Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that fell in love with the shape of a woman long before Gaga made it cool. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Lez Hang Out's very own production assistant and professional mermaid, Kristin Murison (@therealksparkle), and talk about why the 2026 blockbuster hit, The Devil Wears Prada 2, should've been gay. If you missed our Should've Been Gay episode on the original The Devil Wears Prada film we highly recommend listening to it first for the perfect podcast double feature. You could tell us that the entirety of this nearly 2-hour long sequel takes place in Emily Charlton's head as she recovers in the hospital after being hit by a taxi in the first movie and we would believe you. It's simply too gay of a script for there to be any other explanation aside from ‘lesbian fever dream'. Whether you ship Mirandy, Sachston, or a secret third thing (we suggest Lucy Liu and literally any other woman on screen), you will come out of DWP2 extremely well-fed. Although it has been 2 decades since Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) graced our screens, her red heels remain firmly on the necks of lesbians everywhere. Not even the decline of print journalism, the rise of fast fashion, and a full-on scandal can dethrone the queen of Runway. By reputation alone, she gets Lady Gaga to perform what is undoubtedly her gayest song since Born This Way. Yet, even Miranda and Lady Gaga's chemistry isn't the gayest thing about DWP2. That title is shared by the Emilys– Andy “I froze my eggs and have never hidden a feeling in my entire life” Sachs (Anne Hathaway) and Emily “I'm divorced and visibly repulsed by any man I have to get physically close to” Charlton (Emily Blunt), who spend the entire film openly ogling one another and bickering like an old married couple while wearing increasingly more masc outfits. They're pretty much canonically dating by the end, bonding over a plate of shared carbs as Emily confesses to having called Andy all those years ago (all but admitting that she has been holding on to the disappointment of Andy not calling her back for literally 20 years). If that's not a lesbian fever dream, we don't know what is. We know one thing for sure, The Devil Wears Prada 2 Should've Been Gay. Kill Bill Vol. 1 Review is finally here, and for the fourth birthday episode of Born to Watch, the boys celebrate in style with one of the most stylish revenge films ever made. Quentin Tarantino's blood-soaked martial arts epic gets the full Born to Watch treatment as Whitey, Dan, and Will "The Worky" dive headfirst into samurai swords, anime flashbacks, outrageous violence, feet discourse, and the pure chaos of Tarantino at his most indulgent. From the very beginning, the episode feels like a celebration. It's four years of Born to Watch, Will's "Grecoversary," and a return to one of Quentin Tarantino's most rewatchable movies. The crew break down why Kill Bill: Vol. 1 still hits over twenty years later, and whether it stands as Tarantino's ultimate "put it on anytime" movie. Whitey argues that this was his go-to Tarantino film for over a decade because of how effortlessly entertaining it is, while Dan arrives ready to throw counterpunches at the cult classic. The boys unpack the movie's simple but effective revenge story as Uma Thurman's Bride awakens from a coma and begins slicing her way through the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. Along the way, the episode explores Tarantino's obsession with genre worship, kung fu cinema, spaghetti westerns, exploitation films and anime influences. Is Kill Bill all style and no substance? Or is the style itself the substance? Dan argues the film feels more like a "comic book brought to life," while Whitey believes this marks the beginning of Tarantino's fantasy era that would continue through Inglourious Basterds and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. There's also plenty of classic Born to Watch chaos scattered throughout the episode. The guys go on hilarious tangents about actor-musicians, Russell Crowe's band, Steven Seagal blues music, David Carradine's infamous death, and whether Bill has slept with every member of the Deadly Viper squad. It's the kind of completely unhinged movie conversation only this podcast can deliver. The episode also dives deep into the standout performances. Uma Thurman's iconic turn as The Bride gets huge praise, while Lucy Liu's O-Ren Ishii is highlighted as one of the movie's best characters. The crew discuss Tarantino's talent for taking actors and reinventing them on screen, with Michael Madsen, Vivica A. Fox, Sonny Chiba and Daryl Hannah all getting their flowers. There's also a passionate discussion about Battle Royale, Oldboy, and the wave of Asian cinema influences that shaped Kill Bill into the movie it became. Naturally, the conversation turns toward the movie's most unforgettable moments. The House of Blue Leaves showdown gets dissected as one of the greatest action sequences ever filmed, while the anime origin story sequence sparks debate about whether it still works