Our guest on the podcast this week has worked in fundraising since the year 2000. If you can find a fundraising trainer more passionate and purpose-driven about the sector, we're yet to find them. His business, Brightspot Fundraising, has helped thousands of individuals to unlock their potential in fundraising. Offering a series of expertly constructed courses and programmes we've been huge fans of this guest and his role in the sectors for many years. So much so, that this will be his second appearance on the pod, originally joining us in Dec 2017 in what was our 20th episode. We're pleased to welcome back Rob Woods to the Do More good podcast. ---You can support the show through Patreon and find us on www.domoregood.uk or follow us on Instagram. "You don't operate as a company in a bubble."A high-brow start to the show this week with a mention on PMQs before we dive into CSR, ESG and DB. Then it's Downing Street to Guatemala, making good decisions and learning on the job. We're joined by Kerry McNally, Group Head of Communities at Flutter Entertainment, to talk through what Corporate Social Responsibility or Environment Social and Governance means in the corporate world. Kerry explains how she didn't take a typical career path, mobilising 10,000 people and achieving the dream of exponential impact. We discuss investing in relationships, three-pint focus groups and cringing at puns (but using them anyway). Kenneth ends by penning a litter-based love-letter to Ron before James get's back to Parent's Evening. --You can support the show through Patreon and find us on www.domoregood.uk or follow us on Twitter and Instagram. "If you've done the crime then you do the time."Jimbo delivers a thank you to our Patreon supporter, Jeremy through his new monochrome webcam and Kenneth dreams of a trip to Turkey. Then it's over to our guest Stu to talk about his work fighting modern slavery and the rollercoaster route which got him there. From a Liverpool council estate to a well-intentioned decision which led him into the wrong scene. We talk about intervention, entrepreneurship in the underworld, warehouse robberies and a SIM card worth £250,000. Then we cover societal change, root causes and being at the end of a phone when the time comes.www.wearecauseway.org.uk/criminal-justice/real-life-stories/stus-story/--You can support the show through Patreon and find us on www.domoregood.uk or follow us on Twitter and Instagram. "Organising a Careers Fair to find a job for myself."Tired from the hotel gym, Kenneth lets our guest do the heavy lifting as we discuss the megatrends which have impacted the fundraising environment. Confirmed BDIF, Chris Innes, joins us to talk through the findings from the IFL Forum which immediately preceded the IFC. Expect to tick the permacrisis, AI and the experience economy off your DMG bingo card, as well as confidently dropping a discussion point about truth and opinion into polite conversation later. We also talk through the big issues, including agreeing on the market leaders in flat pasta; the benefits of marrying your modern languages tutor; and how we're in the nice bit of the Artificial Inteligence movie. --You can support the show through Patreon and find us on www.domoregood.uk or follow us on Twitter and Instagram. "Targets, nasty people and shoulder pads"Kenneth has spent all his pocket money in the IFC tuck shop before we meet Helena Sharpstone (the only one on the internet) for a delightful conversation through her career, including her start in sales, an extended honeymoon period in non-profits and why she's investing her own pocket money in chilli plants. Before she reveals how taking an interview for a bet nearly horribly backfired, she talks about healing in the sector, how she finds there's more creativity when there's less resource, people adapting from difficult experiences and the similarities between sales and fundraising. Before closing we get to a far better approach to resilience, valuing your staff, why not everyone makes a good manager and squeeze in James' Annual Review. --You can support the show through Patreon and find us on www.domoregood.uk or follow us on Twitter and Instagram. "We're in revolutionary times"Kenneth and James flashed their access all areas passes to sneak backstage at IFC. They managed to grab a seat in the Press Room for a conversation between two big-hitters, Bill Toliver and Erica Chenoweth before the latter takes to the big stage for their plenary speech. They dive straight in talking people power; revolution; divide and rule; and power relations between our opponents. Erica describes the power of hope and the critical mass for societal change as well as describing their work writing a Phd in violent conflict. There's the power and dangers of digital in movements and surveillance, the ice bucket challenge and the most beautiful mullets of 1983 before Kenneth made a pitch for ‘smartest person in the room' by braving a question at the end (a valiant but doomed effort).