He had a strong partnership with Peter Taylor, who complemented Clough's strengths and weaknesses, leading to their success as a managerial duo. Rob explores the theme of resilience and overcoming obstacles. Inspired by the stories of Thomas Edison and Ernest Hemingway, Rob discusses the importance of never giving up, even in the face of adversity. He discusses the reality of life's challenges and the need to fortify oneself against them. Rob also reflects on the power of asking meaningful questions and accepting the realities of life. He shares personal experiences and encourages listeners to embrace their own journeys, finding strength and growth through hardships. KEY TAKEAWAYS The story of Thomas Edison and Ernest Hemingway serves as a reminder that setbacks and tragedies are a part of life, but it is important to persevere and rebuild. Life is filled with disappointments, losses, and challenges, but it is crucial to fortify oneself and find the courage to move forward. It is essential to accept reality and deal with it rather than wishing for things to be different. Asking oneself meaningful questions, such as what life is asking of them and how they can serve, can help navigate difficult situations. The true measure of a person's character lies in their ability to face adversity, sit with pain, and find beauty even in difficult circumstances. BEST MOMENTS "Life is hard. Life is a tragedy. Get used to it. Understand it. Live with it." "Your job is to do whatever you can to fortify yourself, be an example to others, help others to fortify themselves against the tragedy that life is on this physical plane." "Words are cheap, talk is cheap, action is where it's at." "Is it okay to be wrong? Of course. Is it bad to do due diligence? No. Is it a bad thing to sit forever at a crossroads while your life passes before your eyes? No." VALUABLE RESOURCES https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/leader-manager-coach-podcast/id1370481271?mt=2 https://www.robryles.co.uk/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMPYDVzZVnA https://www.linkedin.com/in/robertryles/?originalSubdomain=uk HOST BIO Rob Ryles is a UEFA A licensed coach with a League Managers Association qualification and a science and medicine background. The value of mentorship and guidance in personal and professional development. The power of humility and the willingness to acknowledge and learn from mistakes. BEST MOMENTS "I think a lot of us underestimate the value that we have when we coach the younger generation that's coming up and that aspires to do that." "I never thought that I couldn't fly fighter jets. I had no idea how to do it. But I never really had anybody tell me, no, you can't do that definitively." "I think the important thing is there's the hunger there and there's action behind it. That character I was just like I don't know what I'm doing, but I know that I started college and I started taking aviation related classes and I started flying and I started just doing things that were down that track." "If you're a bad apple and you can't get on with people, then you're going to struggle. And if you speak to elite coaches and you say, look, as long as you've got somebody who's got an ability, it doesn't have to be the very best in the world, but if they have an ability to perform, it's the psychological aspect that will make them world-class." Rob delves into the life and career of renowned football manager Jose Mourinho. Drawing from Patrick Barclay's book "Anatomy of a Winner," Riles explores Mourinho's journey from a middle-class upbringing in Portugal to becoming one of the most successful football managers of the modern era. Rob highlights Mourinho's unique skill set, including his intelligence, multilingual abilities, sports science knowledge, and teaching background. He also discusses Mourinho's formative years as an assistant to Sir Bobby Robson and Louis van Gaal, where he gained invaluable experience and developed trust and reliability. KEY TAKEAWAYS Jose Mourinho is a highly successful football manager and coach, known for his winning mentality. Mourinho's upbringing and early experiences in football, including working as an interpreter for Sir Bobby Robson, shaped his career. Mourinho possesses multiple intelligences, including linguistic ability, sports science knowledge, and teaching skills. He is a master psychologist, using the media and mind games to create an advantage for his teams. Mourinho is also an innovative and detail-oriented coach, integrating technical, tactical, physical, psychological, and social aspects of the game in his training sessions. BEST MOMENTS "And I think one of the, or amongst the things that excite people about Mourinho and intrigue people about Mourinho is the way in which he landed into the most successful league in the world, the English Premier League with Chelsea and how he took it by storm." "Jose Mourinho was an overnight success. Very quickly following on from the great success he had in Portugal, as anybody who is invested in the game knows, he went on to have enormous success at Chelsea, coached Manchester United, Real Madrid, and continues to be a highly successful European coach now in Italy." "He built them up to be greater than they were. He lent them every bit of belief he had and made them feel great and made them into the best players that they could possibly be." "Obsessed with detail as many great leaders and winners are. But on the football pitch, he was at the vanguard or the forefront, the cutting edge of evolution, where technical, tactical, physical and psychological aspects of football coaching are brought into the arena of everything being done together." Rob explores the concept of true authentic leadership and the qualities that make a person a true leader. He emphasises the importance of being a doer, someone who takes action and creates positive change, rather than just speaking about it. Rob also discusses the power of hope and how seemingly hopeless situations can be overcome with determination and perseverance. He delves into the role of dopamine in driving human behavior and highlights the importance of the journey rather than the destination. KEY TAKEAWAYS True leadership is about taking action and doing something, not just speaking or having a title. Life may be challenging, but very little is truly hopeless. There are countless examples of individuals overcoming seemingly impossible situations. The journey itself, not the destination, is what brings fulfillment and happiness. It's the hope and progress that give us a sense of purpose. Building relationships and being a net positive giver is crucial for personal growth and success. Trusting others and treating them positively, unless proven otherwise, can