Army infantry veteran Tyler Hoover shares the truth about serving in the U.S. Army, going through airborne school, deploying to Iraq, surviving the constant threat of EFPs and IEDs, and trying to come home after war. Tyler opens up to Urban Valor about Army basic training, the culture shock of infantry life, Fort Bragg, the 82nd Airborne, Baghdad in 2008, convoy missions, lead truck gunner danger, post-deployment drinking, losing friends, and the reality of veteran reintegration after combat.Tyler talks about joining the Army after seeing the war on TV, signing an infantry contract, losing his Ranger contract, becoming airborne, getting sent to Iraq, and realizing that some days survival came down to nothing more than a left turn or a right turn. But the most powerful part of this story may not be Iraq itself. It's what happened after. The alcohol. The car crashes. The murders. The friends who didn't make it home emotionally, even when they physically made it back. Tyler's story is a reminder that war does not always end when the deployment does.Chapters: 00:00 - Intro: Crazy Army Stories & Close Calls01:26 - Growing Up in Pennsylvania & Virginia02:21 - Playing in Bands & Learning Branding02:45 - Growing Up as a Cop's Son05:04 - Why Tyler Decided to Join the Military07:46 - Trying to Join the Marines08:26 - Joining the Army Infantry08:45 - Signing a Ranger Contract09:47 - Arriving at Army Basic Training10:51 - Finding Out He Was a Mortarman12:37 - Culture Shock in the Army17:09 - Drill Sergeants, Integrity & War Prep21:58 - Army Airborne School24:03 - Getting in Trouble With an Officer25:50 - The Army Friends Who Never Made It26:28 - Getting Sent to Fort Bragg28:34 - Assigned to the Support Battalion29:42 - Finally Getting Sent to the Line30:23 - Deploying to Baghdad, Iraq30:52 - EFPs, IEDs & Convoy Danger31:58 - Life as the Lead Truck Gunner34:37 - The Left Turn That Saved His Life36:26 - Living Like Every Day Was Extra37:19 - The Photo That Got Him in Trouble39:58 - Coming Home From Iraq40:42 - Losing Friends After Deployment42:18 - Why Coming Home Is So Hard43:35 - Drinking, DUI & Leaving the Army51:14 - Becoming a Police Officer51:57 - Working Night Shift in Orlando52:27 - The Baby Not Breathing Call57:05 - The McDonald's SWAT Call59:21 - The Adrenaline Crash After the Call1:00:37 - Why Police Work Wasn't Like the Military1:02:06 - Getting Kicked Off SWAT1:05:03 - The Clothing Line That Caused Problems1:06:20 - Starting the Anti-Hero Podcast1:08:11 - Turning the Podcast Into a Broadcast1:09:07 - Building a Community for the 99%1:10:23 - Why Regular Veterans Get Overlooked1:12:01 - Smoke Pit Humor & Veteran Culture1:18:07 - Lessons From Military & Police Work1:19:02 - What the Anti-Hero Broadcast Is Today1:20:25 - Final Thoughts on Regular Service Members
Herb Thompson had already made it. He was Drill Sergeant of the Year, on a clear path to a top enlisted career, and could have stayed where it was safe. He didn't. In this conversation with Joe De Sena, Special Forces veteran Herb Thompson explains why he walked away from the secure path to chase the dream he had since childhood: becoming a Green Beret. Herb breaks down fear of failure, why most people talk instead of act, how he survived Special Forces selection without feedback, and what it took to rebuild purpose after retirement. This episode is about ownership, sacrifice, and performance under uncertainty. You will leave with practical rules for taking action, handling discomfort, and building a life around what you are willing to earn. Things You Will Learn: Why ownership matters more than motivation when the goal gets hard. How to break overwhelming pressure into small, winnable steps. Why sacrifice, not talk, is what turns a dream into a result. Tools & Frameworks Covered: Own Your Journey Rule: puts responsibility for progress back on you. Small Chunk Execution: breaks hard goals into immediate next steps under pressure. Sacrifice Filter: clarifies what you are willing to give up to earn what you want. If this episode moved you, don't just listen. Do