Bob Nutting told Jason Mackey he believes he is well positioned to help change the economics of baseball moving forward and a new owner wouldn't have as much say. Nutting thinks he has a good relationship with the commissioners office and has a louder voice for the city. Nutting did not commit to that being a salary cap or floor.
Adam Crowley and Dorin Dickerson react to an interview that Jason Mackey from The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette did the other day with Pirates' owner Bob Nutting.
In this hour, Adam Crowley and Dorin Dickerson react to the Pirates' 10-3 win over the Washington Nationals on Monday. April 15, 2025, 6:00 Hour
Pirates pre-post game host Dan Zangrilli joined the show. Dan doesn't think we see a super quick firing of Derek Shelton if things don't improve by the end of the month. Dan described Bob Nutting as ‘ticked off' because of both on-field and off-field nonsense surrounding the team. Dan doesn't think anyone has a clue of what's going on or what will happen outside of Nutting, besides maybe, a very small circle. Dan couldn't say for a fact if Shelton is hands-off when it comes to working with hitters, since he does carry a hitting background. Dan commented on a few things we heard from Ben Cherington yesterday before the game. The guys questioned the internal projections of the team in 2025 and if the team expected to be this bad.
Are we closing in on the final days of Derek Shelton as Pirates manager? The Pirates were swept this weekend in Cincy and look like a totally hapless team. Shelton holds among the worst winning percentages of any manager in league history that has seen 700+ games. It also oddly seems like plenty of people feel bad for Shelton. The guys referenced the number of players that have gotten worse under Shelton's watch. Do callers feel bad for Derek Shelton? Pirates pre-post game host Dan Zangrilli joined the show. Joe believes this is the low point of the Bob Nutting era. Nutting told the Post-Gazette he believes he's given all the tools and resources to the team to be successful. Nutting said that at a point, it comes to execution.
PG columnist Jason Mackey joined the show. Jason reacted to the survey the Pirates sent out to fans. The guys discussed what the big issue is here – is Ben Cherington not allowed to spend money or is he afraid to do it? Jason doesn't think the payroll was destined to go above $90M, but he thinks Bob Nutting probably wants it around there, and it isn't right now. Jason doesn't agree with Nutting's approach, but he said he'd likely spend more money if he saw more winning. Jason doesn't think making the best offer to a free agent means they will get him and that there are other factors involved.
The Pirates surveyed their fans. They want answers. Are the Pirates an organization that cares about winning? Are the Pirates an organization that cares about their on-field product? You can say the team is prestigious given this history, but it's hard to say ‘yes' to the other questions. Fans gave their takes on the Pirates survey. PG columnist Jason Mackey joined the show. Jason reacted to the press conference yesterday in which it was announced that both Ben Cherington and Derek Shelton would run it back in 2025. Jason thinks it is Bob Nutting just hitting OK to mediocrity. Why does the front office act as if fans are idiots? Jason said there was absolutely people inside and outside of the organization that were ‘surprised' the Pirates brought Shelton back.
Quick recap Michael and William discussed Williams's unconventional approach to investing, emphasizing freedom of thought and unique perspectives. They also discussed various investment opportunities and market trends, focusing on the potential in the marijuana and cannabis industry, offshore drillers, and the global economic landscape. The conversation also touched on the importance of more profound research into investments, the potential of embracing new technologies and markets, and the benefits of investing in their respective organizations. William's Unconventional Investing Approach Michael and William discussed Williams's unconventional approach to investing, which emphasizes freedom of thought and unique perspectives. They agreed on the conversational format of their chat, lasting around 20-25 minutes. Michael mentioned including relevant links in the show notes. The recording then began with Michael inviting William to elaborate on his successful investing business. Nutstock Initiative: Active Equity Investment Strategy William, a seasoned equity investor with a background in multi-strategy hedge funds and family offices, shared his vision for Nutstock, an initiative that has been running for five years. He expressed his desire to bridge the gap between macro geopolitics and stock selection investment thematics, which led to the development of a team of four to five people. They aim to identify exciting opportunities and publish their findings twice to three times a week, with a total fund published every Monday. William emphasized his preference for active equity fund management rather than simply reflecting the index, which he found challenging throughout his career. Investment Opportunities and Market Trends Discussion william's and Michael discussed various investment opportunities and market trends. William highlighted the potential in the marijuana and cannabis industry, particularly in companies with economies of scale and low debt. He also mentioned offshore drillers as another area of interest, noting that they could benefit from favorable real and strong day rates. Michael emphasized the importance of researching and not expecting overnight success. The conversation also touched on the geopolitical landscape and its impact on investments. William suggested that life is becoming more like a Netflix series, making it more exciting and unpredictable. Global Economic Landscape and Investing Strategies William discussed his views