lead to more beneficial outcomes in the long run. BEST MOMENTS "A leader is not someone with a name on a door, that is, humanly created. A leader is a doer. Somebody who does something. Who takes action." "Very little is hopeless. Life is hard, brutal, challenging, probably things will take 10 times as long as you thought they will take, they will be 10 times harder, and you may not get anywhere near achieving what it is that you thought you would do in the timeframe that you hoped. But there are too many stories and there is too much evidence about human beings about individuals who have achieved great things from seemingly hopeless situations." "It's the hope that gives you the dope. It's not the achievement or it's not the acquisition necessarily, because yet today's success is tomorrow's irritation. Today's happiness is tomorrow's misery." He then delves into the concept of love, emphasising that true love is demonstrated through the investment of time. He encourages listeners to reflect on where they spend their time as it reveals their true passions and priorities. The episode also touches on the significance of being authentic and not imitating others, as well as the responsibility of leaders to take care of themselves and empower others. KEY TAKEAWAYS Stress and challenge are necessary for personal growth and development. Love is shown through the investment of time and attention. Authenticity is important; be true to yourself and avoid imitating others. As a leader, take responsibility for yourself and others. Self-determination theory, which includes autonomy, competency, and relatedness, is crucial for empowering individuals in organisations. BEST MOMENTS "If you are a mature individual who is prepared to put themselves through optimal amounts of challenge, the right amount of stress, and not look for the constant easy way, then you will forge yourself into whatever it is that you hold as your golden vision." "How do you know when somebody truly loves something or someone? They spend their time and are prepared to spend their most valuable asset, which is your time, with or on that particular person or subject." "Be yourself. Be truly and utterly yourself. It is the way" "As a leader, you have to be responsible first and foremost for yourself. But if you consider yourself a leader and you wish to influence others and be there for others and show a caring aspect for others, you need to take responsibility for them." "Self-determination theory as I see it, is something that is applicable to every successful organisation" VALUABLE RESOURCES https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/leader-manager-coach-podcast/id1370481271?mt=2 https://www.robryles.co.uk/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMPYDVzZVnA https://www.linkedin.com/in/robertryles/?originalSubdomain=uk HOST BIO Rob Ryles is a UEFA A licensed coach with a League Managers Association qualification and a science and medicine background. Rob shares a variety of insights and lessons that have stood out to him from his recent readings and experiences. Rob discusses the book "Courage is Calling: Fortune Favors the Brave" by author Ryan Holiday, highlighting the key findings and lessons from the book, which align with the philosophies discussed on the podcast. Rob emphasises that courage is not just physical, but also moral, and explores the importance of facing fear, taking small steps towards bravery, and standing up for what you believe in. KEY TAKEAWAYS Courage is a key virtue that encompasses both physical and moral bravery. It involves taking small steps and practicing bravery in everyday life. Fear is a normal part of the courageous journey. It is the first step in recognising that you are on the right path and being challenged. Courage is about answering the call and being committed to noble ideals. It requires standing up for what you believe in and speaking truth to power. The heroic journey involves selflessness and transcending personal desires. It may involve periods of depression and facing challenges alone, but it is necessary for growth and defining oneself as a hero. Heroism is about making choices and following one's ethical line. It is not just about one monumental choice, but a series of choices that shape one's character and contribute to a heroic path. He also talks about the fact that a leader's title may make them a manager, but it is their ability to inspire and lead their team that truly makes them a leader. KEY TAKEAWAYS Leadership is not solely determined by one's title, but by the perception of those being led. Being a leader means gaining the trust and respect of your team. The acronym COACH (Care, Organise, Align, Challenge, Help) highlights key qualities and actions of successful leaders who also act as coaches. Care is essential in building relationships and trust with your team. Genuine care for your team members will lead to better communication and collaboration. Organise involves placing individuals in roles that align with their strengths and skills. Effective leaders understand how to assemble a team that complements each other's abilities. BEST MOMENTS "Your title makes you a manager, but your people make you a leader." "People don't care what you know until they know how much you care." "Your job is to organise and put people, as the Harvard Business Review says, in their sweet spot." "Your job is to explain, show, demonstrate, and bring to life the vision that everybody will die for." Rob shares his thoughts and insights on various topics related to personal growth and development, beginning by discussing the concept of hierarchy and how our perception of authority figures can impact our feelings of disappointment or frustration. Rob then delves into the importance of maintaining inner peace and not letting external circumstances disturb our consciousness. He emphasises the need to focus on personal evolution and growth, seeking wisdom from others and following one's own hero's journey. KEY TAKEAWAYS Hierarchical levels in organisations and society are man-made and do not define one's worth or value. It is important to focus on personal growth and evolution rather than being concerned with positions of power. Maintain a peaceful relationship with themselves, their soul, and a higher power. By not allowing external factors or opinions to disturb this peace, individuals can navigate challenges and hierarchies with a sense of calm and confidence. Rob highlights the importance of answering the call to embark on one's own hero's journey. This involves stepping out of comfort zones, facing challenges, and following one's heart and true purpose, even if it scares them. Take responsibility and move forward: By taking ownership of one's actions