Key Takeaways: Bitcoin as a Digital Safe Haven: Bitcoin has a potential future safe haven asset, similar to how the S&P 500 functions today—only within the digital, decentralized realm of cyberspace. Currency as a Language: Understanding currency is crucial for investors. Just as mastering a language enhances communication, financial literacy empowers more strategic and informed investment decisions. S&P 500 vs. Weak Currencies: The S&P 500's historical strength—especially when compared to volatile currencies like the Argentine peso—highlights its role as a reliable benchmark and wealth-preserving vehicle. Wealth Preservation Strategies: The wealthy often treat stable financial instruments like the S&P 500 as long-term “savings accounts,” using them to maintain and grow wealth in uncertain economic environments Blockchain and Capital Flow: Looking ahead, blockchain-based assets—especially Bitcoin—are likely to attract significant global capital as trust in traditional systems erodes and decentralized finance gains traction. The traditional correlations between some asset classes went haywire in April. Our analysts Serena Tang and Vishy Tirupattur discuss whether, in this environment, investors still consider U.S. Treasuries and the U.S. dollar to be reliable ports in a storm. Read more insights from Morgan Stanley.----- Transcript -----Serena Tang: Welcome to Thoughts on the Market. I'm Serena Tang, Morgan Stanley's Chief Cross Asset Strategist.Vishy Tirupattur: And I'm Vishy Tirupattur, Morgan Stanley's Chief Fixed Income Strategist.Serena Tang: Today's topic, how investors' perceptions of safe havens are evolving, the impact on correlation between asset classes, and what all this means for your portfolio. It's Wednesday, May 7th at 10am in New York.April was a really challenging month, and some market moves were highly unusual. There was also a lot of investor concern whether U.S. Treasuries would continue to be a safe haven. In fact, this became one of the biggest market debates over the last few weeks.Vishy, let's start here. Prior to this recent sell off, foreign investors looked at U.S. assets as a safe haven. Why is that? And is it still the case now after this turbulent month?Vishy Tirupattur: So, Serena, if you just step back and look at it, U.S. enjoyed positive growth differentials and positive yield differentials with developed markets in the rest of the world. On top of that, there was a consistent policy – not necessarily infallible policy – but there's a consistent policy with a clear sense of demarcation between the executive and the central bank. All of this meant U.S. was a very attractive destination for foreign investor flows. Not only during periods of normalcy where U.S. equities really attracted inflows and performed really well, but also during the periods of economic stress; where even periods where the stress was coming from the U.S. itself, such as the Global Financial Crisis. This correlation between bonds and stocks held and U.S. Treasuries were the safe haven asset as the single largest and most liquid, and highly negatively correlated asset with risk assets. So that really worked. What we are now seeing is that growth differential I talked about may no longer be holding. You know, for these [20]25 and [20]26 U.S. and euro area growth basically will converge – and if our economists' expectations are right, in 2026, euro area will be growing at a faster pace than the U.S.So, growth differential argument is fading. And there are some questions about the continued Fed independence. So put all these things together. Some investors are beginning to question whether U.S. assets will continue to be safe haven assets. So let me come back to you Serena. There've been some recent market moves that have been extremely unusual. That's what created all this debate. In some of – a few days in April, during the periods of sell off, we had both stocks and bonds selling off. And it felt like cross-asset correlations have gone totally haywire. So, can you talk a little bit about which correlations have changed? Which correlations have held up in these sell off?Serena Tang: What was highly unusual, and I think reflects part of the debate on U.S. as a safe haven, is the correlation between U.S. equities and the dollar. It is very high at the moment, about sort of two standard deviation above the five-year average. While it's not unheard of for FX stocks correlation to be high, it is usually more associated with EM or emerging markets rather than DM or developed markets. As a means, investors now require higher risk premium for holding the equities, which is a risk asset; but also holding the dollar, which again, traditionally is not thought of as a risk asset.Vishy Tirupattur: So, Serena, how did the correlation between bonds and stocks hold up in this period?Serena Tang: Surprisingly, the correlation have really, really held up. Stocks and bond return correlation turned very negative during the sell off that we saw, which means that equity losses were actually offset by bond returns. Now, this isn't entirely true across the curve. You saw 2 Year Treasuries being a much effective diversifier than say the 30 Year Treasury. But all in all, I think it means bonds still work as a diversifier. Now on this point Vishy, how do you think policy will impact asset correlations we've been talking about, as well as the perception of U.S. assets as a safe haven.Vishy Tirupattur: So, as I said before, positive growth differentials fade, and we have negative growth differential. And if there are continued questions about the Fed's independence, so some of the attraction of U.S. assets, particularly U.S. Treasuries as a safe haven asset, will be challenged. But that challenge hits the practical reality of the size and the scale of the safe haven assets. So, if you look around, if you add the comparably rated European government bond market and compare that to the U.S. government bond market, the U.S. market is about 10 times as larger. So, more scale, more liquidity, and the ability to deploy capital during the periods of stress is clearly more in the U.S.So, this is what I would say. The status of U.S. dollar as the global reserve currency and U.S. Treasuries as the global safe haven asset have taken a bit of a ding, but not gone away.Serena Tang: Vishy, thanks so much for taking the time to talk.Vishy Tirupattur: Great speaking with you, Serena, as always.Serena Tang: And thanks for listening. If you enjoy Thoughts on the Market, please leave us a review wherever you listen and share the podcast with a friend or colleague today.