on the global economic landscape, emphasizing the dominance of Western economies, particularly the US, and the potential for a shift in power to other regions. He criticized the US for its debt and demographic issues and suggested that the rest of the world is now catching up with US technology. William also expressed his belief in questioning and challenging conventional wisdom and his approach to investing, which involves identifying undervalued or underloved companies with growth potential. He mentioned his interest in extraordinary situation stories and small/microcap companies, which he believes could benefit from market catalysts. Mainstream Media Critique and Investment Strategies Michael and William discussed the superficiality of mainstream media and the need for deeper research into investments. They highlighted the importance of understanding the big picture and the potential impact of events on various industries. Williams expressed his interest in engaging high-net-worth individuals and those intellectually interested in markets and geopolitics. He also discussed the potential of cryptocurrencies, suggesting that if not banned, their market cap could significantly increase. Both agreed on the need for more in-depth analysis and understanding of investments. Exploring New Technologies and Investment Opportunities William discussed the potential of embracing new technologies and markets, particularly in tokenization and blockchain. He suggested that young people could consider alternative investment opportunities beyond traditional stocks, such as those offered by companies like Airbnb and Uber. William also emphasized the importance of seeking higher returns, noting that a 7% annual return, including dividends, is a significant achievement over 100 years. He highlighted the potential benefits of this return for young people who may not be able to afford a house or own a car. Discussing Strategic Risks and Investment Opportunities William discussed the importance of taking calculated risks and seeking opportunities for significant returns. He emphasized the need to understand the underlying themes and trends in various industries, such as AI and digital assets, and how they intersect with geopolitics and socio-economic factors. William also highlighted the importance of considering the needs and aspirations of different demographics and how they impact investment decisions. He suggested that investors should not shy away from often overlooked sectors, such as fossil fuels, and should respect the value of companies that generate strong cash flows and buy back their stock. Michael agreed with william's's perspective, noting the importance of understanding the bigger picture and how different industries are interconnected. Energy Infrastructure, Tokenization, and Sustainable Solutions Williams and Michael discussed the future of energy and the role of fossil fuels. Williams emphasized the need for investment in the current energy infrastructure, likening it to a bridge that must be maintained to reach a cleaner energy future. He also highlighted the potential of tokenization in the energy sector, drawing parallels with the success of Tether in the financial industry. Michael agreed, noting the ongoing shift towards hybrid vehicles and the continued demand for gasoline-powered cars. Both agreed that technological advancements and the need for sustainable solutions will shape the future of energy. Investing in Organizations and Nutstuff Overview Michael and William discussed the benefits of investing in their respective organizations. William shared details about his organization, Nutstuff, including its website (www.nutstuff.co.uk), social media presence, and subscription options. He emphasized the importance of celebrating successes and learning from failures.

We hear Bob Nightingale throw cold water on the idea the Pirates could add at the deadline. Ben Cherington said 'you have to be comfortable saying no.' We're frustrated with both Nutting and Cherington failing to greenlight anything and they both have different reasons to be blamed.

A report is out about what we will see Bob Nutting and the Pirates possibly do at the deadline. Does it make you feel differently about things?
A report is out about what we will see Bob Nutting and the Pirates possibly do at the deadline. The front office is reportedly “furious” by things Nutting said a few weeks ago – calling the words “misleading at best.” How much truth is there to the story? Does it make you feel differently about things? Where do we see the relationship between Bob Nutting and Ben Cherington going from here? Is it fractured to a point of no return next season? Baseball writer John Perrotto from Pittsburgh Baseball Now joined the show. John talked about the story he put out there this morning on the report of Bob Nutting saying publicly that he would like to see money spent, but the crew of Ben Cherington saying otherwise behind-the-scenes. John said the implication was that the team would be spending more money than they spent in the last regime, but that has not happened. Does John think the Pirates will be buyers or sellers as we near the trade deadline? What does John make of speculation the Pirates make look to move on from Ke'Bryan Hayes in the not-so-distant future? Should the Pirates still be interested in Jazz Chisholm? John said the club likes Luis Robert, but that is likely a pipe dream.
Adam Crowley and Dorin Dickerson wonder who's going to be held accountable by the Pirates' owner if the team doesn't start to improve soon.
Pirates' owner Bob Nutting and GM Ben Cherington are hinting towards making a big move earlier than any other team in MLB. Do you have faith that they'll actually do something?
Noah was surprised with how encouraged and upfront Bob Nutting was about adding to the Pirates and making moves at the deadline. Ben Cherington has the flexibility to add and Nutting realizes this team can compete.
