Former policeman Ronald Cornish talks about his time as a police peacekeeper with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). Sixty years ago, Australia sent its first contingent of police to UNFICYP, to undertake monitoring duties of Greek Cypriot police. His first appearance on another podcast, which the hosts Sara & Roger were kind enough to share the recording for us to publish on our podcast too.
In today's episode, the first humanitarian aid packages for Gaza will arrive in Cyprus on Wednesday and will be sent to the besieged strip within days, the government said on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Energy Minister George Papanastasiou conceded that Cyprus cannot become an energy hub in the eastern Mediterranean, as it lacks the necessary infrastructures. Elsewhere, “all is calm” in the buffer zone around the Ayios Dhometios area, Unficyp spokesman Aleem Siddique said, after alleged Turkish Cypriot incursions in the area on Monday. All this and more in the Cyprus Beat briefing brought to you by the Cyprus Mail.
Amid mounting complaints over the cost of living, the government on Thursday said it may bring back electricity and fuel tax subsidies in the near future. Speaking to public broadcaster CyBC, Finance Minister Makis Keravnos did not rule out reinstating subsidies on electricity bills or the lower VAT rate on motor and heating fuel. Elsewhere, Unficyp said they have no intention of abandoning the Ledra Palace hotel, and that no official request has been filed by majority stakeholder – the church – despite Archbishop Georgios raising the issue with President Nikos Christodoulides. Meanwhile, organisers of a kolokasi tasting evening on Friday are hoping to bring this love-it-or-hate-it vegetable new fans by pairing it with raspberries and making kolokasi cocktails.

I met George Michaelides when I came to Cyprus over 40 years ago for the first time as a very young tour guide. He was a professional and I was in awe of all he knew. Today he is one of the legends of Cyprus tourism and it is always a pleasure to talk to him.He was born in the occupied town of Famagusta and played volleyball with Paul Newman when the movie “Exodus” was made there at the beginning of the sixties. In this episode he also tells me which celebrities really were in Famagusta and which stories are a myth and yes, Fifty years ago a Famagusta hotel gave free board and lodging to four Swedes to entertain Unficyp soldiers. Neither the singers nor the audience had any idea what the future had in store. The Swedish pop group Abba's official main web page opens with the words, “It began 50 years ago in Sweden”. Well, yes and no. It kind of, sort of, actually began in Cyprus. After 14 years at the Cyprus Tourism Organization as Chief Tourist Officer (Head of Marketing and PR) and 16 years at the Louis Group as Senior General Manager Marketing George Chr. Michaelides has set up as of January 2007 his own consultancy company. A pioneer in the fields of conference and incentive travel as well as in marketing of cruises George Michaelides provides professional expertise in tourism marketing with emphasis on special interest tourism. He is on the board of the Cyprus Travel Writers & Journalists Society
In today's episode, the Audit service and the Attorney-general engaged in a war of words after the latter accused the former of lying about a European Commission communiqué that sided with Auditor-general Oydsseas Michaelides on the finance ministry's decision, which awarded no-bid contracts connected to the Hermes airport concession agreement. In other news, forty-seven areas on the island are still classified as dangerous due to landmines or other active remnants of war such as unexploded artillery shells, bombs and grenades, data reported on the Unficyp website reveals. Meanwhile, the press and information office launched a five-year campaign titled ‘Journalists Matter' starting with a discussion on how protecting journalists is paramount to protecting democracy. All this and more in the Cyprus Beat briefing brought to you by the Cyprus Mail.

The UN Security Council just renewed the mandate for UNFICYP – the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus - for another year instead of for six months. All these and more in your Daily News Briefing, brought to you by the Cyprus Mail.
Earlier this week Turkey announced that its newest drill ship would set sail August 9th for a drilling operation “in the Mediterranean,” setting the stage for an escalation of tensions should the ship deploy to an area that falls within Greece or Cyprus's EEZs. The announcement comes as Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu also upped the ante with Athens again this week, issuing a barrage of heated rhetoric against Greece. Despite the harsh and provocative rhetoric coming out of Ankara and the threat of tensions in the Mediterranean next month, Greece and Cyprus are working to keep tensions low. Endy Zemenides, HALC's Executive Director, joins Thanos Davelis to look at Turkey's increasingly revisionist and aggressive stance vis-a-vis Greece and Cyprus and what steps can be taken to make it clear that Ankara's actions are unacceptable.Read Endy Zemenides' latest interview with The Greek Reporter here: Friend or Foe?

Turkey's President Erdogan is planning to visit the occupied northern part of Cyprus on July 20th, the anniversary of Turkey's invasion of Cyprus in 1974, where events are expected to focus on the fenced-off town of Varosha. Turkey is planning major infrastructure developments in occupied Varosha, which is in direct contravention of multiple UN Security Council resolutions. The UN Secretary General has stated his concern over Turkish activity in Varosha, while the EU has also stepped up pressure over the issue. The US administration has also been in touch with Nicosia over these developments, and both the US House of Representatives and the Senate are raising the issue with the administration. We spoke to Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides on Sunday night about Turkey's provocative steps in Varosha, the diplomatic steps Cyprus is taking in response, and the need for the international community - including the EU and US - to put pressure on Turkey. You can read the articles we discuss on our podcast here: UNSG recommends renewal of UNFICYP's mandate, expresses concern over developments in VaroshaAthens' moves towards EastMed pipelineAnkara renews East Med escalationGreece navigating uncharted waters PM to announce vaccination decision by Tuesday
