We’ve heard and talked about compost and compost teas. We’ve also talked about all the different ways to go about making your own compost and compost teas. But say that you just don’t have the time to make your own, you’d probably just hop on over to the municipal composting site and grab a truckload and go home. How can you tell that the compost you got is actually good quality compost? Does it matter? That’s what our guest, Randy Ritchie, is going to talk about in this episode of In Search of Soil. From working as a landscaper in his design in build business, Randy noticed the need for better, more environmentally-conscious steps in his business. It was then when he met Alan York and the biology in his compost that Randy felt the tug of working with the soil and moving on to composting. Many people make the assumption that it’s too late in life to make a change and chase their dreams. Today’s guest will show you why it’s NEVER too late to pivot from one path to find joy and fulfillment on another. Randy Wilburn is an entrepreneur and serial podcaster. He currently helps design professionals become better leaders, better communicators, and better people. Always learning Do you love to learn? This is one of Randy’s most fascinating traits, and it’s a healthy one for anyone to have. He explains that he’s always been wired to search for more information and knowledge. He was raised by his grandparents after his parents divorced. It was Randy’s grandfather who taught him to take in the rich knowledge available in books and to make books his friends. When he moved into his grandfather’s office/library, his bed literally faced a library wall of books that he can still envision today. Randy’s grandfather was a news reporter who instilled in Randy the love of reading and consuming information through newspapers. TWEET: We’re all works in progress until we die. @randywilburn #chasingdreams Embrace the journey Do you value your journey through life? Randy has a strong mindset about life and gives advice to others who face doubt, failure, and negativity. He says that the second half can be better than the first half. You can preserve your health and wellbeing into your later years, and you don’t have to give in to disappointment and failure. “Your life is a body of work, and as long as you’re still breathing, then your story is still being written.” Randy cites Harlan Sanders, Ray Kroc, and Sam Walton as examples of people in mid-life who achieved success after multiple failures. TWEET: “Your second half can be better than your first half.” @randywilburn #chasingdreams It’s NOT too late! Have you given up because you think it’s too late to make a change and chase your dream? Randy uses the accounting term “sunk cost” to explain the amount of time you put into a cause., Sometimes you have to make a decision about what’s best for you and realize that it’s OK to pivot. When something you’ve tried isn’t working, you may need to go in a different direction--no matter what your age. It’s difficult to give up something we held dear for a long time because there is something else out there that will be greater. TWEET: “Many people have been able to course-correct and find their true north in the process of developing into who they really are.” @randywilburn #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take—”Wake up and find an hour for yourself every morning. Elise’s guest on today’s Because of Horses helps save hundreds of wild Mustangs every year, in the process also providing life skills and hope to the prisoners who volunteered to gentle them. Randy Helm heads up the Wild Horse and Burro Inmate Program within the Arizona Department of Corrections. Randy supervises and trains about 40 prisoners, and over 500 horses and burros, ensuring the animals' careful gentling and making it possible for them to leave BLM's holding facilities and get adopted into loving homes. And while it wasn't initially the program's focus, the very nature of working with horses has been incredibly beneficial to the prisoners, themselves – giving them hope for life after prison, building their self-confidence, helping them connect with other living beings, and teaching them life skills that many were never before exposed to. The outstanding results speak for themselves: while about 40% of Arizona prisoners will be back behind bars within three years of their release, those who participate in Randy’s wild horse training program have a recidivism rate of less than 15%. This episode, Elise and Randy discuss the program's role in saving wild Mustangs and providing them with a shot at new lives, the changes he sees in the prisoner-trainers, and why rehabilitating horses – and men – is so important to him... a former narcotics officer, life-long rancher, and devoted horseman. Topics of Discussion: [1:23] The changes Randy sees in prisoners as they participate in the program. [2:28] How are inmates selected to