The poultry industry is calling for animal welfare and food production to be prioritised, as pressure increases on water supplies. This follows the closure of a chicken processing site in Devon due to a lack of water. All week we're looking at England's post-Brexit farm payment schemes, which reward farmers to farm more environmentally. We hear concerns that money will be tight and many farmers may miss out. And retail prices of chocolate should stay high to give farmers in west Africa a future, says the CEO of Tony's Chocolonely.Presented by Charlotte Smith and produced by Beatrice Fenton.

From countries that outlaw public Halloween celebrations to cities with trick-or-treat age limits, curfews, mask laws, costume bans, school restrictions, and even rules about porch lights, we explore how different communities have tried to manage the spooky season. We also dig into the reasons behind these restrictions, including religion, cultural identity, public safety, crime concerns, youth curfews, and fear of Halloween mischief. Along the way, we ask the bigger question: why does a holiday built around costumes, candy, and pretend scares continue to make some people so nervous? Why Your Core Exercises Aren't Fixing Your Back Pain

Somatic Movement & Mindset

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 20, 2026 23:54

Have you been told to strengthen your core to fix your back pain, yet despite doing countless planks, crunches, and core workouts, your discomfort keeps returning? You're not alone. In this episode of the Somatic Movement & Mindset Podcast, Heidi Hadley explores a hidden reason why traditional core exercises may not be delivering the results you expected. While core strength has become one of the most common recommendations for back pain, many people are unknowingly developing chronic muscular bracing and co-contraction—a state where muscles remain excessively contracted, limiting mobility, reducing shock absorbency, and increasing tension throughout the body.Discover why stability and rigidity are not the same thing, and how true movement health depends on your ability to both contract and release. In This Episode You'll Discover:✅ Why strengthening your core isn't always the answer to back pain✅ What co-contraction is and how it develops✅ How excessive abdominal bracing can reduce mobility and movement efficiency✅ Why chronic muscle tension increases compressive forces on the spine✅ The relationship between breathing, posture, and back pain✅ How reduced shock absorbency affects your body from head to toe✅ Why stiffness is often mistaken for stability✅ The role of the nervous system in chronic tension and recurring pain✅ Why flexibility alone isn't the solution✅ How pandiculation helps retrain the brain and release chronic muscular holding patternsUnderstanding Co-ContractionYour body is designed to move with adaptability, efficiency, and ease. However, when muscles around a joint contract simultaneously and remain partially engaged for prolonged periods, movement becomes restricted. This phenomenon, known as co-contraction, is often driven by stress, injury, fear of movement, repetitive habits, or well-intentioned advice to constantly "engage your core."Over time, this can lead to: Increased muscle fatigue  Reduced mobility  Restricted breathing  Increased spinal compression  Poor shock absorption  Persistent pain and stiffness The result? A body that feels tight, guarded, and less capable of moving naturally. Why More Tension Isn't More StabilityMany people associate a strong core with a healthy back. But true stability comes from adaptability—not rigidity.A healthy neuromuscular system allows muscles to contract when needed and release when they're not. When muscles remain switched on unnecessarily, the nervous system loses efficiency, movement becomes less fluid, and pain often persists.A Different Approach: PandiculationPandiculation is a natural process that works directly with the brain and nervous system to help restore voluntary control of muscles.Rather than forcing muscles to lengthen temporarily, pandiculation helps reset chronic tension patterns by improving communication between the brain and body. This can help: Reduce chronic muscle tension  Improve mobility  Enhance posture  Support better breathing mechanics  Improve shock absorbency  Create more efficient movement patterns  Reduce recurring pain and discomfort Key TakeawayThe goal isn't simply to build a stronger core. The goal is to create a body that can respond appropriately to the demands placed upon it—contracting when necessary and releasing when possible. When we learn to reduce unnecessary muscular bracing and improve nervous system regulation, we create the conditions for more comfortable, efficient movement.Ready to Learn More?Inside the Total Somatics Membership, you'll find an extensive library of guided Clinical Somatic Movement lessons, pandiculation practices, nervous system regulation techniques, mindfulness sessions, and educational resources designed to help you:✨ Reduce chronic pain ✨ Improve posture and mobility ✨ Release persistent muscle tension ✨ Enhance body awareness ✨ Move with greater comfort and confidenceJoin a supportive global community of members from over 45 countries and discover a smarter way to care for your body.