today or feels like pure Tarantino excess. The boys also tackle some of the film's more uncomfortable scenes, including Buck the hospital orderly, the Achilles tendon slicing scene, and Quentin Tarantino's famously obvious foot fetish. As always, there are laughs, arguments, wildly inappropriate observations, and genuine film appreciation mixed throughout the episode. This isn't a polished film school analysis. It's three mates sitting around celebrating movies the way movie fans actually talk about them.So if you love Quentin Tarantino, martial arts mayhem, over-the-top revenge stories, or just want to hear three Aussie blokes spiral into conversations about samurai swords, pubes, Steven Seagal and Shane Warne in the middle of a movie review, this episode is absolutely for you.JOIN THE CONVERSATIONIs Kill Bill: Vol. 1 Tarantino's most rewatchable movie?Which member of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad was your favourite?Do you prefer Volume 1 or Volume 2?Is the House of Blue Leaves sequence the greatest action scene ever filmed? And seriously… are Uma Thurman's feet even that good?#KillBill #KillBillVol1 #QuentinTarantino #BornToWatch #MoviePodcast #UmaThurman #LucyLiu #MartialArtsMovies #CultMovies #FilmPodcast

Us acompanyen l'Ignasi Arbat i en Jacint Casademont. Development on the film began in July 2024, with all four leading actors – Streep, Hathaway, Blunt, and Tucci – signing on to reprise their roles, and Frankel and McKenna returning to direct and write, respectively. Additional castings for new characters were revealed between then and November 2025. Jason and Rachel review The Devil Wears Prada 2, the 2026 sequel directed by David Frankel and starring Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, Lucy Liu, and BJ Novak. They saw it opening day — and came out on opposite sides of the aisle. This episode covers everything: the sequel's box-office performance, the unnecessary love subplot, Miranda's evolving (and arguably defanged) character, Nigel's long-overdue moment, and the question everyone's asking — does The Devil Wears Prada 2 earn its existence, or is it just nostalgia bait? Full spoilers for both films. You've been warned. New episodes weekly. Find us on YouTube, Instagram, and Patreon. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. “Living for the STREEP” Series: We are here to celebrate the career of Mary Louise Streep….now known to most as Meryl Streep who has become widely known by critics, film-lovers, and audiences as likely our GREATEST LIVING ACTRESS. Ever since her earlier breakout roles in the late 1970's in films such as The Deer Hunter, and Kramer Vs. Kramer, she has carved out a filmography filled with brilliant performances in memorable films spanning a variety of genres including biopics, thrillers, family dramas, AND comedies. During this time, she has also earned a STAGGERING TWENTY-ONE Oscar nominations including THREE wins. Over the next several months, I will be revisiting one notable Streep film each month – each highlighting a different type of performance – culminating with the May 1 release of the long-awaited sequel featuring one of her more ICONIC roles as Miranda Priestly, The Devil Wears Prada 2.The Wait is Finally Over. It has been almost twenty years since the original The Devil Wears Prada hit theaters, featuring one of Streep's most celebrated performances which she also received an Oscar nomination for. She's back as Miranda Priestly, once again leading the fashion magazine "Runway" though times have changed the magazine (like all print media) is now struggling....making matters worse, a new scandale has erupted online further putting Miranda's future (and the magazine's future) more at risk. Fortunately whom else should return to the magazine but Andy Sacks (Anne Hathaway) to maybe save the day? Infact several of the key players from that first film are ALSO back including Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, and Tracie Thoms....along with some new additions to the cast including Kenneth Branaugh, Justin Theroux, BJ Novak, and Luciy Liu! Let's see if this highly anticipated legacy sequel lives up to the hype..... The Devil Wears Prada 2 review: Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway return but the sequel undoes its own characters. Full spoiler breakdown. The Devil Wears Prada 2 reunites the original cast (Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci) twenty years after the 2006 film. Shen), and whether the sequel's commentary on the state of modern media actually lands. We enter the home stretch of the pre-Gunn DCU with Shazam: Fury of the Gods, a confused and inert mess of glop, nonsense and awful dialogue anchored by the unbearable anti-charisma of future Jesuslop washup Zachary Levi. Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu are wasted. Rachel Zegler needs a new agent; Diedrich Bader gets killed and nobody seems to notice; and the barely-explored villain scheme is stolen, inexplicably, from The Simpsons Movie. Needless to say, none of the teasers for future 'Shazam' installments will be paying off. Ever.