and choices, individuals can make progress and grow personally and professionally. BEST MOMENTS "The only hierarchy is consciousness." "You have to worship your own, whatever you consider God to be." "From the wound comes the salve. From the problem comes the answer." Rob pays tribute to Jock Stein, a legendary figure in the world of football management, who hailed from the coalfields of Lanarkshire, Scotland, overcame adversity and went on to become one of the most esteemed football managers of his time. Rob discusses Stein's humble beginnings as a part-time player and his transition into coaching and management. He highlights Stein's exceptional work ethic, tactical knowledge, and man-management skills, which led to his success at Celtic, including winning nine consecutive championships and the European Cup in 1967. KEY TAKEAWAYS Jock Stein's upbringing in the coalfields of Lanarkshire shaped his values of hard work, determination, and team spirit, which he carried throughout his life and career. Despite facing adversity and sacrificing his own football career for the love of his family, Jock Stein remained committed to his values and ultimately found success as a coach and manager. Jock Stein's work ethic, attention to detail, and knowledge of the game set him apart as a manager. He was known for being the first to arrive at the club, studying opponents extensively, and constantly striving to improve his players. Jock Stein's ability to balance authority with a humanistic approach was evident in his relationships with players like Jimmy Johnston and George Connolly. He cared about their well-being and went above and beyond to support them. BEST MOMENTS "Jock Stein was from the world of football and football management. I'm going to be talking about a guy called Jock Stein." "Jock broke the mould. A Protestant man playing for Celtic, and as a result, lost friends and suffered because of family division." Rob interviews former professional football player Jimmy Greenhoff, who shares his experiences playing under various managers, including Sid Owens, Don Revy, Stan Cullis, Tony Waddington, and Tommy Dockham. He discusses the coaching styles and personalities of each manager and reflects on his time playing alongside notable players such as Alan Hudson and Terry Conroy. Jimmy also talks about his career at Stoke City and Manchester United, as well as his brief stint as a player-manager at Rochdale, stressing the importance of hard work and the support of family in achieving success in football. KEY TAKEAWAYS Jimmy had the privilege of playing under several esteemed managers, including Sid Owens, Don Revy, Stan Cullis, Tony Waddington, Tommy Dock, and Dave Sexton. These managers had a significant impact on his career and helped shape him as a player. Jimmy had a special partnership with Alan Hudson during his time at Stoke City. Their on-field chemistry and ability to read each other's movements made them a formidable duo and a joy to watch for fans. Despite not enjoying running, Jimmy recognises the necessity of fitness and conditioning to excel in the game, focussing on the value of practicing specific skills, such as losing defenders and making well-timed runs. There may be moments or things we wish we had done differently. However, remaining humble and appreciative of the opportunities we have is vital. BEST MOMENTS "He was one of my best mates there as well, even though he was about five years older than me." "He suggested to Don Revy that they play me up front. And he did, he played him, he did what Sid asked and the rest was kind of, it was the best thing that happened to me." "He was strict that way. Yes. Yeah. It was all for you though, what he was doing and having a go at. It was all for you, for the benefit of you." "I felt he was. You heard a lot of people nearly had them to tears. Rob shares a personal story about his hiking experience in Scotland. He describes how walking in the mountains is like a metaphor for life and the journey of success, and reflects on the importance of having a vision, taking the next step, and not looking back. KEY TAKEAWAYS Being open to change and planning for new experiences can lead to personal growth and discovery. Just like in walking or in life, having a clear idea of where you want to go and a plan to get there can help guide your journey. Looking back can hold you back from progress and hinder your journey towards success. Sometimes, it's necessary to pause, reflect, and recharge before continuing on. Taking time to rest can help maintain motivation and prevent burnout. BEST MOMENTS "And the point I want to make here is that walking is like life. It's like the journey of success, or the hero's journey, as I seem to talk about on every podcast." "You don't know how good things can get. You really do not know how good things can be if you have the faith to step out into your own journey." "Just keep looking the next step in front of you and taking the next step. And you climb to what you think is the next summit, and then there's another. You don't know what's beyond the next turn." "But I kept trying and kept looking. And then eventually I saw a path where somebody had trodden before. Like a great poem, The Bridge Builder. Thank you for those who went before and trod the path." Rob shares his key learnings and insights that have impacted him recently, focussing upon the fact that life is not meant to be easy and that we should challenge the notion that everything should be comfortable and effortless. Rob discusses the importance of closing the gap between where we are and where we want to be, and the need to trust ourselves and follow our principles. He also explores the concepts of momentum, making tough decisions, and shouldering responsibility. KEY TAKEAWAYS Life is tough and full of challenges. We should challenge the notion that everything should be easy and comfortable, embracing difficulties and overcoming obstacles. It's important to take small steps and make incremental progress towards our goals, whether it's mastering a skill or achieving personal growth. Trust oneself and follow one's own principles and beliefs. Trusting oneself leads to personal growth and the ability to make decisions confidently. Embrace momentum: Take action and build momentum in our lives, as small steps can lead to exponential progress. BEST MOMENTS "Everything seems to be now, particularly in the first world, the Western world, it's all about making things easy and comfortable. It's damn well wrong." "Life is tough. Challenge is tough, it's meant to be there and getting to the top in anything and being the best person you can be and achieving your dreams and goals ain't easy." "Run from comfort. Life ain't easy. Not meant to be easy. Easy's