--You can support the show through Patreon and find us on www.domoregood.uk or follow us on Twitter and Instagram. "People like their charity workers poor." We head to the bar at the International Fundraising Congress, and the corner marked 'Dull' for a conversation with Peter and Tash from DTV delving deep into the latest film release - Uncharitable. It's a feature-length movie building on Dan Pallotta's TED Talk, you know the one. We begin with dreams of being a film director and starting out roughing it at Goldman Sachs before diving into overheads, CEO pay, marketing, risk appetite and rushing to get a version released to show at IFC. We talk the best plenary sessions ever, differing views on funding and a focus on impact rather than income. We talk media reaction, how to reach policy makers and changing opinions on the high street to defend the sector. If you'd like to see the movie at the upcoming premieres in London and Sydney on Thursday 30th November 2023, then send an email to helloDTV@DTVgroup.co.uk and we'll see you there. --You can support the show through Patreon and find us on www.domoregood.uk or follow us on Twitter and Instagram. We kick this episode off with the revelation that people actually listen before we dive into the International Fundraising Congress 2023. We're breaking down power and mobilising communities; we're segmenting audience data and throwing paper at delegates; we're trimming down the menu, ordering pastries with egg and bribing people into interviews with stickers. There's umbrella metaphors, Bruce Springsteen sets, outrage and hope. There's a frankly heroic late night delivery, polite bathroom etiquette, admitting defeat to our robot overlords and a full body wax. There's a hashtag (#BDIF), a reunion, a Gary Mabbut Wig, a deep dive into AI and a tear-jerking final interview conducted off limits. All this tied up in a Do More Good branded treasury tag. "It's a community coming together"James and Kenneth struggle to contain their excitement around the upcoming International Fundraising Congress, mainly due to the prospect of dressing up as their hometown myths and legends. Fortunately they are joined by CEO of The Resource Alliance, Willeke Van Rijn to bring some sense (and a sense of health and safety) to proceedings. We hear about the young eighteen year old who dreamt of seeing the world and the career which followed, working in a variety of roles and continents before taking the helm at the organisers of the IFC. There's passion, curiosity, pressure and ambition. We talk about the expectations on the event, who to look out for and what not to miss. There's news from backstage, how to make the most of the the experience and ensuring you scoop every spoonful of custard from the jar. LAST CHANCE PROMOTIONIn collaboration with our friends at The Resource Alliance, we are delighted to offer £175 off tickets to the event coming up on the 17th October 2023 for Do More Good listeners. "We don't give enough kudos to fundraisers"To reduce our FOMO from missing the Scottish Fundraising Conference this year we talked to the host of the Awards Ceremony for his thoughts on the sessions, his love of conferences and how he manages not to cry when presenting the oscars. Kenneth talks us through his travel itinerary, James dresses for the occassion and we hear about the pre-recording hype for our guest and his previous appearance from the bar in Glasgow last year. We delve into Gerald's career, thank Gloria for setting him on the path and discuss his move to Scotland from the United States including what he misses from home. Then we have tips for new attendees, a sneak preview of Gerald's session, prepare to meet the CEO of Revlon and get a sneak peak of his outfit for the big night next week. ---You can find us on www.domoregood.uk or follow us on Twitter and Instagram. "If money were no object, I'd have a personal assistant"We're checking in after a couple of great episodes, reflecting on Alex and Karen whilst also sharing a couple of secrets from behind the scenes at Do More Good HQ. We're transported back to car journeys in the eighties by the background music before James makes his second pitch for a ban on tequila. We talk through the big challenge facing Karen at Drinkaware in creating lasting societal change, but perhaps the harder task of Kenneth finding a willing PA. There are thoughts on Alex's specialism being her superpower before we delve into the power of the sticker, gym workouts and social shout-outs in the mailbags. ---You can find us on www.domoregood.uk or follow us on Twitter and Instagram. "Prisons are like a miniature universe" This week we're joined by the CEO of Drinkaware, Karen Tyrell, to talk through her career - from cell rooms to the boardroom. We get into society's complicated relationship with alcohol and managing the organisation's relationship with big business. We kick off this week by revealing the fastest parkruns in the country, braving outdoor swimming and diving into a category A prison straight out of university. Karen shares the stories from the front line which led to a passion for supporting people. We find out what kind of chief executive she is, the importance of a strong foundation and how she plans to achieve massive societal change. James makes an unsuccessful pitch to ban tequila, Karen talks