LIGHTSPEED MAGAZINE - Science Fiction and Fantasy Story Podcast (Sci-Fi | Audiobook | Short Stories)

We've never been so busy. The cave where we work used to be calm and, if not entirely devoid of sound, then split only by the crash of waves at high tide and the occasional cry of a woman who didn't listen when we said listen this will hurt this will hurt this will hurt. Or maybe she did listen, but she thought we meant physical pain, when what we meant was your heart your heart your heart. | © 2024 by Shanna Germain. Read by Stefan Rudnicki. In this season premiere, Em and the Packbats set themselves a challenge: create a prologue to a YA creature horror story by first writing and then playing a new mini roleplaying game. Something is in this abandoned mine, and it has just been awoken. Content warnings on the game part of the episode: body horror, allusion to retching, implied death by suffocation, and mention of bugs. This podcast is hosted and produced by Em (if you know them, you can reach out!) and the Packbats ( https://www.patreon.com/packbat , https://packbat.itch.io/ ), who collaboratively designed the game below. The theme music for this episode was produced by the Packbats in LMMS and includes samples sourced from the Vintage Dreams Waves v2.0 soundfont by Ian Wilson https://musical-artifacts.com/artifacts/248 and the 2MGM soundfont by Yingchun Soul https://musical-artifacts.com/artifacts/1425 . First, describe the situation, establishing the scene around the mine entrance and the route the geocacher travels trying to escape. Plan out the key points for each turn - jumping a fence, starting up a hill, catching a glimpse of their car, moments like that which can function as prompts for the descriptions that come later. There should be enough that, after adding in the ending, each player will get an equal number of card draws and the scene will last an appropriately dramatic length of time. Also, shuffle your deck of cards. The game starts with one player describing the geocacher fleeing out the entrance of the mine. From there, players take turns drawing cards and adding to the scene with: a hint of the monster, based on the prompt associated with the card; and the next piece of description of the geocacher fleeing. Be careful of each others' limits - this is a horror game, you don't want to accidentally cross lines - but being mindful of that constraint, be vivid with your descriptions. Do not reveal or establish too much about the monster, however. The game ends with the first player drawing their last card, from which they describe the geocacher being caught with one final hint of the monster. prompt grid: hearts = sight diamonds = sound clubs = touch spades = smell 2 = pick your own 3 = wet 4 = angular 5 = scratchy 6 = fresh 7 = vivid 8 = crackly 9 = animalistic 10 = soapy J = metamorphizing Q = stretchy K = dusty A = deep -- This episode was made as part of the One Mic Stand Podcast Jam! On ep 109 we explore the parallels between the kink and gaming cultures with Shanna Germain. It turns out these groups can learn a lot from each other-- especially along the lines of negotiation, consent, and aftercare. Shanna is doing her part to facilitate consent in RPGs (role-playing games) and offers a free resource for gamers. On the same token, those in the BDSM world can expand their horizons by embracing the spirit of play and roleplay gaming principles. We talk about misogyny in the gaming world and what’s being done to create room for diversity plus Shanna gives tips and guidelines to gamers that want to consensually include more adult themes in their games as well as for sex-positive folks that want to give gaming a try. She also talks about authoring many fantasy erotica books and we learn about ‘cozy games’ that facilitate emotional intimacy, vulnerability and sexy times between consenting adults.   Submit your BDSM & sex advice questions by email to americansexpodcast@gmail.com To support American Sex podcast, please visit patreon.com/americansex (plus you’ll get all episodes early, secret episodes, bonus stories from guests, on-air shout-outs, stuff in the mail & more!) Consent in #Gaming is a new free product from Monte Cook Games about the need to have consensual content and interaction in roleplaying games. This is my review. This podcast has been produced for www.gmsmagazine.com. Please help us by subscribing to the channel and liking/commenting on the videos. #MonteCookGames has a enormous history of writing fantastic #RPG content. Now, Sean K. Reynolds and Shanna Germain have produced a 13 pages #pdf guide about the topic of consent around the gaming table. As can be expected, it has created a fair amount of controversy, so I decided to take a look and record this #review. I have to say, I know #seankreynolds and #shannahgermain, so my view is a bit biased, but the quality of this book and the importance of the content are undeniable. Morrus and Peter are still off for the holiday break, so here is an older interview Morrus did at UK Games Expo in 2014 with Monte Cook and Shanna Germain! Monte Cook worked on D&D for TSR back in the 1990s, and continued working there as the company was bought by WotC, and then by Hasbro. He founded Malhavoc Press, and later co-founded Monte Cook Games with Shanna Germain. This is a long-form interview, covering a wide range of subjects. Monte talks about working at WotC on D&D (twice!), and both he and Shanna talk about Monte Cook Games, creating Numenera, Kickstarters, and more. Apologies for the audio quality; this was recorded live in a small room with a single microphone and a loud fan. Shanna Germain is an astonishing creator. In addition to her work as Lead Editor for Monte Cook Games (including Numenra and the NOW KICKSTARTING "No Thank You, Evil"), she has distinguished herself as an author (contributing hundreds of stories for anthologies and publications), an anthology editor (NSFW: "Geek Love: An Anthology of Full Frontal Nerdity"), an innovative leader and a refreshing voice in the speculative fiction and erotica communities. I'm delighted to have another remarkable creator, Christiana Ellis, as my co-host and together we launch into 20(ish) minutes of writerly discourse with Shanna, exploring how she develops her (marvelous) characters, the impact of "genre" on writers, embracing diversity and sexuality in fiction, and more (and Shanna's Workshop Episode is EPIC!). Gaming and Speculative Fiction are inextricably linked... whether the tales of Conan the Barbarian led you to explore Dungeons & Dragons, or playing Warhammer 40K led you to the marvelous Black Library, the culture of Speculative Fiction is deeply informed  by gaming in all it's many manifestations. But does gaming influence Science Fiction and Fantasy literature. Is the genre altered somehow by the pervasive sensibilities of gaming culture? And, if so, how? // Amazon.com Widgets The nuances of the relationship between gaming and fiction will take more than one RTP Dialog session to fully explore... but you gotta start somewhere, right? And for an expedition of this magnitude, you better load up the roster with some of the deeply informed and articulate storytellers. That's why I asked Shanna Germain, Michael R. Underwood, Andrea Phillips, and James Sutter to join me in the sumptuous RTP virtual studio to embark on an most intriguing journey into two worlds that are so very distinct yet hopelessly intertwined.
