As a trader, you have to be able to keep a check on your emotions, no matter what the state of play. Like air traffic controller, a sniper. Life or death. My next guest on A Trader's Life is no stranger to extreme pressure in trading. He's been trading since the eighties when charts were typically worked up with a pencil and paper. When he was diagnosed with arthritis as a young man, he knew he'd have to work on his mindset if he was to cope with the kinds of stressful situations he found himself in on a daily basis.. Today Mark Randall is a very successful high performance coach. He helps develop traders, and trading teams at corporate level. They hire him because his methods and teaching make a real difference, not just in financial gains but also in terms of a trader's overall wellbeing. ==A unique trading strategy with a very high win rateYou've probably heard of Fibonacci, and you may already be using the Fibonacci tool you find on TradingView as part of your trading stratregy. Until about a year ago, I thought these tools were the last on the subject of Finoacci sequences. Then I met trader and investor All Peters-Plocher and talked to the people using her proprietary Fibonacci tool and strategy. To date, I have met five of Alla's students, and they all said joining Alla's courses was the best investment they ever made. One of the guys I spoke to said he'd been struggling for about 10 years before he joined one of Alla's courses, and once he got going, he was consistently profitable. He just bought a house in Arizona with the money he's made since he joined.Like me, he's a filmmaker. One of things he loves about her system is that he spends only a few minutes a day checking trades, and can focus on his filmmaking projects. I also met Alla herself when she was over in London, early in 2024. She even took me to lunch - at Claridges! - with her husband and two other 'student' traders. I believe she genuinely cares about the traders who sign up to her programs. More than that - she's on a mission to help traders of all abilities.  It's very rare I send out affiliate links, not least because I have to have complete faith in the person and his or her coaching or product before I do - but down below you'll find some links to her courses. Transform your trading performanceIf this is a good time for you to join one of Alla's program, and you found this podcast episode useful in helping you come to that decision, I'd really appreciate it if you were to sign up via one of the links below - it would be extra cost to you but would help me cover some of the costs of running this podcast and enable me to do more ambitious episodes, both audio and video, in the future. If you'd like to talk to me in person about Alla's courses, feel free to reach out on email - nic.penrake@gmail.com - and we can arrange to have a chat over Zoom or WhatsApp, whichever you prefer. Previously a lawyer, now a full time trader, Pablo Fdez Escarzaga from Spain told me he spent his first two years trading the markets "going nowhere". Then, quite by chance, he came across Alla Peters Plocher's Fibonacci Trading Institute and, within a few months of applying her strategy, his trading improved. Massively.Today he typically makes 10% a week trading her method on a range of assets, from Futures to options. Pablo is the fourth person I've spoken to who signed up to Alla's course and completely transformed his trading performance. If you feel as Pablo did that you're "going nowhere" with your trading, or you're making progress but it's all so up and down, I think you'll find this conversation highly motivating. ==Discover the benefits of Alla's unique trading strategyIt's very rare I send out affiliate links, not least because I have to have complete faith in the person and his or her coaching or product before I do. At the time of writing this, I have met four of Alla's students in person, and they all said joining Alla's courses was the best investment they ever made. One of the guys is a filmmaker. If you've been trading a while, it's probably safe to assume you've come across the Fibonacci retracement and extension tools. And perhaps you've also come across a few traders on YouTube who show you how to use these tools. But unless you've already joined the Fibonacci Trading Institute, you won't have come across the Fibonacci tools and strategies as created by Alla Peters Plocher. This, to me, is another dimension altogether.Alla has been fascinated by numbers and patterns in music and mathematics since she was a child. She became fascinated by the markets some twenty years ago, and today she has students all around the world. If you're fascinated by the patterns we see in the markets, and you want to develop a more preciseI trading strategy than you currently work with, I think you'll get a lot of value from this episode. ==Alla's Coaching ProgramsIt's very rare I send out affiliate links, not least because I have to have complete faith in the person and his or her coaching or product before I do. I have met three of Alla's students in person and they all said joining Alla's courses was the best investment they ever made. One of the guys is a filmmaker. On a recent trip to lecture in Boston, I had the great privilege to visit the home of Dr Horace Wood ‘Woody' Brock. Woody was probably the first collector I ever met. Before I joined Christie's as a graduate trainee in September 1997, I visited the Grosvenor House Art and Antiques Fair, at the time the most important art fair in the Western hemisphere, a place where the international great and the good would visit to buy the best the world's dealers had to offer. As