Global News QUeen's Park Bureau Chief Colin D'Mello talks with Mike Stubbs about Ontario Premier Doug Ford's idea to build a convention centre in Toronto on the Lake - by infilling the lake.
Should we build an island? What’s a show that took a long time to get good? GUEST: Ritesh Kotak - cybersecurity expert
Bob Richardson sits at the Party for Two table with Jerry to talk about the day’s biggest stories. Vincent Geloso from MEI explains why a proposed “Buy Canadian” policy could cost taxpayers up to $12 billion a year. Dan Riskin returns for Telescopic Tuesday with the top science stories of the week. Jerry reacts to Doug Ford’s comments on a new convention centre.
Episode 9 opens with an update on Transcona Councillor Russ Wyatt, who had a health scare last week; then a brief welcome for our newest sponsor, Timeless Tales Travel 13.28 Part 2- Public Works chair Janice Lukes wants to get right to building a permanent bike lane on Wellington Crescent instead of installing a promised temporary lane this summer. That's because she thinks it will save taxpayers money, and the extra time and added inconvenience for motorists and neighborhood residents won't amount to much. In reality, she's doing the bidding of radicals within the bike lobby who see drivers as menaces, vehicles as the enemy of mankind, and proper public consultation as a tool of oppression. With an election looming, it appears Lukes has chosen to cater to the radicals in case they decide to bully her on the campaign trail and shout her down, as they did at a Convention Centre meeting she held last year. You'll hear a recap of the information on her March 4th committee motion gleaned from various news reports, including the comments of an extremist leader of the bike lobby who thinks those who rely on vehicular transportation like seniors and the disabled "are in such a hurry" that it makes them bad citizens. 39.37 Part 3- You'll hear a preview of our upcoming civic election coverage on the podcast and in the Winnipeg Sun. Marty provides an explanation why your financial support of Season 7 is the best way to arm yourself, your family and your neighbours with insight, analysis and information to make good choices about who will best represent you and your community. To make a contribution via e-Transfer, or for details on other methods - email martygoldlive@gmail.com****Check out our Wednesday column: Weekend crime wave creates challenge for Gillingham re-election campaign

There are hopes Auckland's new International Convention Centre will be a huge drawcard for international delegates. A Business Events Industry Aotearoa report reveals the sector delivered $925 million for the economy last year. It shows international delegates here for conferences spent $645 daily on average – higher than holiday visitors. CEO Lisa Hopkins told Mike Hosking they're in growth mode with the new convention centre coming online. She says they now have a strong suite of convention centres across the country, which gives them a broader opportunity to take businesses of different sizes, different needs, and different requirements. The business events sector's working to bump up our international multi-day conferences, which are currently lagging behind domestic bookings. A Business Events Industry Aotearoa report shows events contributed $925 million to the economy last year. Multi-day conferences generated approximately 1.5-million visitor nights for accommodation, nationwide. BusinessNZ Advocacy Director Catherine Beard told Ryan Bridge if you want to attract events you have to have good venues that are big enough to take big conferences – like the new International Conference Centre in Auckland. She says it's a bit like stadium shows for major music acts – if you don't have the events and can't draw the crowds, you're going to miss out. SkyCity's pulling together the final touches on its colossal International Convention Centre ahead of its February 11th opening. A large fire in 2019, when the building was nearing completion, set the project back significantly. Now with just two months to go, SkyCity's locked in more than 100 conferences and events at the new venue. General Manager Prue Daly told Ryan Bridge an estimated 30% of their events each year will be international. She says they've got inquiries all the way out to 2032, and the team is working to make sure they can bring them to New Zealand. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

