Episode 22: WAKE UP, You're Having Another NightmareHave you ever had a recurring nightmare that you couldn't get to go away or found yourself re-living traumatic events over and over with little relief? 2020 has kind of felt like a nightmare for many with all the quarantining, social distancing and self-isolation. Unfortunately, these factors haven't helped those suffering from PTSD in our country, both among our veterans, active duty soldiers and even civilians. The sad news is that about 20-22 veterans commit suicide every day in our country due to PTSD and depression. On this episode we discuss the very serious topic of PTSD with Retired Master Sergeant and Author, Nate Aguinaga, and Army National Guard Chaplin, Major Lance Sellon, who hosts a Soldier Care 53 forum online. In spite of the stark realities, veterans and active duty soldiers have plenty of reason for hope and our desire at Dudeology is that this episode will help encourage those suffering from PTSD. Nate Aguinaga's third book, WAKE UP, You're Having Another Nightmare addresses head on his experience, symptoms and struggles with PTSD and the positive outlets available to cope and live with it. In Nate's words, "make no mistake about it, I am not crazy!" This is the final installment of his three-book series, detailing the events that led up to his diagnosis. Hopefully, Nate's personal experiences in dealing with post traumatic stress disorder and Lance's helpful insights as a Chaplin can help soldiers and civilians alike to unlock your own struggle with PTSD. PTSD is not just combat related...your story matters. We hope this episode allows you to give yourself permission to talk it out, work it out and find support. In fact, give yourself permission to stop calling it a disorder and start calling it post traumatic stress response (PTSR). Nathan Aguinaga is a retired Master Sergeant who served 20 years Active Duty in the U.S. Army. He served as a Light Infantryman with additional skill identifiers as Airborne, Ranger, Jumpmaster, and Drill Sergeant. During his 20 years of service, Nathan has served three combat deployments to the Middle East which include Operation Desert Storm and two tours of duty in Operation Iraqi Freedom. If you are a veteran, active duty military or civilian struggling with PTSD and/or depression carve out some time and give yourself permission to listen to this episode. The Dudeologist polled no less than three dudes that said their favorites are A Christmas Story or Christmas Vacation, hands down. Most dudes can relate with Ralphie from A Christmas Story wanting a BB gun and being mesmerized by the soft glow of a leg lamp in his front window. As we get older, we start to relate more to Clark Griswold and his passion for wanting Christmas to be perfect even though nothing can go right. Well on today's show, our guest, The Brian Jones, joins the Dudeologists to share his story about how his Major Award turned around his Major Setback and changed the trajectory of his career in the Navy to a career selling leg lamps. Yes, some thought he might shoot his eye out, but Brian kept going and has built a Leg Lamp and A Christmas Story empire. Heck, he was even nice enough to help us spruce up the studio with a new lamp while we drink a few cold one's from The Really Good Beer Stop. Brian started selling leg lamps from the movie A Christmas Story out of his apartment. Little did he realize, the market for leg lamps already existed and would soon take over his apartment so much so that he would need a warehouse. A few years later Brian found himself buying the house from the movie A Christmas Story on eBay for $150,000. Brian eventually got officially licensed to sell all sorts of Christmas movie products like the Red Rider BB gun, Pink Bunny Suits and Moose Mugs.
