Today's guest hosts are Edwith Theogene and Charlotte Hancock, Organizing Director and Communications Director for Generation Progress. They discuss how voting rights protections are desperately needed to protect the integrity of our democracy. The situation continues to get more and more precarious—according to data from the Brennan Center at least 19 states passed 34 laws restricting access to voting in 2021, and even more bills are waiting in the wings: more than 440 bills with provisions that restrict voting access were introduced in 49 states in the 2021 legislative sessions. Meanwhile, Congress has struggled to pass desperately needed federal voting rights protections over the past year. Thankfully, Senator Schumer and President Biden have indicated repeatedly that voting rights protections are a main priority for them, and the Senate has dedicated much of its attention in 2022 thus far to passing the Freedom to Vote Act. With a self-imposed deadline of Monday, January 17th—Martin Luther King Day—activists and organizers across the country are calling on the Senate to get the job done now. To talk more about the Freedom to Vote Act, actions being taken in the lead up to MLK Day, and how voting rights reform could impact the upcoming 2022 midterm elections, they're joined by two expert guests. Today's guest hosts are Charlotte Hancock and Emily Leach, Communications Director and Communications Manager for Generation Progress. This year has been an extremely significant one for all Americans, and especially for young people. After starting the year on a terrible note with the Capitol insurrection, we soon saw a new administration take office and the balance of power in Congress shift, marking a new chapter of legislative possibilities. In Congress, a good portion of the year has been spent considering and revising a core element of President Biden's agenda, now known as the 'Build Back Better Act.' The landmark legislation has been passed by the House of Representatives and is now being considered by the Senate. This bill would have a significant impact on many of the core issues that matter to younger generations, and would represent a huge legislative accomplishment for the administration and Congress. To talk with Edwith and Emily more about wins for young people in 2021, what's next for the 'Build Back Better Act,' and what they hope to see happen in 2022, they're joined by three expert guests. From October 31st to November 16th, world leaders, climate policy experts, and advocates gathered in Glasgow, Scotland for the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference to confront the global threat that the climate crisis presents and continue to work to chart a path forward. With so many priorities and perspectives represented at one event, there were a lot of differing thoughts presented on the best way to confront this problem, and some activists—particularly young activists—were vocal in their belief that the conference's approach to addressing the climate crisis is insufficient and does not match the scope and urgency of the issue. Meanwhile, in the U.S., progress has been made on both the bipartisan infrastructure bill and the 'Build Back Better Act', which each contain provisions to combat the climate crisis. Today's guest hosts are Brent J. Cohen and Charlotte Hancock, Executive Director and Communications Director for Generation Progress. Young people, particularly young Black men, are disproportionately affected by the U.S. gun violence epidemic. Despite an awareness of the problem and deep-seated support across party lines for gun violence prevention solutions, the problem continues to grow: over 40 thousand Americans were killed by guns in 2020 alone. Passing gun violence prevention legislation at the federal level has been extremely difficult, in part, as a result of massive political and financial pressure from the gun lobby. But, in one promising development, the most recent framework for the 'Build Back Better Act' now includes a five billion dollar investment in community violence intervention, which is a solution that activists who focus on addressing the root causes of gun violence have long called for. To talk more with Brent and Charlotte about the root causes of gun violence, the Build Back Better Act, and what comes next in reducing easy access to guns, they're joined by two expert guests. Today's guest hosts are Edwith Theogene and Charlotte Hancock, Organizing Director and Communications Director for Generation Progress. They discuss how over 43 million Americans currently have student loan debt, and young people are disproportionately likely to be included in that group. Younger generations are deeply invested in ending this crisis, as student debt is holding them back from the financial security they need to buy homes, start and provide for families, and save for retirement. But in order to end the student debt crisis for good, America needs to do more than cancel existing debt—we also need to prevent future student loan debt by addressing the college affordability crisis. One way to do that is by passing legislation for free or debt-free college. We've seen several bills introduced in Congress already and a free community college provision was included in President Biden's America College Promise plan, but we have yet to see any of these proposals become law. To talk more about the fight for debt-free college, and why college affordability and student debt solutions are two sides of the same coin, Edwith and Charlotte are joined by two expert guests. His show, 'Deadline D.C. with Brad Bannon,' airs every Monday from 3-4pm ET. As Demlist's Kimberly Scott puts it, the report "reveals how the political parties, and most particularly Democrats, have missed "the biggest electoral earthquake of the last decade" in discounting the significance of a key demographic -- manufacturing-heavy, working-class towns. The study, produced by American Family Voices and 21st Century Democrats, debunks, in-depth, the conventional premise that there are only three kinds of political turf that matter: the big cities, which are Democratic; rural America, which is Republican; and the suburbs, which is where most of the swing voters are, and therefore where the parties should spend most of their time. That approach neglects a newly defined, yet long overlooked subset of the American electorate: the Factory Towns. They