Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Diplomatic correspondent Lazar Berman joins host Jessica Steinberg for today's episode. Following a phone meeting of the security cabinet, Berman discusses that Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar was involved in the conversation that included Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, despite efforts to fire the Shin Bet chief. Hamas officials have said they will not accept any partial deals and still demand an end to the war, with some of the terrorist group's reactions appearing to react to protests in Israeli society, says Berman. He also speaks about criticism regarding top hostage negotiator Ron Dermer, with remarks from both the Qataris and hostage families about Dermer, a close advisor to Netanyahu. With the latest headlines about ongoing talks between Iran and the US, Berman expresses concern about Israel's position. He discusses chief negotiator Steve Witkoff, who doesn't have much background in Iran or the nuclear program but has Trump's ear and is a skilled negotiator. Berman notes that Netanyahu can't undermine Trump in this potential Iran deal, but the final result may not be as good for Israel. Please check out The Times of Israel's ongoing live blog for more updates. 1)Trump's "Houties PC Small Group" Had Chat?: In planning for recent March 15th US Air Strikes on Yemen, the so called "Principles Committee" small group of Trump's top national security advisors held a number of 'chats' or briefings/discussions on attacking the Houties, including on March 13th. The PC Small Group held these discussions using a commercial app called Signal. Did this present any security risks to the US military troops attacking Yemen?2)Trump Picks Stephan Feinberg as Deputy Secretary of Defense: Feinburg's nomination was just approved by the US Senate. He has no direct military experience, but has owned a number of companies that sold products or services to the DOD. Does this present a conflict of interest? Or does his contractor experience better qualify him to oversee the massive Department of Defense?3)Ron Dermer's Proud to Have Been An American?: Mr. Ron Dermer, Israel's current Minister for Strategic Affairs, was originally an American citizen, --- born in Miami, FL to Jewish immigrant parents. But after growing up in the USA, he wanted to serve in Israel's diplomatic service, and had to give up his US citizenship to do so. He wrote a paper entitled "Proud to have been an American". Later Dermer became Israel's Ambassador to the USA. What do you think of Mr. Dermer's past actions and current influence on US-Israel relations?4)The Day After in Gaza?: Prime Minister Netanyahu has re-started the IDF bombing and troop attacks in Gaza, calling up 400,000 reservists. In the last few days, IDF bombed a hospital, and since March 18th has killed 123 children. What is the end game for Israel's war on Gaza, and is it the same vision as Americans want?