I wandered around the fair, I walked onto the Asprey stand - probably the last fair Asprey's attended - and inspected a rather elaborate English clock with superb gilt bronze mounts. I don't remember the maker, but it was highly decorative. After a minute or two, I was approached by a tall, rather impressive figure in glasses, dressed immaculately in a dark chalk-stripe suit. He demanded - in his unmistakeable firm East Coast American tones - why I was interested in said clock. This had never happened to me, and I certainly wasn't expecting anyone to take any notice of me. Was he, perhaps, more interested in my girlfriend who I had dragged along and was rather bemused by all of this? No, it seemed he was curious - insistent even - to know what I was doing with my life, where I had been to university, and which department I was to be joining at Christie's. As I said that I was shortly to join the furniture department, he sensed a like-minded soul (and he was right). To my great surprise, I was invited to meet him later in the week for breakfast at Claridges, where I tried hard to keep up with his insistence that I will enjoy furniture - having never previously shown any interest in that direction. Woody was right of course, and it all changed after I joined Christie's in September 1997 and found that I really did enjoy the study of 18th century furniture, which Woody considers in our discussion here, to be the zenith of great design of almost any age.Ludwig van Beethoven, Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 73, ‘Emperor', 1992. I remember the day I looked in the mirror, and it dawned on me that I had been living a lie. I had lived all my life thinking I had my mum's eyes. An eye, I can assure you, that would never require a Blepharoplasty. That day, I realised I had inherited my dad's eyes. It's funny how I loved my mum's brown eyes because they reminded me of her; I never had the same warm feeling when it came to my dad's heavy eyelid. Lol. I decided at that moment that I would have a blepharoplasty at some stage in the future, only considering it again once I was invited to London to interview the recently appointed medical director of Environ Skincare, Dr Matthias Aust. After a few glasses of Rioja in Claridges, I felt ready to ask Dr Aust if he would be so kind as to perform the procedure. And here I am. 14 days post-surgery, ready to give you all the details. For the final episode of The Last Bohemians: LA, supported by Audio-Technica, we meet French fashion disruptor and true original, Michéle Lamy. She's been married to the designer Rick Owens, her former pattern cutter, since 2006 and is often referred to as his 'muse'. But Michéle is a chameleonic creative in her own right, forever staging art happenings, musical collaborations and style projects around the world, as well as co-designing the furniture for the Rick Owens line. She's so in-demand that she's tricky to track down: we did this interview partly in London, at Claridges in Mayfair, and partly at the Chateau Marmont in LA, the city Michéle lived in for 26 years until the early 2000s. In those days, she was better known as the owner and host of cult Hollywood nightspot Les Deux Cafe, where anyone who's anyone would dine as Michéle performed smoky jazz numbers in her thick drawl. Now Michéle is more nomadic, splitting her time between Los Angeles and Paris, and attracting beautiful freaks wherever she goes. A gothic style icon (she's been called a vampire, ageless, the ultimate eccentric…), her signature look is ink-dipped fingers, a line of kohl on her forehead, a voluminous outfit and a cigarette always in her hand. Listen out for her many bangles too, which clank as she speaks! In this hypnotic episode, Michéle talks to us about the influence of French philosopher Gilles Deleuze, her style awakening in the Moroccan desert, how she decides who to collaborate with, her unlikely kinship with Kim Kardashian, why she loves boxing, how she got gold teeth, following her instincts and the importance of “finding your tribe”. That's it for the LA series but listen out for some bonus episodes very soon.  CREDITS Presenter and Exec Producer: Kate Hutchinson Editors: Holly Fisher and Mariana Sousa Aguiar Additional production: Sefa Nyki Photography: Matilda Hill-Jenkins With thanks to Janet Fischgrund and everyone at Owenscorp All music by Mara Carlyle with the exception of 'Laman' by Imdukal'N' El Hussain Safir and The Last Bohemians theme music by Pete Cunningham, Ned Pegler and Caradog Jones. This month we talk to a legend in the design industry.  Frank Sawkins from Czech & Speake.  You may not realise that many of the iconic ‘looks' of bathroom brassware, which is the name used for taps, spouts and shower heads, were originally designed and supplied by Franks company.  An industry leader, design innovator and expert in how to achieve the 5* luxury function and aesthetic in on of the hardest working rooms in your home.  Great Design means something functions as brilliantly well as it is beautiful! Frank shares with us one of the first attempts at creating an innovative function in the bathroom incorporating a push button flush (something which is common place today, but wasn't heard of then) and how his boss' brilliant design solution turned out not to be so brilliant - resulting in a flooded house.  Reminding us that the function is the most important aspect!  Helping reinforce my favourite phrase, function first, aesthetic after. Hotel feature bathrooms - Why are they such a common source of inspiration? Why do we love them Frank reminds us that the bathroom is an important test of the value of a hotel room - if we've spent €500 or €800 euro a night we expect for every element to be a very high standard, and the bathroom is one of the most important locations to showcase this.  