In 2020, the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference featured a panel entitled, "Soccer Analytics: The Beautiful Game Meets the Analytics Edge." While the broader sporting public was acknowledging that soccer analytics had finally hit the mainstream, it had been evolving for decades. Starting with the work of Charles Reep, who is largely credited as being the first person to capture soccer match data en masse then analyze it, soccer analytics truly accelerated in the 2000s. A combination of American influence co-mingled with application globally pushed the practice forward. Thanks to the "Moneyball" phenomenon, conferences like Sloan, enterprising data scientists and opportunistic entrepreneurs, soccer analytics began to forge an influential path with English clubs like Arsenal and Liverpool Lucy Rushton broke into the soccer world in that environment. After working for her hometown club, Reading FC and then later Watford FC, Rushton moved to the US to take on a lead analytics role for Atlanta United in Major League Soccer. She was later hired as the General Manager of DC United and then also of Bay FC in the National Women's Soccer League. Rushton joined the show to talk about her journey and the evolution of soccer analytics over the last few decades. Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso from the SDH Network, brought to you by Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse. Anders Dreyer was named the MLS Player of the Matchday yesterday after his brace in San Diego's impressive win over the LA Galaxy. Atlanta United's Latte Lath was named to the Team of the Matchday alongside Dreyer. MLS clubs are finding cash in Brazil with a number of recent transfers. Santiago Rodriguez (NYC) and Micael (Houston) are the latest to go, Rodriguez for a reported $15M and Micael for a Houston-record $6M. The market in Brazil is strong right now, and after Botafogo's success with MLS recruits helping them win the Copa Libertadores, this will only happen more often. Canadian international Adrianna Leon is back in the NWSL with the San Diego Wave after leaving West Ham. Jose Mourinho is in the headlines again after his post-match comments following his Fenerbahce side drew 0-0 with Galatasaray. He once again had derogatory statements about Turkish referees, even though the center ref in this match was brought in from Slovenia. Asked about a challenge early in the match, he said a Turkish referee would have reacted with a yellow card “after the big dive and their bench jumping around like monkeys.” Galatasaray said they would initiate criminal proceedings and file complaints with UEFA & FIFA over the "racist statements". Robert Platek, with links to Dell Technologies, is the latest to be linked with buying Reading FC. He recently sold Spezia in Italy and previously tried to buy Sunderland. Big games today include the Copa del Rey semifinal between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, Copa Libertadores preliminary round second leg with Boca Juniors hosting Alianza Lima, Concacaf Champions Cup as Miami hosts Kansas City and LAFC hosts Colorado in second legs.

Joining Jill and Doron on our 23rd episode, the fifth of our second season, to tell us his story is our first Belgian guest, Alain Jeger. Alain grew up in Antwerp, and prior to Carmel, went to the renowned Tachkemoni school. After Carmel, he studied at the European Business School in London. For the past 15 years he has been the Managing Director of an Environmental Safety group that offers enterprise clients testing, inspection and control services. He lives in Brussels, and is the father of two daughters, aged 32 and 28. Hear Alain talk about his boozy encounter with a tzadik, becoming ‘Head of Detention', getting in his 10,000 steps-a-day Carmel style, whom he surprisingly plied with gefilte fish, making ‘apple pies', and nocturnal outings to Oxford. Thank you, Alain Jeger, for turning us again to Carmel days! Dedication: at Alain's request, this episode is dedicated to the memory of David Jones, the coach of the Carmel College First XI football team and an English teacher. Many of us will also fondly remember Jones as the Mongewell Housemaster. He was originally from Wales, fought in the Korean War when he was called up for National Service, and played league football professionally as a goalkeeper for Reading FC. He lived out his years in a care home, and sadly passed away in 2022 at the age of 90. Personal mentions in this episode: Rabbi Jeremy Rosen (Headmaster) Vera Rosen (Housemistress) Gordon Nickerson (EFL & Mongewell Housemaster) Martin Edmonds (French) Allan Hodge (Politics & Economics) Isabel Craston (English & EFL) Rony Greenberg (Jewish Studies) Moshe Miller (Jewish Studies) Joel Silver (Computer Sciences & Ridgeway Housemaster) David Jones (Football coach & Mongewell Housemaster) Maurice Zollman Serge Beller Danny Rubens Edmond Perkal Aby Sassoon Aby Rubinstein Orly Marx Koppel Leila Djemal Tina Bernstein Robin Rahimian Jeremy Solomon Andrew Sonning Marcus Flacks Jack Mizel Danny Shiraz Jonas Cygielman Aslan Boz Jonathan Stern Michele Menton Feel free to leave a comment letting us know what you liked about this episode, and rate us on your favorite podcast platform