Safe and Reliable is the new Safe and Effective. Experts and fact-checkers tell us that US elections are so safe, reliable, effective, and perfect that to question oddities or inconsistencies is to threaten the very foundation of representative government. President Joe Biden then brazenly declared that ballots will need to be counted for the mid-terms days after the election to ensure ‘legitimate' votes are ‘legally' counted. Just in time for voters to make last minute low information and emotionally inspired decisions, men in tactical gear are showing up at ballot boxes, illegal immigrants are breaking into Democratic headquarters, and the Democratic House Speaker's husband is attacked with a hammer, sort of, by another illegal immigrant. When Republican canvassers are assaulted, someone tries to assassinate Supreme Court Justices, or someone questions why Obama is campaigning with known racists, the cameras shut off and people are forcibly carried away by security.

XPression Maps produces full raster images for video production. However, not every time XPression Maps imagery is used will be a full screen display. Sometimes, XPression Maps output files might get used in an Over-The-Shoulder (OTS) or siderail graphic template and it is difficult for an artist or MOS Newsroom user to know what portion of the map image will fit in the OTS window. XPression Maps now has a non-binding safe title marker set that allows the user in XPression Maps Designer or the XPression Maps MOS workflow to select the safe title marker for the workflow they expect to use the map in. The entire raster still gets used, but the region of interest (inside the safe title marker) should be populated and text or images required should be visible inside the safe title marker. Confused? On this episode of the Somewhat Frank Podcast, Frank Gruber (@FrankGruber), John Guidos (@JohnGuidos) chat about … 1.) Mushrooms Communicate - Apparently, they use up to 50 words to communicate among themselves. Makes me wonder the same about trees. (https://twitter.com/frankgruber/status/1513690113968070664?s=21&t=gtQR6J3MYyOudT0Hr0eqy) 2.) Microplastics are found in human blood for the first time - Well, this is disrupting. What can we do about it? (https://twitter.com/frankgruber/status/1507007332600848384?s=21&t=i5jozVp7_dN0ldD5ipC6Ug) 3.) Elon Buying Twitter? Elon Musk made big moves a week ago buying a majority share of Twitter and then proposing to buy the whole company for $43B. Since then there has been a movement by the other largest investor Vanguard Group to buy just a little more of the company to take back over as the largest owner of Twitter. Of course, Twitter exploded with conversations about the situation and I polled on what should be done. Looks like most people voted for Elon to take over Twitter. I see it a lot like how media companies like newspapers were run by the wealthy in the past and you have seen that pattern return with Jeff Bezos owning the Washington Post for example. It also reminds me of the wealthy owning sports franchises. But all that aside, will Elon be good for Twitter or would his full ownership have negative impacts? (https://twitter.com/frankgruber/status/1514953746274566150?s=21&t=gtQR6J3MYyOudT0Hr0eqyg) 4.) NFT Discussion & A NFT Predictions - The NFT sales peaked in September 2021 but there are lots of new projects picking up steam and there are new ways people are using NFTs to fund projects. The big ones that you hear a lot about are Bored Ape Yacht Club, Doodles, and Crypto Punks, but projects like Moonbirds and VeeFriends are picking up steam as they've been rolling out. For example, there is a company dropping NFTs to mine meteors. (https://twitter.com/frankgruber/status/1508556287071633412?s=21&t=2GvKmsVQZ19r96wcBViDhg) I just heard of a couple of political candidates dropping NFTs to support their efforts which led me to a prediction that every major political campaign will have an NFT. (https://twitter.com/frankgruber/status/1514969414474608648?s=21&t=gtQR6J3MYyOudT0Hr0eqyg) Is there a web3 or NFT project you are working on? I'd love to hear about it. 5.) Work & Culture trend: The Two-Shift Workday - We have adopted the two-shift juggle in 2020 as soon as the pandemic hit. It went on pretty regularly until school was back in session and things got back to normal but it's not going away. We all are connected to our phones 24x7 so if we don't make a conscious effort to unplug then you may see ourselves falling into this routine and it can't be healthy long term. (https://twitter.com/frankgruber/status/1511093005012320269?s=21&t=gtQR6J3MYyOudT0Hr0eq) 6.) Rise of the Rest has a tour, fund & now a book - Steve Case announced a new book, titled Rise of the Rest after the tour and fund that