death." "It's not about being nice. It's about being the toughest angel there is. It's that steel and velvet." Rob interviews Andy Neillie, a leadership expert and author, who shares his journey from experiencing bad bosses to becoming a successful leader himself. He discusses his book, "The Golden Principles," which draws lessons from his rescued dogs and applies them to leadership. Andy emphasises the importance of servant leadership, where leaders prioritise the well-being of their team members. He also introduces his four-tiered approach to leadership, focusing on conviction, competence, character, and covenant. KEY TAKEAWAYS The four leadership principles discussed by Andy Neillie are conviction, competence, character, and covenant. These principles encompass having a vision, executing tasks effectively, demonstrating strong moral character, and balancing personal and formal leadership responsibilities. Good leaders are able to see the bigger picture and have a clear vision for their organisation or team. They understand the importance of setting goals and strategies that align with the overall mission. Competence in leadership involves not only being skilled in one's own role, but also being able to effectively manage and inspire a team to perform at their best. Leaders must be able to make decisions, manage risk, and create an environment that fosters success. Character is a crucial aspect of leadership, as leaders must demonstrate fairness, honesty, and other-orientedness. They must prioritise the well-being of their team members and make decisions that align with their values. BEST MOMENTS "The most successful organisations really go back and capture that old leadership truth from Christ, from Marcus Aurelius, from the servanthood model that revolutionised the Western world." "You'll never be a better leader than you are a person." "The truism, you will never be a better leader than you are a person, is a long-term truism." "Leadership is turning the bowl upside down. Rob shares his insights on various aspects of learning and personal growth, beginning by discussing the importance of facing fears and making decisions that can lead to personal evolution and achieving one's goals, using the example of Muhammad Ali overcoming his fear of flying. Rob also emphasises the need to focus on self-improvement rather than comparing oneself to others, highlighting the importance of measuring progress against one's own past achievements. KEY TAKEAWAYS Your infinite potential lies on the other side of a decision: Making decisions, even small ones, that make you scared can lead to personal growth and progress towards your goals. Focus on comparing yourself to your past self: Instead of comparing yourself to others, focus on your own progress and improvement. Compare yourself to who you were yesterday and strive to make small, incremental changes. Let go of criticism and complaints: Instead of getting caught up in criticizing and complaining about others, focus on what you can control and move forward. Accept that people will let you down and focus on your own actions and progress. Persistence and determination are key: Find meaning in what you are doing and stay committed to your goals. Understand that challenges and tough times are part of the journey, but having a sense of purpose and meaning will help you push through. BEST MOMENTS "Your infinite potential lies on the other side of a decision." "Focus on me yesterday versus me today. Have I improved? Have I made a micro change?" "Live one day at a time and do what you can on that day." "Find meaning in your life. It doesn't have to be sexy or known by others, it's about you and your gut." "Beware of pride and adopt humility. She discusses her journey from working in the computer industry to discovering her passion for human potential and personal growth. Catherine also delves into the principles of humanistic psychology, emphasising the importance of starting from the present and fostering a cooperative relationship with clients. KEY TAKEAWAYS Catherine's upbringing in a unique and unconventional family environment shaped her perspective on human potential and personal growth from an early age. Catherine's journey towards her current work in humanistic psychology and personal transformation was not a linear path, but rather a series of intuitive decisions and experiences that led her to where she is today. Humanistic psychology, as practiced by Catherine, focuses on starting from the present and empowering individuals to discover their own desires and potential for growth, rather than dwelling on the past or imposing external solutions. The quality of the relationship between the practitioner and the client is highly valued in humanistic psychology, with a strong emphasis on mutual respect and collaboration. "I felt I was very much encouraged to think for myself, ask questions, but also to be responsible for myself." Rob delves into the philosophy and insights of Marcelo Bielsa, a renowned Argentinian football coach. Drawing inspiration from an article titled "The Ten Commandments of the Football Professor, Marcelo Bielsa," Rob explores Bielsa's unique approach to talent development and the future evolution of the game. KEY TAKEAWAYS The development of young players in football requires a meticulous and structured approach over a 10-year period, focusing on teaching them how to solve problems under pressure. The spaces in which to play football are becoming increasingly limited, so players need to learn how to play successfully in tighter spaces with less time and room. Passing is emphasized as a solution to many problems in the game, with an emphasis on angled passes that allow players to receive the ball without their back to goal, thus maintaining the speed of play. The use of the "third man" is highlighted as a tactic to break lines and create space, where players pass the ball to a free teammate who can then play it forward to the intended target. BEST MOMENTS "Without the right genetic composition, there are no big players. Natural education is the best of them all. This allows players to find answers to the questions they are asked during the football game." "Passing is a solution for a huge number of problems. The absolute necessity for the quality of pass that doesn't bounce." "A good pass does not bounce. It shaves the ground." "Everything starts with talent. Talent provides an answer that nobody else comes up with." "Authenticity is the indispensable quality of a coach. Our primary challenge is convincing others of our belief and our conviction." - This quote emphasizes the importance of being true to oneself as a coach and having the ability to inspire and convince others of your coaching philosophy. Rob discusses the