participate? [3:48] The inmates' varied backgrounds. [4:11] Why the program requires prisoners to have their high school diploma or be working toward their GED. [6:42] How the program guides inmates toward self-improvement. [7:48] Why Randy believes these programs with horses are so meaningful. [9:38] What Randy has observed in the interactions between the horses and the inmates — especially in the early days. [11:16] The program's objective and the bond between horses and inmates. [13:20] Teaching the inmates to work with the horses’ nature through low-resistance training and natural horsemanship. [18:40] The important, teachable moments between the inmates and horses. [21:48] Reading listener feedback! [23:38] What the program looks like on a day-to-day basis and how it helps prisoners develop a strong work ethic. [25:45] The stats don’t lie — the program's impressive success rate. [27:34] How Randy’s own life experiences have been critical in providing a good background for the work he is doing today. [20:10] How Randy drew from his past experiences to coach former inmates to avoid the habits that led to their incarceration. [30:48] The many roles required by Randy's job. [32:20] Why Randy believes wild Mustangs tend to take to Border Patrol fairly easily — sometimes even better than a domesticated Quarter Horse. [39:18] Other ways Mustangs can be better accustomed to trails and different types of environments. [40:44] The complex issue of managing the wild Mustang and how the program helps. [43:17] How the horses are selected for the program. [45:50] From start to finish, what training wild Mustangs is usually like. [46:54] Where to learn more about the wild horse program. Join Turg and Randy Z as they debate and discuss the cultural impact of a redefining of culture in every form and how Millennials have been directly responsible for the changes we observe in our culture today as well as... How have millennials redefined the culture for their generation? Why Randy tries to be a part of Turg’s culture. Turg and Randy debate redefining versus adjusting culture and the differences that separate the two schools of thought. The rate of the consumption of information has transformed the rate at which a culture shifts or changes. The guys discuss how Millennials are the reason why Trump (Forty-Five) was elected president. Influencers are now leading major decisions that affect our culture as Americans. The Trump Effect has forever influenced the future of politics. Turg and Randy discuss why government has been changing the way people view culture because of the heavy influence they carry in reshaping culture – a new perspective that was not always the focus of government. Randy asks Turg is he still believes that government must fail to succeed for future generations. The globalization of the American culture has been sparked by tragedy. Now that the damage was done we have directly forced homegrown influence to develop more negative overtones. Millennials getting involved in government are singularly redefining the future for our own children. The next four years of the political scene across the nation is changing and will see a substantial change over the next election cycle. Do you think you could get involved and make a change? What is your idea of Americana? The melting pot of American society has transformed. For Turg, Americana was important because it helped incorporate all cultures and backgrounds into the fray. Turg talks about how his global awareness – and a s a result his awareness of Americana - came about in high school. For Randy, Americana forever evolves. Americana is the foundation for the unified vision of this country. While Americana wasn’t as “present”, but more impactful in the past, this may have been due to the lack of variety in thought and – now it can be viewed as more of an individual flavor due to the immense amount of variety and individuality that is promoted by free thinking and information exchange. Culture and nostalgia go hand in hand – that is why they evolve to suit the generation that can transform the culture – money, power, respect. The guys discuss how ideas and knowledge are just recycled throughout time. Improvements are a direct representation of what could have been versus what we can achieve or attain now. Randy uses a table to demonstrate the idea that we are all just vintage pieces in a modern era. Turg calls everyone out – look at the past and find out how to make it relevant for the future. Come at us with some new ideas! We want to see what you come up with. Take on the past and use it to inspire our future. We all know it's possible so let's go do it! For some reason Turg keeps missing the fact that the recording session hasn't started when it actually has. To that, he says "Fuck everything". Hey now! Turg and Randy Z are back and in business with a new episode to end a series of listener questions surrounding relationships and what to do