The investment in a hotel bathroom, therefore, is really a way of making you comfortable and feeling like you've got value for money from your stay! It's also why trying to reproduce that look at how exactly like for like can be eye waveringly expensive! Bathrooms are glamorous  Bathrooms are a really good way of articulating the epoch of the hotel and whether it's the classical style of Claridges or the more modern styling of the Rosewood hotel there is a way to inject glamour into the bathrooms.  Bathrooms are inspirational & emotional! Staying in a hotel normally means we have the space and time to relax in the way we can't at home.  We will take the time to have a bath on a Monday night, when we would never manage this in our day to day busy lives! So not only are we spending time in these beautiful spaces taking in all the design details - we are also generally in a more positive and relaxed mindset - all of which is conducive to absorbing all those inspirational design details.  ‘Who doesn't love a glass of Champagne, good music and a beautiful bathroom!' Frank Sawkins, MD Czech & Speake Sympathetic bathroom design. If you live in a period property - there is a great supply of era specific brassware which you will find to suit the period of your building.  Frank goes on to talk beyond taps, into the icon roll top baths and even the use of appropriate wallpapers all too invoke and articulate the design style.  The original creator of the heritage tap range  I tell off Frank for not self promoting that in the 1970's and 80's, Czech & Speake brought out a range called the Edwardian - which has since been imitated and adopted (but never bettered in regards to quality) across the world.  If you have used or own a property with a ‘Victoriania' styled bathroom - there is a very good chance you are seeing the inspiration from Franks design.  If you are really lucky - you will actually have Czech and Speake originals! Must haves in a bathroom The first is water pressure: A bathroom should be therapeutic experience - this does mean good supply of hot water at the right pressure, literally, on tap.  And if you are thinking about water supply also making sure the drainage is as efficient as the supply. Challenge your designers with your desires: If you want to have three people all having showers or baths at the same time in the house, challenge your designers with how to achieve this.  It is possible to operate different systems to create this, but with extra design comes extra cost.  If the investment in that solution is too great for you - at least you know that you chose to have to stagger your showering, rather than being disappointed that your home isn't performing as you wanted.  Separate Lavatory: Adverts for bathroom sanitary ware always shows everyone in one room - but the reality is separating out the loo from the rest of the bathroom gets twice the use of the space. 5* hotels are using lavatory cabinets to achieve this - ensuring that the remaining space is pure luxury. Lighting - should not be an after thought. Natural light is the most important light when doing makeup but focused lights is essential for shaving.  So all kind of lighting needs to be thought about.  Just overhead lights will not work as it's too harsh for relaxing, casts shadows in the wrong place for anything you need to be close up in the mirror for and will create a false impression of the finish of your makeup.  If all of this is too overwhelming to think about - designers have a very good idea of what great lighting is and you can challenge them to ensure you have the full variety of types of lights for your varied needs.  Franks personal choice; He loves to have a consistent pallet for wall and floor - be it marble, ceramic or terrazzo.  He worked on a property with a great designer which had a number of elements cast in terrazzo and loved the consistency of that pallet.  Each to their own.  Say no to carpet! There is no excuse for carpet.  Full stop.  Rather have tiles with underfloor heating. The rest of the technical stuff Both Frank and I agree that a shower with a flush threshold is very important (nothing to trip over) but to get this right there needs to be lots of consideration to get the angle of the shower floor right so the water drains as fast as it is being supplied and that there is sufficient space under the shower for the drain and associated pipework. Something your designers will be able to ensure is possible. Mix and match or same same for bathroom accessories Frank talks about his own design style and how he prefers to have the same style for you taps, towel rails, toilet roll holders etc.  Achieving a mix and match style is much harder than you think.  When you see a mix and match style done well - it has a very good designer behind it and will follow a very clear and clever aesthetic strategy - often the things that feel effortless, have taken the most effort. And so much more Frank and I basically just love bathrooms and we talk fragrance, Japanese design, cleaning, views… listen to hear more about two people who love a glass of Champagne, good music and a stunning bath.  For more information Frank and the Czech and Speake range of products can be found at https://www.czechandspeake.com/bathrooms/ and his range of aromatics are available at https://www.czechandspeake.com/fragrance/  If you have enjoyed this episode please rate, review and subscribe as it helps other home owners design their happiness.