On this episode of Movie Torture, Brad, Jacob and MTD attempt to review Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, but instead spend most of the episode debating who's hotter (Lucy Liu vs. Cameron Diaz), planning MTD's funeral, and figuring out who inherits the Hopecast Network when Brad inevitably dies mid-podcast.Before the movie even gets going, Jacob celebrates his 85th episode milestone while Brad reminds him that his job security is entirely based on pretending Jacob is the funniest person on the show. Meanwhile, MTD continues his role as the mysterious, silent, possibly imaginary overlord of the podcast, but with worse communication skills and a tendency to ignore texts.Eventually, they remember there's a movie.Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle is described as a film where Hollywood gathered every famous person from the early 2000s, paid them millions of dollars, and then forgot to write a coherent plot. Instead, the movie focuses on three “agents” whose primary mission appears to be fighting crime while wearing increasingly impractical outfits and defying every known law of physics.Highlights include:A Mongolian bar fight that looks like it was filmed in 1845 but somehow includes a mechanical bullA helicopter that gets started mid-air while free-falling (a moment Brad compares to Kobe Bryant)Drew Barrymore sliding across tables without moving her feet like she's in The Matrix: Low Budget EditionLucy Liu being criminally underpaid while also being the only competent person in the movieCameron Diaz earning $20 million to act confused for two hoursThe guys also uncover the true plot of the movie, which involves:Two magic rings (basically Lord of the Rings for people who failed geometry), a witness protection list nobody understands, and Demi Moore showing up to remind everyone she's still the coolest person on screen. But the real story of this episode isn't the movie—it's the complete unraveling of the podcast itself.Somehow, the conversation spirals into:Whether MTD died by driving into a Country Kitchen and ordering waffles afterwardA full succession plan where Jacob inherits the network and immediately cancels everything to avoid paying podcast hosting feesBrad forcing his son into podcast slavery via his willA hypothetical skydiving scenario where Brad tries to take Jacob and MTD down with him out of spiteThe possibility of replacing Brad with a hologram or re-releasing old episodes like he's a podcast TupacFollow Movie Torture here:https://www.instagram.com/movietorturepod/Buy Merch here:https://www.bonfire.com/store/the-hopecast-network-swag/This show is brought to you by The Hopecast Networkhttps://www.instagram.com/hopecastnetwork/
In this episode we are joined by Baru from our friend at 残言片语 to discuss two films about disability and caregiving: Rosemead, starring Lucy Liu, and Take Me Home, a critically acclaimed new Sundance film. When telling stories about disabled people, it is hard to avoid telling the stories of caregivers as well. It is also easy to fall into a heavy, tragic narrative spiral. After all, society offers so few resources to disabled people, and from within that scarcity, the kinds of stories that emerge often look like the devastating dead end portrayed in Rosemead. Take Me Home, by contrast, uses an improvisational approach that blurs fiction and reality, allowing disabled actors to reveal a wholly different creative mode within the film itself. Perhaps this scarcity is not inevitable. Perhaps, in high-achieving Asian families, disability does not have to be treated as a dead end. Perhaps the radical imagination offered by filmmakers can help us reshape reality—because as human beings, we are all ultimately fragile. 00:00 – First impressions of the two films 08:11 – Rosemead: a true tragedy, or a “dead end” shaped by a failure of imagination 19:01 – The sister character in Take Me Home: refusing self-sacrifice and searching for a more sustainable path 31:01 – The radical ending of Take Me Home 36:39 – Director Liz Sargent on “radical imagination” 45:53 – To what extent the film industry can support disabled actors 55:31 – The lag in policy support for mental and psychological health 59:11 – The Asian community's view of “family shame” and meritocracy 71:14 – Human beings are fragile to begin with 【买咖啡 Please Support Us】 如果喜欢这期节目并愿意想要给我们买杯咖啡: 海外用户:https://www.patreon.com/cyberpinkfm 海内用户:https://afdian.com/a/cyberpinkfm 商务合作邮箱:cyberpinkfm@gmail.com 商务合作微信:CyberPink2022 If you like our show and want to support us, please consider the following: Those Abroad: https://www.patreon.com/cyberpinkfm Those in China: https://afdian.com/a/cyberpinkfm Business Inquiries Email: cyberpinkfm@gmail.com Business Inquiries WeChat: CyberPink2022

