I have been wanting to make a podcast for a while about the reasons that I've stepped back a little bit in my use of social media and the changes that I've made and that I've encouraged my clients in my coaching programs to make in the way that we view it and the way that we use it. Because I'm aware that for a lot of us at the moment, social media feels like a very heavy place. There's a lot of pressure, there's a lot of negativity, and if we're not mindful about how we are using it, it can take a really big emotional toll. I feel like because we talk on this podcast about the advantages of using social media to market, to reach your people who need you in your practice, it's also important to talk about how to manage our wellbeing as we do that, and also how to make sure we're putting content out there that feels aligned with our values and that feels professionally fulfilling, because in some ways I feel the platforms drag us away from those values. For a little while now, I've been feeling professionally frustrated. I am, as a reminder, a journalist who has specialised in health and beauty and interviewing. However, the landscapes within which I've worked for nearly 25 years have changed so drastically that it can sometimes feel as though you're always on the back foot. In the past 12 years, I've gone from being a print journalist to embracing social media, podcasting, video and now Substack and the need to be constantly aware of what the next big thing might be means one thing can fall by the wayside - quality.Luckily, I've been struck down by a virus over the last week, which has given me the space and time to actually take a look at what I'm doing, what I think I should be doing differently, what I'm doing too much of and what I'm not doing enough of. The main takeaway though has been how constantly going back to the drawing board and trying to reinvent the wheel is draining, overwhelming and exhausting. Nearly 40 years ago, 14 patients died at Mumbai's J.J. hospital, as the medication they took was contaminated with diethylene glycol, an industrial solvent that is toxic to human beings. Over the past few weeks, at least 16 children, a majority of them in Madhya Pradesh and a few in Rajasthan have died, and their deaths are suspected to be because of the same issue: a cough syrup, given to them for treatment, contained diethylene glycol. The issue of medicines being contaminated is not new – how it happens and how it can be stopped are both well known. And yet, India, which accredits itself as the pharmacy of the world, providing generic drugs to many parts of the globe, cannot seem to ensure that medicines for its own children are safe. What are the issues plaguing the drug regulatory system? Why do these deaths continue to take place with little accountability? And are cough syrups necessary at all for children? Tuesday morning brought another shooting near a food distribution site in Gaza — the third in as many days. This time, more than two dozen people were killed as they tried to collect emergency food aid, according to Gaza health officials and the International Committee of the Red Cross. The Israeli military acknowledged firing warning shots at "several suspects" moving toward their position, and fired additional shots at individual suspects who, they said, did not retreat. The violence may have something to do with the way Israel is now managing food distribution in Gaza.