Claire has worked at the Ritz, intercontinental, Claridges, Buckingham Palace and in California with Thomas Keller for 5 years at the French Laundry. She has worked alongside some of the best known chefs and pastry chefs in the UK, and has loved the opportunity to learn from them all.We talk about what her current day entails , about running a business as well as creating new products and working out the schedules, timings etc for all of that day's productionWe talk about being organised, methodical, practical and if that is why pastry attracts a lot of female chefs rather than the main kitchen where things are very urgent and very much here and nowClaire reveals she is a Marmite lover She talks about travelling to California to work with Thomas Keller at the French Laundry, as someone who is very close to her own family and had never missed a Christmas with them , and how it surprised her she did that, stayed 5 years and loved it.We talk too about the challenges facing the industry , about the shortage of skilled pastry chefs and how we can encourage more people into these jobsFor all that Great British Bake Off is a huge hit, there are still not the numbers of people we need wanting to learn these skills and work their way up, the way that Claire did … See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

“Love, Passion & Hard-Work” are the three things that define Sara Taneja, the founder and head-chef of “Let's Bake Love”. Sara was a trained Bharatnatayam & Western Dancer who turned to Baking as a profession, right after her school. Her first encounter with baking was when her tuition teacher taught her to bake a biscuit cake in class 7th. It was quite early on in her journey when she realised that she would be her own boss and would start her own bakery. At 21 yrs, she opened her dream Pastry Store, “Let's Bake Love” but unfortunately, it had to shut due to the pandemic. However, lockdown gave her enough time to think about the right business model for her bakery as well as for deciding the products and flavours that she should offer on her Menu. “Just keep trusting the process”, she says. Now, “Let's Bake Love” runs a Cloud Kitchen with a huge team at the back-end.“The biggest mistake that people often make is of not delegating their work; You cannot keep your hands and feet into everything” - Sara Taneja, Let's Bake LoveEven for Sara, it has been a transition from being a control freak to becoming an encouraging and super-supportive boss lady to her staff. In this episode, we have covered so many important and interesting topics that you got to give it a listen as a young and aspiring baker. Her hadde hun sitt private dronningrike, med hester, have, spaserturer og selskapelighet. I MUSEUM forteller dronningens biograf.

When it comes to chocolatier-patissiers, William Curley is a world-class player. He’s one of only 7 chefs in the UK to have achieved ‘Master of Culinary Arts’.  The chance to earn this accolade – which is the culinary equivalent of a Nobel Prize – only comes round every 4 years…and it took William three attempts.  Gruelling, as you’ll hear… Perhaps it’s not surprising that William has done so brilliantly. As well as having natural talent, he’s fostered that talent by working with the best, from the moment he became an apprentice at Gleneagles, followed by stints with acclaimed chefs such as Pierre  Koffmann, Anton Edelmann, Raymond Blanc and Marco Pierre White. You might think that working with big personalities and big brands (Harrods, Claridges, The Savoy …I could go on) would have gone to his head.  Not a bit of it.  As you’ll hear, William is delightful, down-to-earth and humbled by the fact he was able to crowd-fund his latest venture: his own shop in the heart of Soho. This means he can continue to be hands-on, creating amazing chocolates and chocolate patisserie.  Be warned, your mouth will water during the course of this conversation…  Enjoy.

