Welcome to Episode 207. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to talk with rare book dealer and author Rebecca Romney. Her first book was PRINTER'S ERROR: Irreverent Stories from Book History, and she made a significant contribution to the world of romance fiction with her collection, THE ROMANCE NOVEL IN ENGLISH: A Rare Book Survey, 1769-1999. You won't want to miss our conversation with Rebecca at the end of the episode. Jane Austen fans will be particularly intrigued to hear about her current project! We have had some genuinely delightful Biblio Adventures since the last episode. Two were joint jaunts: seeing Caroline Leavitt discuss her new novel, DAYS OF WONDER, at R.J. Julia Booksellers in Madison, CT, and watching SHIRLEY, a trippy movie about a fictionalized Shirley Jackson based on the novel of the same name by Susan Scarf Merrell. Emily and Aunt Ellen visited Yu and Me Books in NYC's Chinatown. We also each attended different virtual events through the North Haven Public Library. Chris attended “A Literary Examination of Power and Art” with Xochitl Gonzalez, discussing her books ANITA DE MONTE LAUGHS LAST and OLGA DIES DREAMING. Emily attended “The Foods, People, and Innovations That Feed Us – A Sweeping History of Food and Culture” with Smithsonian Curator Paula J. Johnson, discussing the book SMITHSONIAN AMERICAN TABLE. See the episode show notes for links to recordings of both events. In our reading lives, we finished a variety of books and stories. BLESS YOUR HEART (cozy horror) by Lindy Ryan, DIGITAL MINIMALISM (self-help/productivity) by Cal Newport, and JAMES (literary fiction) by Percival Everett (the audiobook is fantastic!), THE EDITOR: How Publishing Legend Judith Jones Shaped Culture in America (biography) by Sara B. Franklin, PRIDE AND PRESTON LIN (romance) by Christina Hwang Dudley, HOW TO READ A BOOK (literary fiction/romance) by Monica Wood, and two short stories: “Vampires in the Lemon Grove” from the collection VAMPIRES IN THE LEMON GROVE: And Other Stories by Karen Russell and “The Bookeeper's Wife” by Willa Cather. As always, we also talk about what we're reading and hoping to read. We are super excited about an upcoming Biblio Adventure with Aunt Ellen to The Ripped Bodice bookstore in Brooklyn. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we enjoyed recording it. Happy Listening and Happy Reading! Emily & Chris https://www.bookcougars.com/blog-1/2024/episode207

This week I am joined by Dr. Stephanie Lau, she is research faculty in the School of Education at VCU, she has a Masters of Arts in Teaching as well as a PhD in Public Policy and Administration. She is also a wife and mom of two young boys, and on top of all this she has co-run our neighborhood bookclub with me since 2021! Stephanie picked one of the many books we have read for bookclub, Olga Dies Dreaming Xóchitl González. Olga is a wedding planner in Brooklyn trying to find her way, but will her mother-turned-Puerto-Rico-revolutionary ruin all her plans? This book is LAY-ERED, there is so much about family, parenthood, Puerto Rican history, love, loss, and maybe everything else in-between. We had a great time talking about this book and I loved the thoughtfulness Stephanie came to this conversation with, and how much of the nuance from the novel she was able to cipher out and demonstrate what a tremendous book this is.For the drink we chose a Caipinhara, which is the national drink of Brazil and absolutely delicious. Why did we choose a Brazilian drink to discuss a book largely about Puerto Rico? You will just have to listen to the episode to find out!Caipinhara Recipe½ lime, quartered1 teaspoon white sugar2 ½ fluid ounces cachaça (Brazilian rum)1 cup ice cubes Squeeze and drop lime wedges into a large rocks glass. Add sugar and muddle until juices release.Pour in cachaça and ice. Stir well.Although I was not able to find a Zero-proof cachaça, using a Ritual Rum will work to make a refreshing alcohol free option! In this episode:Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA) CaipinharaAnita de Monte Laughs Last - Xóchitl González latest book!Vote for DITL for Best Podcast at Richmond Magazine (voting is going until April 26th!)

