I was absolutely terrified when I made my first BIG investment in a business coach and mentor. Sure, I had worked with coaches in the past. I had hired people for one-off projects in my business. But this felt different. It was an investment on a totally different level and that made it all the more intimidating. Not only that, but I knew I was going to have to show up on a totally different level and that scared the sh*t out of me. So today, I’m opening up and sharing what I’m afraid to tell you about this scary and life-changing investment. I’m telling you what it DIDN’T look like, how I’ve made myself wrong for this, the shame I felt around it, and how ultimately this served me beautifully. My hope is that this episode gives you a heavy dose of permission to make peace with your own investments and see far more of the results you want in both life and business because of it.-Check out the show notes here!-I’m trying a totally new thing and I’m really freaking excited about it. With February being a month devoted to love, and with self-love being my word of the year, I’m offering you an opportunity to invest in yourself and your business in a whole new way. If the idea of investing in mindset and sales coaching freaks you the eff out because you’re afraid you won’t see a return, then this is the exact opportunity you’ve been waiting for. For the entire month of February, I’m offering all new pay-in-full Future You clients the opportunity to work with me for 20% off my base rate in exchange for a 20% revenue share, paid monthly. Now, let me explain what that means: Essentially for every dollar you make in gross revenue through our work together, I make 20 cents of that. So for example, if you make $1,000 in a given month, I’d invoice you for $200. This is a truly incredible way to work with me because that’s over $1,000 of the upfront cost and it means that I only make more money when you make more money. If you’re ready to shift your mindset so you can own your expertise, put yourself out there, gain visibility, and close more sales so you can truly thrive, then I invite you to get a taste of what coaching with me is like on my free 30-minute Sincere Sales coaching call. Let me be clear, I have done a remarkable amount of inner work that has allowed me to build the beautiful, balanced life and successful, thriving business that I have today. But even still, I find that there are parts of my story that I would prefer to sweep under the rug—thoughts I have about how my business “should” look or how my story “should” have unfolded. And well, when it doesn’t look that way or it didn’t happen that way, I felt an immense amount of shame around it. While you know that I’m not one for “should-ing” on yourself, I’ve found that keeping these things to myself has only built them up in my head and brought up even more fear around them (funny how that happens, right?). So in this series, I’m pulling back the curtain and sharing the things I’d rather not share. Not only that, I’m owning them. My hope is that this series will help you to embrace your own imperfections, release the shame you may be feeling, shine a light on your own challenges, and start OWNING IT so you feel empowered to get more of the results you’re after in your own life and business. This is the most real and vulnerable I've ever been and I'm so excited to share it with you!-Check out the show notes here!-With February being a month devoted to love, and with self-love being my word of the year, I’m sharing things I’ve never shared before and doing things I’ve never done before—because when you love yourself you’re more inclined to do what feels good, ya know?! And it just so happens that I have something extra special that I’m excited to share with you so you can get YOUR mindset in check and feel that very same self-love for yourself and your business. If you’ve been thinking about getting the mindset support you need to see more results but have feared that you won’t see a return, then this is the exact opportunity you’ve been waiting for. Good Day WS! Thanks for joining us for West Seattle Daily Ep 033 on this Thursday, brought to you by Sea-Town Real Estate. I'm your host, Christian Harris. On this Throwback Thursday, we are going to conclude our 4 week exposition of racism in the housing industry! With February being Black History Month, we’ve been researching and educating ourselves on some of the history of racism in real estate, specifically in Seattle. At the start of the month, I attended the Inman Real Estate Connect conference in New York City and during this conference we heard from a panel of reporters, who did a very detailed, in depth 3 year undercover experiment in Long Island, NY. In their tests, they found that 40 percent of the RE agents did not treat the undercover minority buyers the same as the white buyers. This experiment is one of the first investigations of real estate agents discrimination since the enactment of America’s fair housing act in 1968. Newsday, a local New York journalism company found evidence of widespread separate and unequal treatment of minority potential homebuyers and minority communities on Long Island. The results of this study, specifically the poor manor in with the agents and their brokerages responded when their illegal & racist behavior was brought to their attention, inspired us here at Sea-Town Real Estate to take a deeper look into discrimination, specifically in our neighborhood of West Seattle. In past episodes we covered some for the history of "Racial Restrictive Covenants" in deeds, which prohibited minorities or even in some cases, Jewish people from buying homes in specific communities, even here in the oh so progressive Seattle. You can still see some of these effects of the more racially segregated communities here in West Seattle and South Seattle.