importance of dreams and goals in our lives, and how we, as human beings, are naturally driven to achieve certain things and that having goals gives our lives meaning. It's a reminder to chase our dreams and goals, as time is limited and it is never too late to start working towards them. KEY TAKEAWAYS We are goal-oriented mechanisms: As human beings, we are driven to achieve certain things in life, whether it's career goals, family goals, or personal goals. Understanding this can help us stay focused and motivated. Avoid complaining and majoring on the minors: It's easy to get caught up in complaining about small, insignificant things. Instead, focus on what is truly important in your life and avoid wasting energy on minor irritations. Have a dream board or visual representation of your goals: Creating a visual representation of your dreams and goals can help give your life meaning and perspective. It can serve as a reminder of what is truly important to you and help you stay focused on your journey. Life is a constant series of questions: Life is a journey of continuous learning and growth. Always be curious and ask questions to discover new answers and insights. Don't be afraid to try new things and experiment in order to find what works best for you. If we fill our lives with too much in the way of tasks or distractions, we are in danger of losing sight of what's truly important about living. In this episode, Rob explores this concept, and talks about how we can make the best use of the time we have. KEY TAKEAWAYS Life is an eternal balance. We must acknowledge where we pay our true respects, and look at the places we look to for our learnings. As life goes on, the decisions we make become more impactful the older we get. As the sands of time run out, we endeavour to make each moment more valuable. We need to ask ourselves, at the end of each day, whether or not we became slightly better that day. Look for small incremental changes, instead of chasms of change. It's okay not be the best, the most talented. The true success in life is not giving up - endeavouring, carrying on, being persistent. BEST MOMENTS 'It's so easy to be too busy - too busy doing stuff' 'We are human beings, not human doings' 'Paying due diligence to what is important in life, are real key things' 'It's beautiful when the fruit of a labour comes into being' VALUABLE RESOURCES Leader Manager Coach Podcast ABOUT THE HOST Rob Ryles is a UEFA A licensed coach with a League Managers Association qualification and a science and medicine background. Emperor Marcus Aurelius was at the epitome of world power during his reign at the head of Rome, and one of the foremost proponents of the stoic philosophy teachings. In this episode, Rob dives into the world of his thinking, including the thoughts and meditations that have seen him renowned as one of history's greatest minds. KEY TAKEAWAYS Marcus Aurelius became emperor of Rome at the age of 40, and in doing so became the most powerful man in the world. He was a trained soldier and had a peaceful outlook. Living externally is fulfilling, but the life internally is what really matters. It's not about what other people think of us, it's about how we feel about things inside and what we know about ourselves. Change is the order of the universe. We must adapt and learn to deal with it. Be comfortable with it. When we face personal challenge, we must solve them as quickly as possible instead of letting things fester and become bigger issues. BEST MOMENTS 'Marcus Aurelius is arguably the most famous of the stoic philosophers' 'We all need to take a perspective on life' 'It's what's going on internally that really matters' 'Know thyself' VALUABLE RESOURCES Leader Manager Coach Podcast ABOUT THE HOST Rob Ryles is a UEFA A licensed coach with a League Managers Association qualification and a science and medicine background. KEY TAKEAWAYS We are sometimes drawn to the world of football, but it can take time to realise that playing the game isn't always necessary. There are many different pursuits that sit inside the game itself. We don't always have the perspective needed when we're young. it can be hard to keep our focus and look to the future. Finding our niche as a child is difficult. It takes dedication to get to the top, and also a great deal of hard work. You can love a subject, but fail to succeed because you don't want to put in the hard yards. Never be afraid to change your course if your instincts are telling you to follow a different path. Your instincts are always trying to guide you towards something better. BEST MOMENTS 'I've always been interested in football in particular' 'The onus is on the individual to use it or lose it' 'You don't get anywhere without inspiration, desire and hard work' 'I never really viewed this as work' VALUABLE RESOURCES Leader Manager Coach Podcast ABOUT THE GUEST Mark Leather qualified as a physiotherapist in 1983 where he spent 4 years in the NHS before moving into professional football. Since its publication in 1952, Ernest Hemingway's timeless novella, 'The Old Man And The Sea' has enchanted readers with its prose and plot. But as Rob discusses in this week's show, there may be far more to the classic book than we realise... KEY TAKEAWAYS Books allow us a world of perspectives without our having to leave our homes. They are a gift to our souls and conscious minds. The story concerns a fisherman approaching the close of his life, the struggles he faces and how he overcomes the challenges ahead. The small wins we give to people are often the ones that count the most. They are all examples of sustaining love. As part of communities we should encourage the care and love of each other. By dealing with the small challenges around us, the goodness will spread and the world will be a better place for it. BEST MOMENTS 'You can live a thousand lifetimes in one if you read enough books' 'There are some great leadership, management and coaching principals in this book' 'He keeps faith and manages to catch the biggest fish of his life' 'if we all, as individuals, attend to the loving needs in front of us now, then the world will look after itself' VALUABLE RESOURCES Leader Manager Coach Podcast ABOUT THE HOST Rob Ryles is a UEFA A licensed coach with a League Managers Association qualification and a science and medicine background. Rob explores the work of philosopher Epictetus, a former slave who was freed, and who went on to study great wisdom, teaching others about the best way to live. KEY TAKEAWAYS In his teachings Epictetus followed the early rather than the late Stoics, reverting to Socrates and to Diogenes, the philosopher of Cynicism, as historical models of the sage. Each human being is primarily a citizen of his own commonwealth, but