''Packed with richly imagined characters and vivacious prose'' (Esquire), Xochitl Gonzalez's debut novel Olga Dies Dreaming tells a tale of family secrets, Latinx politics in a gentrifying Brooklyn neighborhood, and romance set against the backdrop of the most devastating hurricane in Puerto Rican history. Winner of the Brooklyn Public Library Book Prize in Fiction and the New York City Book Award, it was named a best book of 2022 by The Washington Post, NPR, The New York Times, and TIME magazine. Gonzalez's nonfiction has appeared in Vogue, Allure, The Cut, and other periodicals, and her commentary writing for The Atlantic was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. A tale of legacy, class, and art, Anita De Monte Laughs Last follows a first-generation Ivy League art student's quest to uncover the work of a brilliant but largely forgotten 1980s-era painter. Olga Dies Dreaming is guest Xochitl Gonzalez's new novel—and how you interpret it might tell you something about your political persuasion. This week we are exploring what it means to be radical in fiction—especially when what you're trying to be radical about is packaged as a fast-paced story. This is the subversive (meant in the best sense of the word) nature of fiction with a cause—which we explore this week in all its nuanced glory. Adelante! Learn more about your ad choices. But we eventually do talk about books. ** Also, this is our last episode  before our summer break, but we will be back in the fall rested and refreshed, with more amazing books to share with you all. Aileen read Olga Dies Dreaming by Sochi Gomez, a story that explores two different interpretations of the American Dream inside one Puerto Rican family living in New York City.  Lauren read (and absolutely adored) Women of Light by Kali Fajardo-Anstine, which follows a Mexican American family that has been displaced and resettled, and how they try to integrate and re-establish their lives.  Alisa read Martita, I Remember You by Sandra Cisneros, a heart-rending story about missing friends told by a Mexican woman living in Chicago. And Josie just couldn't put down Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, a page turning supernatural romance of the highest order, this book delved into Mayan mythology.

On the night of the presidential elections in 2016, Xochitl Gonzalez was at the Javits Center in New York City attending an event in support of Hillary Clinton's presidential nomination. She was talking to “other very liberal, Democratic volunteers” when the subject of Puerto Rico came up. Xochitl, born and raised into a Nuyorican family, was stunned and frustrated when she realized that nobody knew anything about the injustices her family's ancestral home had gone through. It was then and there that she decided that her first book would be about the experiences of the Puerto Rican diaspora. Xochitl's debut novel, Olga Dies Dreaming (2021) tells the fictional story of a Nuyorican family from Brooklyn. Olga, the main character of the novel, is an amalgamation of Xochitl's own life experiences as a daughter of Latino militant activist parents and her career as a wedding planner for wealthy New Yorkers. In this episode of Latino USA, Xochitl sits down with Maria Hinojosa to discuss why she wanted her first book to be so autobiographical but also highly political. And how she decided to leave her wedding business behind to fulfill her dream of writing.