Even men who are into cuckolding tend to restrict it to their fantasies or to what they think about when pretty aroused. We discuss a man who wants deeply to interact with the penis of another man, until he orgasms at which point the desire recedes immediately. What should he do? Simply remain aroused as long as possible? A woman is tired of turning over when she wakes up to find her partner masturbating in bed while ogling her body. Is this a reasonable reaction? And, what would it be like if the gender roles were reversed? We delve again into a relationship that tried an MMF scenario, only to find that the added "M" gave the female partner way more orgasms than her male partner expected. She says it's not a big deal, but is it? And, how should a relationship proceed when both partners want to be dominant? Afternoons 3-6 on 105.9 The X Second hour of the Show Mark continues hammering the Pirates after the Athletic's article about Nutting that released today. Stephen J Nesbitt from the Athletic who co-wrote the story on the Pirates joins the show to discuss his reporting.
Mark Madden calls out Pirates owner Bob Nutting for once again being the biggest embarrassment to Pittsburgh sports this time for the report on Nutting's insistence that a plan for $8 million to go towards spring training facility upgrades come out of baseball ops rather than Nutting's own pockets despite being worth over $1 billion.
The Athletic published a piece about the Pirates earlier today. The 11-page report by Stephen Nesbitt and Ken Rosenthal dove into the last 20 years of the Pirates under Bob Nutting and everything their fans have had to deal with. Most of the article spoke to stuff most, if not all Pirates fans already know. The main passage the guys jumped to was when Neal Huntington asked for roughly $8M to upgrade the training facilities and Nutting told him it would come out of the budget that is allotted to signing players or extending ones they already had. The guys also discussed the loophole that the Pirates found in the draft that the league later took away – but how badly did that hurt their draft history? The Pirates los their step to continue innovating as a small-market team. The guys also discussed a couple of coaches that got let go after helping turn around promising players.

Aditi Kinkhabwala from the NFL on CBS joined the show. Aditi loves the idea of an older, smart veteran QB that can truly help mold the mind of a young QB – she thinks that is exactly what Kenny Pickett needs. Among the names she threw out there was Jacoby Brissett. The guys asked Aditi what else Pickett needs to succeed in the offense. She said the Steelers have things to sort out – and Mullsy laid out a very interesting trade proposition involving Diontae Johnson. Dr. Nutting emphasizes that it is important to learn PAE in a hospital setting before transitioning to the OBL. He recommends using consistent equipment to help with the learning process. Dr. Nutting also shares his experience with radiopaque beads in PAE and describes the advantages of seeing the deposition of the beads into the gland. The doctors discuss the potential impact of the 2023 American Urological Association (AUA) Guidelines, which for the first time recognizes PAE for the treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and what this might mean for patient volume and interventional radiology training. --- CHECK OUT OUR SPONSOR Varian Embolization Solutions https://www.varian.com/products/interventional-solutions/embolization-solutions --- SHOW NOTES 00:00 - Introduction 03:03 - Impact of New AUA Guidelines on PAE 04:48 - Benefits of PAE for Patients 06:37 - Role of Primary Care Physicians in PAE 08:18 - Practice of PAE in the OBL 19:08 - Role of Urodynamic Studies 22:23 - Challenges of Treating Small Glands 26:11 - Procedure Steps and Techniques 34:19 - Post-Procedure Care and Follow-up 38:33 - The Future of Prostate Embolization --- RESOURCES Management of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms Attributed to Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): AUA Guideline Amendment 2023: https://www.auanet.org/guidelines-and-quality/guidelines/benign-prostatic-hyperplasia-(bph)-guideline Efficacy and safety of prostate artery embolization for benign prostatic hyperplasia: an observational study and propensity-matched comparison with transurethral resection of the prostate (the UK-ROPE study): https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29645352/ NICE - Prostate artery embolisation for lower urinary tract symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia: https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ipg611 Yttrium-90 Radioembolization in the Office-Based Lab: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32800662/ Role of Urodynamic Studies in Management of Benign Prostatic Obstruction: A Guide for Interventional Radiologists: https://www.jvir.org/article/S1051-0443(16)30520-6/fulltext International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS): https://www.urologygroup.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/IPSS-Form-Before-Tx-_-BPH.pdf

Kerry Lutz interviewed William Nutting, proprietor of the financial newsletter NutStuff, who discussed the challenges facing investors worldwide in seeking out good returns, including diversifying away from the big stocks and investing in special situations, small caps, crypto, gold, uranium, commodities, and emerging markets. Nutting emphasized the importance of understanding that the world has changed to a world of positive real rates and that companies that are going to be successful are those that have repaired themselves and are selling products that people need and use increasingly more. He also discussed the potential for investment opportunities in areas with increasing weighting in global benchmarks, such as Saudi Arabia, and the importance of embracing common sense when it comes to investment spending and capital expenditures. Finally, Nutting shared his investment strategy of looking for opportunities in markets that are priced for perfection, such as artificial intelligence and marijuana, and provided information about his subscription-based investment research business and the content it covers.