he is also a member of the great city of gods and men. It matters not what endeavour we're engaged in, small or large, people face the same issues that they face now - hunger, fear, trepidation, worry, war, agony, death, arguments, criticisms, treachery, criminality, being let down. These human conditions are timeless. We build our characters upon truth, which in itself requires thought. We also must build upon virtue, whatever we consider that to be. BEST MOMENTS 'Epictetus is one of the key philosophers' 'In reality, human life has changed very little' 'One thing can be the key piece in the jigsaw puzzle for you' 'You should build character on truth' VALUABLE RESOURCES Leader Manager Coach Podcast ABOUT THE HOST Rob Ryles is a UEFA A licensed coach with a League Managers Association qualification and a science and medicine background. After being inspired by words of wisdom from Jordan Peterson, Rob takes a further deep dive into the heroic journey, and how it affects us as human beings on a fundamental level. KEY TAKEAWAYS We are all on our own hero's journey, whether we are conscious of it or not. By being alive, by definition, our journey has already begun. Human beings are born unsettled. We are constantly searching for our place in the world, which moves on regardless of our conscious attachment to it. in order to make any gain in life, we are required to suffer. We get to choose these sufferings, big or small, but the wins are undeniable. If we fail to answer the call of our souls, we will suffer a form of psychological illness. If we heed the call, we will suffer and spend time in solitude in order to consolidate and survive. BEST MOMENTS 'By definition of being alive we are automatically involved in it' 'We are eternally unsettled' 'There is somewhere we need to be' 'Pick up your cross and choose which way to suffer' VALUABLE RESOURCES Leader Manager Coach Podcast ABOUT THE HOST Rob Ryles is a UEFA A licensed coach with a League Managers Association qualification and a science and medicine background. Lindsay Leighton is a prime example of someone who could well look at the world and proclaim themselves a victim, but who has instead stared down adversity and become one of the most inspirational human beings alive. Join Rob as he talks to Lindsay about what it really means to overcome hardship and face down challenges, and the invaluable, empowering lessons we can take from this remarkable man's story. KEY TAKEAWAYS Never let any barrier keep you from dreaming big and striving to achieve the dreams of your mind. Nothing can ever stop you if you're willing enough. Victory isn't always about who crosses the line first - it's about who you cross the line with. The best way to deal with failure is to laugh it off and try again. There's no sense in feeling bitter when you can pick yourself up and try again. The legacies we create in life can stretch on through generations. if we're strong enough to teach people resilience and fortitude, then those qualities can transfer through time. In our quest to become better leaders and thinkers, we must study the work of other great minds. With this in mind, Rob presents a summary of the wisest lessons from Jordan Peterson's ground-breaking book, Maps Of Meaning. KEY TAKEAWAYS There is so much that we understand as logical and autonomous, but is actually driven by forces that we can not comprehend. Pay attention is a profound statement. It encapsulates the concept of attention and people's time being worth something. The truth is the goal at the end of all great journeys. It's the reason why scientists devote their lives to the journeys they undertake. If you can embrace the fact that there is something bigger than us out there, then it relieves the very pressure of existence. In this episode, Rob talks about the power behind living our day-to-day life in a rhythm and how this can be the building blocks to not just a successful life but a fulfilled and happy one too. KEY TAKEAWAYS The definition of a leader is someone who does what they say they will do! Peregrination is a word that alludes to journey, this word reminded Rob that it's the things you are interested in that are beckoning you. The things that interest you can be a threat or a promise and you get to decide which it is. Be aware of black-and-white thinking, Rob's own simplistic views of the world he recognised were no longer going to work, the world is far too complex. Life is hard, achieving is hard so stop looking for perfection. Just win the next battle you have to face, start the day and take care of the basics every day and the rest will flow. It's the little tasks we get right every day that build to the bigger things. Living in rhythm is the start of success, BEST MOMENTS ‘Listen to that little small voice, that little bit of interest that beckons you and whispers and makes you interested' ‘Be vulnerable and see what happens' ‘Life is suffering, getting to the top, your top, is hard' ‘Your life is your life, perfection and your life won't go together' VALUABLE RESOURCES Leader Manager Coach Podcast ABOUT THE HOST Rob Ryles is a UEFA A licensed coach with a League Managers Association qualification and a science and medicine background. Rob examines the surprising, yet still empowering lessons that we can take from the world of health care, caregiving, and particularly those suffering from Alzheimer's Disease. KEY TAKEAWAYS Those suffering from dementia is unable to deal with information in the way that they were used to doing. Never argue. It's futile, will not end with a positive outcome, and always leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Consider that those in your care may not always be able to fulfil what you're asking them to do. Never shame them in this instance as shame is never a positive outcome. Keith Hackett is largely recognised as one of the greatest referees in the history of football, having overseen such famous games as the 1981 FA Cup Final between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City and the the now legendary league encounter between Mn Utd and Arsenal that resulted in a twenty-one man brawl. Keith is still out there and still active, and he joins Rob this week for an incredible retrospective across his entire career - the highs and lows - and the invaluable life lessons he's taken from the beautiful game across a lifetime of devotion. KEY TAKEAWAYS The work ethic required in order to be one of the greats, is something that isn't always evident in today's world. In Keith's generation, you had to fight for what you wanted, and the results lasted a lifetime. Refereeing isn't just about applying the laws of the game, You're managing an event. You are the man overseeing a spectacle and making sure it works. A