Sometimes our dreams take decades to manifest. And while this is completely true, we can also have several different successes on the way to what is most meant for us. This week's guest, Xochitl Gonzalez, has worn many hats in her professional life but none so rewarding as finally becoming a published author. Her debut novel was a New York Times bestseller months before its release and they also made a pilot for a series on Hulu. While we won't know if the pilot will be picked up for another few weeks, there's no doubt that the road ahead for Xochitl's book, Olga Dies Dreaming, is prosperous.  Xochitl received her MFA from the University of Iowa's Writers Workshop and she's the recipient of the Michener-Copernicus Prize in fiction and the winner of the 2019 Disquiet Literary Prize. She's been published in Bustle, Vogue, and The Cut and is a contributor for The Atlantic where you can also find her newsletter “Brooklyn Everywhere.”  Keep up with the going's on in Xochitl's exciting work via her website. You can also follow her on Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok. Get your copy of Olga Dies Dreaming by clicking here. Don't become a slave to your business. You have earned all of your pain points, don't hate them or discredit them. They are there for you. What happens when you choose, actively, NOT to be defined by something? As a creative, it's so valuable to own what you know and not hide from it. Don't reinvent the wheel.  Always find your joy! Perhaps middle age is more of a mid-life catharsis rather than a crisis. Learn to edit the use of your time and you'll be more successful.  Batch task your time, especially as a writer. Let yourself have “social” days and then deeply “focused” days.  Most success comes after a lot of hard, focused work, and then a waiting period. Lean into the waiting period. Allow it to be ok.  Every moment doesn't have to be about building your business. It's important to make yourself the focus some of the time.  Consider manifesting things you're afraid of because then they become less scary.  If you're going to “go in” be sure you go “all the way in.” Intentionally stop doing what you don't want to do in order to focus on what you most desire. Only then will you be able to create it.  You don't always have to be chasing something new. It's ok to sit still. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Hi pals! We're back after a little sick leave last week but we're raring to dissect some pop culture and internet news. After a catch-up, we debrief over Rebel Wilson's kind of creepy TikTok videos. Are they part of a conspiracy theory or simply a Gen X using the app differently? Next, if you've been on TikTok this week, you've probably heard of West Elm Caleb. The furniture designer at West Elm went viral this week after a slew of women realised he was a serial dater. But was the subsequent doxxing, meme-ifying and releasing personal info too far? In this segment, we reference this VICE piece titled ‘'West Elm Caleb' Is Just Some Guy' by Gita Jackson, Stop Canceling Normal People Who Go Viral by Rebecca Jennings for Vox and In Defence of West Elm Caleb by Vanessa Hsieh for iD. Maggie also reads out a section from her Refinery29 article Why We're So Enthralled By TikTok's ‘Couch Guy', According To A Couples Therapist. On Australian shores, influencer Jadé Tuncdoruk (Tunchy) is in hot water after calling out a small business and demanding a refund on unused accommodation. By weaponising her followers to get what she wants we ask, when do influencers go too far? And is the piling on from private businesses and accounts like Celeb Spell Check ‘getting back' or simply a brutal back and forth that hurts everyone involved? In this piece we reference a Pedestrian piece by Sweeney Preston titled Jadé Tunchy Has Apologised For Racially Cooked Comments She Made About Uber Eats Drivers. As well as Maggie's piece for MTV Australia titled The Problem With Celeb Spellcheck. Two recs each to make up for lost time! Jas recommends the film Spencer starring Kristen Stewart as well as the Twilight podcast The Big Hit Show. Maggie recommends the book, Olga Dies Dreaming by Xochitl Gonzalez as well as the TV show Love Me on Binge. This week marks Invasion Day, a day of mourning and a reminder that the effects of colonisation continue today. We ask you to continue to listen to First Nations voices, to learn from our Traditional Owners, and to want to do better. If you're in the position to, we urge you to Pay The Rent. Always was, always will be Aboriginal land.Chat next week. xo See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Xochitl Gonzalez talks to Carol Fitzgerald about her debut novel, Olga Dies Dreaming, which is a Bookreporter Bets On selection. In the novel, Olga is a wedding planner for New York socialite types and deftly handles all of their quirks and high-end dreams. Her brother is a politician in Brooklyn, who strives to represent the Puerto Rican community. While they both appear to be in control of their own lives, these appearances are deceiving. Both are haunted by their absent mother, who was a revolutionary in Puerto Rico. In the wake of Hurricane Maria, their lives collide with their mother again. Xochitl talks about how her life and writing have been influenced by growing up in Brooklyn. She remembers the area before it was the more gentrified place it is now, and those memories infuse her writing. They discuss her writing of the book, which started at the Iowa Writers Workshop and was once conceived as a memoir. She also wrote the Hulu pilot script for Olga Dies Dreaming and shares her writing process for that, as well as what it was like being on set with the cast and crew.
