On this week's edition of the Flavors of Northwest Arkansas podcast, we're in Rogers at the Ashleigh Lounge talking to Chef Colin Stewart. We also introduce a new podcast. It's called Bien The Know. I host it with Bienvenue (now the title makes sense!) Owner & Chef William Mauk. We have culinary discussions, talk food and wine culture and Chef William will take your recipe questions- just hit us up on our social media. We'll also have special guests. The monthly podcast will come out on the 15th of every month and the first episode is up, so check it out here, or wherever you listen to podcasts. Now, some congratulations are in order! The readers of Celebrate Magazine have spoken! Celebrate held voting for their VERY BEST categories of 2024, and Congrats goes to Mermaids in Fayetteville as they win for the VERY BEST seafood restaurant. Hurry over to check them out, because as you've heard here, they'll be closing at the end of the year. Also, big congrats goes out to Cura Culinary. They won the VERY BEST in the fine dining category. Of course, they reside in Bentonville Provisions at the moment, but as they told us on their episode here in late July, they have big plans for moving into their own spot! Colin Stewart is the executive chef of The Ashleigh Lounge, the new wine, sake and small plate bar in Rogers. He's originally from the Buffalo area but has been in NWA for a good while. He's had just about every job you could imagine along the way but eventually got a job cooking, which he fell in love with. He's become a high-end chef without being formally trained. He'll tell you about his path, and the BIG part that being a stay-at-home Dad played into his education. Speaking of education, he's learned quite a bit from chefs around these parts that he's worked with. And if you catch him staring at you while you're eating his food, you'll know why. It's a good thing. He also talks about his food and will tell us how different preparing small plates is from entrée-sized meals, as well as getting new menu's together in basically no time. He's a fun storyteller. If you enjoy the podcast, please like and subscribe! Thank you!

As some of you know, Cruising's Young and Restless has been a recurring section in The Joy of Cruising books taking a look at passionate cruisers of today who will be cruise community leaders of tomorrow. Some of you may know and follow Nick, aka #FutureCruiseDirector. I featured Nick in my latest book, The Joy of Cruising Again http://amzn.to/3lAfyON, and he was on the podcast in September, Travel With Nick, Cruising's Young and Restless for his own YouTube channel. When interviewing Nick for The Joy of Cruising Again he mentioned that he and another aspiring cruise director, Colin, were partnering to launch Cruise with Colin and Nick, a YouTube channel that chronicles their journey toward a mutual goal. I introduced you to Nick a few months back, a high school student, track star, and a part-time employee at the Carnival pier at the Port of Galveston but I will ask him to reintroduce himself. This is my first-time meeting Colin, although we have interacted on social media, and I mentioned him in Nick's feature. Colin is a college student at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona, and it's good to get to know more about him. It is my pleasure to chat with Colin and Nick and learn what they are doing together—and separately to further their aim to be a Cruise Director, and to share their story with the listeners of The Joy of Cruising Podcast. Support the show

This week I talk with Colin Stewart, the former EVP, Strategic Partnerships & Philanthropy, and current member of the advisory board at Arjuna Solutions. I learned several new terms from Colin such as the "non-profit starvation cycle", and donor's "giving elasticity". Arjuna inspires non-profits to work smarter not harder. Colin talks about the algorithm Arjuna uses to determine annual giving asks for large databases and how to look at donors as long term supporters from the annual giving lens. Arjuna Solutions uses behavioral economic modeling and AI services to help leading nonprofits lift their direct response fundraising by an average of 12%. Arjuna's simple-to-adopt services improve giving over a donor's lifetime without the nonprofit having to change fundraising practices or staffing. To learn more about how you can sustainably increase your nonprofit's fundraising, please visit www.arjunasolutions.com. Next week will mark the beginning of a 4-week mini series in collaboration with CASE. We will hear from four leaders in the Independent school space. Welcome back to the 99th episode of the "Wealth Actually" Podcast . . . (We're recording right before Christmas and I'd like give a special thanks to Matthew Passy who helps me sound good and make the trains run on time.) With the end of the year fast approaching, philanthropy is on the minds of many people. For charitable organizations, the mad rush to meet their goals underscores many challenges they face.  Understaffed, under-resourced, and using old tools, non-profits face an uphill climb every year. By using marketing technology, Artificial Intelligence and data science tools, a new company is trying to help with this problem.  ARJUNA SOLUTIONS applies the same marketing concepts and data science found at the top consumer companies in the world to the non-profit space. To take us through the idea of how technology and the non-profit space can intersect, I'm going to speak to COLIN STEWART. Colin leads Arjuna's groundbreaking philanthropic practice, which enables nonprofits to adopt new technologies and increase revenue more easily via philanthropic funding.  We focus on how non-profit organizations can increase their revenue through more data-driven and targeted asks. Finally, we talk about how HNW donors and charities can deepen their relationships and multiply the impact of major gifts in measurable ways through technology. OUTLINE: Technology and the Importance of Philanthropy ARJUNA SOLUTIONS background- What does Arjuna solve?  How do you optimize the right amount to ask for so that you get the most out of a donor (without scaring them off)? Arjuna's ExactAsk process-Where does the Artificial Intelligence fit in?  What data are you using? How do you manage the data to get the right ask amount?Where does it integrate with the recipient organizations systems? For which organizations is this right? (Large Donor Bases where there is plenty of data to analyze and marketing systems to optimize). How can the AI process help the donor amplify a large gift to an organization?-  When multiplying the impact, Is this really a case of a $1 gift generating $3?What does the gift process look look like?Besides potentially more donations, how does it it help the charitable organization? How do you measure success? How does the client measure success? What's next? How do we stay in touch? COLIN STEWART https://www.amazon.com/Wealth-Actually-Intelligent-Decision-Making-1-ebook/dp/B07FPQJJQT/