are the manufacturing-heavy, working-class towns that are not part of huge urban areas, but are not farming-dominated rural counties either. The Factory Towns Report looks at 853 counties in 10 different Midwest and Great Lakes states, which have lost 1.3 million manufacturing jobs since the beginning of this century -- a decline that has been most damaging to Democrats." During the second half of the show, Brad leads a political roundtable with Edwith Theogene and Mark Grimaldi. The roundtable discusses Senator Joe Manchin's demands that a key climate provision be dropped from the Senate Democrats infrastructure reconciliation package in order to gain his support for the bill. Today's guest hosts are Brent J. Cohen and Edwith Theogene, Executive Director and Organizing Director for Generation Progress. They discuss how Congress has had an extremely busy past few weeks, with Democrats in the House and Senate working to pass a few bills of great importance to the country and President Biden's Build Back Better agenda. The budget reconciliation bill—which contains many programs and policy solutions from that agenda—is also something that many in the immigration policy and advocacy spaces have been working on in the hope of securing protections for undocumented people living and working in the U.S. While these efforts have encountered some roadblocks thus far, there is still hope of progress being made on that front—both as part of that bill and beyond. To talk more with Brent and Edwith about efforts to protect undocumented people in the U.S. in recent and coming months, and how people can get involved, they're joined by two expert guests. Today's guest hosts are Edwith Theogene and Emily Leach, Organizing Director and Communications Manager for Generation Progress. They've discussed voting rights a lot on this show over the past year—states across the country have introduced and passed restrictive voting laws that threaten to reduce participation in democracy and meanwhile advocates have pushed Congress to pass federal legislation protecting voting rights. Two of those bills, the For The People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, have now been passed by the House of Representatives and now face a decision in the Senate. The For The People Act has already met considerable opposition at the Senate level, but Majority Leader Schumer has indicated that passing that bill and the Voting Rights Advancement Act will be priorities once the Senate returns from recess in September. Despite the fact that moving this legislation forward has been slow work, advocates are working harder than ever to make sure that voting rights are protected, and in many ways the momentum behind this movement is only building. This Saturday (August 28th), many people will be marching in Washington, D.C. and other cities across the country to demand action to protect voting rights as part of the March On For Voting Rights. To talk with Edwith and Emily more about this march, the role that young people play in the voting rights movement, and how people can get involved, they're joined by two expert guests: Yasmine Guedalia, the March On for Voting Rights National Partnerships Coordinator with the Future Coalition, and Azalea Danes, the Director of Communications for the Future Project. Last year—a year that saw many Americans struggling with loss of family and friends, life-altering illness, and economic crises due to the COVID-19 pandemic—was also the deadliest year for gun violence for decades, according to the Washington Post. And this year is looking even worse. Thus far in 2021, gun violence killed more than 8,100 people in the United States. Since gun violence can take many different forms—from domestic violence to mass shootings to police violence—we also need solutions to gun violence to be multilayered and multifaceted. Although progress has been made in spreading awareness of the crisis and the harms perpetrated by the gun industry, it has remained extremely difficult to make significant progress to end the gun violence epidemic at the federal level—despite the fact that a majority of Americans support legislative reforms to prevent gun violence. To discuss what the takeaways from this gun violence awareness month should be and how people can get involved in addressing this epidemic moving forward, Edwith and Charlotte are joined by two expert guests.  They are Bella D'Alacio, Federal Policy Associate for "March for Our Lives" and Greg Jackson, National Advocacy Director for the Community Justice Action Fund (CJAF). The American Families Plan proposed by the Biden-Harris administration would also make public community colleges free for students, and provide two years of subsidized tuition at HBCUs, TCUs, and MSIs. Today's guest hosts are Brent J. Cohen and Charlotte Hancock, Executive Director and Communications Director for Generation Progress. They discuss the intersection between two core issues impacting women and people who can become pregnant—abortion bans and economic injustice. At Generation Progress, they apply a reproductive justice framework (a term coined by a group of Black women in 1994) to all of the issues that they work on, understanding that the freedom to decide if, when, and how to have children is inextricably linked to issues like climate change, criminal justice reform, and immigration. Recently, their team has been working on a campaign to illustrate the connections between the need for access to abortion to the need to end the student debt crisis, both of which disproportionately impact women. Over the past year in the U.S., as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Americans have experienced an economic recession that has hit women and people of color the hardest. Adding that on top of the student debt crisis, which also disproportionately impacts women and people of color, and an uptick in attempts to restrict or deny access to abortion—it’s clear that reproductive and economic freedom are in jeopardy for women and people who can become pregnant. To talk with Brent and Charlotte about the intersection between reproductive freedom and economic stability further, they’re joined by two expert guests. They are Ravina Daphtary, the abortion coverage campaign co-director at All* Above All, and Robin Bleiweis, a research associate focused on women’s economic security at the Center for American Progress.