something about it. Sign up. Show up. Do the work. Spartan.com. No more excuses. Herb Thompson is the only person in Army history to earn both Drill Sergeant of the Year and the Green Beret, a path built on hardship, childhood trauma, and a refusal to quit under extreme pressure. His journey spans combat missions, brutal selection courses, and a post-military identity rebuild that demanded a new kind of discipline. Herb now helps high performers redefine purpose beyond titles through writing, speaking, and leadership development. Interview with Dave Rosenfeld (guitar) from Black Rose Rebellion. New Jersey hard rock band BLACK ROSE REBELLION who are releasing their new album, Hail The Rebel Queen, on May 29th via Pavement EntertainmentCurrent Singles: Hail The Rebel Queen (Releasing May 29th) For Fans Of: Halestorm, In This Moment, Shinedown, Evanescence, The Pretty Reckless Black Rose Rebellion is a modern hard rock band forged from strength, power, and rebirth. The Black Rose itself symbolizes major change, hope, and optimism—core themes reflected in both the band's music and the personal journeys of its members. The rebellion was born in June 2022, when frontwoman Trybe and lead guitarist/co-writer Dave “The RockDoc” Rosenfeld—complete strangers at the time—were each on the verge of walking away from music altogether. Introduced by a mutual friend despite coming from entirely different worlds, their connection sparked an immediate creative rebirth and laid the foundation for Black Rose Rebellion. Hailing from both the northern and southern halves of New Jersey, USA, the band has developed a powerful, genre-blending sound influenced by decades of rock and metal, while maintaining a bold, modern edge. Beyond the music, Black Rose Rebellion represents a brand built on individuality, resilience, and self-belief—encouraging listeners to stand for who they are and what they believe in. Lead guitarist Dave “The RockDoc” Rosenfeld has been a lifelong musician while simultaneously building a successful and highly decorated career as one of New Jersey's top dental practitioners. His precision, intensity, and passion translate seamlessly from profession to performance. Inspired by her husband's ambition and love for music, Karen “Kar Rose” Rosenfeld joined as drummer and co-founder. Her impeccable timing, hard-hitting power, and dynamic, lyrical playing make her the unmistakable heartbeat of the band. Frontwoman Trybe grew up immersed in music, studying piano and clarinet while deliberately avoiding the family tradition of guitar and drums. After a challenging transition following 13 years of service in the United States Army—serving in the JAG Corps, Operation Enduring Freedom, Civil Affairs, and later as a Drill Sergeant—she rediscovered music as a source of purpose and healing. A self-taught vocalist, her voice became her weapon, forging the commanding, powerhouse identity that defines Black Rose Rebellion. Brooklyn-born bassist Michele Mayhem brings a fierce, authentic rock edge shaped by years of live performance. Known for her powerful stage presence and grounded intensity, her experience and energy add a commanding dimension to the band's sound. Black Rose Rebellion came out of the gate strong, performing at some of New Jersey's most prestigious venues and directly supporting artists such as Sponge, Spread Eagle, and other rising national acts. With their debut album set for release in the near future, the band continues to grow its loyal following—The Rebel Army. Moe shares why facilitation isn't just a skill, but an expression of who you are and the gifts you bring to learners. The conversation dives into Moe's five facilitator personas model (the Sensei, Drill Sergeant, Superhero, Confidant, and Jester) and explains how understanding your natural strengths can help you adapt to the learners and create more meaningful learning experiences. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by LMNT, we are joined by Stephen Palazzo, aka Near Miss, an Army veteran, thru-hiker, and peak bagger who has completed the AT, CDT, AZT, and Colorado Trail, summited all 58 of Colorado's 14ers, and knocked out three of the seven summits. This one runs the gambit. Stephen walks us through 24 years of military service, from crossing into Iraq on the first wave of the ground war in 2003 to negotiating with the number two guy in Al-Qaeda over a solitary confinement dispute, to a very geopolitically tangled deployment in Syria. He also shares how thru-hiking became the thing that finally got him to put down the bottle, why post-trail depression hit harder than anything he experienced in war, and a magical moment in the Wind River Range where he locked eyes with a bull moose. And- as Chaunce comes to grips with her impending move, she has made it her mission to make each podcast an ultra-marathon. This one is sure to give you enough content to get through the week (or year). Also, warning: this episode contains discussions of war, combat, death, PTSD, and alcohol abuse. We wrap the show with an article about thru-hiker entitlement, discussing why a Sawyer filter lasts a lifetime but you're supposed to swap a Brita every few months, the triple crown of mountain peaks, a new sun hoody review series, a detailed mailbag about a listener's experience on the San Diego Trans County Trail, and Chaunce schedules an impromptu summit of Mount Rainier. In today's episode of 15:14, Kevin Carson, Executive Director of the Biblical Counseling Coalition, is joined by Nathanael Logan, a US Army Chaplain and certified counselor, for part two of their conversation. Captain Nathanael Logan serves as a Chaplain in the U.S. Army, with over two decades of service across active and reserve components, including a deployment to Afghanistan. He has also served as a Drill Sergeant and a pastor. He holds a Master of Arts in Biblical Counseling and a Master of Arts in Biblical Studies from Baptist Bible Theological Seminary and is a certified biblical counselor with the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors. He serves on the advisory board for Fallen Soldiers Ministries and is committed to the faithful application of Scripture for the care of souls and the glory of God. In part two, they continue their conversation by focusing on the counseling side of military chaplaincy. Chaplain Logan opens a window into what happens when soldiers step into his office carrying burdens of suffering, relational conflict, fear, and confusion. He explains how he listens carefully, looks for spiritual indicators, and seeks to bring the wisdom of Scripture to bear in moments that often feel urgent and complex. The conversation also explores why military counseling often begins as triage, how chaplains differ from mental health professionals, and what young people should know if they are considering chaplaincy as a calling. In this episode of Why Not Wellness, Cat gets real about the things we think and say to ourselves about our bodies… and how the body keeps score, even when we don't. If you've ever: Looked in the mirror and gone straight to what's “wrong” Compared yourself to younger, smaller, “more put together” versions of you Felt like your midlife body has betrayed you …this conversation is for you. Cat talks about: The quiet, constant self-talk we aim at our bodies How your nervous system “hears” every eye roll, every harsh thought, every skipped meal and overworked day Why the body keeps score in tension, fatigue, and numbness, even when you can't remember what you said Common “voices” we carry: the Comparison Voice, the Drill Sergeant, the Inner Critic, and the Ghoster What it looks like to interrupt that pattern with a simple apology to your body How to start giving your body new receipts to keep: moments of kindness, rest, pleasure, and honest gratitude You'll also walk through a short reflection you can do anywhere: Notice the part of your body you've been hardest on Hear the stories and expectations you've placed on it Begin talking to it like a partner instead of a problem This episode is an invitation to shift from body war to body home, one softer thought at a time.

