The best two English teams in the last several years have been Liverpool and Manchester City. On the field and off it they are seen as the among best in the country. However, in one department Liverpool has recently had a distinct advantage. Due to the work of Ian Graham Liverpool are widely considered league leaders in their use of data science. But that might be about to change. It appears Manchester City is building a data science department to rival Liverpool's. Last week Training Ground Guru reported that Manchester City hired Laurie Shaw as their new Lead AI Scientist, their fourth data-driven hire within a year. Today we ask: can Manchester City overtake Liverpool in English football's data race? Guest: Paul Neilson (@pjneilson) is the Director of Performance at SkillCorner, which provides data services to the Football industry. He was formerly the Head of Performance Lab at Prozone. Simon Austin (@sport_simon) is the founder of Training Ground Guru, which is a website that reports on the teams behind the teams in professional football. On this episode I interview with Simon Austin, sports journalist and Founder of the Training Ground Guru - shining a light on the work going on behind the scenes in professional football. On work-life balance Simon says; "I think it differs for each person and I'm not sure I've got in right. I love what I do and spend a lot of time engrossed in it." Simon set up the Training Ground Guru in 2017 having previously worked for the BBC for over 10 years and as a freelancer for several national newspapers. He didn't think there was enough information being shared and in order to understand what's going on, on match day you need to understand what's happening on the training ground during the week. And so the Training Ground Guru was created; shining a light on what's going on behind the scenes in football. Very much breaking away from the traditional pattern of how things have also been done in the industry. It's taken a while for Simon to build up that trust and respect with the clubs but the response has been great so far. As a knock on this has led to the media at different clubs showing an interest and getting involved as well. I've been in journalism for over 20 years and always had a passion in this area. It's a growing area that hasn't really been covered. If a reader says; 'that was interesting', then that's enough for Simon to take as acknowledgement for what he's set out to do in providing insight. He's always wanted his own site and something that he's in control of; putting forward his own philosophy. There's definitely more freedom, however, Simon places a huge emphasis on 'thinking about your readers' and what they want. In fact he thinks of them as his boss now. Final take-away: "Be yourself. There's a lot of pressure to conform and follow the lead of others. A lot of the time this is the road to ruin. Everyone has their own journey and their own story." If you enjoyed the interview with Simon then please do start a conversation with him on; Twitter LinkedIn Facebook YouTube You can also find more details on their website If you liked this episode then please do leave the show a rating and review on iTunes or the platform that you use to listen to podcasts. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/perfectimbalance4/message

Today's guest is Jukka Varmanen, a professional coach from Heinola, Finland. Jukka started his journey as a coach in 2000 with the junior organization of Heinolan Kiekko as an U18 coach. After two seasons in Heinola he joined the junior organization of HIFK in Helsinki. After spending five years with HIFK he worked two years with Lahden Kiekko-Reipas which is now the Lahti Peilcans. In 2009 he gained his first experience on the professional level as an assistant coach with Jokipojat. For the 2010-11 season he became the head coach of the team. In our conversation Jukka describes his time as a head coach in Joensuu as a one of the most challenging barriers he had to overcome on his coaching path so far. Reflecting back the lessons he has learned there were very valuable to him. The experience he has gained there is until today his favorite failure. Afterwards he moved on and became the U20 head coach for Vierumäki United for two seasons. In 2013 he went back to the professional level and worked for three seasons as an assistant coach for his hometown team Peliitat. From 2011 till 2016 he also worked for the IIHCE in Vierumäki. During the 2016-17 season he gained his first experience in a different culture with the Chinese KHL team Kunlun Stars. After spending one season in the KHL he went back to Finland and joined the Lahti Pelicans in January 2018 as an assistant coach. After he had worked with the Pelicans he returned to the IIHCE for one year. During the 2019-20 season he worked in the NLA for SC Bern where he gained his second experience in a different culture. This season he will work again as an assistant coach in Liiga for JYP Jyväskylä. Furthermore, Jukka gained experience with the Finnish U18, U20 and Men's National Team. In 2019 he won gold medals with both the Finnish U20 and Men's National teams at the IIHF world championships. With Jukka we discussed his educational background in Vierumäki and how the studies have impacted his coaching. As he has gained a lot of experience as an assistant coach, we also talked with him what his role is in establishing a culture, identity and environment in a team. Additionally, we explore with him about the experience he has gained in different cultures. Finally, we spoke with Jukka about the time he spent working with the Finnish National Team program and what he has been taking away from it so far. As always, we ask Jukka for some recommendations of resources he found useful and interesting: "Sacred Hoops" and "The Last Season" by Phil Jackson, and "The Culture Code" by Daniel Coyle. Jukka also recommends several podcasts including "Training Ground Guru", "The Way of Champions" and "Coach Your Brains Out." Finally he recommends checking out Wade Gilbert's webinars. It is evidence of a larger trend of clubs investing more heavily in their academies and renovating their training grounds. Coaching is a pursuit that takes place across many different disciplines. The finest leaders know that knowledge and wisdom are universal. After listening to a marvellous masterclass in the art of coaching from rugby coach, Eddie Jones, Rob is inspired to share some of the finest points of the interview, and the wisest lessons learned, so that you can become the best coach you can be. KEY TAKEAWAYS If you want to be successful in life, then you have to follow your passion. This requires a knowledge of one’s self, and what drives us. People who reach the pinnacle of their field, often do not become the great coaches. The great coaches are usually those who did not reach the top, but who developed drive, desire and resilience from not doing so. Perhaps the greatest skill that any coach can develop is the skill of drawing someone out of their comfort zone. The psychological side of coaching a team is not just in the game, but also in knowing when someone’s outlook or mood needs work. It can be as simple as encouraging someone to be on their “A” Game when they are not feeling positive. BEST MOMENTS ‘To become the best, you have to love what you do at a very deep level’ ‘You have to find the right captain’ ‘Develop respectful relationships, not necessarily friendships’ ‘The athletes of today are getting stronger, faster, and better’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Leader Manager Coach Podcast The Eddie Jones Interview at Training Ground Guru - https://trainingground.guru/articles/eddie-jones-the-art-of-coaching-(part-1) ABOUT THE HOST Rob Ryles is a UEFA A licensed coach with a League Managers Association qualification and a science and medicine background. We are joined by ex-Premier League referee Mark Halsey. Halsey was a Premier League referee from 1999 to 2013 and was a FIFA listed referee from 2000 til 2006. Among some of the big games he's been involved in…he was the fourth official in the 2002 FA Cup between Arsenal and Chelsea and the head referee in the 2008 League Cup between Tottenham and Chelsea. He also writes a weekly column in The Sun newspaper. But today I really just wanted to go inside the mindset of an official: how do they handle the abuse from players, what is it like make important calls, how does it feel like to make a big mistake. If you want to reach out to Mark, his Twitter handle is @RefereeHalsey. Mark is also an ambassador for the Steve Prescott Foundation, which aims to raise money for cancer research. Special thanks to Philippe for the great artwork, Sam for handling all the logistics, Alex for overseeing it all and Joe who was the first one to take an interest in the show and to whom I will be eternally grateful for giving me the chance.