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Editor David Horovitz joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's Daily Briefing. Six Israelis held hostage by Hamas were released yesterday -- four whom were taken on October 7, 2023, and two who were in the Strip for about a decade. Horovitz relates what we're beginning to learn about the horrific conditions of their captivities. Hamas published a video Saturday showing Israeli hostages Evyatar David and Guy Gilboa Dalal being forced to watch as other captives were freed and begging to be saved as well. Also with this in mind, Israel said early Sunday that it was delaying the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners who had been slated to go free Saturday until Jerusalem receives assurances regarding the end of “humiliating ceremonies” staged by Hamas when hostages are handed over. Hamas claims this is a pretext. Is it? Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer reportedly met US Mideast special envoy Steve Witkoff in Washington on Thursday to kick off talks on phase two of the hostage release and ceasefire deal with Hamas, as mixed messaging emerges on the likelihood of a next stage. Horovitz delves into the uncertainty of the negotiations, even as Israel has apparent US backing for whatever decision it makes about a second phase or a return to war. Tens of thousands gathered in Beirut for the funeral of Hezbollah’s former leader Hassan Nasrallah, nearly five months after he was killed in an Israeli airstrike on a southern suburb of the Lebanese capital. We discuss who may be in attendance and what this funeral aims to accomplish. Please see today's ongoing live blog for more updates. For the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, an attack on Iran's nuclear program in response to the Mullah regime's assault on Israel with over 200 rockets remains an option, despite strong opposition from the U.S., as stated by Israeli Minister for Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer in an interview with BILD Deputy Editor Paul Ronzheimer. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. US bureau chief Jacob Magid joins host Jessica Steinberg for today's episode. Magid discusses the latest visit to the US by National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, amid the current kerfuffle between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the US administration. Dermer and Hanegbi were meeting with US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and Secretary of State Antony Blinken , and "received an earful" from US officials regarding the video that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made earlier in the week with accusations about the delay of US arms shipments to Israel. Magid discusses whether Netanyahu is making comments now because Defense Minister Yoav Gallant is going to DC next week and perhaps doesn't want him receiving the credit for solving any issues regarding arms during his trip. Magid also talks about the ongoing US consideration to set sanctions against Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, given his longtime efforst to withhold funds from the Palestinian Authority, thereby destabilizing the Palestinian government. Magid also looks at the possibility of US sanctions against the far-right Tzav 9 group, which has organized efforts to halt and wreak havoc with US aid convoys making their way into Gaza. Victim advocates are questioning the process that allowed a convicted sex offender to gain a position on the High Court. In 2018, Adrian Dermer was jailed after he admitted to a sexual connection and violent charges with a 14-year-old when he was two months shy of 17. Dermer has now been admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court. Criminal lawyer Steve Cullen says the Law Society has a comprehensive process when it comes to issuing the necessary certificate of character to practise law. "That committee would call for a variety of reports, the onus would be on the applicant to satisfy the committee that the were fit and proper - I would think any committee member would have to have regards to the totality of the circumstances." Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. US correspondent Jacob Magid and environmental reporter Sue Surkes join host Jessica Steinberg for today's podcast. Magid discusses the current dilemma of UN official Sarah Muscroft, based in East Jlem, and currently on leave for a tweet about indiscriminate Islamic Jihad rocket fire. He also delves into the story about former Israeli ambassador to the US Ron Dermer backing his former boss, Benjamin Netanyahu — with regard to a claim in Jared Kushner's forthcoming book that the then-prime minister went off-script by announcing plans to immediately annex large parts of the West Bank. Surkes talks about a more personal story, about her father-in-law, Ralph Friedland, who later became Freeman, who was saved from Nazi Germany by a soccer player from the British football association. Steinberg adds a mention about basketball team Hapoel Tel Aviv, now known as Hapoel Vegan Friendly Tel Aviv, for its new sponsor, the vegan organization. Discussed articles include: Senior UN official loses her post after tweet condemning PIJ rocket fire at Israel Backing Netanyahu, Dermer pans Kushner claim ex-PM went rogue with annexation pledge ToI tale about soccer hero saving German Jew will be studied by Premier League youth Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. Former Israeli ambassador to the U.S., Ron Dermer discusses President Biden's recent trip to Israel and the politics surrounding his trip to the Middle East. Saying, that rather than addressing the political concerns and the tense climate in the region between Iran and Israel, "Instead, this trip was made largely because of the price of gas in the United States.” Commenting on a major policy disagreement between Israel and the United States right now, saying he does “not believe the policy of the Biden administration is to prevent a nuclear armed Iran,” but rather "is to contain a nuclear armed Iran.” The former ambassador says that in the past, "Israel has taken out two nuclear programs,” and that he does not think that the United States is "going to take care of" Iran. Saying, "it comes down to really one of two choices, either we're going to have to take action, or the people of Iran are going to rise up and throw out these this regime that they despise, and we should be preparing for both scenarios."See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The Biden administration has announced that the President will take his first trip to the Middle East as president. His first stop will be in Israel to meet with Israeli leaders and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, before heading to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where he will meet with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The U.S.-Saudi relationship began nearly eight decades ago between FDR and King Ibn Saud. With varying degrees of tumult, the relationship has survived – and sometimes thrived – through 14 U.S. presidencies. Has all that now changed? Has there been a sense in Riyadh – and across the Middle East – that the U.S. (through recent Democratic and Republican administrations) is downgrading its focus in the Middle East. Is there a risk that China gradually replaces the U.S. as the most important geopolitical partner of Saudi Arabia? And will Saudi Arabia join the Abraham Accords? And, could President Biden engineer it and win the Nobel Peace Prize? Former Israeli Ambassador Ron Dermer served as Israel's chief envoy to the U.S. from 2013 to 2021 – working with three U.S. administrations. He was one of Prime Minister Netanyahu's closest advisers and played a key role in what led to the U.S. relocation of our embassy to Jerusalem, U.S. recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, implementation of the maximum pressure campaign against Iran, and the historic breakthrough that led to the Abraham Accords. He's a graduate of the Wharton School and completed a degree at Oxford. Ambassador Dermer and I had this conversation a few days ago at the Jewish Leadership Conference (https://www.jewishleadershipconference.org/), which is sponsored by The Tikvah Fund (https://tikvahfund.org/).

The security situation continues to deteriorate in Israel -- tragic developments, including right in the heart of Tel Aviv. We continue to monitor developments and stay in close touch with Israeli family and friends. While Israel is a major focus of today's conversation, the security crisis is not. We focus on the political impasse in Israel, which may be connected to the security crisis. Today we sit down with Ambassador Ron Dermer, who served as Israel's chief envoy to the United States from 2013 to 2021 – working closely with the Obama, Trump, and Biden administrations. During that time, he was widely regarded as one of the most consequential ambassadors from any country. Ambassador Dermer was one of Prime Minister Netanyahu's closest advisers and played a key role in what led to the US relocation of our embassy to Jerusalem, U.S. recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, implementation of the maximum pressure campaign against Iran, and the historic breakthrough that led to the Abraham Accords. He is a graduate of the Wharton School and completed a degree at Oxford. In this episode, we focus on three topics: What to make of the current Israeli political crisis? (Will the Government fall? Will Netanyahu return to power?) What are the real prospects for a new Iran nuclear deal? And what to make of America's role in the Russia-Ukraine crisis?

In this week’s episode, Rich and Jarrod are joined by former Israeli Ambassador to the United States Ron Dermer for part two in their conversation on Dermer’s time in Washington and the battle over the Iran Deal. Dermer also clarifies and provides context for his recent remarks about Evangelical support for Israel. Plus, Dermer responds to recent comments by Ben Rhodes on the podcast charging that Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is to blame for turning support for Israel into more of a partisan issue.