seatbelts and Kenneth wants to know how to remain independent.Pour yourself a low-alcohol beer, if they haven't already sold out, and hear how Drinkaware can improve the school run. ---You can find us on www.domoregood.uk or follow us on Twitter and Instagram. "Everyone doing really well, invests in email"Bringing her Geordie-South-African accent to the show is Alex Fearon, the third sector's email guru. She puts up with some chat about Kenneth's new role and politely doesn't mention that James has come dressed as a 20-year-old pop star before delving into the dark arts of email. We hear about starting out as a freelancer, how to get jobs done now-now, why we should (but don't) ignore the vanity metrics, delegating the jobs we don't like and turning down songs during the rude bits. There's a discussion on where to find nice people, pivoting personal to business accounts and replicating the 2005 PTA Newsletter. Stick an emoji in your subject line, check out dark mode before pressing send, and join us for a chat about the premature suggestion that email is dead. ---You can find us on www.domoregood.uk or follow us on Twitter and Instagram. "Eau du Podcast."The bromance vehicle is back on track with a teaser episode for another run of shows. The boys return to Chapter 72 on Bermondsey Street - face to face for the first time in years. After a recharge of the batteries we cover a Wayne Murray love-in, the death of social media, expensive wrapping paper and a plea for content. We review our appearance on Vic Turnbull's youtube channel, offer prizes and make a solemn promise to share more episodes in the coming weeks before the sugar rush from one too many Appeltisers kicks in. ---You can find us on www.domoregood.uk or follow us on Twitter and Instagram. "We were laying the track in front of the train."It's a hundred days without a drink for Kenneth as he describes ordering tea in the pub and his fears for how this might affect the show.We are joined on this seminal night by Wayne Murray, the founder of Humanity Squared, the aspiring human and father focused on innovation, transformation and human-centred strategy to drive positive change. We talk lived experience, making it up as you go, quitting jobs in lockdown and the longest pier on the world. Wayne shares his passion for getting the experts into the room, one-page strategies and how he refuses to work with arseholes - which sounds like an endorsement for the show.---You can find us on www.domoregood.uk or follow us on Twitter and Instagram. "Just being here tonight is an unbelievable experience”For the hundredth episode we returned to our very first recording - a pub near the JustGiving Awards in 2017. "I am the least likely tech CEO you may come across."Kenneth returns from a Table Tennis training camp for haloween as we dig up the Foreman Family history. Then three guests arrive who have a trick or two and treat us with a talk about mentoring and how it can be used to build confidence. We speak to Dave Evans, the founder and CEO of the social enterprise OKO which is a social enterprise focused on creating opportunities for young adults. He tells us about how his experience growing up formed an aim of providing two million youngsters with mentors. To show how his programme works we also have James and Adarsh to talk through their experiences with OKO, unconventional interview technique, software robotics, getting emotional, getting sacked and top tips for implementing Oracle's advanced procurement suite. ---You can find us on www.domoregood.uk or follow us on Twitter and Instagram. "The younger generation will not accept this."In this episode we talk to Eugenie Harvey, the Chief Executive of The Funding Network, a London-based charity that connects small non-profits and donors. We start with Eugenie's ill-fated comedy career before a parkrun love in and a discussion on Australian bushfires, the usual intro.Eugenie tells us about moving to London and how that involved leaving her friends behind and earning less money. Then there's how she changed the world for a fiver, a famous bag and the power of collective giving. We get a seven-minute pitch, the differences in how we give around the world and an embarrassment about wealth. This week on the podcast we're joined by two guests representing the Raheem Sterling Foundation a charity that envisions a world where young people will always have the support they need in the pursuit of improving their opportunities, their future careers, and their quality of life.We start though, with the genesis of the Kenneth's clothes line and James' eyewear collection. We all look on enviously as we hear about the Foreman household Air Conditioning dynasty before we hear about Clive breaking free from the motor trade and entering the world of fostering and mentoring. There's the importance of a cheese sandwich and we give up on American Football. Chris describes the great 21st birthday hustle, surviving school and the key to job interviews. "Super, crazy-professional, great humans"In the last five years, our guest has lived in mainland Greece, Serbia, and Bosnia and the refugee hotspot of the Greek Island Samos. To