Recently, Accademia Giallo presented a rare interview with genre director extraordinaire, Sergio Martino--filmed during a visit to Chicago's historic Music Box Theatre, where he showed two of his most iconic thrillers, Torso and The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh. While recording the intro to that piece, Ian and Bryan spoke at length about meeting Martino, what his films mean to them, and their surprised reaction to the Maestro's own estimation of his reputation as a filmmaker. Your favorite nightmare know-it-alls are back with an "Accademia Giallo" look at The Girl Who Knew Too Much!In Mario Bava's 1963 thriller (also called Evil Eye), a mystery novel-loving American tourist witnesses a murder in Rome, and soon finds herself and her suitor caught up in a series of killings.Widely regarded as the first giallo film, Bava's thriller plants the seeds for a genre that would later explode with lurid sex, graphic killings, and countless pairs of black leather gloves. This comparatively tame but phenomenally engrossing mystery, features great performances, breathtaking cinematography, and a deft balance of horror and humor (without being classified as a "horror-comedy").Ian and the frightful faculty look at how thrillers changed after Girl; discuss the wild differences between the Italian release and the American International Pictures release, and put to rest once and for all Sean Cunningham's claims that Bava's work in no way influenced Friday the 13th!Also, Ian engages in his own life-and-death struggles with his webcam!"Accademia Giallo" is Kicking the Seat's monthly deep dive into Italian Horror's "giallo" sub-genre. After a brief summer vacation, the Accademia Giallo crew returns with a no-laughing-matter look at The House with Laughing Windows! In Pupi Avati's 1976 thriller, Stefano, a young restorer, is commissioned to save a controversial mural located in the church of a small, isolated village. Of course, this synopsis from IMDb leaves out all the tawdry details of the village's history with torture, sex, and murder--but we'll give them an "A" for effort! In today's lesson, your fearsome faculty looks at the many ways in which Laughing Windows breaks the gialli mold, while also expanding the genre's potential in its later stages. It was bound to happen: the latest "Accadmia Giallo" officially becomes a debate class as our fearsome faculty debates Dario Argento's Trauma!Asia Argento stars in this thriller about a young man trying to help a teenage girl find the serial killer who murdered her parents before the killer comes after them. The twisty and twisted 1993 horror movie has long divided Argento fans, and the finer points of the argument are well represented here. Watch as half the class defends the bizarre acting, nonsensical storytelling, and ham-handed "big issues" narrative overlay--while the other half makes a case for these not being staples of the maestro's previous works (at least not to the degree they're cranked up here). As a bonus, we welcome special guest J. Episode 34 of The Film ‘89 Podcast is our biggest episode yet as we dive headlong into an in-depth celebration and analysis of a classic western that's celebrating its 60th anniversary, Howard Hawks' much loved 1959 film, Rio Bravo, starring John Wayne, Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson and Angie Dickinson. We discuss the genesis of the film - a response by Hawks to the 1952 Gary Cooper western, High Noon. We explore the film's themes, discuss its great cast and compare it to other westerns from an era when it was the dominant genre in both film and television. Joining us in this mammoth discussion is author of the brilliant book, Scored To Death: Conversations with some of Horror's Greatest Composers, and host of numerous podcasts including the wonderful Saturday Night Movie Sleepovers, Mr J. Blake Fichera. Also joining us is returning co-host and the newest member of the Film ‘89 writing team, our good friend, John Arminio. But that's not all. As well as westerns we'll be going dark as we discuss our all time favourite horror films in by far our biggest favourites segment so far. So sit back, relax and enjoy this bumper sized episode of your favourite movie and television podcast and please don't forget to leave us an iTunes review.
