Piccadilly Un:Plugged is curated by New Public and a part of Art after Dark commissioned by Art of London , an immersive creative journey and ecofeminist experience by Nelly Ben Hayoun- Stépanian across London's West End for Art After Dark on 6th, 7th and 8th March 2025. This installation is in loving memory of Láwû Makuriye'nt (aka EOBIONT, Mango, half of Mirrored fatality) Moonbounce or Earth-Moon-Earth (EME) is a technology that allows sending radio signals from one location to another location on Earth, using the Moon as a natural satellite. It is like DJing with the Moon, the audio signal goes about 3 meter inside the crust of the moon before travelling back to earth picking up the Big Bang static on the way- which gives it this distorted audio, alien and eerie. Included in this playlist: the heartbeats of women in Nelly Ben Hayoun-Stépanian's Armenian family for International Women's Day; recordings from the city's streets and institutions produced by multi-instrumentalist Ayse Hassan (of Savages and Esya); and a series of original tracks from Nelly and the University of the Underground's long term collaborators: Massive Attack, The Avalanches (feat. Blood Orange), Pussy Riot, Mirrored Fatality and Moses Boyd. Additionally. newly produced track in collaboration with the late noise artist EOBIONT (Láwû Makuriye'nt), who tragically passed away this week features the heartbeats of Ben Hayoun-Stépanian's Armenian family. With special thanks to the team at Jodrell Bank Observatory for their support in making this technological feat happen.

On this episode of Crazy Wisdom, Stewart Alsop speaks with pianist and AI innovator Ayse Deniz, who is behind "Classical Regenerated," a tribute project that uses artificial intelligence to bring classical composers back to life. Ayse shares how she trains AI models on historical documents, letters, and research to create interactive experiences where audiences can "speak" with figures like Chopin. The conversation explores the implications of AI in music, education, and human perception, touching on active listening, the evolution of artistic taste, and the philosophical questions surrounding artificial intelligence. You can connect with Ayse's through Instagram or learn more about her work visiting her website at adpianist.com.Check out this GPT we trained on the conversation!Timestamps00:00 Introduction to the Crazy Wisdom Podcast00:17 Exploring the Classical Regenerated Project00:39 AI in Live Concerts and Historical Accuracy02:25 Active Listening and the Impact of Music04:33 Personal Experiences with Classical Music09:46 The Role of AI in Education and Learning16:30 Cultural Differences in Music Education21:33 The Future of AI and Human Interaction30:13 Political Correctness and Its Impact on Society35:23 The Struggles of Music Students36:32 Wisdom Traditions and Tough Love37:28 Cultural Differences in Education39:57 The Role of AI in Music Education42:23 Challenges and Opportunities with AI47:21 The Future of Governance and AI50:11 The Intersection of Technology and Humanity56:05 Creating AI-Enhanced Music Projects01:06:23 Final Thoughts and Future PlansKey InsightsAI is transforming how we engage with classical music – Ayse Deniz's Classical Regenerated project brings historical composers like Chopin back to life using AI models trained on their letters, academic research, and historical documents. By allowing audiences to interact with AI-generated versions of these composers, she not only preserves their legacy but also creates a bridge between the past and the future of music.Active listening is a lost skill that AI can help revive – Modern music consumption often treats music as background noise rather than an art form requiring deep attention. Ayse uses AI-generated compositions alongside original works to challenge audiences to distinguish between them, fostering a more engaged and analytical approach to listening. The nature of artistic interpretation is evolving with AI – Traditionally, human performers interpret classical compositions with emotional nuance, timing, and dynamics. AI-generated performances are now reaching a level where they can mimic these subtleties, raising questions about whether machines can eventually match or even surpass human expressiveness in music.AI's impact on education will depend on how it is designed – Ayse emphasizes that AI should not replace teachers but rather serve as a tool to encourage students to practice more and develop discipline. By creating an AI music tutor for children, she aims to support learning in a way that complements human instruction rather than undermining it.Technology is reshaping the psychology of expertise – With AI capable of outperforming humans in various fields, there is an emerging question of how people will psychologically adapt to always being second-best to machines. The discussion touches on whether AI-generated knowledge and creativity will demotivate human effort or inspire new forms of artistic and intellectual pursuits. The philosophical implications of AI challenge our sense of reality – As AI-generated personas and compositions become more convincing, distinguishing between what is “real” and what is synthetic is becoming increasingly difficult. The episode explores the idea that we may already be living in a kind of simulation, where our perception of reality is constructed and mediated by evolving technologies.AI is accelerating personal empowerment but also risks centralization – Just as personal computing once promised decentralization but led to the rise of tech giants, AI has the potential to give individuals new creative powers while also concentrating influence in the hands of those who control the technology. Ayse's work exemplifies how AI can be used for artistic and educational empowerment, but it also raises questions about the need for ethical development and accessibility in AI tools.

