The 911 Heroes Run is returning to Annapolis on September 18, 2022 at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The 5K run was established to honor the legacy of Naval Academy graduate 1st LT Travis Manion who was killed in action in 2007. Today, the run, handled by the foundation that bears his name,  serves as his legacy and an honor to our local veterans, their families, and first responders. This year, more than 40 separate runs support the Foundation across the globe. Walk it, run it, or ruck it. Or just come out and cheer on those who are running on the 19th.   Today, we spoke with Natanya Levioff, the volunteer Race Director for the Annapolis race, to better understand who Travis was, how his family is carrying on his legacy, and how his now-well-known phrase "if not me, then who?" came to be! Natanya has a unique perspective; she is the announcer for Navy Wrestling, sponsor mom, and she knew Travis while he was at the Academy! Have a listen! The American Heroes Run was the brainchild of David Clark who created the race based on the motto of "Patriotism Without Politics." The race honors first responders, military service people and veterans, the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and of course, David. It will take place on Sept. 9-10, 2022 at beautiful Rogers Grove Park in Longmont, Colorado. Distances are 5K, 9.11-miles, half-marathon, marathon, 9 hours and 11 minutes, 24 hours, and 100 miles. The course is a flat, very fast 1.05-mile loop that is half paved and half packed dirt. This means that every 1.05 miles runners will pass the fully-stocked aid station, bathrooms, and their own supplies as needed. All runners will receive a beautiful, patriotic-themed shirt. Finishers will receive an exclusive coin that David designed, and 100-mile finishers earn a commemorative belt buckle. Listen to this episode and you will learn about a $15 off discount code good through May 31. Come on out and enjoy a beautiful Colorado race! On the heels of a great sports weekend, I have a challenge for some of you.  We are approximately two months away from the American Heroes Run, races that were begun 12 years ago by David, which I took over directing last year in Longmont CO, just east of Boulder.  We had a great turnout despite Covid, and we're expecting an even more awesome event this year.  David began the American Heroes Run to honor first responders, military servicepeople and veterans, and those lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001.  The splendid motto of the races is “Patriotism without Politics,” something I think we can all embrace.  In true David fashion, there are 9/11 tie-ins with the race distances as well as the start times.  For instance, the half-marathon begins at the time the first tower of the World Trade Center was struck, the 9.11-mile run begins when the second tower was struck, and the 5K begins when one of the hijacked planes plowed into the Pentagon.  Distances include 5K, 9.11-mile, half-marathon, marathon, 9 hour and 11 minutes, 24 hours, and 100 miles.  There is also a virtual option.  Sign-up for any race and get a race shirt, finisher award, and certificate.  You can register for any distance at https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=85175So here's the challenge.  Let's get your summer running goals in gear!  I'm looking for 10 runners to do the American Heroes Run Challenge.  There will be two categories.  The first is Couch to American Heroes Run.  You can be starting from ground zero up to being capable of completing a 5K run.  Our goal will be to get you to complete the 9.11-mile run or half-marathon, either in-person or virtually.  The second category is Couch to Marathon or more.  Not literally from the couch, but getting you to ramp up to completing either the AHR marathon, 24-hour, or 100-miles.  Since we're starting this right after Independence Day, the cost is only $76 per month.  You'll receive personal coaching from me, 50% off any of the AHR races, which is worth anywhere from $25 to $87.50, and a copy of your choice of one David Clark book, either Out There, Broken Open, or Eat Shit and Die.  A great value for sure.  But I will take only 10 runners, so reach out to me ASAP to join the challenge.  Bill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlorAmerican Heroes Run registration:https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=85175

The first Baltimore 9/11 Heroes Run takes place Sunday, Oct. 1, at the Inner Harbor — dedicated to Chief Petty Officer 1st Class Xavier Martin, the young sailor from Halethorpe whose promising career was cut short in June when the USS Fitzgerald collided with a container ship off Japan. Today on the show: Race director Pat Cappelaere and his wife, Doreen, talk about the race and their daughter — Navy pilot Lt. Valerie Cappelaere Delaney, a Howard County native and Naval Academy graduate who died during a training mission outside Spokane, Washington in 2013. The race is sponsored by the Travis Manion Foundation, named for a Marine and Annapolis graduate who was killed by sniper fire in Iraq in 2007. The foundation supports veterans and Gold Star families like the Cappelaeres and hosts community service programs with the aim of developing future leaders.Links:http://www.travismanion.org/community-engagement/911-heroes-run/2017-baltimore-md/http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/bs-md-halethorpe-sailor-killed-20170619-story.htmlhttp://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/bs-md-valerie-cappelaere-delaney-20160905-story.htmlhttp://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/bs-md-valerie-cappelaere-delaney-20130312-story.htmlhttp://www.travismanion.org/our-story/
