A third major exhibition at Wellington's $180 million convention centre has failed to break even. The City Council is refusing to quantify the deficit for the Doctor Who event, which ran from last June to October. It also won't release specific visitor numbers, citing commercial sensitivity. Councillor Diane Calvert says ratepayers have a right to know the exhibition's actual cost against the budget. "Because if we don't deal with this openly, how can we look for improvements and how can we action those improvements that I'm sure we can do?" There are calls for a rethink of the management and marketing of exhibitions at Wellington's Tākina convention centre, after it was revealed last year's Dr Who exhibition made a loss. Last July RNZ reported the first two major exhibitions at Tākina, Jurassic World by Brickman and Marvel: Earth's Mightiest Exhibition failed to either break even or reach their target visitor numbers. Irish organisations have been awarded more than €836 million in funding from the EU's Horizon Europe 2021 -2027 research and innovation programme. The current seven-year programme aims to support organisations to tackle global challenges, conduct groundbreaking multidisciplinary research and boost the EU's industrial competitiveness and growth. Ireland's overall national drawdown target is €1.5bn or 1.6% of Horizon Europe's €93.5bn budget from 2021-2027. To date, Irish organisations have been granted €836.4m which equates to 2.14% of the €39 billion awarded so far, showing that Ireland is tracking ahead of its target at just past the halfway point of the programme. Irish organisations awarded €836 million by EU Horizon Europe The €836 million secured by Irish organisations is distributed across 1,295 projects involving 487 individual Irish organisations and businesses. Almost half of those 487 organisations (47%) have been awarded more than a quarter of a million euros, while one in five have secured greater than €1 million. Successful applicants from Ireland are drawn from a range of sectors and include higher education institutions, research-performing organisations, public organisations and SMEs. 217 Irish SMEs have been awarded €233m under Horizon Europe and Ireland ranks at number four amongst the 27 EU member states for SME participation in projects. The top three biggest funding successes for Ireland under the Horizon Europe framework programme areas are: 1) the European Research Council's grants for academic researchers - €131m 2) the Digital, Industry & Space programme area - €122m 3) the Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment programme area - €121m The figures were announced today as more than 600 delegates including EU member state representatives, policymakers and industry leaders from the research and business community attend the Horizon Europe Impact Conference at the Convention Centre in Dublin. This in-person conference will highlight Ireland's success in Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe by showcasing the benefits that participation from small and large enterprises, academic researchers and other stakeholders has produced. Speaking at the conference, Colm O'Reardon, Secretary General at the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science said, "This is a welcome opportunity to take stock at the halfway point of Horizon Europe, to reflect on our successes so far and look forward to Ireland leading and participating in impactful research and innovation projects with our international partners." Enterprise Ireland leads the Horizon Europe National Support Network which aims to promote and secure funding for Irish research projects. Opening the conference Micol Martinelli, National Director for Horizon Europe in Ireland, welcomed the European delegation to Dublin and commended the talent and calibre of innovation coming out of Ireland in recent years. "Ireland's overall success in the Horizon Europe programme, supported by Enterprise Ireland and nine other government agencies and departments, shines a spotlight on the innovation capability of Irish organisations which are competing and winning on a pan-European level. This EU funding is instrumental in providing critical support to enable researchers to further develop their innovations which will influence and strengthen EU policy for the good of future generations." "However, funding awards are not the only success story - the collaboration and building of partnerships and relationships with organisations in other countries is a key driver of impact for research and innovation overall. To unleash Ireland's full potential, we want to encourage and facilitate newcomers and to build on Irish participation for the remainder of the Horizon Europe programme and beyond." Last week the 34th Annual INCOSE International Symposium took place at Dublin's Convention Centre. One of the speakers at the Symposium was Dr. Tina P Srivastava, Co-founder of Badge and Ronan caught up with her for a quick chat. Can you tell me what Badge Inc. does? Badge's phishing-resistant technology authenticates users on any device without storing passwords or other secrets. Each day over 100 billion authentications rely on stored credentials, and the systems used to house these "crown jewels" have become the target of 49% of all data breaches. Previous attempts to solve the problem by streamlining the user authentication experience using on-device authenticators have had the unfortunate side-effect of locking a user to a specific device. When that device is inevitably lost, stolen, out of battery, or just not immediately available to the user, authentication falls back to high friction and insecure account recovery methods. Badge solved a two-decade-old cryptography problem, enabling Identity without Secrets. By letting users derive keys on the fly from their own individual authentication factors, including biometrics like face, fingerprint - without ever storing the biometric data, Badge provides unprecedented privacy with a frictionless user experience. Badge won three Global InfoSec Awards at RSAC 2024 in May 2024. In addition to winning Most Innovative Biometrics Company, Badge was the sole award winner for Privacy-Enhancing Technology and Phishing-Resistant MFA. Like me, you believe that passwords will soon be a thing of the past as they besides humans are the biggest security weakness with Zero Trust being the logical answer. Why do you believe this ? Traditional security models based on perimeter defense and implicit trust are no longer adequate to protect against sophisticated cyberattacks. With wide scale breaches being reported every week in the headlines, one must assume that no person, device or network is inherently trusted and continuous verification of identity and access is required. Badge extends zero trust to the human, not just the device. This is important because other market approaches to authentication bind the user to hardware, meaning when the user does not have access to that hardware, the solution breaks down. As a result, passwords continue to exist for account recovery on a new device. Badge is the only market solution that enables a user to create an account and to authenticate without passwords - without having to enroll a backup device for account recovery. Enrol once, authenticate on any device. The system is backed by peer-reviewed zero-knowledge cryptographic security guarantees. Badge does not store biometric templates or private keys. For the first time ever, users do not need to trust the large identity players, or any company or organization to hold private keys, passkeys, or password hashes on their behalf. Badge is zero knowledge, enabling systems that are fully end-to-end encrypted and fully privacy preserving. Badge is also resilient to human fallibility; if you lose your phone, you can still get access. Because you are your token, and you can re-derive your key on demand on any device without relying on any central database of credentials, Badge provides unprecedented privacy. Badge is poised to become the foundation of the identity backplane of the internet. What will a world of zero trust and no passwords look like? A world of zero trust and no passwords would give power back to users so they can control their own data and access services without compromising their privacy. For businesses, it would provide huge cost-savings potential and a way to gain trust with customers. A world of zero trust would lower the risk of data breaches and cyberattacks, eliminate the need for complex perimeter defenses, and enable faster and more secure access to data and applications from any device and location. Badge Inc. recently signed a partnership with Cisco, and the future for Badge l...

