The captivity of marine mammals such as orcas, dolphins, sea lions, and belugas has been the subject of intense debate in recent decades. Although initially justified on the grounds of education, conservation, and entertainment, multiple scientific studies have demonstrated that confining these species generates profound negative consequences. These effects are not limited to the individual well-being of the animals but also impact ecology, the health of ecosystems, and the ethical perception of our relationship with nature.The movie “Free Willy,” which premiered on July 16, 1993, brought this issue to the public's attention, transforming a fictional story into a global call to question the legitimacy of captivity. Its protagonist, the orca Keiko, went from movie star to living symbol of the fight for freedom, awakening a collective consciousness that still fuels the debate about respect and dignity for marine life.The public demanded Keiko's actual release, as it was contradictory that the “star” of a film about freedom should remain in captivity.On July 11, 2002, Keiko was officially released off the coast of Iceland, in the same place where he had been captured 23 years earlier, becoming the first—and only—captive orca to return to its natural habitat.     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *In captivity, tanks represent only a tiny fraction of their natural habitat. This is carcass balance, balancing the sale of the popular bits with finding markets for the bits that are less desirable here. Those parts that can't be sold are sent for rendering, using heat to separate them into fats and proteins to be sold as animal feed, fertiliser or go into things like cosmetics.Shooting clubs on Salisbury Plain say they may have to close because they can't get a licence to release game birds. Clubs near protected areas, like Sites of Special Scientific Interest, now need a special licence from Natural England to release birds like pheasants and that's now harder to get because of the threat of bird flu. The British Association for Shooting and Conservation says the licensing system is legally flawed and it's issued legal proceedings against Natural England. However, the RSPB would like to see the licensing regime extended. New rules to make trade fairer for pig producers came in this week. A series of recent difficulties in the industry revealed that many farmers didn't have proper contracts for their stock. It's exactly what some politicians want.In June, a Texas law that requires age verification on certain websites withstood a legal challenge brought all the way to the US Supreme Court. It could be a blueprint for how the internet will change very soon.The law, titled HB 1181 and passed in 2023, places new requirements on websites that portray or depict “sexual material harmful to minors.” With the law, the owners or operators of websites that contain images or videos or illustrations or descriptions that “more than one-third of which is sexual material harmful to minors” must now verify the age of their website's visitors, at least in Texas.