We talk about how internalised pressure can keep the nervous system in threat mode and make recovery from Long Covid, ME/CFS and other health challenges harder, even when we are doing “all the right things”. We explore perfectionism, shame, and control, then land on practical ways to create space and choose small steps that help us feel a bit more okay. • what internalised pressure means and why it matters for nervous system regulation • why stress responses are meant to be short bursts, not a constant state • how external pressures differ from unconscious inner demands • perfectionism in recovery and how helpful practices become overscheduled • self-criticism, shame spirals and the idea of mental self-harm • stepping out of comparison culture and fear-driven fixing • learning to tolerate not knowing and loosening the need for control • using tiny actions and body-based cues to reduce overwhelm Links:Connect with Amy: https://amydavies.co.uk/Message the podcast! - questions will be answered on my youtube channel :) For more information about Long Covid Breathing courses & workshops, please check out LongCovidBreathing.com (music credit - Brock Hewitt, Rule of Life) Support the show~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~The Long Covid Podcast is self-produced & self funded. https://teachhoops.com/ The evolution of practice planning represents a massive shift from linear, repetitive instruction to dynamic, ecological environments. In the "Old School" era, practices were often characterized by long lines, 15-minute "lecture" sessions, and "blocked" practice—where a player would shoot 50 identical jump shots from the same spot with no defense. Modern science has shown us that while this builds "form," it doesn't build "transferable skill." Today's elite planners prioritize "Variable Practice", where no two reps are ever exactly the same. By constantly changing the distance, the angle, or the defensive pressure, you force the brain to "re-solve" the movement problem every single time, leading to more resilient habits on game night. We have moved away from "The Drill" and toward "The Small-Sided Game (SSG)." In the past, defensive "Shell Drill" was a static, choreographed exercise. Today, coaches utilize "Constraint-Led" games—like 3-on-3 "No Dribble" or 4-on-4 "Baseline Trap Only"—to teach tactical concepts. This shift focuses on building "Basketball IQ" and "Perception-Action Coupling". Instead of a coach telling a player where to pass, the environment (the "constraint") forces the player to see the open window. In the mid-season January grind, this prevents "mental stagnation" and keeps players engaged because they are playing a game rather than performing a chore. Finally, the modern practice plan has embraced "Analytics-Driven Periodization." We no longer "run them until they quit" just to prove toughness. Today's plans use the Acute:Chronic Workload Ratio ($ACWR$) to ensure players peak at the right time. Practices are scripted with "Load Management" in mind, alternating between high-intensity "Competition Days" and low-impact "Tactical Refinement Days." Utilizing digital tools—like those discussed in TeachHoops member calls—allows coaches to share practice scripts and film clips with players before they step on the floor. This "Flipped Classroom" approach ensures that 100% of your hardwood time is dedicated to high-speed execution rather than slow-speed installation. Basketball practice planning, evolution of coaching, small-sided games, basketball IQ, constraint-led approach, player development, high school basketball, youth basketball, basketball analytics, load management in sports, coach development, team culture, variable practice, basketball strategy, ecological dynamics in sports, skill acquisition, coach unplugged, teach hoops, basketball success, athletic leadership, periodization for basketball. What happens when danger comes from where you least expect it? Bart Womack dedicated nearly three decades of his life to serving the United States Army, rising to the highest enlisted ranks and leading soldiers in combat, training, and some of the most sacred roles in military service. But one moment forever changed his understanding of trust, leadership, and survival when he became a firsthand survivor of a deadly insider attack carried out by a fellow American soldier. This episode explores the psychological impact of betrayal, the long road to healing after trauma, and how Bart transformed one of the darkest moments of his life into a mission focused on prevention, awareness, and leadership. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Joseph J Fontenot, author of the book Sons of the Arghandab. Joseph “Fonty” Fontenot is a combat veteran who served 20 years in the US Army and retired as a First Sergeant, with combat deployments to Abu Ghraib, Iraq, and the Arghandab River Valley, Afghanistan. Before enlisting in the army, he was a successful musician who gave up his career to serve during the global war on terror. After his year in Afghanistan, he was a Drill Sergeant and won Soldier of the year in 2015. He subsequently suffered multiple career-ending injuries and, despite several years in the warrior transition unit, chose to return to the 101st airborne division. Fontenot earned a bachelor's degree in forensic psychology from Purdue Global University, and recently earned a certification as a Veteran Service Officer or VSO, to be able to continue helping veterans potentially with the VA. In my book review, I stated Sons of the Arghandab is a memoir about his time in Afghanistan. This was not an easy read because conditions in the Arghandab Valley during 2010-2011 were anything but easy. From the temperatures, to the living quarters, to enemy fire, to losing buddies day in and day out ... I can't begin to comprehend what Joseph and his team went through. However, his book will help you get a better understanding of what our military endured and what they continue to endure now that they are back home. By the end of the narrative, you will feel like you know the men Joseph knew, which will have you smiling when things go well and crying when they do not. My husband used to quote "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." I am beyond grateful that there are men like Joseph J Fontenot. What would our world be like without them? As a nation, we need to do better by our returned soldiers, offering them the mental health care they need after seeing such violence and always working on the edge of certain death. Thank you, Joseph, for writing your memoir and helping the world understand what you did. This week on Urban Valor, we sit down with Herb Thompson — the only U.S. Army Soldier to ever earn both the Green Beret and Drill Sergeant of the Year honors.Herb shares war stories from his time in Afghanistan, what it takes to survive Special Forces selection, and how the very Army that built him later tried to tear his career apart from within. For 21 years, Herb led from the front...on the battlefield and in the barracks. But it wasn't combat that almost broke him. It was the fight to defend his name when false accusations and internal politics put everything on the line. This is the story of a Green Beret who gave everything… and then had to fight harder than ever to protect what he built.