Have you ever struggled to explain what's happening in your relationship — where nothing looks "bad enough" to point to, but something feels wrong every single day? In this episode, I'm joined by Anne Wintemute, co-founder and CEO of Aimee Says, an AI companion built specifically for survivors of covert abuse, coercive control, and narcissistic partners. Anne spent years working directly with survivors navigating the family court system before she and her co-founder Steven asked a powerful question: could AI help survivors document, understand, and ultimately heal from what they'd been through? Today, Aimee Says has helped over 70,000 users do exactly that. We dig into how Aimee Says detects patterns like restricted autonomy, gaslighting, and coercive control — even when there's no single moment you can point to. You'll hear how it turns lived experience into visual data: bubble charts that reveal the shape of a relationship, timelines that show escalation, and "binders" that prepare survivors for mediation, court, or even just their next therapy session. We also cover how this is fundamentally different from a tool like ChatGPT, how privacy and legal protections work, and where Anne sees this technology heading in the next five years. If you've ever felt like you didn't have the language for what happened to you, or like no one would believe you without "proof" — this episode is for you. X2M.252 Seuil — The Prisoner and the Threshold Series: CR20 Place De La Concorde Psalm 23 opens the passage: Yahweh as shepherd, friend, refuge, feast, and overflowing cup. Even in the valley of deepest darkness, fear does not conquer because the Shepherd is near.¹ This is **Seuil**: the threshold where restriction becomes entrance, where the bound place becomes the birthing place, where the small room opens into manifold wisdom. Paul enters Ephesians 3 as a prisoner of Christ. Bound in body, yet entrusted with revelation. Restricted in movement, yet carrying a mystery meant to reach the nations. This is the paradox of the threshold: freedom comes through holy constraint. Expansion comes through surrender. The Gospel travels through a man who cannot travel. Watchman Nee in prison. Bunyan writing from confinement. Paul bound for the Gentiles. Christ enclosed in human flesh. God often hides global architecture inside a small neighborhood. The mystery is this: Gentiles are now co-heirs, members of one body, and sharers in the promise through union with Christ. The wall has fallen. Jew and Gentile, male and female, slave and free — all are summoned into one new man.² This is not theory. It is construction. The manifold wisdom of God is revealed through the church: many-sided, layered, relational, architectural, local and global at once. What looks small in one place may carry a pattern large enough to reshape nations. The threshold is where this wisdom becomes visible. A prison cell becomes apostolic headquarters. A wilderness becomes formation. A restriction becomes revelation. A cross becomes a doorway. Seuil is the place where the soul stops resisting the boundary and begins listening inside it. The question is not, “Why am I restrained?” The question is, “What revelation is being formed here?” In Place De La Concorde architecture, X2M.252 is the threshold event: the public square of the heart learns holy agreement under constraint. The false head of self-effort is removed; the true Head teaches the vessel how to receive wisdom from the narrow place. Grace alone empowers. Christ alone is righteousness. The Spirit alone sanctifies. The Father alone knows how to form kings. And kings do not enter by arrogance. They enter by faith in the faithfulness of Jesus. The threshold is narrow, but it is not punishment. It is passage. The remnant learns to stop despising the day of small beginnings. A seed, a cell, a room, a hidden yes — these may be the places where heaven installs the architecture of a future world. It is about discovering that the narrow place is a gate — where the prisoner receives revelation, the vessel becomes royal, and the manifold wisdom of God crosses the threshold into the earth. **Footnotes** ¹ Psalm 23 frames the Shepherd as nearness, provision, and fearless passage. ² Ephesians 3 reveals the mystery: Gentiles made co-heirs through union with Christ. ³ Seuil means threshold: the place of crossing, passage, and holy transition. ⁴ Restriction can become revelation when received in humility. ⁵ The manifold wisdom of God is revealed through the church as one new man.

