First: how Merkel killed the European dream ‘Ten years ago,' Lisa Haseldine says, ‘Angela Merkel told the German press what she was going to do about the swell of Syrian refugees heading to Europe': ‘Wir schaffen das' – we can handle it. With these words, ‘she ushered in a new era of uncontrolled mass migration'. ‘In retrospect,' explains one senior British diplomat, ‘it was pretty much the most disastrous government policy of this century anywhere in Europe.' The surge of immigrants helped swing Brexit, ‘emboldened' people-traffickers and ‘destabilised politics' across Europe. Ten years on, a third of the EU's member states within the Schengen area have now imposed border controls. Can freedom of movement survive in its current form? Lisa joined the podcast alongside Oliver Moody, Berlin correspondent for The Times. Next: the cultural impact of the railways It's been 200 years since the world's first public train travelled from Shildon to Stockton – across County Durham. Richard Bratby argues that this marked the start of a new era for Britain and the world: ‘no invention between the printing press and the internet has had as profound a cultural impact as the railways'. How can we explain the romantic appeal of the railways? Richard joined the podcast to discuss, alongside Christian Wolmar, author of over twenty books about the railways including The Liberation Line. And finally: who is the Greatest Of All Time? What do Lionel Messi, Roger Federer and Tom Brady have in common? Their acolytes would argue that they are the GOAT of their sport – the Greatest Of All Time. Why are fans so obsessed with the GOAT label? Are pundits guilty of recency bias? And does it really matter anyway? Journalist Patrick Kidd joined the podcast to discuss, alongside the Spectator's Sam McPhail.Plus: Madeline Grant asks why not show J.D. Vance the real Britain? What do typhoon evacuations, koala selfies, and second breakfast in Hobbiton have in common? They've all been part of Deacon Bob's adventurous month. After a few weeks apart, Father Dave and Deacon Bob are back, swapping globe-trotting tales, ministry moments, and a surprisingly full slate of sports updates. Bob's recent trip took him from the typhoon-swept Philippines to Singapore, Perth, Sydney, and a bucket-list stop in New Zealand's Hobbiton (yes, complete with hobbit holes, the Green Dragon Inn, and second breakfast). Along the way, he preached to 90 youth leaders just hours after a typhoon hit, met a koala, saw kangaroos, and even met a listener named Rain who drove five hours just to hear him speak. There were plenty of memorable meals, from perfect pancakes to less-than-crispy bacon. Meanwhile, Father Dave stayed stateside, baptizing great-nieces (one walked to her own baptism), speaking at the Knights of Columbus Conference, and making a moving visit to the Blessed Stanley Rother Shrine in Oklahoma City. He shares Rother's remarkable story—from failing Latin in seminary, to obeying his bishop's call to return to Guatemala, to his martyrdom in 1981—and the beauty of a shrine built right in the heart of the city it serves. Sports fans get plenty too: the debut of MLB's first female umpire Jen Pawol (including her Hall of Fame–bound first pitch), Tom Brady's towering new statue, and even a trivia challenge about the University of Michigan making draft history. Naturally, there are detours, including CGI vs. AI, bad sports statues, and ministry moments that transcended cultural boundaries. But through it all, the heart stays the same: joyfully sharing the Gospel, wherever God sends you (even if it's to a sheep paddock in New Zealand). Highlighted Sections (00:00) Sports, Schedules, and Saying Goodbye The guys open with bittersweet news about the podcast winding down, why recording has gotten harder, and an invitation for listeners to share favorite memories. They then go into the week's light sports slate and review the new Superman. Even with the end in sight, their trademark banter is alive and well. (05:41) Football, Statues, and Sports Trivia Deacon Bob previews a Buccaneers-Steelers preseason game while Father Dave looks forward to Steelers training camp. They discuss Tom Brady's towering statue and celebrate Jen Pawol historic debut as MLB's first female umpire. The segment wraps with a trivia challenge about a university making draft history in all four major leagues. (15:44) From Typhoons to Hobbit Holes Bob recounts ministry in the Philippines, Perth, and New Zealand, including speaking to youth leaders after a typhoon and connecting with alumni abroad. He describes walking through the Shire set from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, complete with hobbit holes and the Green Dragon Inn. Jenny may not be a huge fan of the films, but even she found the tour magical. (23:42) Sydney, Koalas, and the Ends of the Earth From welcoming bishops to preaching across cultures, Bob reflects on moments when the Holy Spirit's anointing was tangible. He shares encounters with young adults, a koala, and a listener who drove five hours to hear him speak. Each stop reaffirmed the universal joy of sharing the Gospel. (25:42) Baptisms, Knights, and Blessed Stanley Rother Father Dave talks about baptizing his great-nieces and representing Franciscan University at the Knights of Columbus Conference. He shares the moving story of Blessed Stanley Rother a missionary priest martyred in Guatemala, and describes visiting the shrine dedicated to him. The witness of Rother's courage and devotion left a lasting impression. (32:37) Feast Days and a Chapel Blessing Looking ahead to the Feast of the Assumption they pray for peace amid global tensions. Father Dave previews the blessing of Franciscan University's newly renovated Christ the King Chapel, while Bob outlines upcoming speaking engagements. The conversation closes with anticipation for the start of the school year. In this episode, author Stephen Puleo is helping us place Bostonian Charles Sumner on the "starting five" of American history. Oh, and then there's the caning. Puleo's new book, The Great Abolitionist: Charles Sumner and the Fight for a More Perfect Union, is out now, and don't miss his Italian restaurant recs at the end of the ep. Hour 3 kicks off with Tobin rattling off some headlines that spirals into a conversation about championship games being recorded on VHS, Tobin thinks it is a lost art form and wants to bring it back! The segment somehow becomes about an ass chicken contest, as Tobin gives us his best clucker impression, a truly confusing moment to say the least. Tobin tries his luck again with Leroy as he brings up the QBs list but this time disguises it as why Tua was ranked where he was… Leroy once again spirals. We then get into our Mixes bag as we hear from Sean McVay, Mike Vrabel, and Michael Irvin. Does the Tom Brady Statue really look like him, huge discussions had by the gang, Tobin claims it looks more like Brock Purdy!