During his 35-year career, Rear Admiral Layman commanded a variety of ships including HMS Argonaut during the Falklands conflict and the aircraft carrier HMS Invincible. The Wager Disaster - Mayhem, Mutiny and Murder in the South Seas is published by Uniform Press. Jonathan Church is artistic director of the Chichester Festival Theatre. He is currently directing Penelope Wilton in Taken at Midnight which tells the story of young Jewish lawyer, Hans Litten, who subpoenaed Adolf Hitler in 1931. Jonathan, who learnt his trade backstage as an assistant electrician and stage manager, recently directed Singin' in the Rain; The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui and The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. Taken at Midnight is at Theatre Royal Haymarket, London. Paul McKenna is a hypnotist and self-help author. His new book, The 3 Things that will Change Your Destiny Today, aims to enable readers to take control of their lives and make decisions. A former radio presenter, Paul has hosted self-improvement television shows and seminars about hypnosis, weight loss and motivation. The 3 Things that will Change Your Destiny Today is published by Bantam Press. Producer: Paula McGinley.

I produced this documentary on Claridges when I started studying for a life in radio back in 1992. Interesting to listen to this in the context of the current TV series about the top London hotel. #Claridges #hotel #London

How much will British taxpayers suffer from the fallout in Ireland? British banks such as RBS and Lloyds have large debts in the Republic, and are making decisions about which to call in, threatening more pain for local communities. Morland Sanders hears protests from small contractors in Donegal where Ulster Bank want to sell off a prestige residential development at rock bottom prices. This amid questions about the part British institutions actually played in fuelling the property market bubble. As the Irish government deals with the "toxic loans" of the Republic's banks, it's being estimated that 15% of them are in the UK. We explore how this will affect the businesses reliant on that borrowed money, and what will happen to those trophy assets such as Claridges, now 'owned' by the Republic's new holder of its toxic debts, NAMA. The Chancellor, George Osborne may have said the £3.2bn loan to Ireland was to support a friend in need, and protect British exports, but we report on the importance to British banks and British businesses of an economic recovery in Ireland. Producer: Ian Muir-Cochrane.

For starters, we look at the common lies told by stand-up comedians, followed up with a critique of the rubbish interests people sometimes include on their CVs, and a story from Mr. McHale’s childhood about a trip to Legoland. Doomsday Diana, the flat’s ghost, makes an unwelcome reappearance to answer a listener’s e-mail, before we examine the importance of accents and their effect in the world of business. As if that wasn’t enough, we then look at the problem of people who are too into average stuff, before Alan Merrick rings in to tell us about his date with high maintenance Donatella at Gordon Ramsey’s restaurant in Claridges. Kirsty Young's castaway this week is one of the world's leading interior designers, John Stefanidis. Described as brilliant and inimitable, his work has blazed a trail since the late 1960s. The homes he designs for a closely-guarded list of loyal customers include palaces in Saudi Arabia and log cabins in Aspen, Colorado. His clients will sometimes ask him to design four or five houses for them. He's also designed commercial properties - the public areas in the Bank of England as well as suites at Claridges and Rocco Forte's Le Richemond Hotel on the shores of Lake Geneva. He had a cosmopolitan upbringing. The only child of Greek parents he was born in Alexandria but, from the age of eight, he mostly lived with his aunt and uncle in Cairo where he became a frequent visitor to the Cairo Museum. It was growing up among the teeming, richly scented streets and bone dry heat of Egypt that he became enraptured with architecture, artefacts and the transformative power of light. On coming to England for the first time as a teenager he watched 12 plays in 10 days - and says in spite of the cold rooms and dripping walls of his halls at Oxford, he found the rain and green grass exotic.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: Vissi d'Arte from Tosca by Giacomo Puccini Book: Odyssey by Homer Luxury: Sketch book with lots of pencils.
