SEASON 2 - EPISODE 139 - Camera Movement - with Tom Cross & Ed Lachman In this special episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, editor Tom Cross (Season 1, Episodes 129 & 139) and cinematographer Ed Lachman (Season 1, Episode 77 & Season 2, Episode 132) return to join us in a discussion about camera movement. From Douglas Sirk's sweeping camera moves to Robert Bresson's measured stillness, the four of us bring up examples of when camera movement (or its lack thereof) affects us, and we discuss why we believe choosing when and how to move the camera all comes down to what feels emotionally right for the story. When our conversation inevitably turns to 1917, we reflect on the variety of camera moves within the “single shot” of the film, and we discuss how the contrast of a camera move that diverges from a film's established language can more appropriately express character and a beat within the story. Ed also shares the unique method of filming practiced by studio era director George Stevens, and Tom reveals how he and director Damien Chazelle (Season 2, Episode 23) restitched the roaming camera move of the opening musical number in LA LA LAND. Throughout the episode, we draw on our own experiences as filmmakers and from our observations on a myriad of films across film history, and the conversation evolves to cover the relationship between editing and cinematography. A big thank you to Ed and Tom for coming back to talk with us! - This episode is sponsored by Aputure & Profoto

ACL injuries result in significant time away from sport and distress for patients. The variety of management options, from surgical intervention to non-surgical management and rehabilitation protocols, often makes us uncertain when educating and helping patients choose the most appropriate care for their needs and goals. Recently, a pioneering non-operative ACL injury management pathway called the “Cross bracing protocol” has been pioneered and developed by Dr Tom Cross and Tom's father (the late Orthopaedic surgeon) Dr Merv Cross. This protocol offers a promising alternative for patients with ACL injuries who are suitable for non-surgical intervention, where the ACL injury may heal or repair itself. Not all patients with an ACL injury are suitable for the Cross bracing protocol or non-surgical management, so how can you identify whether your patient is suitable, and which treatment options are best for each patient? In this insightful podcast episode, we discuss the complex challenge of ACL injury management and Cross bracing with Clare Walsh (Specialist Sports & Exercise Physiotherapist, FACP). Clare treats a lot of patients with ACL injuries with prehabilitation, post-op rehabilitation, or non-surgical management including Cross bracing. Clare works alongside Dr Tom Cross and other Sports Medicine Doctors, Orthopaedic surgeons (including the late Dr Merv Cross) and leading Sports Physiotherapists at Stadium Sports Physiotherapy and The Stadium Clinic. Clare teaches on the Cross bracing course conducted in Australia for Physiotherapists and health professionals, and is a Senior Educator & Presenter here at Clinical Edge. In this podcast we explore: Cross bracing What it is and how it developed. What research has been performed to date, and what it shows about the chances of ACL healing with the Cross bracing protocol. Assessment tests & specific imaging that are used to assess patient suitability. Why patients might opt for Cross bracing rather than surgery. Who isn't suitable for Cross bracing. Potential negative outcomes of Cross bracing. Which patients are more likely to be suitable and successful with Cross bracing - eg. injury type, age, level of sport, goals, psychosocial factors. Medical factors that impact suitability. Psychosocial factors that impact whether a patient can undergo the protocol. Which leg (right or left) is better suited to bracing and why. Which type of braces are commonly used. How soon the protocol needs to commence after injury to be successful. Which concomitant injuries can still heal in a brace and which need surgery e.g. meniscus injuries, bucket handle tears of the meniscus, MCL tears. How long patients remain in a brace. Exercises and activities that can and should be performed throughout Cross bracing. How patients can move or walk around throughout the Cross bracing period. How Cross bracing has changed and evolved. Whether the ACL is at increased risk of re-rupture following the protocol. Essential medical management during the protocol. Whether therapists can put a patient in a brace, or manage the protocol independently. What to you do if you think a patient may be suitable for Cross bracing. How to refer patients for Cross bracing Followup imaging at the end of the protocol. Functional assessment tests used at the end of the protocol. Return to training (RTT) and return to play (RTP) following the protocol. Which patients require surgery instead of conservative management. Early surgery vs delayed surgery. Spontaneous ACL healing - what the research says. How to use patient-centred decision-making to guide patients into the most suitable recovery pathway - surgery, bracing or non-surgical management. Case studies and comparisons of patients that underwent either Cross bracing or ACL reconstruction. This podcast is packed full of great information on this emerging ACL injury treatment. You'll finish this podcast with a deeper understanding of ACL injury management and Cross bracing plus practical knowledge, solutions and insights you can apply into your practice. Save Your Soul. follows Trinitie Childs (Regina Hall), the first lady of a prominent Southern Baptist Mega Church, as she attempts to help her