It's a glorious Tuesday—until someone in engineering ruins it by giving Tobin a hotkeys button, which no one, especially Leroy, is happy about. The gang reacts to Taylor Swift appearing on the New Heights podcast, and Tobin strikes a nerve with Jfig and Brittney by claiming her last album wasn't very good. He then continues his hotkey antics and riles Leroy up with Bill Simmons' QB rankings, before closing the hour with bizarre comparisons involving Simone Fontecchio, Kawhi Leonard, and gondolas. Hour Tua kicks off with Dolphins talk and injury updates, including a lingering question: will it ever click with Cam Smith? Tobin once again brings up QB lists, triggering Leroy into an audio-only rage. "Damage Is Done" gets derailed as the crew reminisces about Tobin at a trampoline park, ending the hour in pure silly sauce. Hour 3 spirals quickly from Tobin's headline run into a nostalgic VHS discussion about recording championship games—a lost art, according to Tobin. This somehow segues into an "ass chicken contest," with Tobin delivering a wildly confusing clucker impression. He tries to sneak in the QB list conversation again under the guise of discussing Tua's ranking, and Leroy spirals once more. The crew dives into audio clips from Sean McVay, Mike Vrabel, and Michael Irvin, before a heated debate erupts over whether the Tom Brady statue actually looks like him—Tobin swears it resembles Brock Purdy. Hour 4 opens with continued statue bickering, as the gang fails to reach consensus but engages in plenty of quibbling. Mike McDaniel's comments on team bonding somehow lead to Leroy denying he's a snacker—widely considered the most boxed moment in the show's history. The hour wraps with chaos as Tobin celebrates the Heat's preseason opener being held in Puerto Rico, yelling down the hall to Len for permission to go—only to get a swift, crushing "NO!"
We begin the hour a continuation of the discussion that plagued the last hour, does the Tom Brady statue look more like Brock Purdy? There is no definitive agreement on the topic, but quibibling definitely took place! We hear from Mike McDaniel on how the team is bonding, and somehow that spirals into Leroy lying about being a snacker, the most boxed moment in the show's history. We finish out the hour with LOTS of yelling, Tobin is pumped that the Heat's first preseason game versus the Magic will be played in Puerto Rico, and yells down the hall to Len to please let him go, he got a swift NO!

RUNDOWN Mitch and Hotshot recap the Mariners' Ichiro celebration weekend, praising the team's tribute while questioning the odd inclusion of Tom Brady in the video montage—especially after deliberately omitting Alex Rodriguez to avoid boos. Episode 346's “area code spotlight” on Houston's, highlights a long list of famous residents and musical talent from ZZ Top and Kenny Rogers to Beyoncé and Travis Scott. Mitch and Hotshot marvel at the Mariners' blistering run—seven straight wins, 13 games over .500, and now just a game behind the Astros with 43 to play. With stars like Gino Suarez yet to heat up and pitching still not at peak form, the duo wonders just how high this team's ceiling might be. In this Mariners No-Table, Mitch, Joe Doyle, and Brady Farkas break down Seattle's 9–1 homestand, surging offense, and remarkable lineup depth even with Gino Suarez and Cal Raleigh struggling. They debate bullpen concerns—especially Andres Muñoz's command—plus looming roster decisions with Luke Raley and Victor Robles returning. Jacson Bevens joins Mitch for some key takeaways from Seattle's preseason opener, spotlighting rookie WR Tory Horton's strong debut, dynamic fullback usage, and a cleverly schemed interception that showcased Mike Macdonald's defense. They discuss the ceiling and depth of the defense, the roles of Kenneth Walker and Zach Charbonnet, and the need for top performances from CBs Riq Woolen and Devon Witherspoon. In this re-aired classic, John Tesh tells Mitch the now-famous story of how “Roundball Rock” was born, from humming the tune into his answering machine in Europe to bringing it to life in the studio. He shares behind-the-scenes details about working with NBC, the song's enduring legacy, and his surprise at how deeply it has embedded itself in basketball culture.