For the month of February, Not A Bomb is shining a spotlight on some of the greatest Black directors in cinematic history. This week, Troy and Brad shift gears from grounded crime dramas to full‑throttle grindhouse fantasy as they explore their first film from RZA — the Wu‑Tang Clan legend turned filmmaker — with his 2012 martial‑arts epic The Man with the Iron Fists.Set in the chaotic, neon‑splashed world of Jungle Village, the film follows a humble blacksmith who becomes entangled in a violent power struggle between assassins, warriors, mercenaries, and one extremely committed Russell Crowe. Drawing inspiration from Shaw Brothers classics, spaghetti westerns, and old‑school kung fu cinema, RZA blends genre homage with his own hip‑hop sensibilities to create something loud, stylish, and completely unrestrained. With bone‑crunching fight scenes, outrageous characters, and a world that feels ripped straight from a fever‑dream comic book, The Man with the Iron Fists asks a simple question: can pure passion and love for martial‑arts cinema overcome a chaotic script and some questionable acting choices? Troy and Brad dig into RZA's directorial vision, the film's wild production energy, and why this gonzo kung‑fu mashup has earned a cult following.Sharpen your blades — this one gets rowdy. The Man with the Iron Fists is directed by RZA and stars Russell Crowe, Cung Lee, Lucy Liu, Bryon Mann, RZA, Rick Yune, David Bautista, and Jamie ChungWant to help support the show? This week on Another Pass, Sam and Case are joined by Zorikh Lequidre to revisit Shazam! Fury of the Gods. We break down the sequel's mythic swing, its tonal tightrope between family comedy and divine spectacle, and whether this lightning strike deserved a brighter fate at the box office. Complex Character History and Naming (02:43) The Shazam character has undergone multiple renamings, now sometimes called "The Captain" to differentiate from original versions. Comics have introduced variants like Mary Marvel and Junior (Freddie Freeman's hero name) to expand the lore. The character's fluctuating comic presence, with cancellations and restarts, impacts fan engagement and continuity. Zorak's project, Captain Marvel Culture, explores these variants in cultural and historical contexts, highlighting the character's societal relevance. Actor and Fan Perspectives on Shazam (07:30) Sam Alicea shared her positive cosplay experience as Mary Marvel, emphasizing the character's wholesome reception in fandom. Both Sam and Case Aiken noted that the first Shazam movie was colorful and fun, appealing to casual viewers with good pacing and humor. Case's personal connection to the character goes back to childhood superhero creations, reinforcing the deep fan roots. The first film balanced the youthful and superhero personas well, unlike the sequel where the older cast created dissonance. Challenges with Sequel Timing and Casting (14:00) The four-year gap between the first and second Shazam movies caused problematic aging of the cast, making the characters less believable as teenagers. The COVID-19 pandemic limited crowd scenes, affecting the movie's atmosphere and fight sequences, leading to a "COVID movie" feel with socially distanced extras. The sequel's timing made character maturity inconsistent, with Zachary Levi's older age conflicting with immature superhero behavior, reducing audience sympathy. The lack of continuity in character growth and the absence of younger kid scenes weakened the family dynamic established in the first film. Plot, Powers, and Mythological Elements The movie's story and mythological adaptations were discussed, focusing on the Daughters of Atlas and their powers, plus how mythology was reinterpreted (28:58). Invented Mythology and Powers of Atlas' Daughters (29:00) The film introduced three daughters of Atlas, a creative deviation from classical mythology that was accepted as a fun concept. Helen Mirren's character uses force fields and telekinesis, Lucy Liu's character employs "chaos" powers resembling mind control, and Rachel Zegler's character has axis-based powers, visually impressive but not well explained. The powers were often scene-dependent rather than consistent, especially Helen Mirren's varying abilities. The dome barrier served as a plot device to isolate the final fight and prevent intervention from other heroes, a trope common in superhero films. Mythology vs. Comic Lore (31:33) The movie used traditional Shazam power origins (Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, Mercury) rather than newer comic variations. Discussion considered linking the characters to the broader DC mythos, such as the New Gods, but the film stuck to simpler concepts. The film's magic and powers were occasionally connected to Dungeons & Dragons references, reflecting the script's mix of fantasy influences. The casting of iconic actors like Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu added gravitas despite the powers being plot-driven. Narrative and Visual Critiques of Powers and Effects (35:00) The dome and powers' visual effects felt forced or inconsistent, serving more as story contrivances than meaningful world-building. The chaotic power, mainly mind control, lacked thematic clarity despite being the most consistent. The movie struggled to integrate