We covered the practice of Steering (which is also illegal) and is essentially when  builders, brokers, and rental property managers use words or actions that direct or "steer" prospective buyers or tenants into or away from particular neighborhoods based on the racial makeup of a neighborhood or area. Last week we dove into some of the history of The Fair Housing Act of 1968 and how that was a game changer piece of legislation, finally providing legal teeth for violations of fair housing law and racist behavior in real estate and rentals. So now what? We have the laws on the books and we all know... or should know that treating someone different based on their skin color, nationality, sex or whatever is wrong. But the experiment sited earlier provides empirical evidence of what many of us already know anecdotally known. People (including myself and you) still have biases and there is still discrimination. So what do we do about it? Through our conversations and research this last month, we wanted to put together a list of ways that you individually can work to dissolve racism in your everyday life. Educate: ⁃ Listen carefully & respectfully, follow accounts on social media that shed light on these various topics, so that you can share with others or be an advocate for people who are experiencing discrimination ⁃ Honor the feelings and experiences of people of color ⁃ read books that make you uncomfortable... So you can better understand people who have different life experiences and perspectives than you. ⁃ Ask questions and earnestly listen to better understand people of color before speaking or trying to have your viewpoint heard or understood ⁃ Challenge other people in your life to think critically about racism and their own biases. This goes for people of color too. We can't fight racism and un-equal treatment with racism and unequal treatment. We all have biases but if we are unaware that we have them, we will continue being blind to our culpability in the problem. ⁃ Let's move the ball forward with MLK's vision of a color blind society, ..."Judging others not based on the color of their skin, but the content of their character." ⁃ accounts on Instagram to follow on these issues: ⁃ @rachelcargle ⁃ @ijessewilliams ⁃ @mkbhd ⁃ @serenawilliams ⁃ @iamderay ⁃ @angeladavis ⁃ @oprah ⁃ @blackgirlnerds

Good Day WS! Thanks for joining us for West Seattle Daily Ep 033 on this Thursday, brought to you by Sea-Town Real Estate. I'm your host, Christian Harris. With February being Black History Month, on this Throwback Thursday episode, we are on our second to last installment on the topic of long-lasting effects of institutionalized racism in real estate. For some additional context, listen to our last couple Throw Back Thursday episodes on Youtube. Last week we talked the effects of "Racial Restrictive Covenants" tied to specific properties or entire neighborhoods, prohibiting non-whites from residing there. Today we are going to talk a little about the Fair Housing Act of 1968 that officially made it illegal and provided a meaningful federal enforcement for prohibiting discriminating based on race, religion, national origin or sex in the sale, rental or financing of housing. The Fair Housing Act is actually part of the larger Civil Rights Act enacted in 1968 by President Lyndon B. Johnson during the Martin Luther King assassination riots. It is built on the already established Civil Rights Act of 1866, which defined US citizenship and affirm that all citizens are equally protect by the law. In the wake of the Civil War, this law was intended to protect the civil rights of persons of African descent born in or brought to the US as slaves. This legislation was a major support for the Thirteenth Amendment and was passed by Congress, but vetoed by Democrat Andrew Johnson but then overruled by a two-thirds majority vote by the Republican majority Congress, making this bill the first major piece of legislation where Congress overrode a presidential veto, allowing it to become law without a presidential signature. The problem with the civil rights laws that were already on the books prior to 1968 is that none of them had any enforcement mechanism built in, so there was nothing that could really be done if they were violated... and let's be honest, from what we have observed from history, it didn't really sound like the majority of society or the government had any real intention of enforcing such laws back then anyways. It's taken us a long time as a society to get to where we are now and be able to have honest conversations about racial issues. While overt and on-the-books racism may be a thing of the past, our individual biases & prejudices are something we need to be keenly aware of... We will talk about that more on our next Throwback Thursday episode. Info from https://www.hud.gov/program_offices/fair_housing_equal_opp/fair_housing_act_overview#_The_Fair_Housing ---- Examples of Housing Discrimination: Discrimination Isn’t Always Obvious – Example #1: John, who is a Black man, speaks to a prospective landlord on the phone about leasing an apartment. On the phone, the landlord seems eager to rent to John, but when John meets with the landlord in person to fill out an application, the landlord’s attitude is entirely different. A few days later, John receives a letter saying that his application was denied because of a negative reference from his current landlord. John is surprised because he never had problems with his landlord, and his landlord swears she was never contacted for a reference. John suspects that the real reason he was denied the apartment was because he is Black, so John files a complaint with HUD. HUD investigates and it turns out John is right – the landlord’s files show a pattern of discrimination because of race and color. Who Is Protected? The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in housing because of: • Race • Color • National Origin • Religion • Sex • Familial Status • Disability Equal Treatment in Home Renting and Selling: • Refusing to rent housing, sell housing, or negotiate for housing • Making housing unavailable or lying about the availability of housing • Denying housing • Establishing different terms or conditions in home selling or renting • Providing different housing accommodations or amenities • Blockbusting (convincing property owners to sell cheaply because of the fear of racial, religious, or other minorities moving into the neighborhood) • Denying participation in housing-related services such as a multiple listing service Exemption From the Fair Housing Act: In certain cases, the following groups may be exempt from following the Act: • Single-family homes that are rented or sold without using a broker • Owner-occupied homes with no more than four units • Members-only private clubs or organizations Enforcement of Fair Housing: The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is responsible for enforcing the Fair Housing Act. HUD enforces the Act in two ways: 0. Fair Housing Testers: HUD hires people to pose as renters or home buyers to see if discriminatory practices are being used. As a landlord, you need to be careful what you say in person, on the phone, and in rental ads. 0. Investigate Discrimination Claims: Individuals who feel their fair housing rights have been violated under the Fair Housing Act can file a discrimination claim with HUD. HUD will investigate the claim, determine if there is any merit to it, and decide if further legal action is necessary. I hope this mini history lesson has been interesting and educational for you & opens other conversations with friends & family. Feel free to reach out and share your thoughts. Thanks for listening & catch ya tomorrow. Link to full investigation video - https://projects.newsday.com/long-island/real-estate-agents-investigation/

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with human right activist Malaak Shabazz, who is the youngest daughter of Malcolm X. With February being designated Black History Month, she has been traveling to many events which have provided information and analysis on the life and times of her father. She has just returned home to New York from Washington, D.C., from the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture, where there was a screening of the new documentary "The Lost Tapes: Malcolm X". This documentary will begin airing on TV February 26 on the Smithsonian Channel. Next up is Los Angeles for the Pan African Film Festival, where on February 9 there will be the first of three screenings of the documentary film "Malcolm X: An Overwhelming Influence on the Black Power Movement". This highly acclaimed film, directed by Thomas Muhammad, had its public debut in December at the the African Diaspora International Film Festival in New York. It features original interviews with veterans of the civil rights and Black liberation movements of the 1960s who discuss Malcolm X's influence and participation in these struggles in the South at that time. Then it is back to D.C. for two performances on February 22 of A. Peter Bailey's play "Malcolm, Martin, Medgar". She is the narrator of this imaginary and contemporary encounter between Malcolm X and civil rights leaders Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Medgar Evers. A. Peter Bailey was one of the closest associates of Malcolm X at the time of Malcolm's passing in 1965. We spoke with her by phone Friday. "Most people," she said of her father, "just think he was just here in New York or Brooklyn, when he was all over the United States, as well as London, France, Africa. "So, I was raised as a global child. He was an advocate for the African diaspora on a global level. "And I think these two films, and many others that are going to be coming out, will show that he was an advocate for the African diaspora." Documenting and disseminating accurate information on this history is especially essential in today's era of Trumpism with its open promotion of racism and white supremacy. One area of that history, however, that has not yet been particularly thoroughly well-documented is Malcolm X's role and influence in the martial arts. His autobiography goes into detail about the importance he attached to training in the martial arts. After his passing, his widow, Dr. Betty Shabazz, made sure that all of their six daughters had some training in different forms of martial arts. We thus discussed the need for some type of media project documenting Malcolm X's influence in the martial arts in depth. We also discussed Malcolm X's emphasis on reading and education, the key contributions of Dr. Betty Shabazz, the setting up of the Shabazz Center in New York on the site of the old Audubon Ballroom, how there will also be more events for Black History Month in which Malaak Shabazz will participate which will be announced shortly, and much, much more. In this episode, Brian joins Allie to talk about how they remain so close and keep intimacy alive, even with one thousand children. With February, the month of love, right around the corner, the topic will largely circle around love, intimacy and marriage. However, this particular episode comes from the many questions Allie receives from her followers. People often ask how Allie and Brian remain to be so close and connected. The biggest thing to remember is that in order to feel close and connected to your significant other, you have to stop putting your intimacy on the back burner, putting it off until after you care for your kids. You need to keep the fire burning all day long, so that when night arrives, you’re happy to spend time together. (We’ll be discussing grown-up things in this episode, so be sure to pop your headphones in to listen.) With February on the way, that once-fabled dumping ground of crappy movies that studios don't care about, Leigh, Brendan, and Chris turn their attention to an all-too-relevant topic: what was the worst experience we ever had in a movie theater? The discussion covers both horrible movies and horrible environments, and touches on such diverse topics as trees that jizz, appalling YA rip-off movies, and that horrible period where Star Wars: The Clone Wars was supposed to be the last Star Wars movie to ever be released in a theater. We also announce our upcoming February Valentine rom-com movie and a suitably red cocktail to go with it.