he kicked off in 2015 through three or four dozen cities since. I have been a partner and bus rider on a bunch of the stops on the tour and either interviewed Steve or hosted the startup pitch competition on those various stops along the way so it's in much anticipation I await the launch of the book. You can preorder it here. (https://twitter.com/frankgruber/status/1512145798129143811?s=21&t=i5jozVp7_dN0ldD5ipC6Ug) Also, you might want to check out my interview with Anna Mason of the Rise of the Rest Fund that we dropped recently over on the Startup of the Year Podcast. (https://podcast.startupofyear.com/0081-anna-mason-from-the-rise-of-the-rest-fund-is-passionate-about-investing-between-the-coasts) 7.) New Safe tool for startups by AngelList - For all the startup founders raising funding from VCs or angels, you will need a SAFE term sheet and this new free tool can help you generate it. Y Combinator introduced the safe (simple agreement for future equity) in late 2013, and since then, it has been used by lots of startups as the main instrument for early-stage fundraising. (https://twitter.com/frankgruber/status/1514927687541927937?s=21&t=gtQR6J3MYyOudT0Hr0eqyg) Bonus: Finally, my latest guilty pleasure was binge-watching 1883 on Paramount+. I have to say, I am so thankful that we have modern medicine these days. It was only 139 years ago but life back then was pretty hard compared to today. And the Oregon Trail was brutal. It's a great series, and I loved it. The actors all did an amazing job making me care for them. That said, it's also super sad and violent so it's not for the faint of heart. It took me two days to shake the series finale and I would bet I am not alone. Gold has been a source of wealth for thousands of years and a safe haven in uncertain times, but with cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin coming onto the scene, is that about to change? Before we can answer that question, we need to understand the history of the US dollar and how gold has fared over the past 100 years to get an idea what the future may hold. Find out what makes Bitcoin so special and why it may be the gold of the 21st century. A growing number of people believe Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies could soon replace gold as a safe haven against a depreciating dollar. Compared to the other cryptocurrencies, one of the unique features that sets Bitcoin apart is the fact that the total supply is structurally restricted to 21 million coins. This is a hard cap on the total amount of Bitcoins that will ever be in existence and is one of the reasons why so many investors are bullish on the future value of Bitcoin. Bitcoin has been often compared to gold. Gold has been used to store value during uncertain times for thousands of years. With mining on the decline and demand going up, it's safe to assume that prices will rise in the future. Whether you lean toward digital currencies or prefer gold, at the core of the debate is a universal distrust of government. In recent years, governments around the world have spent and printed fiat currency at an unprecedented level, the results of which remain to be seen. With gold, history has proven its viability, but historical events have impacted its price. After the Federal Reserve Act was implemented in 1913, the government wanted to increase the money supply and declared that the spot price of gold would increase by 69%. In ancient Rome, Caesar diluted and trimmed the gold coins used as currency in order to increase the overall supply of coins. In 1971, the government was facing another money supply shortage. With the US dollar still on the gold standard, their printing capabilities were restricted. Their answer was to leave the gold standard and convert to a fiat currency. Fiat currency is a currency that's not backed or pegged to any real world asset, and instead is backed by the printing country's credit worthiness. Gold has been on a rocky incline since. Gold seems to be inversely correlated to world events. When things are uncertain, gold rises as people look for a safe haven for their wealth, and in good times the price declines as people are more willing to put their money elsewhere. After 2001, the US experienced a series of drastic changes. 