The Bouliler brothers are emblematic figures of banditry amidst a backdrop of economic struggle and social change. Hasan Bulli, a Turkish Cypriot from Paphos, became a legendary folk hero in Cyprus in the late 19th century. Often compared to American outlaws like Jesse James, he gained notoriety for his bold actions and was remembered through songs and tales long after his death. His life changed after his love for Emete, his uncle's wife, and a conflict with a fellow outlaw, Hayreddin. After a failed ambush attempt on Hayreddin—who had allegedly harassed Emete—Hasan was framed and sentenced to prison for a crime he denied committing. Hasan was convicted and fled to the mountains, where he spent 18 months as a fugitive. His brothers Kaymakam and Hüseyin also became fugitives after being accused of murder. They formed a gang and operated in the mountains until 1896 where they were ultimately captured and killed.  But who were the Bullis? And how do we separate fact from fiction? Through a balanced lens, Professor Mehmet Demiryürek (Hitit University) examines the reality behind the legends, exploring the socio-economic conditions of the period, the Bouliler's deeds and misdeeds, and their enduring impact on modern Cypriot memory.

A decision earlier this year by authorities in the occupied northern part of Cyprus to allow headscarves in schools has led to mass protests against what many see as President Erdogan's increasing authoritarianism and a creeping Islamification from Ankara. The protests also touch on broader issues, with Turkish Cypriots expressing concerns about money laundering, crime, and a wider Russian and Iranian presence. Nektaria Stamouli, the deputy editor in chief of Kathimerini's English Edition and Politico's Eastern Mediterranean correspondent, joins Thanos Davelis to break down this protest movement and look at what it says about where Turkish Cypriots stand vis-a-vis Erdogan. You can read the articles we discuss on our podcast here:Turkish Cypriots resist creeping IslamificationErdogan says US CAATSA sanctions on Turkey defense sector easing under TrumpGreece takes legal action over drone show advertising Adidas near AcropolisOutrage in Greece after Adidas advert shows drone shoe ‘kicking' Acropolis

Hasan Bulli is a significant figure in the history of Cyprus. A notorious bandit who roamed the island's rural landscape in the late 19th century, he became something of a folk hero--often compared to Jesse James. His daring deeds and the stories surrounding his gang became the stuff of legend in Cypriot folklore. Turkish Cypriot poet Hafız Cemaleddin immortalized them in a poem titled Cyprus Bandit under the British Rule published on June 21, 1896. Next month, join The History of Cyprus Podcast as I welcome Dr. Mehmet Demiryürek to discuss brigands and bandits in 19th-century Cyprus!

This study revisits the historical context and rationale behind Türkiye's 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation, emphasizing its legal and humanitarian justifications under the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee. Contrary to narratives focused solely on military action, the analysis underscores the systematic marginalization and persecution of Turkish Cypriots that necessitated intervention. Drawing on memoirs of key figures like Rauf Denktaş and Glafkos Clerides, the paper explores the collapse of the partnership state, failed diplomatic efforts, and the enduring impact of the Megali Idea ideology. The operation is framed as a response to existential threats and a pivotal moment in Turkish-Greek-Cypriot relations.Link : https://avim.org.tr/en/Analiz/50TH-ANNIVERSARY-OF-THE-CYPRUS-PEACE-OPERATION-WHAT-PROPOSAL-DID-THE-GREEK-SIDE-MAKE-TO-RAUF-DENKTAS-IMMEDIATELY-AFTER-THE-OPERATIONWeb page: https://avim.org.tr/enTelegram Channel:https://t.me/s/avimorgtrTwitter: https://avim.org.tr/enLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/avimorgtr/VKontakte: https://vk.com/public202374482Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcIfEGNM3308QoLbCDJIFuwDailmotion: https://www.dailymotion.com/dm_0ea263f63bb5aee7d8770d1ec13cfe8bInstgram: https://www.instagram.com/avimorgtr/IntroductionIntroduction

On 15 July 1974, the Greek military dictatorship in Athens sponsored a coup on the eastern Mediterranean island of Cyprus, aiming to overthrow its selected president and unite the island with Greece. Days later, Turkey invaded the island, taking a third of it and displacing many thousands of its inhabitants. The writer Bekir Azgun grew up in the village of Potamia, where Greek and Turkish Cypriots had once lived together in harmony. He speaks to Maria Margaronis about the day of the coup and reflects on the gradual separation of the island's two communities, beginning with the Greek Cypriot anticolonial struggle against Britain in the 1950s and culminating in the Turkish invasion and partition. No outside power acted to stop this conflict between two NATO members. Cyprus, strategically positioned near the Middle East, remains divided to this day.Archive by kind permission of the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation.Music by Michalis Terlikkas.(Photo: The new de facto President of Cyprus, Nikos Sampson, holds a press conference after the military coup d'état which deposed Archbishop Makarios. In this episode, we talk about the ghost town of Varosha on the northern coast of Cyprus. Once a bustling tourist hotspot, Varosha was abandoned in 1974 when the Turkish military invaded the island after a coup attempt aimed at uniting Cyprus with Greece. Elina, a proud Cypriot, shares her personal story of fleeing Varosha with her family when she was just four years old, given only five minutes to pack their belongings. I learn about the dramatic events of 1974 that led to Varosha's abandonment and the division of Cyprus.   Elina vividly recalls the knock on the door and the heart-breaking decision her family had to make, leaving everything behind. Varosha's current state, sealed off for over 40 years, is a stark reminder of the island's ongoing conflict. I explore the recent efforts to open parts of Varosha to the public, which have sparked international debates and criticisms.   We also talk about the movie "Smuggling Hendrix," a comedic take on the absurdity of Cyprus's division, is discussed. Elina shares heart-warming stories of her father's efforts to preserve his village and foster unity between Greek and Turkish Cypriots. The episode also touches on the struggles of migrants seeking refuge in Cyprus, highlighting the island's ongoing humanitarian challenges.   LINKS: See the trailer for "Smuggling Hendrix" here: https://youtu.be/9ACqXDktph0?si=kAU-0Lr-HOG9tIPw  Instagram: @walk_talk_cyprus  Facebook: Walk Talk Cyprus  WhatsApp: +35799444531

According to late Ottoman historian, Ronald C. Jennings, little is known “about the places of origins of Black slaves or free blacks in Ottoman Cyprus except that their presence can be documented by the 1590s in the judicial registers from Nicosia” -- as can be heard in this excerpt. Though a very short Primary Source, it is revealing. As was common practice, they assimilated into the Turkish Cypriot community, adopting Turkish names, embracing Islam and integrating themselves into the community. Next month I interview Serap Kanay who speaks about Cyprus' historic Black Cypriot community, its place and its enduring presence. Here is the text in full: “Raziye ibn Murid of Lefkosa made a claim against a black man named Rukan ibn Adbullah. Rukan has taken possession of 25 olive trees. Raziye has no proof of his claim.  Rukan claims to have bought them from Sumbul Aga 8 years prior. Rukan is invited to take an oath which he does. The Lefkosa judicial register, 17th century."