pastor-husband, Lee-Curtis Childs (Sterling K. Brown), rebuild their congregation after a scandal. Adamma shares how a visit from writer-director Damien Chazelle and editor Tom Cross during her time at UCLA influenced her decision to film a short as a proof of concept for the feature: "...they talked about how they made Whiplash as a short as a proof of concept, because in actuality, the movie is a thriller about jazz musicians, and you're like, 'What does that mean?' It's easier to show than tell... I knew it was going to be a pretty tough elevator pitch, and so I was like, 'I need to make something to show for it.'" Adamma's sister, Adanne Ebo, serves as a producer on the film; when asked what advice she would give to aspiring writers from a producer's perspective, she said, "Read as many scripts as you can. I didn't go to film school… I learned how to write just by working with Adamma... even if you don't go to school for it, even if you don't go about it the institutional type of way, reading scripts will always make you a better writer." Minari is a semi-autobiographical take on Chung's upbringing and tells the story a family of South Korean immigrants who try to make it in rural America during the 1980s.  Jacob Yi, the father played by Steven Yeun, dreams of a better life for himself and his family than just working as a chicken sexer, so he moves his wife and two young children from California to Arkansas to make that dream a reality.  As you would imagine, they face a few challenges following that dream and those challenges and how the Yi family meets them, is what makes the film so captivating.  On top of that, the performances across the board are just fantastic. Minari had its world premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, winning both the U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and the U.S. Dramatic Audience Award.  Not only that It was named one of the ten best films of 2020 by the American Film Institute and the National Board of Review.  Not too shabby. We first caught up with Harry when he was working alongside editor Tom Cross on the Damien Chazelle film, First Man.  It was obvious then that Harry was someone to watch and there were big moments ahead for him.  Minari is, without question, a big moment for Harry. Editing Minari In our discussion with Minari editor, Harry Yoon ACE we talk about: Getting ready for Sundance and the experience of having a hit film there Editing a film largely spoken in Korean, but working with a script written in English His working relationship with writer/director Lee Isaac Chung Operating under a tight budget but on a film you believe in The freedom great performances give you to stay with wide shots The Credits Visit ExtremeMusic for all your production audio needs See the latest Special Offers for Avid Media Composer and Media Composer Ultimate Learn Avid for free with Media Composer | First Subscribe to The Rough Cut podcast and never miss an episode Visit The Rough Cut on YouTube

Tom Cross aka Decius CTO, Drawbridge Networks Collin Anderson Independent Researcher At the end of 2013, an international export control regime known as the Wassenaar Arrangement was updated to include controls on technology related to “Intrusion Software" and “IP Network Surveillance Systems." Earlier this year, the US Government announced a draft interpretation of these new controls, which has kicked off a firestorm of controversy within the information security community. Questions abound regarding what the exact scope of the proposed rules is, and what impact the rules might have on security researchers. Is it now illegal to share exploit code across borders, or to disclose a vulnerability to a software vendor in another country? Can export controls really keep surveillance technology developed in the west out of the hands of repressive regimes? This presentation will provide a deep dive on the text of the new controls and discuss what they are meant to cover, how the US Government has indicated that it may interpret them, and what those interpretations potentially mean for computer security researchers, and for the Internet as a whole. Tom Cross is the CTO of Drawbridge Networks. He is credited with discovering a number of critical security vulnerabilities in enterprise class software and has written papers on collateral damage in cyber conflict, vulnerability disclosure ethics, security issues in internet routers, encrypting open wireless networks, and protecting Wikipedia from vandalism. Tom was previously Director of Security Research at Lancope, and Manager of the IBM Internet Security Systems X-Force Advanced Research team. He has spoken at numerous security conferences, including DEF CON, Blackhat Briefings, CyCon, HOPE, Source Boston, FIRST, and Security B-Sides. Twitter: @_decius_ Collin Anderson is a Washington D.C.-based researcher focused on measurement and control of the Internet, including network ownership and access restrictions, with an emphasis on countries that restrict the free flow of information. Through open research and cross-organizational collaboration, these efforts have included monitoring the international sale of surveillance equipment, identifying consumer harm in disputes between core network operators, exploring alternative means of communications that bypass normal channels of control, and applying big data to shed new light on increasingly sophisticated restrictions by repressive governments. These involvements extend into the role of public policy toward promoting online expression and accountability, including regulation of the sale of surveillance technologies and reduction of online barriers to the public of countries under sanctions restrictions.