powers into the plot logically, often introducing new abilities at convenience moments. The limited impact of the dome on the city was noted, with little attention to realistic consequences of such an event. Family Dynamics and Character Development A major theme was how the sequel mishandled the Shazam family dynamic, focusing too much on superhero forms and not enough on the kids' human sides (40:00). Underused Supporting Characters and Forced Representation (40:00) Pedro's gay reveal felt forced due to minimal screen time and lack of character development. The less prominent kids, especially Eugene and Pedro, were overshadowed by their superhero forms, weakening emotional engagement. Darla remained the heart of the family, carrying much of the emotional weight and humor, consistent with the first film. The sequel relied heavily on superhero personas rather than showing genuine child characters, harming the family's relatability. Mismatch of Actor Ages and Character Portrayals (46:30) The aging cast, particularly Zachary Levi, struggled to convincingly portray teenage characters, making immature behavior less palatable. The lack of contrasting younger versions of Billy and other kids reduced the dynamic tension present in the original movie. The sequel missed chances to explore Billy's growth and his struggles with leadership and abandonment issues meaningfully. Sam noted the film's good attempt to show Billy's fear of aging out of foster care as a motivation, but this was not fully developed. Lost Opportunities for Emotional Payoff (53:00) The film failed to create a satisfying emotional journey for Billy, especially regarding his insecurities and leadership challenges. The family's support was underutilized in key moments, leaving Billy's character arc feeling incomplete. The sequel lacked the sense of belonging and acceptance that made the first film's family dynamic resonate. Case and Sam suggested that a powerful second-act scene showing Billy's vulnerability and the family's encouragement was needed to strengthen the story. Critique and Proposed Fixes for the Sequel The panel proposed several realistic improvements to the sequel's structure, pacing, and character focus to enhance its emotional and narrative impact (56:00). Strengthening the Second Act and Family Bonding (56:00) Add scenes where the kids remain in their human forms to highlight their vulnerabilities, creating richer character moments. Insert a confrontation scene where Billy expresses frustration at the family's lack of unity, followed by reassurance from siblings. Shorten or remove the cringy Wonder Woman date scene to maintain tone and pacing. Show more of the lesser-used kids at school, depicting their struggles balancing normal life and superhero identities. Improving the Final Battle with the Dragon (31:30, 56:00, 01:32:50) Make the fight more dynamic by having Billy repeatedly say "Shazam" to power up the staff, requiring him to transform back to human form intermittently. Introduce stages in the fight where the hero tries different tactics, fails, then devises a winning plan. Include moments of vulnerability where Billy dodges attacks and avoids damage, adding tension and realism. Use the environment inside the dome better, possibly including some civilians or other stakes, if COVID protocols allow. Enhancing Character Scenes and Emotional Arcs (01:40:00) Show the kids' defeat when Helen Mirren's character escapes by turning back into their child forms, emphasizing their youth and fallibility. Add a scene where Billy admits to failure and receives encouragement from his siblings, reinforcing the family theme. Develop more natural, character-driven moments such as a school scene involving Skittles, tying in humor and personality. Streamline the plot to reduce the number of major events, allowing more screen time for character interactions and growth. Long-Term Franchise Vision: TV Series Format (01:14:30, 01:49:00) The panel agreed a TV series would better suit the story, allowing the actors to age naturally and explore the characters in depth. Proposed dividing the cast so Billy, Mary, and Freddie attend college while the younger kids remain in high school, creating parallel storylines. This approach resembles a "Happy Days with superpowers" format, supporting gradual character evolution and maintaining audience engagement. The TV format would also allow passing powers to new kids as the original characters grow up, ensuring franchise longevity. Production Context and External Influences The discussion recognized COVID-19's major impact on production, release timing, and overall movie quality, affecting creative decisions and execution (14:00, 01:52:00). COVID-19 Pandemic Effects (14:00) Production delays and social distancing protocols limited extras and crowd scenes, affecting the movie's atmosphere and fight choreography. The necessity of a smaller dome and fewer characters in scenes was a direct result of COVID restrictions. The four-year gap between movies was unplanned but