fundamental requirement of being a good referee is to win the players over and not work against them, but alongside them, in creating a football match that lives in the memory. Referees don't want to take away from a game. They only really ever come into focus when the game demands it. This is why professionals were established. BEST MOMENTS 'It's amazing when you look back, 1960 when I started refereeing' 'You see the build-up, you see the players, you see the nervousness' 'You're like the conductor of an orchestra' 'In my day there was an affinity with the player' VALUABLE RESOURCES Leader Manager Coach Podcast ABOUT THE GUEST Keith is a famous English former football referee who began refereeing in local leagues in the Sheffield area. He is counted amongst the top 100 referees of all time. He became a referee on what was known as the full List at the age of only thirty two. He has refereed a plethora of famous games including The 1981 FA Cup Final between Spurs and Manchester City aged only thirty six as well as the 1990–91 infamous league encounter between Manchester United and Arsenal, notorious for the twenty one man brawl. He was one of the first set Premier League referees for its inaugural campaign before retiring from first class refereeing just short of his 50th birthday. Rob further explores the concept of the hero's journey, including why we experience an innate desire to achieve goals in general, and the benefit of conceiving our lives as a philosophical journey. KEY TAKEAWAYS To be able to combine, amalgamate and align what we do with a philosophy that we believe in is ultimately empowering. Human beings are fundamentally built as goal-oriented creatures, and naturally look for purpose in all tasks, no matter what area of life is being considered. We cannot be held hostage by our conscious mind, which can often use fear as a way of holding us back. We cannot stop moving forwards because of irrational fears that something bad may happen if we do. Rob discusses transformation and transcendence, and how each moment can add to the complexities of our psychological make up in ways we sometimes do not comprehend. KEY TAKEAWAYS Life is a constant state of transformation. We re never the same as we were the day before. We are a constantly evolving species. If we accept that we are the sum total of our thoughts and actions, then we come to realise that everything matters, no mater how small or seemingly insignificant at the time. If you do something for yourself, it will die with you. If you do something for somebody else, it carries on into eternity. Rob discusses some talking points from Terry Mac's groundbreaking autobiography, 'Living For The Moment', including the value of perseverance, why your upbringing should never hold you back, and how you can use the pain of tragedy to push you higher. KEY TAKEAWAYS No matter where you're from, never let the place you originate from hold you back from dreaming big and realising your ambitions. Perseverance is the factor that pushes the great ones that little bit farther ahead in the race towards success. If you are blighted by tragedy, then use that pain to spur you on to bigger things. Face up to what's hurting you and deal with it in your own way. Make every day count. Each moment of your life is precious. You have to recognise that life is a one way trip, so don't waste a second. BEST MOMENTS 'It's a stimulation of your own journey' 'Don't let your upbringing determine the outcome of your life' 'You've got to be determined. Rob is joined by data literacy advocate and best-selling author, Kevin Hanegan, to discuss the vital role that data plays in our modern society, how we can use it to our benefit by focussing purely on what's important, and how factors such as AI and marketing may have a profound effect upon the way we live. KEY TAKEAWAYS Only by setting ourselves effective goals can we create the best objectives. When we have our mission solidified, we are able to ask the right questions to get us there. The world is filled with information - some useful, some not so much. The key is to hone in only on what is of value, and what we need. There will never be a substitute for humanity or the connection we feel to other humans. AI and farmed data will never truly be able to replicate this relationship. It's not enough to simply have the data in front of us. We need to diversify the way we conceptualise and read the data by utilising the many varied skill sets and talents of a diverse group of thinkers. BEST MOMENTS 'Whether its in our personal life or work, we're all exposed to news and information. Whether we know it or not our brains are getting tired of seeing it all' 'One thing we're not short of in the world today is information' 'It's the human element that's important' 'How do you find a treasure without a map?' Rob talks about the impact we can make and the positive benefits we can reap and sow, when we involve ourselves in life, instead of seeing the world as something in our orbit. KEY TAKEAWAYS When we are born, we are little more than a vulnerable collection of cells, reliant upon the care and nurturing of another person. Our next stage is to form self-reliance. This next phase of self-reliance is the one that shapes the way we interact with the world afterwards. We must remember that we are part of the world around us. Never be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Relying on others is as much a part of life as helping them to achieve. When we utilise and leverage the strengths of others, we empower ourselves beyond measure. It is the key to true resilience. BEST MOMENTS 'Life involves us. It does not revolve around us' 'Ultimately, if you act as if the world revolves around you, you are going to come unstuck' 'Pride is such a malevolent thing at times' 'It's not a sign of weakness - it's a sign of strength' VALUABLE RESOURCES Leader Manager Coach Podcast ABOUT THE HOST Rob Ryles is a UEFA A licensed coach with a League Managers Association qualification and a science and medicine background. Many use the word "citizenship", but what does it truly mean? In this edition of the show, Rob talks about its definition, and how we can make better use of our own citizenship in order to effect positive impact in the world. KEY TAKEAWAYS Being a citizen means that you are part of your environment, not simply a consumer of it. It means that you become a part of the beating heart of your surroundings. A city is something that has evolved from nothing due to the efforts of the people who have nurtured it and put effort into making it a place. Those who stand out in any kind of environment are the ones who go that extra mile - who do more than is required. Being a citizen gives you the right o have your say. if