely wealthy pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to travel to the depths of the ocean, outer space, Antarctica and the highest, most remote peaks on Earth. Plus: we've got an update on the show.Email us at toomuchmoneypodcast@gmail.com. Too Much Money is hosted and produced by Jo Piazza and Doree Shafrir. Music is by Lisa Brenner. Karlie Kloss is just the latest billionaire (by marriage) who thought it might be fun to start buying magazines. But billionaires' track record with the media is ... not great. In this ep we discuss the various billionaires (Jeff Bezos, Patrick Soon-Shiong, Mort Zuckerman, Sam Zell, etc.) who have bought media properties, what happened next, and who suffered (hint: not them!).Email us! toomuchmoneypodcast@gmail.com.Too Much Money is hosted and produced by Jo Piazza and Doree Shafrir. Are we being invaded by aliens? Jo thought so when she saw a massive string of bright lights jet across the night sky. But alas, it wasn't aliens — it was Elon Musk. The Musker has been releasing satellites by the dozen and if you don't know what you are looking at they are downright terrifying. Here to explain this latest venture from the infamous billionaire is guest host Nick Aster, aka Jo's husband, who knows much more about space things than we do. Robert Bigelow made his fortune in budget hotels (with some really intense bad reviews). But that business was all a means to an end for Bigelow. All he ever wanted (since he was a little kid staring up at the stars) was to go to outer space. And he tried to make that dream a reality by offering to make NASA some budget motels on the moon. When that didn't work out her switched his focus to funding UFO research and eventually an even stranger and more unbelievable project.Email us at toomuchmoneypodcast@gmail.com. There was so much billionaire news over the last few weeks that we needed to do a news-y episode to go over it all. First we have yet another billionaire buying up land in Hawaii for somewhat mysterious reasons, and then we cover a three-day, $120 million PRE-wedding party in India. Finally, we have a story about a billionaire who is actually doing something to help the world.Email us at toomuchmoneypodcast@gmail.com! Today's episode tells the tale of the worst party ever thrown. This is what happens when a Gilded Age millionaire has too much money to spend to celebrate the grand opening of his fancy new stables. Dinner guests were made to endure a multi-course dinner while strapped in the saddle atop horses lifted into a fourth floor Manhattan ballroom. But we promise, it gets even weirder. In 2010, a man named Forrest Fenn published a memoir that contained a 24-verse poem that, he said, contained nine clues about the whereabouts of what he said was a buried treasure worth $2 million. For more than a decade, thousands of people tried to find his treasure with no luck. When treasure hunters started dying, people began wondering why he didn't call the whole thing off. And then someone found it.Email us at toomuchmoneypodcast@gmail.com! Too Much Money is hosted and produced by Jo Piazza and Doree Shafrir. Music is by Lisa Brenner. Hosted on Acast. The Eighties were a wacky time in aviation history. Deregulation ushered in a variety of kooky airlines that catered to all kinds of crowds, from a smokers' airline to fancy-pants first-class-only carriers. Even Donald Trump had his own airline, complete with gold-plated bathrooms. But Trump wasn't the only one decking out planes to look like one of Hugh Hefner's mansions. Casino and movie studio magnate Kirk Kerkorian of MGM had the wild idea to create an airline meant to satisfy celebs' every whim on flights from New York to Los Angeles. Frequented by the likes of Madonna and Guns N' Roses, for a brief stint MGM Air was THE WAY celebs flew the friendly skies. But alas, every rose has its thorn and every celebration must come to an end. We're going deep into the demise of the airline whose motto was "everything else should be called second class."Email us at toomuchmoneypodcast@gmail.com! In 2012, Oracle founder and billionaire Larry Ellison bought 98 percent of the Hawaiian island of Lanai for $300 million. The 3,000 or so people who live there were initially hopeful that life there would improve, but now, 12 years later, they're worried about the changes he's made and how life on the island they call home may never be the same.Email us at toomuchmoneypodcast@gmail.com! The celebrated aviator Amelia Earhart is better known for how she disappeared than the incredible feats she accomplished alive. Her disappearance has long captivated explorers, governments and naturally billionaires. And as we know, billionaires love to find things other people can't afford to find. Millions have been spent searching for any clue of what happened to Earhart and just last month a new clue emerged after a millionaire from South Carolina spent more than $11 million to scour thousands of miles of ocean looking for the unfindable. Getting into college is much less stressful when your parents are paying a college consultant to pretend that you're on the crew team when you've never rowed in your life. Why are billionaires obsessed with bringing animals back from extinction? Have none of them ever seen Jurassic Park? Do they not know the very dire consequences here?Various billionaires (and multimillionaire celebrities like the Hemsworth brothers and Paris Hilton) have invested in trying to bring back the Woolly Mammoth, the Tasmanian Tiger and the Dodo. Sometimes they cloak these quests in an attempt to save the environment by restoring the pre-Ice Age ecosystem. But do they truly want to save the world or do they just want to ride a Woolly Mammoth? It is not cheap to build an exact replica of the Titanic. Estimates are a cool $500 million. But that did not deter eccentric billionaire Clive Palmer, a man so obsessed with the Titanic that he is desperate to build an exact replica of the ship that will sail across the ocean carrying passengers who may or may not be wearing period costumes. But is any project associated with the ill-fated ship doomed? Was this all a publicity stunt to bolster Palmer's political fortunes in Australia? And why are rich guys so obsessed with proximity to the Titanic? The Titanic 2 was supposed to be one of the largest passenger ships ever built as well as being an exact replica of the original ship. Not everyone has loved the idea of the Titanic being rebuilt. It has been called disrespectful and a mockery of the tragedy. But will it ever actually be finished? Jo has made a new podcast and here is a sneak peak of the first episode. From Jo Piazza and Doree Shafrir, the host of the hit podcast Forever 35 comes TOO MUCH MONEY. Too Much Money is a podcast that attempts to answer this question by telling stories about people who have more money than they know what to do with, and use it in ways that are sometimes foolish, often petty, and often ridiculous. Each week, Jo Piazza and Doree Shafrir go deep into the story of one of these extremely rich people and how they've spent their money: like $500 million yachts, $250,000 dinosaur fossils, and years-long feuds with their neighbors over ocean views. After all, maybe you CAN be too rich. You can subscribe to TOO MUCH MONEY here.