Chef Ayse Ozlem Oguzcan-Cranston, also known as Chef Oz was born in Eskisehir Turkiye, but was raised in Brooklyn, New York. Chef Oz found her love of cooking at an early age, watching her Mother make meals for her family while growing up in Brooklyn. It was this love of cooking that inspired her to enter culinary school at the Institute of Culinary Education in NYC. After finishing her education at the Institute of Culinary Education in NYC, Ozlem decided to work at Abigail Kirsch Catering from 2007-2012. In 2014, Ozlem decided to open her own catering business and decided to cater in the tri-state area. When Ozlem and her husband moved to Kingston, NY, she got the opportunity to take over a brick and mortar restaurant and she opened Masa Midtown in March 2020 as a catering and events venue. When Covid hit, she pivoted her business to do takeout, but eventually opened to the public after the positive response from the community. Currently, Masa Midtown is open as a restaurant and catering business with Chef Oz at the helm. Chef Oz resides in Kingston with her husband, Bill Cranston, and her kitty. In this second part of our conversation with Dr Ayse Yemiscigil, we explore how purpose in life and physical activity might relate to one another. The conversation draws on Ayse's recent article (co-authored with Ivo Vlaev) "The bidirectional relationship between sense of purpose in life and physical activity: a longitudinal study" showing that involvement in physical activity is positively associated with a sense of purpose in life in the future (while controlling for the previous level of purpose in life). In the conversation, we explore possible whys behind this finding and new avenues opened up for future research. Dr Ayse Yemiscigil is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Human Flourishing Program at Harvard University. Her research has explored the relationship between work and well-being, a sense of meaning and purpose in work and physical activity, and the impact of retirement on purpose in life. In the meaningful sports podcast, she also reflects on her own sporting life and how athletes might find more meaning in sports.
In my conversation with Ayse Deniz, we discuss her groundbreaking project, "Classical Regenerated Initiative with AI." Ayse, a renowned classical pianist and composer, shares how she uses AI to amplify human artistry in her live performances by generating music in the style of great composers like Chopin and featuring an AI-generated Chopin as a speaker.Ayse also opens up about her early start in classical piano, the challenges of building a creative career, and her mission to break down elitist attitudes in classical music. She aims to unite people through her performances, showcase the incredible artistry of playing piano at the highest level, and incorporate AI into her online piano academy for beginners. Today's episode explores purpose in life and how it can relate to physical activity and work-life. We ask: How are meaning and purpose different? How is purpose in life connected to well-being? How does socioeconomic status influence who has access to meaningful experiences in work-life, and why is it perhaps related to meaningful leisure? Dr Ayse Yemiscigil is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Human Flourishing Program at Harvard University. When Ayse Birsel gave her talk at our Happy Startup Summercamp she was shocked that she only had 20 minutes to speak. Not only that, we told her that she should be sharing stories and not lessons.Ironically her talk is about lessons; lessons she's learned from doing extensive research about older people and their attitude to life. She compiled these lessons along her research in her new book Design the Long Life You Love: A Step-by-Step Guide to Love, Purpose, Well-Being, and Friendship. As you can imagine this is right up Happy street and we're fully aligned with her message.Laurence and Carlos love her work so much that they wanted to explore her lessons more deeply and give her more time to share her stories.Listen to learn more about Ayse's work and how you can design that long life full of love.LinksJoin the conversation liveBecome a member of the Happy Startup SchoolJoin the next Vision 20/20 cohort

Even if China's priorities might be different from those of the West, it embraces many of the ontological assumptions of the current world order. In her recent book “Before the West: The Rise and Fall of Eastern World Order”, Ayse Zarakol conceptualises world order as a non-Western concept and puts forward an alternative model of sovereignty. In this week's episode of the World in 30 Minutes, Mark Leonard is joined by Ayse Zarakol, author and professor of international relations at the University of Cambridge. They talk about how to define world order, what sort of order we are in today, and what factors eventually cause orders to decline. What could be done to strengthen our current world order? And can we even imagine what would replace it? This podcast was recorded on 16 May 2023. In the latest episode of the Unleashed Podcast, we got to know Ayse Heckel, an Innovation Engineer from our Dallas, TX, office. Ayse has only been with WGI for just over a year and has already made an impact by helping streamline processes and implement new technologies to help improve efficiency. Ayse talked to us about growing up as one of three sisters in a family who moved around a lot, jumping from Connecticut to Indiana and ultimately Texas, where she decided to put down roots. We discussed the cultural differences between the regions she has lived in and even tested out some of the local sayings and accents on each other. We learned that Ayse is a "triple threat," having attended Texas Tech University for her undergrad, where she double majored, receiving bachelor's degrees in Civil Engineering AND Architecture. And if that wasn't enough, she then went on to MIT and obtained her Master of Engineering degree in Civil Engineering. We discussed the invaluable instruction and mentorship she received during her first internship and how it helped her understand the real-life applications of the things she was learning in class. She then explained how she leveraged that internship into a full-time position with the same company during the height of the pandemic. She told us the story of how she joined WGI after a co-worker from her previous company offered her what she called "her dream job", helping jump-start the R&D Department for our Structural Engineering group. We learned what Ayse's role as an Innovation Engineer entails, which does not involve her working on any physical projects but is more focused on doing anything she can to make her Structural team more efficient and accurate at their jobs. Some of those tasks include but are not limited to organizing training exercises and making sure that all of the engineers are up to date on the latest regulatory information, as well as vetting different software or, in some cases, even writing that software or code. She was able to put those code writing skills she learned at MIT to work last year during our annual company innovation contest, where her team placed third, and they are currently in the process of developing the observation report app they submitted to be used internally across the company. We also talked about what Ayse enjoys doing in her spare time, which includes traveling out of the country as often as she can, playing volleyball and tennis, and spending time with her cat Ezra. Go listen to Ayse's episode now to learn what her hidden talent is, what prominent mountain range she has hiked, and where we all landed on the age 'ole debate of "Is a hot dog a sandwich?".