forced by the pandemic, causing casting and story continuity issues. These factors contributed to the movie feeling disjointed and less cohesive compared to the first film. Script and Franchise Challenges (25:00) Multiple script rewrites were needed after Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam was spun off into his own movie, forcing major plot changes. The absence of Black Adam as a villain removed a key expected antagonist, weakening the sequel's threat level and fan expectations. The movie was released amid DC's shifting cinematic universe plans, reducing the likelihood of future sequels or franchise expansion. Despite plans to connect with the Justice Society and tease Mr. Mind, these elements remained unresolved, signaling franchise uncertainty. Casting and Political Context (01:06:00) Gal Gadot's performance as Wonder Woman was noted as uneven and disconnected from the main cast's energy. The panel acknowledged Gadot's political stances have affected her reception among some fans, adding complexity to her role's acceptance. The awkwardness of Billy's romantic scene with Wonder Woman was criticized for tone and appropriateness, detracting from character coherence. Zachary Levi's personal controversies and public persona complicated audience reception of his performance, especially given the film's tonal demands.
Fletcher Powell says one new movie hinges on an exceptional performance.

Message us here! How do you turn a haunting true story about family mental illness into a national conversation about stigma? This is the third and final episode of the series diving into the movie "Rosemead," a moving true story about how a Chinese immigrant mother (played by Lucy Liu) faces schizophrenia, stigma, and the fear of becoming a burden. In this episode, director Eric Lin shares how he was able to create such a honest, complex portrait of mental illness in a marginalized family.Eric opens up about seeing his own family dynamics reflected in the script: the pressure to appear strong, the instinct to hide hard truths, and the painful isolation that grows when a community doesn't have the language or resources to help. We go behind the camera to explore how the team built an honest, human portrayal of psychosis. Eric drew from first-person accounts and documentaries to shape psychotic episodes that feel present yet accessible. That craft choice keeps Joe grounded in our empathy rather than lost in stereotype. We also confront the delicate thread tying public fear of mass shootings to mental illness, and why the film refuses sensational shortcuts while acknowledging a parent's very real terror. The finale gets the care it deserves: Lucy Liu's performance arrives in a single, shattering take for the devastating ending. The result is not shock for its own sake, but a moment that honors love, loss, and the cost of silence. If you care about mental health, immigrant family dynamics, or the ethics of portraying schizophrenia on screen, you'll find a lot to resonate with. Go see "Rosemead" in theaters so you don't miss being part of the conversation.Resources:Rosemead on IG: @rosemeadfilmErin Lin on IG: @holdtheframeSupport the showIf you're navigating someone's mental health or emotional issues, join KulaMind, our community and support platform. Message us here!A headline never tells the whole story, and the movie "Rosemead" refuses to let us look away. In this episode, star of "Rosemead," Lawrence Shou, unpacks a true-story-inspired film about a Chinese immigrant mother (played by Lucy Liu), a teenage son named Joe (Shou) navigating schizophrenia, and the quiet heartbreak that unfolds when love collides with stigma and a patchwork mental health system. Lawrence brings us inside his process of weeks of research, clinician interviews, and on-set practices that made his performance so hauntingly real. Our conversation traces how psychosis actually presents: not just shouting or destruction, but blankness, withdrawal, and a mind overloaded by grief and fear. Lawrence explains how Joe's symptoms are shaped by trauma and context, including anxiety about mass shootings and the loss of his father. We talk about cultural pressures in immigrant families: why silence can feel safer than asking for help and how that silence magnifies risk. Lawrence shares how reframing treatment as a path to agency, combined with psychoeducation and community support, can make a tangible difference for families who are exhausted and scared. If you've ever wondered what schizophrenia looks like up close, how to avoid snap judgments, or how to show up when someone you love is slipping away, this episode is for you."Rosemead" is out in theaters January 9th. Message us here!A mother, a son, and a community caught between love and stigma: the new movie "Rosemead" (produced by Lucy Liu) hits like a quiet earthquake. After watching the early screening, I ugly-cried when I found out that it was based on a true story. Because the story tackles the complexities of loving someone with mental illness, I