Happy Satiated Saturday! A few weeks ago, my husband and I were reflecting on a research study that shows that making around $80,000 a year in the United States is the general amount that leads to emotional wellbeing and safety and anything above that doesn't actually lead to more happiness. When I looked this up, the optimal income name was called the Satiation Point and it suggests that beyond a certain level of income or wealth, additional money doesn't significantly contribute to being happier. I had to laugh at the overlaps in the concept of satiation. Often the way you're relating with food is also the way you will interact with money. You can have fear of not having enough food or money. You can have ongoing anxieties about food or money that never seem to go away. It's constantly shelling out that money and getting nothing for it. It takes discipline and vigilance to spot and eliminate fees for things you no longer need or perhaps never did. Tracking your spending in your bank and credit accounts is the best way to spot useless fees. If you don't keep up with it, you're probably wasting more money than you realize. Many useless fees are quite obvious, however, starting with credit card interest, which now averages around 16%. Some store credit cards may go as high as 30%! Another useless fee is the one you pay at out-of-network ATMs. The average is now nearly $5. That's a lot to pay for a little convenience. Next, you should never pay for a credit report. You're entitled to a free report every year from each of the three credit bureaus, Experian, TransUnion and Equifax. You can get them atAnnualCreditReport.com. Late payment fees. These not only cost you extra money now, but also can damage your credit for years and result in higher interest rates. Checking account fees. Look for a bank that offers free checking with no minimum balancethey're out there. Many credit unions have that option, as well. Overdraft fees will cost you a bundle, too. You can probably opt out of them with your bank. You may also be able to eliminate many shipping fees. If you order from Amazon, you can save money with their Prime option. Convenience fees are also something you can eliminate with a little planning. These are when you buy something and the clerk tells you there's a minimum charge to use a credit card or debit card. Just say no. Unused subscriptions are another money waster. These aren't for magazines that you don't read but for streaming services or other things that you signed up for online. There's a lot of talk these days about cryptocurrency, and I think it's fascinating. I don't have a true understanding of all that, but there is a type of currency that I do take stock of every day. I have my own currency of care. So my currency of care works like this. Some things are very low in value and I call those things, those dollar deals. They are spent very quickly. If a person is calling me to gossip about somebody else that's a $1 deal. They will get 10 minutes tops of conversation. Normally, I'm just listening in and then I can immediately find something else to do. If a person has called me to talk about problems that they have generated themselves, and they don't really want to find solutions... they just want to wallow in their problem for a little while, that is $1 Deal. Again, their currency and time is about 10 minutes. Whenever a person calls me to put me down and talk negative to me, they aren't even getting the whole dollar that is definitely a 25 cent conversation for about two minutes after they tear into me. it's over. I just refer them to my cousin . Youdun know when you hang up the phone and goes Dun dun dun dun dun dun. 1:42 I realized some time ago that if I start thinking about my time like I paid more money, I would be a much happier person. I'm not a money waster and I don't want to be a time waster either. I believe that's a large part of why I'm not really active on social media. Now don't get me wrong, I've done it in the past, but I felt like I was always wasting an inordinate amount of time. There are some great uses of social media, but I was addicted. Once I let social media go, I found time to do more productive things like this podcast. So, the next level of currency I'll talk about is the nifty 50. Now the 50 will get you about 30 minutes of conversation with a few exceptions. So, when someone wants to talk to me about an issue in their life that they really are trying to solve, and they're seeing actual resolution to their problems, I'll give that person about 30 minutes of my time. I do care. Another example I provide is if someone wants to talk about and celebrate anything that happened 2:48 PLEASE FAST FORWARD. in life. Sometimes freinds will call and share news about their child's accomplishments. I am so eager to listen because I love to hear positive people talking about positive things. It's important to me to interject booster shots of positivity in my life as often as possible. The last currency amount of time I want to discuss is the 100 spot. These are the conversations that can last an hour when things start to go beyond an hour, I really become anxious. There's always something that I have to do, and if I'm on the phone for more than an hour, it means I'm probably neglecting something else that needs to be done. These hundred spot conversations are usually super important. These are the talks I have with my kids, nieces and nephews, my siblings and my close friends. I know that it's incredibly important during this time to be connected to the people we love the most. I'm going to admit something here that I'm really not proud of. That is I am truly a hermit by nature. I have to carve out time for these 100 spot conversations because of how important the people are to me that I'm talking with.