you're someone who creates a net-negative effect, then what right do you have to steer any conversation? BEST MOMENTS 'A city is a body. it has a heart. It has infrastructure' 'Be a citizen, not a consumer' 'Everything you do will come back to you, multiplied' 'If you want to raise yourself up, the best way is to increase your contribution' VALUABLE RESOURCES Leader Manager Coach Podcast ABOUT THE HOST Rob Ryles is a UEFA A licensed coach with a League Managers Association qualification and a science and medicine background. What do we do when chaos and entropy arise to challenge us on life's journey? In this week's episode, Rob talks about the practical ways in which we can view chaos and turn it into some form of order. KEY TAKEAWAYS If you are entering into any situation, we have the opportunity to look at it from all angles and make sure it is wise for us to proceed. Entropy means random chaos. Entropy is the force that throw up challenges. It's how we meet them that matters. In life, one way of looking at the journey ahead is to make sure that we create order from chaos. This is essentially our task as living beings. When we head out into the world to achieve something, we are opening ourselves up to chaos. We need to accept that. BEST MOMENTS 'I am fascinated by journeys' 'How often do you question yourself?' 'Doubts are traitors' 'Nature will have its way' VALUABLE RESOURCES Leader Manager Coach Podcast ABOUT THE HOST Rob Ryles is a UEFA A licensed coach with a League Managers Association qualification and a science and medicine background. Jacqueline Wales is a speaker, transformational coach, and the author of 'The Fearless Factor', an essential guide to helping you live a happier, more fulfilled life. Jacqueline joins Rob to discuss her book, the truth about the nature of fear, and how we can surmount it in order to overcome challenges and become the best version of ourselves. KEY TAKEAWAYS Fear is nothing to do with reality, and has everything to do with the narrative you personally create in your life. Words of wisdom always mean more when they come from the mouths of those who have walked the path before us. Belief systems built in the past by others are often implemented as ways to live, but each of our stories in the world is unique. We need to find our own path. It doesn't take years or generations to change, Change can happen instantly if we are truly honest with ourselves. BEST MOMENTS 'Fear is the stories that you tell yourself' 'People aren't thinking about you because they're too busy thinking about themselves' 'Those are the questions that really get people to confront the truth about who they are' 'The lack of truth about self is based on the belief system we've built' VALUABLE RESOURCES Leader Manager Coach Podcast ABOUT THE GUEST Jacqueline is a renowned speaker, author and transformational coach. Rob discusses progressing your career, and the route through which you can work your way towards the job of your dreams, and why every step along the way is a chance to become a better version of yourself. KEY TAKEAWAYS With every step we take in our professional lives, we are honing our skills and progressing towards a broader skill set. Nobody will simply hand you your dream profession - you have to earn it. Dedication is the first tool you must master on your road towards success. Never be afraid to let the world know who you are and what you're capable of. The world at large is unaware of you until you change that. Always have a North Star that you're heading towards. You can't begin your journey unless you know where you're going. Taking inspiration from JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, Rob discusses why rock bottom doesn't necessarily have to be a defeat, but can instead be reframed as a starting point for the rest of your life. KEY TAKEAWAYS We are all going to face distinct adversity in life, and it can come in any type of form. What matters is the way we look at it, and the way we look for solutions to surmount it. If you build your life on a robust set of values, then no obstacle in the world can derail your path to success. It's all a matter of seeing adversity as a potential lesson. If you're feeling stuck then just start. Just do it. If you're moving then you will build forward momentum. It's easier to move a moving body than something at rest. Rob discusses vulnerability, and why letting others know that you are not invincible is actually a form of strength and inspiration. KEY TAKEAWAYS There is nothing wrong with being human, and that means admitting weakness. Those who pretend to be invulnerable are harder to relate to. We're often conditioned to hide pain and to show strength and resilience at all times. If we live this way then we are living a lie. Life is not about wall-to-wall happiness. You shouldn't be seeking happiness in every moment. Growth comes through pain, and happiness is the reward when it happens. BEST MOMENTS 'It is okay to be vulnerable. It is okay to be human' 'Feeling like you want to quit is all part of human life' 'It will stop you being frustrated all the time. Rob welcomes to the show, Blaine McKenna, a UEFA A License coach, and author of ‘Coaching Abroad. How Eight Coaches Got Jobs and Succeeded Worldwide'. Rob and Blaine discuss his life as a coach, the inherent value of courage, why you need to face down your fears, and the importance of experiencing the world's cultures as they are, instead of expecting the world to revolve around you. KEY TAKEAWAYS There is no substitute for courage when it comes to following your dream. Summon up the inner strength to visualise your goals, and have the courage to push yourself towards them. You have to face down your fears and realise that the journey towards success is never a free ride. You have to put in the time and pay for your results with effort. It isn't always about qualifications. they're sometimes necessary, but generally are projected upon us by organisations as a quick way of ascertaining competence. Journeys of discovery and growth allow us to truly find ourselves, and the place in the world that we belong. BEST MOMENTS 'I realised that this was a real career. Rob reflects upon a practical reminder from his own experience - how to face down your biggest fears and how to take lessons and positives from even the most difficult challenges. KEY TAKEAWAYS Our inner voice naturally steers us away from challenge. This is a survival instinct. But the best results come from straying into this area. Things that aren't easy often provide the biggest lessons to ourselves. In terms of development, we grow more when we are challenged more. We need to face our fears. The more we do it, the more we realise that the things that defeat us are easily conquerable.