It's a funky poodle this week!Directed by Terry Zwigoff based on Dan Clowes' beloved, cult graphic novel and co–written by Zwigoff and Clowes, GHOST WORLD is a window into the friendship between two teen girls Enid (Thora Birch) and Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson) – true outsiders – over the summer following their high school graduation as their allegiance first and foremost to each other starts to wain. These are the caustic, counterculture obsessed girls you either identify with, or you fear. They're working out what to do next – Rebecca's got a clearer path than Enid, who's got to get through an excruciating remedial art class (taught by Illeana Douglas) in order to get her high school diploma. One day Enid and Rebecca prank a lonely guy behind a personal ad. Soon, hermetic record collector Seymour (Steve Buscemi), enters their cool, misanthropic world and unsettles their folie à deux friendship for good.See AlsosThe Women of Ghost World on Working with Terry ZwigoffThe Dan Clowes Reader edited by Ken ParilleThe work of Aline Kominsky-CrumbTavi Gevinson's interview with Dan ClowesThe work of Julie Doucet (Drawn & Quarterly)Ione Skye's short David Goldberg based on "Ice Haven' from 2011Seance in Wowsville, Criterion essay by Howard HamptonGhost World at 20Tillie Waldren, author of On a Sunbeam, I Love This PartBrodie's post about Scarlett's ironing boardsWatch AlsoCrumbFunny PagesAmerican SplendourDiary of a Teenage GirlDaria season 3, episode 5: “The Lost Girls” (here's the episode of Doree Shafrir's podcast Rerun where Aminatou Sow discusses it)Find us on Instagram @seealsopodcast Hosted on Acast. Will you accept this rose? Rachel would rather be reading this book on the beach this week. The Road to Roses: Heartbreak, Hope, and Finding Strength When Life Doesn't Go as Planned by Autumn Krauss and Desiree Hartsock Siegfried In true Thursday Three fashion, though, Rachel doesn't want to leave you without a companion pick: Thanks for Waiting: The Joy (& Weirdness) of Being a Late Bloomer by Doree Shafrir
Joanna spoke with the brilliant Doree Shafrir, who helped originate and popularize the phrase "Generation Catalano," referring to those of us who fall in that hazy middle-space between Gen X and Millenial. We've got generational conversation aplenty, plus Doree's thoughts on the episode "Pressure" and some of the larger arcs of the series! **This interview will contain spoilers!** You can read Doree's 2011 article on Slate here: https://slate.com/human-interest/2011/10/generation-catalano-the-generation-stuck-between-gen-x-and-the-millennials.html Follow The Boiler Room @boilerroomcast Follow Joanna Robinson @jowrotethis Follow Kristin Russo @kristinnoelineFollow Doree Shafrir @doree Theme Song by Chris Farren Logo by Carra Sykes Edited by Kristin Russo
This episode of The Archive Project features authors and digital commentators Doree Shafrir and Ellen Ullman in conversation at 2017's Portland Book Festival. This discussion, aptly titled “Disruption: Feminist Digital Culture” and moderated by the New York Times' Jazmine Hughes, takes a hard look at what it means to be a woman in tech, both past and present.
This week Nora wants you to listen to an amazing podcast called Forever35. Kate Spencer and Doree Shafrir talk about self-care and how to get some in their (and your) lives. On this episode, they also talk to an up-and-comer named Nora McInerny. Nora talks about dealing with tragedy, how to actually help people who are grieving, and the many joys of drugstore makeup. You can find Forever35 at forever35podcast.com.

Buzzfeed's Doree Shafrir joins the panel this week for the latest filmed take on E.M. Forster's Howards End, and while we liked some things -- the casting; the memories of Witches Of East End occasioned by Julia Ormond -- not everything about the new iteration worked for us. We went Around The Dial with New Girl, Billions, Paterno, and Killing Eve before sinking our teeth into Big Little Lies S01.E05, "Once Bitten." Renewed shows won, cretins lost, and Tara put a song in our hearts with the next chapter of Tube Tunes for Game Time. Hail a carriage with wifi; it's an all-new Extra Hot Great. GUESTS

REALITY BYTES is a show about sex, love, relationships & dating in the digital age, hosted by Courtney Kocak & produced in partnership with JASH. The 3rd episode of season 2 features an eggcellent interview with married couple Matt Mira, writer on The Goldberg's & co-host of The Nerdist Podcast, & Doree Shafrir, journalist & author of Startup: A Novel, about their new podcast Matt & Doree's Eggcellent Adventure, which chronicles their quest to have a baby despite having "old eggs & dumb sperm" (their words; medical diagnosis: male factor infertility), meeting on Tinder, going public about fertility struggles in front of Sir Patrick Stewart (like you do) & how they keep the romance alive.