Trickster: The Many Lives of Carlos Castaneda

Carlos Castaneda didn't just write about a Don Juan—he was one. Over the course of his life, his magnetic personality pulled innumerable women into his orbit. Most stayed briefly. Only a few lasted long enough to see all the different facets that lay underneath the surface of his charismatic personality. One of them was Gloria Garvin. And this is her story. After listening, be sure to check out:Episode Slide Show: bit.ly/3tF7dZJOne Extra Thing: bit.ly/3EeJqEPDiscussion Thread: bit.ly/3E3MTGe www.tricksterpodcast.com Trickster: The Many Lives of Carlos Castaneda is a guppy production:Creator and Executive Producer: Frank HortonProducers: Ville Haimala, James Orestes, Yuval ShapiraCo-Producers: Kevin Barth, Steve Barilotti, Colin Stewart, Ybrahim Luna, Ana Djordjijevic, Dan Girmus, Celeste Cuevas, Collins Harris IV, Robert(a) Marshall, author of an upcoming biography of Carlos Castaneda, American Trickster, Katie Kidwell, Justin AierSenior Producer: Pablo VacaComposer: Ville HaimalaSound Designer and Mixer: Randy WardEditors: Frank Horton, with additional editing by Randy Ward, Paul Calo and Yuval ShapiraWe wish to acknowledge our debt of gratitude to the research of scholars, journalists and authors who have contributed tiles to the mosaic that is our project. Leslie Merinoff is the co-founder of Matchbook Distilling Co. in upstate New York. This small batch, bespoke distillery comes with the intention of coaxing spirits into being from the ground up. Art d’Ecco joins us to talk about his new record, In Standard Definition. A concept album about entertainment. Like channels on an old television set - each song presents an episodic look into this world, our obsession with celebrities and the power they hold over us.  Joining forces with producer/engineer Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, New Pornographers, Destroyer) in ocean-side studio The Hive, In Standard Definition sees d’Ecco packing his heftiest punch yet. Through Stewart’s vintage set up, a decoupage of authentic sounds was recorded to 2-inch tape on a 50- year-old console, forming a musical reflection of the era it evokes. Snacky Tunes: Music is the Main Ingredient, Chefs and Their Music (Phaidon), is now on shelves at bookstores around the world. It features 77 of the world’s top chefs who share personal stories of how music has been an important, integral force in their lives. The chefs also give personal recipes and curated playlists too. It’s an anthology of memories, meals and mixtapes. Pick up your copy by ordering directly from Phaidon, or by visiting your local independent bookstore. Colin Stewart (1933-2014) grew up in a Christian family. His parents were in fellowship in the assembly meeting in Abernethy, Scotland, which meant the young Colin Stewart grew up under the ministry of the poet and hymn writer Isaac Ewan. Saved in his 20's, Colin went into the RAF where he stood boldly for Christ. After his marriage to Marion, he spent a few years in Perth before moving to Bicester in 1968 and staying for the next 40 years.