just had to talk about it here. In this episode, I sit down with "Rosemead" actor Anzi De Benedetto to unpack how a true story about schizophrenia, grief, and culture moves beyond clichés and into the messy details of real life. What does support look like when friends don't have the right language? How does a family navigate care when stigma and “face” loom over every choice?Anzi shares his path to the role of Stan, a well-intentioned friend whose lighthearted validation brings comfort, but only to a certain level. We explore the line between empathy and minimization, the moment when a “pep talk” must give way to professional help, and why understanding psychosis as an ongoing condition, not just a singular event. The conversation expands into the cultural dynamics inside Chinese American communities depicted in the film.Still reeling from the emotional impact of the movie, I had to ask Anzi about his journey with acting that brought him to "Rosemead." He offers a rare look into the acting craft as emotional science: breathwork, body cues, and set safety over mythology, mirroring the same regulation skills I also teach. If Rosemead is screening near you, go see it and tell us what you think. Fair warning- it's not for the faint of heart. Bring tissues. Usually when you stuff too many genres into a movie, you come out with a bloated, overstuffed, pretentious turkey of a movie, but not with “Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair.” In it we get westerns, anime/manga, Kung-Fu action, exploitation movie and a pulpy bloody mess but it all fits into a 4 hour 35 minute mammoth movie, In 2003, “Kill Bill: Vol 1” was released followed by “Kill Bill: Vol. 2” in 2004 as Quentin Tarantino's 4th and 5th movies. “Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair” combines those two movies together along with some extra footage. A simple plot explanation is The Bride must kill her ex-boss and lover Bill who betrayed her at her wedding rehearsal, shot her in the head and took away her unborn daughter. But first, she must make the other four members of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad suffer. Is it worth going to the theater to see this for the extra footage, or if you haven't seen it, to see everything in this? Check out this episode to find out. “Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair” stars Uma Thurman, David Carradine, Lucy Liu, Vivica A. Fox, Michael Madsen, Daryl Hannah, Julie Dreyfus, Chiaki Kuriyama, Sonny Chiba, Gordon Liu, Michael Parks, Michael Bowen, Jun Kunimura, Kenji Oba, Yuki Kazamatsuri, James Parks, Sakichi Sato and Jonathan Loughran. "Rosemead" is a drama film, directed by Eric Lin in his directorial debut, from a screenplay by Marilyn Fu, based on a 2017 LA Times column by Frank Shyong. It stars Lucy Liu as an ailing woman who is stricken by the discovery of her teenage son's violent obsessions and must go to great lengths to protect him, and possibly others, in this portrait of a Chinese American family. The film premiered at the 2025 Tribeca Festival to positive reviews, particularly for Liu, who received the best notices of her career. Liu was kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about her experience working on the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is releasing in theaters on December 5th from Vertical Entertainment. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that would rather go to literal prison than marry a man. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) enter their showgirl era with the ultimate lesbian cowgirl diva, Brooke Eden (@brookeedenmusic), and talk about why the 2002 Oscar-winning movie-musical, Chicago, Should've Been Gay. Chicago is a millennial casting wet-dream with Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Queen Latifah, Mýa and a tragically underutilized Lucy Liu. If you haven't seen the movie (or the 1975 stage show it's based on– hot take but the movie is better), it's essentially Orange is the New Black: The Musical. Although Chicago puts our stars Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly into the overtly heteronormative world of the 1920s, there is little to no hetero explanation for 99% of the plot. The story is set in a time period when people could end up in jail just for being gay, so it honestly does not surprise us that Queen Latifah is essentially running a lesbian harem on Murderesses Row. Sure, these specific women are in jail because they killed their husbands (and side-pieces), but is that not the gayest reason to be in jail? In fact, we reckon Murderesses Row functions like a 1920s HER. If we had a choice between marrying a man or killing said man, going to jail and getting to hook up with Velma freaking Kelly, call us Piper Chapman because we're skipping GO and doing the Cell Block Tango. We know one thing for sure, Chicago Should've Been Gay (and all that jazz). Give us your own answers to our Q & Gay on Instagram and follow along on Facebook, TikTok, and BlueSky @lezhangoutpod.