Tex writes "I am currently serving in the United States Army as an Airborne Infantry soldier with the 82nd Brigade, stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Growing up, I had several strange experiences in the woods moments that didn't make sense at the time but, looking back now, could very well be connected to Bigfoot or Sasquatch. My most significant encounter, however, occurred in January of 2025 during a field training exercise with my basic training company at Fort Benning, Georgia. What happened wasn't a single sighting, but encounters with what I believe were three separate beings possibly a small family group of Sasquatch inhabiting the forested outer edge of the base. I'd heard plenty of stories about unusual activity on Fort Benning and other military installations, but I never imagined something like this would happen to me especially not with a witness alongside me. During one night in our patrol base, we had contact with two large entities. We fired blank rounds, and things quickly escalated into complete chaos. The following day, while conducting a patrol as a two man team, my buddy Hal and I encountered something large, upright, and covered in shaggy dark reddish-brown hair. It was partially concealed behind a tree at our 10 o'clock position, approximately 50 meters away, watching us as we slowly backed toward our patrol base. We both knew exactly what we had seen. We agreed not to say anything to the rest of the squad at least until our Drill Sergeants called us in for a serious, in-depth conversation. Some of the things they said and implied made it feel as though they already knew what was out there and wanted the incident kept quiet. I would be more than willing to speak with you further about this experience, and it would be an honor to be on the show."

My Senior Drill Sergeant from Infantry School Michael Fletcher, drove all the way up from South Carolina for a podcast and to chase some geese with me. Exactly 19 years ago, I graduated Infantry School on Sand Hill, Fort Benning, GA. Sitting down with him again after all these years was surreal—fun, emotional, and a full-circle moment. We talked about my time at Sand Hill, deployments, and even had surprise messages from guys who graduated with me. This podcast means alot to me to share with the world. I've had alot of great mentors but Mike really established a great foudation for my military career but also how achieved my goals. He taught me to never quit. Thank you to all my fellow Platoon members that sent videos in for Mike!

Sadly, 22 vets per day commit suicide, approximately 67,500 vets are homeless and thousands struggle with everyday life after service. What we hope to accomplish is providing a fun place to gather that will have a similar feel to the conversations that happen at the VFW or American Legion between vets. Since the latest generations of vets are not really going to these places anymore, we are making it happen online. We believe that the sense of community will help some who struggle, while providing stories about the good times that we can all laugh at!An additional part of this show is capturing the oral history of the military over the past few decades, so if you happen to know a veteran who served during WW2, Korean War or Vietnam eras, we would love to hear from them. Obviously, we want to hear stories from all eras, but we have special respect for the older generations.