#319 Last week I saw a patient who had been on a low FODMAP diet for 12 years. Self-prescribed. No reintroduction. No professional guidance. His story is far more common than most people realise — and it's exactly why I recorded this episode. Low FODMAP, keto, and carnivore diets all have legitimate therapeutic applications. But when they're self-prescribed, followed indefinitely, and used without ever investigating the underlying cause of symptoms, they can cause their own harm — quietly, progressively, and in ways that are very difficult to reverse. In this episode, I'm drawing on my extensive experience working with constipation and gut health to talk specifically about what these diets do to your bowel — the microbiome changes, the impact on butyrate and serotonin production, the loss of mechanical stimulation, and why constipation is one of the most commonly reported and least discussed consequences of long-term dietary restriction. I also cover the conditions — including SIBO, where a low FODMAP approach may be appropriate for longer than the standard timeframe, and why even in those cases, reintroduction is always the goal. If you feel better on a restricted diet but can't seem to reintroduce foods without your symptoms returning, this episode will help you understand why — and what to do about it. In this episode: What Monash University actually says about how long the low FODMAP diet should be followed Why prolonged FODMAP restriction affects Bifidobacteria, butyrate production, and bowel function What the research shows about the ketogenic diet, microbiome diversity, fibre intake, and constipation The latest evidence on the carnivore diet — including a 2026 cross-sectional study and 2025 scoping review Why symptom relief on a restricted diet is the beginning of the investigation, not the end of it A clear path forward for anyone stuck in a cycle of restriction with no resolution in sight Resources mentioned: Get Things Moving — Evidence-based guide to overcoming constipation:  Book a consultation BetterMe Tea Lynda Griparic is a degree-qualified naturopath and certified Healthy Gut Practitioner with extensive experience in constipation, SIBO, and gut microbiome health. Trump, China, and the Petrodollar: The Quiet Financial Ambush Nobody Saw ComingI marvel at the genius of Donald Trump, and yes, I'm fully aware that saying this publicly causes certain people to react like Victorian women spotting an exposed ankle.“We get it, Kevin. You like Trump.”Correct.And while the NeverTrump crowd continues fantasizing that I spend my evenings in a sequined MAGA marching-band uniform twirling pom-poms to Lee Greenwood songs, admiration becomes unavoidable when you watch a man repeatedly turn global power structures into IKEA furniture assembled without instructions, yet somehow sturdier than before.Because what Trump is doing with Venezuela, Iran, and China isn't random. It isn't improvisation. It isn't “orange-man chaos.”It's leverage. And the frightening part for Democrats is this: they still think politics operates entirely inside press conferences, polling data, and emotionally manipulative TikTok videos featuring women crying in parked Subarus.Trump understands something far older and far more brutal.Civilizations run on energy. Empires run on currency. And the nation controlling both gets to write history in ink while everybody else scribbles in pencil. For years China believed America had grown too decadent, too distracted, and too apologetic to defend the dollar's dominance. Beijing watched Democrats transform the United States into a country increasingly governed by HR departments, pharmaceutical jingles, and people who put pronouns in email signatures longer than the emails themselves.China saw weakness.Frankly, who wouldn't?Under Obama and Biden, America projected the economic confidence of a mall kiosk selling phone cases in its final week before bankruptcy. We apologized for our power. Restricted our own energy production. Printed money like game-show contestants trapped in a cash tornado. Meanwhile China quietly built influence across Africa, South America, and the Middle East.Their goal was obvious: dethrone the dollar. Not with tanks. Not with bombs. With oil contracts. That's the key Americans miss.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
