In this season premiere, Em and the Packbats set themselves a challenge: create a prologue to a YA creature horror story by first writing and then playing a new mini roleplaying game. Something is in this abandoned mine, and it has just been awoken. Content warnings on the game part of the episode: body horror, allusion to retching, implied death by suffocation, and mention of bugs. This podcast is hosted and produced by Em (if you know them, you can reach out!) and the Packbats ( https://www.patreon.com/packbat , https://packbat.itch.io/ ), who collaboratively designed the game below. The theme music for this episode was produced by the Packbats in LMMS and includes samples sourced from the Vintage Dreams Waves v2.0 soundfont by Ian Wilson https://musical-artifacts.com/artifacts/248 and the 2MGM soundfont by Yingchun Soul https://musical-artifacts.com/artifacts/1425 . First, describe the situation, establishing the scene around the mine entrance and the route the geocacher travels trying to escape. Plan out the key points for each turn - jumping a fence, starting up a hill, catching a glimpse of their car, moments like that which can function as prompts for the descriptions that come later. There should be enough that, after adding in the ending, each player will get an equal number of card draws and the scene will last an appropriately dramatic length of time. Also, shuffle your deck of cards. The game starts with one player describing the geocacher fleeing out the entrance of the mine. From there, players take turns drawing cards and adding to the scene with: a hint of the monster, based on the prompt associated with the card; and the next piece of description of the geocacher fleeing. Be careful of each others' limits - this is a horror game, you don't want to accidentally cross lines - but being mindful of that constraint, be vivid with your descriptions. Do not reveal or establish too much about the monster, however. The game ends with the first player drawing their last card, from which they describe the geocacher being caught with one final hint of the monster. prompt grid: hearts = sight diamonds = sound clubs = touch spades = smell 2 = pick your own 3 = wet 4 = angular 5 = scratchy 6 = fresh 7 = vivid 8 = crackly 9 = animalistic 10 = soapy J = metamorphizing Q = stretchy K = dusty A = deep -- This episode was made as part of the One Mic Stand Podcast Jam! After the con recap, Grant plugs his wife Krissi and her appearances on the Gameable Saturday Morning Podcast to talk about Jem and the Holograms (Episode 45 for introduction and plot recaps, and Episode 46 for plot, setting, and character breakdowns.) He also discusses his 200 Word RPG Challenge entry (which can be read here.) This episode, we manage the unthinkable and actually get our quarterly Patreon-selected topic in before the last possible episode! It's a whole new world, folks. We open up the show by talking a little bit about our assorted podcats, the 200 Word RPG Challenge, Pilates, and a couple of other minor things. Then we move on to a pretty heavy question from Patreon backer Paige: How to memorialize a player in your gaming group after they pass. (We also recommend Fear the Boot's recent bonus episode on this same question.) After our Scripture readings, we delve into an equally dense topic: Resurrection in our games. Naturally, we start by contrasting the forms of resurrection 'magic' (or technology or what have you) we see in our games with the resurrection of Christ and the promise of resurrection offered through Him. (This leads to an interesting digression about confessions and creeds, and we're not at all sorry about it.) Then we throw out all sorts of possible complications with resurrection magic, and find hooks in them to hang stories and games on. Enjoy! Scripture: Isaiah 26:19, John 11:38-44, 1 Corinthians 15:35-44

Recorded on 4/22/2017The meatbags hear the machine's plot to besmirch and slander various contests and crowdfunded games. In the weekly gaming recap, Wednesday's public game switches to Thursday and takes a week off of RPGs to play the deckbuilding boardgame Clank! by Renegade Game Studios and Friday's 7th Sea game covers the descriptions and backgrounds of our individual characters as they fail at tackling the initial challenge of coming together as a group. We discuss the 200 Word RPG Challenge and all it entails. A few handpicked projects include a heavy metal magic word game, a tarot dungeon crawl card game that's as dry as the Gobi Desert, an ill-summarized fantasy Communist dystopia RPG, and a game that is very much not Delta Green.Bill's book report this week is on Ars Magica 5th Edition by Atlas Games. The summary starts off confusing but Bill sells us the game with the simple line "Medieval Fantasy Rogue Trader."Various skullduggery includes Bill introducing a contest for the Clown Baby Award, a prize that represents the silliest, goofiest, and/or strangest encounters we've had in gaming and Mike D names as many magicians as he can before time runs out.

EPISODE 19 In this episode we abandon the traditional format of the show to play a mini-tabletop RPG called MECHANICAL ORYX (by one Grant Howitt), winner of the 2017 200-Word RPG Challenge. Join Oxy (Kate) and Gilgamesh (Jack; no relation to the actual Gilgamesh) and Omniscient Impartial Narrator (Hao) as they journey through the ruins of a once-great Earth. This episode of Downers is brought to you by random.org. Warning: This episode contains a light amount of body-shaming humor, but it is done in character and the emotional reactions it provokes are both sincere and honest. Also, at one point Kate reference-snipes Beyonce's Lemonade; it's great and it's my fault I didn't pick up on it.     @downersradio on Twitter | downersradio@gmail.com on STMP | downersradio.libsyn.com on HTTP | #cluffx