Welcome back to Squad Depth with Theo Lloyd-Hughes. This week, it's all about the NWSL moment. And more specifically the struggling Utah Royals. Theo sat down with Kelly Cousins, the general manager of the 2024 expansion club, to get a better idea of what is going on behind the scenes in Salt Lake City. After 10 matches, the Royals are bottom of the NWSL table with only one win. Over the past couple of months, the team has also lost two assistant coaches. Head coach Amy Rodriguez is learning a lot in her first-ever season as a head coach even if it is coming the hard way. Having spent a decade as a head coach in the English Women's leagues with Reading FC, Cousins gives insight into how she evaluates and guides Rodriguez through this difficult debut year. We look to answer questions about what are the Royals' targets and growth points for this season. How are they trying to improve? Every market has a top, middle and bottom. The Premier League is among a small global elite of sports rights holders which is doing just fine, thank you. Billions of dollars in media revenue chases must-see content. But even within the league, different business models apply. The elite 'top four, or six' are chasing European football, and with it an additional pot of TV money flowing from UEFA competitions. Then there's the rest. The clubs that exist outside that bubble, for whom life is harder, struggling to perform on the pitch on reduced budgets, while fighting off the cataclysmic economic shock that is relegation to the Championship. This is the Premier League's version of the squeezed middle, between the top six and the EFL.This podcast looks at the commercial options open to those clubs, with our guest Charlie Boss, Chief Commercial Officer of Southampton Football Club, which was relegated from the Premier League last season.Charlie joins Squeezed Middle regular Ben Wells, CEO of PTI Digital, the strategy and technology consultancy, who previously held senior commercial roles at Chelsea FC, Reading FC and Bath Rugby.See here for previous episodes of The Squeezed Middle. This podcast is sponsored by Leaders Week London.Who could you be joining at Twickenham Stadium on October 18th and 19th?Across the Summit, over 1,800 of the most senior figures in the sport business will be there, from Amazon to the Premier League, adidas to Spotify. This is your opportunity to meet and rub-shoulders with executives from across the sport business ecosystem, to reconnect with old friends and reminisce about your past experiences from Leaders Weeks gone by. Born in England, Peter Woodbridge left school at age 15 and began work as a booking clerk for British Rail, where he developed a love for steam engines. Continuing his studies through night school, Peter won two scholarships that led him to a B. Sc. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Reading, followed by an M. Sc. in Business Administration from the University of Bradford. Peter began his professional career as an agricultural industries analyst, ultimately providing policy and planning advice to senior levels of industry and government in North America, Asia and Europe. This took him to far-flung locations including tea estates in Uganda, cotton plantations in Ethiopia and tropical hardwood forests in the South Pacific—eventually settling in Canada, where his consulting practice produced numerous leading-edge strategic analyses for the global forest products industry. Now retired from his consulting practice, Peter has returned to his first love—writing. The Girl From Barcelona is his first published novel of a fully fledged trilogy that he has released. Outside of writing, Peter loves hiking in the mountains of British Columbia and Arizona, the relaxed lifestyle in Barcelona and travelling. Peter played rugby throughout his school days, later representing his university, eventually lapsing into social rugby in adult recreation leagues until his body begged him to stop. An avid fan of English and European football, he sinks into abject misery every time his beloved Reading FC is beaten by lesser teams… which is often. It drives him back to writing.