War and Trauma US Army In Kuwait, Before The Invasion of Iraq. In the early morning darkness of March 23, 2003, just three days after the official start of the Iraq War, a shocking act of violence erupted, not from an outside enemy, but from within the ranks of the U.S. Army. It was an act that forever changed Command Sergeant Major (Ret.) Bart Womack’s life, and would later become the central focus of his gripping book, Embedded Enemy. Stationed at Camp Pennsylvania in Kuwait, the Headquarters of the 101st Airborne Division was making final preparations for the invasion of Iraq. But that night, as soldiers tried to rest before crossing the border, an explosion shattered the calm. A grenade was tossed into a tent. Seconds later, gunfire rang out. Smoke, confusion, and panic followed. Follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms “I knew we were in the land of not quite right,” Womack recalled in a recent interview. “And that was a not quite right grenade that, for some reason, there were sparks before it exploded.” The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast episode is available for free on our website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. “We’re under attack.” Womack and a fellow officer acted quickly, rushing to alert their colonel and evacuate the tent. “Just like that, it was pitch dark, and the tent was filled with smoke,” Womack said. “I shook the commander vigorously until he woke up, and I was shouting, ‘Get up. We’re under attack.’” The attacker? A fellow American soldier, one of their own, who had sworn the same oath to defend the Constitution. Two officers were killed. Fourteen others were wounded, six of whom were evacuated and never returned. The emotional and psychological trauma from that night continues to haunt many of the survivors. Look for supporting stories about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium, Newsbreak and Blogspot. From Battlefield to Healing Ground, War and Trauma US Army In Kuwait, Before The Invasion of Iraq. Womack, a decorated Iraq War veteran with two Bronze Stars (one for valor), the Legion of Merit, and the Army Ranger Tab, now devotes his life to helping others recover from the trauma of war. After 29 years of service in the U.S. Army, including assignments as a Drill Sergeant, Ranger Instructor, and Sergeant of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, he has turned his focus to serving veterans in new ways. Now a resident of Pittsburgh, Womack holds a B.S. in Business Management from Park University and an MBA from Waynesburg University. He serves as the Program Manager for Onward to Opportunity, Pittsburgh, a Syracuse University initiative that equips transitioning service members and veterans with career training and support. Follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms But perhaps his most passionate endeavor is as Co-Founder and COO of the Armed Forces Equestrian Center (AFEC), a nonprofit that offers equine therapy to veterans, military families, and individuals with disabilities. “I’ve seen firsthand how trauma can follow our warriors long after the war ends,” Womack said. “Horses have an incredible ability to help people reconnect, rebuild trust, and find peace.” A Voice for the Silenced In his memoir, Embedded Enemy, Womack details the chaos and heartbreak of that fateful night in Kuwait. It’s a story not just of violence and betrayal, but of resilience, leadership, and the unbreakable bonds forged in war. The book is available on major platforms Amazon, and Womack often shares his story on news outlets, podcasts, and across social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram*, and X (formerly Twitter). The interview is available as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast website, also available on platforms like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and most major podcast outlets. “Talking about it continues to be therapy for me,” he admitted. “I live it every day, but telling the story reminds me that we made it through, and that maybe someone else out there will find strength through our experience.” War and Trauma US Army In Kuwait, Before The Invasion of Iraq. Beyond writing, Womack also works in the entertainment industry as an actor and military technical advisor. He has appeared in several film and television productions and recently spent 18 months in Afghanistan training the Afghan National Army. His reach is global, he has even contributed to training missions in Nigeria as part of the Africa Contingency Operation. A Legacy of Leadership CSM (Ret.) Bart Womack’s military career spanned decades and continents, but his leadership continues off the battlefield. He sits on the board of the *Veterans Media Corporation*, is an Executive Producer at The Veterans Channel, and regularly mentors Army ROTC cadets. Check out the show on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms In October 2020, his ongoing service was recognized when he was knighted into The Order of St. George, Grand Priory of Canada and the Americas. His evaluations from active duty describe him as “the standard by which others are measured,” and his life’s work continues to embody that high bar. For more insights, the free episode of the "Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast", is available on their website for free in addition to Apple Podcasts and Spotify, as well as through other podcast platforms. Whether through his book, podcast appearances, or his work in therapy and transition programs, Womack’s message is clear: the war doesn’t always end when the fighting stops. Are you frustrated trying to figure out how to teach your kids to work? If you're like me, you bounce around between different systems that are “going to work this time” and feel exasperated when they don't. I don't want to be a drill sergeant, but I also know it's important that my kids grow up with a good work ethic! How do I find the right balance!!?? Thankfully, I was able to interview Danielle Porter. Danielle is a mother of six and someone I admire deeply because she's so careful and intentional in everything she does. I asked Danielle to come and teach me about teaching our kids to work, and to be honest, I was surprised by what she had to share! I hope you find her takeaways as helpful as I did!