date, the organisation she founded has placed over 3,000 volunteers with their partners. Currently, supporting more than fifty charities who provide aid, healthcare, education, skills workshops and other vital services to the tens of thousands of refugees who live in informal settlements across Europe's migratory route.Kenneth admits to hampering the education of a generation of children in Laos whilst James shows off his box-fresh passport. We talk wild swimming and singing competitions before our guest brings her high-risk, impulsive attitude to the conversation. There's a chat about breaking into the sector, accepting help whenever it's offered and controlling workaholic tendencies by simply becoming a parent. We discuss the pattern of support following any large-scale disaster and how important it is for someone to bring order to the chaos. The generosity of those with very little is showcased, we move back in with Mum and manage to fit everything into five minutes before our next meeting. ---You can find us on www.domoregood.uk or follow us on Twitter and Instagram. "Nobody really knows what they're talking about and neither do I." Our guest this week co-founded The Turner Kirk Trust in 2007 and since then has granted over £7million to charitable causes across the UK and the developing world. His achievements include a PhD in General Relativity, chairing numerous businesses and launching the UK's first algo-hedge fund. The perfect match for your host's combined four GCSEs, 400m swimming certificate and a rather vague Culinary Skills badge from Beavers. We kick off with Kenneth's employment reveal, and his plans to go full-time on the podcast between dog walks and the driving range. James wants to spend a million on paper clips and betrays a fondness for tie pins. From then it's all business we meet the self-proclaimed ‘smuggest man in town' fresh from his win at Midnight Madness. He tells us about growing up in an infamous location, a lifetime love of computing and embracing his inner-geek. Kenneth ruthlessly sacks Dan from the Pub Quiz Team live on air, we ponder buying a boat and agree on the concept for a new airport-bookshop business title. There's the importance of good fortune, embracing experimentation and how we face government-sized problems in the third-sector before we discover how to run a hedge fund, form some long-term strategic goals and find that the answer is probably Cat. ---You can find us on www.domoregood.uk or follow us on Twitter and Instagram. "I know you're on holiday, but you need to hear this."Our third episode from the Scottish Fundraising Conference is a sit down with crypto enthusiasts Nicola Gunn and David Mitchell. The duo oversaw a speculative investment before it rained cats and dogs in income from crypto currency communities keen to support their work. We talk about the pressure of headlining the conference, fostering a culture of innovation, the tip-off which sparked their adventure and the rabbithole they delved into on Twitter. There's the knowledge you need to start out, the basics of decentralised finance and how it's still all about relationships. Our guests get excited by NFTs, the possibilities for the future and working in a volatile market whilst James manages not to say anything too stupid for nearly half an hour. ---You can find us on www.domoregood.uk or follow us on Twitter and Instagram. Clara joined a start-up in 2010 and has stewarded the organisation to raise £850m for good causes. We get chatting about her famous friends - Sir Paul and Mr Clooney, no less - and her famous ringtone. There's the honour of kicking off the conference and the beginnings of the Lottery in the UK before the group became the third largest funder globally. There are comparisons with the Netherlands, the power of the brand and finding comfort in change. We talk authenticity, chasing impact and Lamborghinis. "Young people need to see positive pathways."Our dream mentor is the intro subject this week as we reveal more about ourselves than those chosen. Then it's into a chat with Leila Thomas on the organisation she founded and leads to provide young people with the aspirations, opportunity and skills to achieve their career goals. James imagines dragging the team up on stage to pick up an award, meanwhile Kenneth picks a tattoo and our guest dreams of an army of volunteers to support her. There's positive pathways, underrepresentation in the corporate sector and overrepresentation on TV. We talk about a solution-focused approach, taking action and the skills of reverse mentoring. There's the enjoyment of seeing people connect over a shared passion, demystifying the workplace and networking. Kenneth's golfing prowess is questioned, the show gets a glowing endorsement and we prepare to parent teenagers.