when you become the master of your own demise. But first they discuss... Randy getting stuck in DC. Why Southwest is garbage. The benefits of traveling carry-on only. Why planes are constantly falling out of the sky. Why Randy forgets his flight was cancelled. Randy watches Get Out and shares his thoughts. The guys discuss zombies. Turg hates the Randy “wow” remark and cracks the “wow” code. Randy’s car gets keyed. Turg raises his street cred. Meteorologists are just well-dressed snake oil salesmen. Turg reflects on the previous episode and the missed opportunities. Turg issues a mea culpa for missing some developmental details from last week’s discussion about compromise in relationships. The guys bridge the topics from last week to this week when they discuss how one would be able to identify that their partner is holding them back. Making change on your own to benefit the relationship, is it actually effective? Seeking advice and an objective opinion is a weakness many share. Why Randy can’t put up with bullshit anymore. Defense mechanisms and why Turg decides to “manbash”. How often have you asked yourself “Am I the problem”? Reflecting on your own folly; self-diagnosing your own mistakes. This time the guys ask the difficult questions about when relationships breakdown like… when do you draw the line on relationship strain? How much emotional dependence should one derive from a relationship? Should a relationship be your sole source of fulfillment? When someone else needs you too much, what do you do? How about when someone doesn’t need you at all, how do you approach that situation? Why giving too much of yourself is not a healthy relationship goal. How do we know we are giving too much? Why emotional stability can be derived from many sources – and when it fails to fulfill you within your relationship. Finally, the guys address relationship nuance – do you stay or do you go; how and when do you decide after the relationship has been derailed? Why people stay for selfish reasons. How many don’t realize their relationship has been failing and refuse to cut ties for whatever reason keeps them in check. Why we often over-invest in relationships and fear pulling away. And can we ever make the right decision when it comes to cutting ties? We want to hear from you! A lot of times we talk a lot about relationships because at thirty, they become the core of our lives - in every regard. We love, we learn, we live and we die by relationships. So with that, we want to know: Have you been in a one-sided relationship or several relationships? Have a story to share?Need advice from two dudes who might not have the slightest clue on what to do? Drop us a line and let us know and maybe we’ll feature it on our next episode. Don’t forget to listen through all the way to the end. Randy threw in a treat for our fans out there. Being delusional isn’t necessarily a bad thing, or so says Randy Gage. It’s all about whether or not your delusions serve you. Picture a teenager sitting in a prison cell for robbery. Now imagine him telling himself he’d be a millionaire by age 35. Would you think he was delusional? And what if he accomplished it? Today’s guest Randy Gage, did just that. He started out poor, landed in prison, lost everything he owned, and nearly died. But then he turned it all around, starting with his mindset. What Randy learned about the victim vs. victor mentality changed his life, and now he teaches it to others. Key Points At 2:10 - Randy talks about what landed him in prison at a young age, and how that same thing continued to ruin his life, to the point he considered suicide. At 6:05 - Why the Law of Attraction can be utter crap, and the real solution to prosperity that goes beyond simple wishing. At 13:00 - Randy's prosperity tipping point, and YOURS begins with one fraction of a percent toward the positive, and how to program yourself to get there. At 17:40 - Randy and Danny discuss how it's not necessarily a bad thing to be a little bit delusional, if it serves you well. At 24:00 - Why Randy expects success every day in everything, and why you should, too. Enjoying the podcast? Help us spread the word! Never miss an episode! Subscribe to us on iTunes or by RSS. In this session of the Motorcycle Mentor Podcast, I speak with Randy Smith, also known as Motosage. Randy explains why (even after riding for 30 years) he still takes a hands-on motorcycle riding class at the beginning of every riding season. I really enjoyed speaking with Randy. He shares some great riding tips and stories. I wish you could see the motorcycles in his garage. He has more than a few. More specifically, in this session you'll find out about: Who is Randy Smith, and why do his friends call him Motosage? Why Randy takes a hands-on riding class every year? How fast Randy has ridden a motorcycle? What's Randy's favorite motorcycle ride? What Randy thinks you should do, if you start thinking you're an expert rider?