SkyCity finally has the keys to the long-delayed International Convention Centre in Auckland. General Manager of NZICC, Prue Daly spoke to Corin Dann.
The long-delayed International Convention Centre in Auckland has formally been handed over to SkyCity - several years behind schedule. The works began in 2015, and the project was impacted by additional delays, extra costings and the infamous 2019 fire. NZ International Convention Centre general manager Prue Daly says it's a relief to finally get the keys to the building to get it ready for next February. "We've been patiently waiting, but actually now we're just super-focused on getting that building ready for February - and make sure that when we're open, we're delivering really well." Funny how an episode about "intention" started with a bit of serendipity. I was walking around Fredericton after a recent keynote I gave. About a kilometre from the Convention Centre, who do I bump into, but the very well dressed Marc Smith.Marc's the sort of guy that it's easy to become instant friends with. When he told me the genius story about how he held an actual event to build relationships after he relocated from the West Coast, I knew he had to come on the show.Today, heh's talking intentionality and purpose – and HIS playbook is a must listen. From understanding who you actually are ... to asking "what's your win," he knows how to make the connection, get the job and create an unforgettable life.SUPER BONUS. Marc wears a bright solid colour when he goes to an event. "It makes me stand out in a sea of 300." Smart stuff.
Sandy Dann catches up with Leanna Shoveller and Mark to talk about the Bidyadanga Culture and Music Festival, a powerful community celebration blending music, fashion, food, and culture. Leanna and Mark share how the festival has grown from a small community event into a two-part celebration — one for the Bidyadanga mob and another big show in Broome at the Convention Centre. This year's festival features headliners Cash Savage and The Last Drinks, alongside homegrown favourites like Dark Side, John Bennett and the Old Camp Band, and Louis Yanawana. From art and fashion parades to local damper and food trucks, the festival showcases the creativity and unity of the five tribes of Bidyadanga, while offering a space for the next generation to shine through music, design, and storytelling.
In Leaders Getting Coffee episode 50, our guest is the Mayor of Auckland, Wayne Brown. Wayne Brown is probably New Zealand’s most colourful and best qualified city Mayors. His has been a fascinating life, with experiences ranging from building a mine in Australia to chairing not one but three of our District Health Boards. He grew up in Auckland and went to Auckland Grammar which he says he didn’t particularly enjoy. But an engineering degree from Auckland University set him on a course that would take him around the world and back to New Zealand where his fifty years in business and politics has seen him make a substantial impact. Along the way, he established his own engineering firm and he was good enough at surfing to participate in competitions and good enough at rugby to play on Eden Park. Engineering turned into property development and following a move to the north of Auckland, he developed subdivisions and built factories, apartments and commercial buildings. He developed a reputation for ‘sorting things out’ which led him to chair not one, but three district health boards, a semi political forerunner to him winning the mayoralty of the Far North region, a role he held for two terms. And then came the big one. He ran for the Auckland Mayoralty in 2022 with a promise to “Fix Auckland”. He won by a margin few had predicted and despite some setbacks, including the Cyclone Gabrielle flooding in early 2023, has made consistent and steady progress against his goals for the city. During the Leaders Getting Coffee podcast Wayne Brown talks to Bruce Cotterill about a very full life, the decisions he’s made and his hopes for Auckland’s future. He speaks with enthusiasm about two major pieces of infrastructure that will be completed in 2026 – the Central Rail Loop and the Convention Centre at Sky City – both long overdue but both set to make a major impact on the future of the city. And he talks about a health and fitness regime that sees him going into an election where he is seeking office for a term that will take him into his eighties.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A third major exhibition at Wellington's $180 million convention centre has failed to break even. The City Council is refusing to quantify the deficit for the Doctor Who event, which ran from last June to October. It also won't release specific visitor numbers, citing commercial sensitivity. Councillor Diane Calvert says ratepayers have a right to know the exhibition's actual cost against the budget. "Because if we don't deal with this openly, how can we look for improvements and how can we action those improvements that I'm sure we can do?" Hospitality New Zealand board member and owner of Trinity Group Holdings Jeremy Smith spoke to Corin Dann.

On this show we discuss Disrupt Land Forces, the coalition of community groups who created a week long festival of resistance bringing diverse actionists and tactics into the joined struggle against the arms trade. Land Forces is the largest land based weapons expo in the Southern Hemisphere, and it was held at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre in Naarm/Melbourne in September 2024. Protestors were met with excessive use of force by police including the use of OC spray, rubber bullets, flash-bangs, physical violence and riding horses into the crowd resulting in injuries. For years, there have been multiple wine competitions no matter what country or region. The BC wine industry is no exception. The latest wine awards are The BC Top 50 wines and Wine of the Year as part of the 2024 Okanagan Spring Wine Festival, which is on now. Friday night the results were announced at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre and then hundreds descended on the trade floor to do their own judging. Kimberly Hundertmark, the GM of The Wine Fests said on Tasting Room Radio last week that wineries were asked to send their very best releases. We have two guests and dear friends on this Podcast. Both are wine stars and both were judges at this event DJ Kearney. A Global wine authority, educator and Director of Wine at Terminal City Club. Black Belt. Rhys Pender – Master of Wine. Co-owner of Little Farm Wine in Cawston and owner of Wine Plus. World's greatest fisherman.