---You can find us on www.domoregood.uk or follow us on Twitter and Instagram. "Care, but don't worry"We start this episode with unfulfilled dreams and unpublished logos. Kenneth picks up a role with the Newcastle Tourist Board whereas James is living out his Olympic dreams. Then it's over to Work for Good CEO, and closet McFly fan, Veronica Bamford-Deane to sell us sales fundraising. She admits to ambitions of living a life of leisure before a drive to do good led to a flirtation with over-working. There's the rollercoaster of life in a start-up, surrounding yourself with good people and being up front in interviews. We've got culture, happy hours and a solution-focused approach plus the huge potential in small businesses and entrepreneurs. If that wasn't enough - tech, co-working spaces, the wisdom of our elders and Dane Bowers also get a mention before we sign off.---You can find us on www.domoregood.uk or follow us on Twitter and Instagram. We talk about monetising cat gifs, the dawn of data analytics and timing your Phil Collins drum solo to perfection.James tells us about renting elf suits, working in the Death Star, realising the potential for digital channels and stepping into the big leagues at CRUK. B-Corps get another glowing endorsement as does the importance of networking (and how much easier it is these days). We hear how James goes about recruitment, improving the process and how he wouldn't sell toothpaste for a living. All of which leaves us just enough time to talk through Jill's trust issues, user-testing and prioritising supporter insight before our cultured guest leaves for the theatre.www.starofgreenwich.co.uk---You can find us on www.domoregood.uk or follow us on Twitter and Instagram. "Love was the thing that would change the course of the AIDS epidemic."We start with the comparison of two back catalogues before introducing our guest, the CEO of the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Anne Aslett tells us how she started as a volunteer with a bold idea for a new fundraising venture before spending twenty years with the organisation and becoming CEO of the Foundation which has saved the lives of over five million of the most marginalised people in the world. We talk problem-solving, imposter syndrome and two moments which had a profound impact on Anne's life. There's unconventional innovation programmes, fighting stigma and promoting testing. There's a brief comparison of to-do lists, working collaboratively and who to ask for the quickest route to Oxford Circus. "Don't get angry, get organised."He might be the Deputy General Secretary and Director of Communications and Research at Prospect, he may have been President of the NUS. he might be a trustee of Stonewall and may be a non-executive director at one of the UK's largest community housing associations, you might even find him on Newsnight and ‘Reasons to be Cheerful', but it's his prestigious position as Head of PR for the British Kebab Awards which is what Kenneth and James really want to hear about. Indeed, it's the world's most expensive kebab which our guest Andrew Pakes graciously opens with, before we get into finding your tribe, bringing people together, the influence of family and campaigning for change. We talk good communications, the essence of flexible working and the death of the office. We embrace work, rest and play, gifting your employers and inviting your boss for dinner before we get a tour of Kenneth's library and hear how James is on the run from Jane. ---You can find us on www.domoregood.uk or follow us on Twitter and Instagram. “When we are young we play to win. When we're older we play not to lose. ”This week starts with tales of crashed cars and car-crash fashion choices before we are joined by a pair who lived life in the fast lane. Our guests are a husband and wife team who have successfully transitioned their once corporate careers to now work with people in their mid-life to support their health and wellbeing following their own passion for this area.Claire and James talk to us about their move from being well-known in nightclubs to growing disillusioned with the corporate world and seeking more from life. They discuss a fear of failure, understanding life by looking backwards and going back to minimum wage to find what they were after. There are the common themes which come up time and again in mid-life, setting personal goals and including wellbeing in corporate responsibility. "Is the UK a fair and free place to live? The answer is no."We are joined by Helen Moulinos for this episode - a knowledgeable, passionate human rights expert and stir-fry aficionado. After growing up in the States she moved to the UK and now leads POhWER, the UK's largest advocacy charity which upholds and protects the human rights of marginalised, vulnerable and excluded groups. We start the episode discussing how Kenneth and James have been given the keys to the social accounts but their rebellious posting activity pales into insignificance as Helen describes growing up with a crowd of angry New Yorkers. There's her failure to break into the charity sector and having to make do with a lucrative job in banking, moonlighting as an activist by night and risking her career. This proved a great grounding for a switch later in life and finding a position which totally fulfils. There's being kind to yourself and your colleagues, standing up for people and focussing on results. We go on holiday by ourselves, watch horror movies and get emotional about the greatest love of our careers. ---You can find us on www.domoregood.uk or follow us on Twitter and Instagram. Then we're straight in to promoting club nights, creating opportunities for young people and passing on culture to the next generation. We discuss finding opportunity after university, understanding what opportunity looks like and still holding a torch for the Spice Girls. There's time for the challenges of homelessness, stealing the members from Soho House and the power of a membership to make a difference before Carl Cox takes to the stage at the Fenstanton Social Club.