And what led me to apply it to my life was, many, many years ago, I was part of a group of women CEOs and we were asked to define our life's mission in one sentence. And I said in the moment - and I don't know why I said it - I said, my mission in life is to design the life I love. And then eventually that's what I ended up doing because I developed a design thinking process that I called Deconstruction-Reconstruction. And then the two things came together and I remembered, hold on one second, our life is our biggest project. It's like a design project full of challenges and criteria - things that we want and we need, and what if I apply my process to it? And it started as an experiment." Ayse Birsel is an award-winning industrial designer, design thinker, and design educator. She is the co-founder of Birsel + Seck, a design and consulting studio, and the author of Design the Life You Love: A Step-by-Step Guide to Building a Meaningful Future. Ayse has been designing for more than two decades, working with brands like Herman Miller, Brooklyn Museum, and Vitra. She has received numerous awards for her work, including the iF Design Award, the Red Dot Design Award, and the Core77 Design Award. She is passionate about helping people design the lives they love through her work. She has been a design educator at institutions such as MIT, Parsons, and the Pratt Institute. She is also a sought-after speaker for conferences and events. Ayse's mission is to “empower people to create meaningful lives and meaningful products through the power of design.” People today are living longer and healthier lives than ever before, but when we think of aging and the span of our lives, we rarely think of those older years and what we want our lives to look like. Ayse Birsel wrote "Design the Long Life You Love" to encourage people to reframe their approach to problems in life and to inspire individuals and businesses to embrace the opportunities of aging. Through her year-long research, she found that older people were thrilled to be alive and wanted to share this enthusiasm with the world. By writing this book, she hopes to spread awareness of the advantages of aging and to provide a step-by-step process for people to design their own lives.Ayse Birsel's advice for designing a life you love is to start by giving yourself permission to do so. She emphasizes the importance of being true to yourself and creating a life that is based on your values and that looks and feels like you. Birsel then suggests deconstructing your life and breaking it into its parts and pieces in order to get clarity on what matters to you and to understand the connections that you assume are between things. Finally, she encourages people to not attempt to put their lives back together the same way it was before but to instead create something new. The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “Think of a hero of yours, somebody who inspires you. This could be somebody you know, family or friends, or somebody you know of. Today Debbie talks with Ayse Birsel. She's an award-winning industrial designer whose firm has designed hundreds of products for brand name companies like Herman Miller, Ikea and Target. And that includes a product you may have sat on: a toilet seat. She's taken her industrial design methodology, broken it down, simplified it, made it fun and inviting… and turned it into a process for life design. The result is her second and newest book: Design the Long Life You Love: A Step-by-Step Guide to Love, Purpose, Well-Being, and Friendship. One of her key points is that life, just like a design problem, is full of constraints -- time, money, age, location, and circumstances. And if you're an older adult reimagining your last chapter, you know what your final "constraint" is. You can't have everything, so you have to be creative. You have to think like a designer. You have to get ideas and beliefs out of your head and down onto paper and cultivate an attitude of playfulness and optimism - if you want to change. So the book is filled with Ayse's whimsical drawings, and her step-by-step maps: for how to make new friends, how to reimagine work, how to create meaning, how to separate achievement from success, how to check your well-being index, and more. One of Debbie's favorite exercises: how to reconcile yourself to unresolved issues. Make a list, Ayse says, pick three, personify them and write them a letter and then let them go.Ayse calls her method deconstruction / reconstruction. That means deconstruct your life, do a lot of exploring through scribbling and list-making and drawing, and then reconstruct the life you want. Her new book is jammed with exercises and lists and interviews with her favorite mentors. Ayse says you have to draw (even if you think you can't) every day to rev up your creative brain. Debbie's advance copy is littered with yellow sticky notes as well as scribbles and arrows. She can't draw but is trying anyway.