A survey from the Ireland Chapter of Project Management Institute (PMI) has found that nearly half (46%) of project managers feel that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will help to reduce stress in the workplace, but 72% feel that advancements in technology have led to unrealistic expectations from stakeholders who do not understand its capabilities. Conducted by PMI, the survey of 122 project managers was carried out ahead of its annual conference, the Work Smart Summit 2024, in association with EY. The event, which takes place in Dublin's Convention Centre on April 23rd, will discuss the future of project management and will feature David Rowan, founding UK Editor-In-Chief of WIRED magazine and author of the bestselling book Non-Bullshit Innovation as keynote speaker. Feedback was positive on the potential impact of AI on project management as a whole. In fact, some 70% say it would have a permanent transformative effect on the industry, and 74% say it is driving innovation. Three-quarters (75%) agree that AI has already had a significant positive impact on the profession, with 41% saying that the technology is improving project completion rates and delivery times. In terms of project completion, the survey found that the average cost of failed projects in the last 12 months was €710,896.23*, and only 11% of project managers' ten most recent projects met all project success metrics of schedule, cost, project benefits and resources. On the topic of resources, constraints in this area were cited as the top cause of stress by 52% of project managers. The other leading causes of stress were competing priorities (50%), and frequent scope changes (45%). However, the survey did find that nearly two thirds (63%) of respondents feel their workplace has open channels of communication to discuss mental health issues such as stress, burnout, and fatigue. Commenting on the findings, Peter Glynne, Ireland Chapter of PMI President, said: "Project management can of course be a high-pressure profession, but it is clear that - as well as adequate training and effective ways of working - emerging technologies like AI can streamline projects and boost success. "In turn, this enables project managers to work smarter - the theme of our annual conference in April - as opposed to longer or harder. AI can also play a pivotal role in driving automation and innovation, something which we will be discussing at the Convention Centre next month and which makes the future of the industry very exciting." Jennifer Ryan, EY Ireland Business Transformation Partner added: "EY Ireland is proud to once again sponsor the PMI's national conference, the Work Smart Summit. Project managers are at the heart of transformational change, and harnessing systems, technologies and strategies that simplify complex endeavours and enable people and organisations work smarter, comes naturally to them. "Artificial Intelligence, in particular Generative AI, offers project managers the opportunity to further embed innovation and efficiency into their projects, automating routine or process driven tasks and enabling people to focus on higher value tasks and most crucially, enabling more human interactions." It looks almost certain that the CEO of Fletcher Building is gone. The company put the shares in a trading halt yesterday, and announced that Ross Taylor would be reconsidering his position. Which says to me- he's resigning tomorrow. I can't see a way for him to come out and say he's not resigning after that statement's been made. And if he does go, which seems more likely than not, I doubt very much he'll be alone. I suspect there will be other members of the executive - and maybe even the board - walking out that door with him. And I don't think anyone's gonna cry any tears over this. Fletcher Building is not a business that you can argue is doing right by its shareholders. There have been calls for the board and the CEO to resign for at least two years, because the company just keeps lurching from one problem to the other. There was the high rise disaster, then the convention centre disaster, then the GIB board disaster, then the pipes problem over in Australia, and then just last week- the $180 million cost blow out on the Convention Centre and the Wellington parking building. As Sam Stubbs from Simplicity pointed out when he was on our show calling for the resignations last week- in the last two years, the NZX has gone up 7.5 percent and Fletcher Building's shares have gone down 16.5 percent. That's not average performance, that's a very bad performance. Meanwhile, the directors asked for a 25 percent pay increase last year, until they got told that was a bad idea and withdrew it. And Taylor, if you listen to the analysts, gets paid about three times what other CEOs of similar sized listed companies get paid. There are significant shareholders who are pretty cross, and I don't reckon they'll settle for just Ross Taylor's scalp tomorrow. I would expect not just one resignation.