---You can find us on www.domoregood.uk or follow us on Twitter and Instagram. "This is everything a business should be." Ben Greensmith, or Lord Chocolonely III as he's known at work, is responsible for the sixth largest chocolate bar brand in the UK - Tony's Chocolonely - and their mission to make chocolate free of child-labour and slavery (spoiler alert - not all confectionary brands adopt this approach). He talks to the boys about his journey , the epiphany on a trip to the Netherlands which led him to join Tony's and working with the best minds in the business at Innocent Drinks. We discuss fancy dress, purpose, making an impact and the treats Kenneth's mother-in-law smuggles down south for him. There's dealing with life, losing a close fight with a bouncer and make the comparison between how we view mental and physical health. We all cry at adverts, make the commitment to embrace the process and use cheap laughs to encourage everyone to get along. Jake talks us through his own experiences of mental health, how he hid the truth from his friends and family before launching the charity which helps thousands of people every month to find the support they need.---You can find us on www.domoregood.uk or follow us on Twitter and Instagram. The former consultant, special adviser and Strategy Director at the FA began his new role in early 2020, deciding how to best invest in the grassroots game with funding from the government, the Football Association and the Premier League. Robert describes how his career took him from funder to investor, in the biggest transfer of the week. We talk alignment of strategy, crafting the perfect CV, power, relationships and influence. Jonny Benjamin was the star of an iconic mental health campaign, #FindMike - to reconnect with the man who had talked him out of jumping from a bridge in London six years earlier. We start with James making the case to ban ice skating and Kenneth admitting to some overzealous celebrating on the sidelines. Then there's how veganism sparked curiosity and a passion, then the confidence to pursue a path towards making an impact. We talk about the boring charity sector, how we're all getting woke and the skill of the master networkers. From there we're on to the ultimate VIP Club for purposeful brands, acquiring B-Corp status and the benefits it brings. "It's a heart not a head thing."We like to delve into careers at the Do More Good podcast and this one is packed. From a childhood on the road to encouraging more women into politics, years spent in the Dalai Lama's Tibetan community and working at the Jo Cox Foundation. Catherine Anderson is the Executive Director of the London Marathon Charitable Trust and joins us with her story. We start with the revelation that James can't make a tea, Kenneth loves diving in at the deep end and the calling of public service. Catherine describes her nomadic childhood and the skills it gave her. We talk leadership training, the lack of any and why it's important to try.Catherine tells us about breaking down the barriers of other's privilege, whilst also recognising your own. She encourages us to thank our MPs, realise that nothing is permanent and describes how she always follows her heart - especially when you simply have to visit a literary festival in south-east Asia because it's the right thing to do.Edit: We're delighted to report that since recording Catherine has now broken the 25 minute barrier.---You can find us on www.domoregood.uk or follow us on Twitter and Instagram. "You don't need money, you need ideas."We've rolled out the red carpet for Tom Lemons this week, the head of the Talent & Influencer team at the NSPCC, responsible for winning and managing award winning high profile partnerships for the charity.Tom tells us how a stint working at the Big Issue Magazine, helping to save it from closure, sparked a passion for the third sector and led to his move to (according to Kenneth) the ‘most glamorous role in charity'. He now rubs shoulders with the likes of Geri Horner and Wayne Rooney, not to mention opening pop up shops for Harrods. We discuss the key skills required, why you don't need a little black book and the importance of relationships. We have terrible chat up lines, 90s TV queens and how Kenneth became best mates with Wesley Snipes. There's the similarities with corporate partnerships, dealing with agents and celebrity top trumps, plus learning the marketing mix, the move to an influencer model and the most important (and lucrative) phone call of Tom's career. ---You can find us on www.domoregood.uk or follow us on Twitter and Instagram.