9/11, the tech bubble, and the 2008 financial crash all happened within an eight-year span and since then, the government has been printing money in an unprecedented fashion. In recent years, and as a result of tax cuts and deregulation, the markets rose by 56%. There have been many comparisons between the United States and the Roman Empire. The US is currently going down the same economic road Rome did before the collapse of the empire. There are rising tensions between the US and Russia, as well as China, that are creating conditions eerily similar to the Cold War. It's impossible to know for sure if Bitcoin will replace gold as the new safe haven for wealth. For diversified investors, the best answer may be to own both. Bitcoin and the blockchain technology have some advantages compared to gold, but it also comes with disadvantages. Bitcoin may be revolutionary in the near future, but it still relies on systems like electricity and the internet to function, whereas gold doesn't have those drawbacks. At this point, Bitcoin is too volatile to truly replace gold as a storage of wealth. One of the most important things to consider before buying gold, Bitcoin, or any other investments is really understanding and knowing your risk tolerance. https://youtu.be/ze-E_TMWwrU Randy Gage is a thought-provoking, rags to riches entrepreneur who has published 14 books in 25 different languages including the New York Times bestseller Risky is The New Safe. --- Apply Leverage With Randy Gage Our guest is Randy Gage, that I have been following Randy for the last probably 15 years, early 2000 when I first was introduced to some of his work, the Prosperity Series, and I never thought that I was gonna have him come on my interview, but this is a very exciting moment. Randy is a thought-provoking, critical thinker. He also is a rags-to-riches entrepreneur, if I may say so, and he has published 14 books in 25 different languages. One of his books, Risky is the New Safe, was actually a New York Times bestseller, is a New York Times bestseller and he's coming up with a new book, Radical Rebirth, that I already pre-ordered and can't wait to actually receive it in the mail. So without further ado, welcome to the show, Randy. Hey, great to be on with you. Is that album you're holding, is that CDs or was that cassette tape? That's CDs at least. Yeah. It's not quite, although I have, you know, I was straddling that age of cassette tapes to CDs and I no longer can use them, right? I now have to go to the MP3, but I saw on the website that these are still available in MP3 format. Yeah, that album is at least 20 years than a bestseller for us. It's kind of my overview principles on prosperity, I guess, would be the best way to describe it. It was fascinating and it's a little bit spiritual, probably more than I am kind of vied for. But I was very intrigued by this series and I dug into some of the other resources that you offered at the time. And anyway, it's pretty interesting. So tell us a little bit about your background. I think it's a fascinating background, your entrepreneur journey, how you got here and how you became an entrepreneur in the first place and how you built up your speaking and author business. Well, I took a circuitous route to being an entrepreneur because I feel like I was born an entrepreneur because when I was 11, you know, I come from a poor family, single mother who raised three kids by herself, knocking on doors, selling Avon products, and I raked leaves, shoveled snow, babysat, delivered newspapers, just any kind of thing. And in a big way, I mean, I actually, as I was delivering the hometown paper and I knew people went to the drugstore on Sundays and they would buy the copy, the Sunday edition of the New York Times or the Washington Post. And so I wrote those papers and said I've got a distribution company here. I was a paper boy but I wrote it on a letterhead that said Gage Distributors and said you know we distribute newspapers and I would like to be the agent here in Madison, Wisconsin. And they said, OK. And so I started doing Sunday delivery of my hometown paper and then the Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune and the New York Times. And I actually sold that company to a grown-up person for a few thousand dollars when I was... When was that? How old were you? I was probably 15 at that time. So I started that way, and then I was a teenage alcoholic, a teenage drug addict. I made a lot of really poor choices. I ended up in jail for armed robbery at 15 years old. And then, of course, had to make some new decisions in my life, right? And so I resolved to get out and play, work hard and play by the rules. And so I went back to working for people. And I had started as a dishwasher in a pancake house. And so I became a cook and then a manager, trainee and a assistant manager. And I just got in the world of being an employee. But it took me some time to realize, no, that's not what I want to do. If I'm going to be in the restaurant business, then I need to find a way to own my own restaurant. I think I'm psychologically unemployable, so I found my way back to being an entrepreneur. That's awesome. So how old were you when you kind of made the jump or st...
