In This Episode You Will Hear: • People don't believe me when I tell them that the first time that live bullets were coming my way – it was uneventful. (6:27) • When I went to Jumpmaster school, it was easy because 18 Delta just drove that process into me. (11;07) • In 2000, we found out that my mother was one of 17 heirs to 160,000 acres of land and gold. (13:40) • I thought being on the Teams and running hard was what I was supposed to do. I realize now that family matters. (16:49) • We're all gonna do a swim test to qualify for SEALS or diver. Hey, we're gonna do the sidestroke. And I'm like “What's the sidestroke?” I'd never even heard of the sidestroke. (22:34) • I don't see myself as cool. I just see it as something I did. Every time I do something else, I'm not gonna quit. If I commit to it, I'm gonna do it to the best of my ability. (28:22) • You matter, and you can do it. You choose if you're gonna let them beat you down, or motivate you. You can do it. (32:17) • No one could hurt me more than my mom. (32:26) • I actually lied and said I spoke Spanish. That's how I got to Team 4. (36:19) • AIDS was huge back in the 80s and 90s. AIDS is gonna kill you. You couldn't do mouth-to-mouth unless you had a pocket mask. (43:44) • [Melanie] Q: Your total service time is what?  A: 35 ½ years. (65:44) • II you go make and look at all the decisions I made, all but one, to go to the CIA, that was the only one where “I gotta get back to war. My brothers are there. “All the rest of ‘em were, “I wanted to provide. I wanted to be a good husband. I want to be a good dad. (81:05) • When I interviewed with Walmart, there's five of ‘em sitting there, and they're asking me questions. And they're like “What are your goals here at Walmart?” And I'm like “Well, I want to be a soccer dad.” And they started laughing. (81:22) • [Marcus] Some guys have to switch into the life. We're always in it. (91:34) • You don't have to be like me. Just be the best at what you say you are. (94:38) • Don't take a space that someone else wants, if you have no intentions on going and doing what you took the oath to do. (94:51) • [Some guys get it the easy way, just living they get it. Some of us have to go out and bleed for it. Joining me today is Army MAJ (Ret) Ruslan Emelyanov. Ruslan was born and raised in the former Soviet Union.  When he turned 18, he was conscripted into the Soviet Army in 1989 and chose to be a Paratrooper.  Over the next couple years, he accepted an invitation to attend the newly formed Russian Military Academy.  He graduated in 1995 and was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Russian Army.  He had also earned his Jumpmaster status at that time.  His first assignment was to join his new unit already fighting in the First Chechen War.  At the conclusion of the war, his unit redeployed in December 1996.  Ruslan was then reassigned to Moscow and transferred to the Military Police.  In 1998 as a Captain, he resigned his Commission and left the Russian Army. Family relatives who lived in California applied for a Green Card for Ruslan, and in 2000, he joined his relatives in Carmel, CA.  When the Sep 11th attacks occurred in 2001, he contacted an Army recruiter about the possibility of joining the U.S. Army.  The recruiter said he could enlist with a Green Card and signed him up as an 11B Infantry MOS.  At 28, he attended Basic Training at Ft. Benning, GA.  After graduating Basic, he attended Jump School and earned his U.S. Parachute Badge.  His first assignment was to B Co., 2/35th Infantry at Schofield Barracks, HI.  In 2003, he renounced his Russian citizenship and was sworn in as a U.S. citizen.  In April 2004, his unit deployed to Afghanistan for a year tour.  Upon returning, he was promoted to SGT.  He also earned Jumpmaster in the U.S. Army.  A few years later, he was recommended for OCS at Ft. Benning, and in 2007 he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Infantry.  In 2009, Ruslan changed branches to Civil Affairs and spent the next 12 years working with Special Operations Forces out of Ft. Bragg, NC.  He retired from the Army in 2023.

Transformational Leadership with Dr. Peter VanAmburgh Scarlett and Dr. Peter VanAmburgh discuss incorporating transformational leadership into all aspects of our lives including schools, homes, and communities. By being the first to 'step off' which is the origin of the concept, leaders can facilitate positive change, inspire, motivate and cultivate trust. They discuss how to facilitate change within an organization, positive attitudes and engagement. Using leadership theory and illustrative stories from Dr. VanAmburgh's military experience, the audience will understand how to incorporate Dr. VanAmburgh's philosophy of leadership: "A leader's role to help make other people successful." Words+Actions=Truth. Tremendous conversation and much needed to learn how to overcome resistance and transform culture. Dr. Peter VanAmburgh started 1Mission Leadership when he retired from the U.S. Army as a Colonel after 28 years of demanding leadership assignments in Long Range Surveillance, Special Forces, and Intelligence units. He holds a Doctorate in Organizational Leadership from Argosy University, Master's degrees from Kennesaw State University and the U.S. Army War College, and is a graduate of a host of military schools including Special Forces, Ranger, Jumpmaster, HALO, and the Counterintelligence Special Agent course. He has the benefit of possessing unique technical competencies as well as experience leading large organizations and highly skilled multinational teams in combat operations, humanitarian missions, and other activities in over 15 countries around the world. In addition to his military service, he also served as police officer for three years, worked in various industries for five years, and has over six years of teaching experience at undergraduate through doctoral level. His work bridges the strategic to the tactical, and his teaching is as valuable for senior executives as to their first line supervisors. He is a master at strategic planning, deciphering culture, and developing action plans that deliver results. He is also a lifelong learner who lives his favorite mantra, “If you are not getting better – you must be getting worse.” His passion is passing on the hard-learned lessons from the battlefield, boardroom, classroom, and the street, to the next generation of global leaders. They about his latest book, Angels Against the Sun: A WWII Saga of Grunts, Grit, and Brotherhood (Regnery, 2023), which chronicles the 11th Airborne Division, nicknamed "The Angels," and their campaign. A bit about the book:  The Pacific theater of World War II pitted American fighting men against two merciless enemies: the relentless Japanese army and the combined forces of monsoons, swamps, mud, privation, and disease. General Joseph Swing's rowdy paratroopers of the 11th Airborne Division-- nicknamed the "Angels"--fought in some of the war's most dramatic campaigns, from bloody skirmishes in Leyte's unforgiving rainforests to the ferocious battles on Luzon, including the hellish urban combat of Manila. The Angels were trained as elite shock troops, but high American casualties often forced them into action as ground-pounding infantrymen. Surviving on airdropped supplies and reinforcements, the Angels fought their way across nearly impassable terrain, emerging as one of the most lethal units in the Pacific War. Their final task was the occupation of Japan, where they were the first American boots on the ground. Angels Against the Sun is an unforgettable account of the liberation of the Philippines. In the tradition of Band of Brothers, historian and former paratrooper James M. Fenelon offers a grunt's-eye view of the war. This is a soldier's history at its best. Annika Nordquist is the Communications Coordinator of Princeton University's James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions and host of the Program's podcast, Madison's Notes. Their final task was the occupation of Japan, where they were the first American boots on the ground. Angels Against the Sun is an unforgettable account of the liberation of the Philippines. They about his latest book, Angels Against the Sun: A WWII Saga of Grunts, Grit, and Brotherhood (Regnery, 2023), which chronicles the 11th Airborne Division, nicknamed "The Angels," and their campaign. In times of high stress, we want fast answers.  As leaders we feel the pressure be decisive.  But fast is not always best, and can sometimes lead us deeper into trouble. What we need is rapid deliberation.  With a little help from Wyatt Earp, and people who jump out of airplanes for a living, here's what I think that means, and how we can put it to work for us.Notes and Resources:Prefer to read?  Here's the full post:  Rapid Deliberation: 7 Ways to Hit the Target While Under StressIn The Slow Fix Carl Honore digs even more deeply into how to be deliberately rapid. For more on what to do when crisis hits, check out:  How to Respond to Crisis:  Four Steps for LeadersWell-written The After Action Reviews  are a great resource to help leaders anticipate potential problems and prepare for their likelihood. Episode 22: WAKE UP, You're Having Another NightmareHave you ever had a recurring nightmare that you couldn't get to go away or found yourself re-living traumatic events over and over with little relief? 2020 has kind of felt like a nightmare for many with all the quarantining, social distancing and self-isolation. Unfortunately, these factors haven't helped those suffering from PTSD in our country, both among our veterans, active duty soldiers and even civilians. The sad news is that about 20-22 veterans commit suicide every day in our country due to PTSD and depression. On this episode we discuss the very serious topic of PTSD with Retired Master Sergeant and Author, Nate Aguinaga, and Army National Guard Chaplin, Major Lance Sellon, who hosts a Soldier Care 53 forum online. In spite of the stark realities, veterans and active duty soldiers have plenty of reason for hope and our desire at Dudeology is that this episode will help encourage those suffering from PTSD. Nate Aguinaga's third book, WAKE UP, You're Having Another Nightmare addresses head on his experience, symptoms and struggles with PTSD and the positive outlets available to cope and live with it. In Nate's words, "make no mistake about it, I am not crazy!" This is the final installment of his three-book series, detailing the events that led up to his diagnosis. Hopefully, Nate's personal experiences in dealing with post traumatic stress disorder and Lance's helpful insights as a Chaplin can help soldiers and civilians alike to unlock your own struggle with PTSD. PTSD is not just combat related...your story matters. We hope this episode allows you to give yourself permission to talk it out, work it out and find support. In fact, give yourself permission to stop calling it a disorder and start calling it post traumatic stress response (PTSR). Nathan Aguinaga is a retired Master Sergeant who served 20 years Active Duty in the U.S. Army. He served as a Light Infantryman with additional skill identifiers as Airborne, Ranger, Jumpmaster, and Drill Sergeant. During his 20 years of service, Nathan has served three combat deployments to the Middle East which include Operation Desert Storm and two tours of duty in Operation Iraqi Freedom. If you are a veteran, active duty military or civilian struggling with PTSD and/or depression carve out some time and give yourself permission to listen to this episode. That same year Thomas met up with Jason Everman in New York and by July 2017 the band Silence & Light formed. In January 2019 the band began to record their first album in Van Nuys, California. By October 2019 they had released several songs online and by December of 2019 the band released their first album "Volume One". Perry “DOC” Black was born and raised in the great state of Louisiana in 1965.  In 1983, two weeks after graduating high school, he left for his first tour in the Army.  Perry hated the Army life and left the Army 3 ½ years later and became a steel fabricator in Louisville KY.  After working for 5 years as a civilian, after losing his job due to involvement with union organizing.  He then spent the next six months partying and one morning he woke up staring at the ceiling and decided to return to the Army.  Perry decided he wanted to be an Airborne Ranger and was lucky enough to get a Ranger contract.  Ironically enough, Perry had never heard of the 75th Ranger Regiment and was unaware of the destiny awaiting him in becoming such an influential member of the Regiment. His career as a Ranger started when he arrived in 3/75th in July of 91.  He is a combat veteran of the Battle of Mogadishu, Somalia in 93, which is the inspiration for the famous book “Black Hawk Down”, written by author Mark Bowden, and movie directed by Ridley Scott.  Doc served in 3/75th, from 91-97.  He then went to Task Force 160, where he worked as a Special Operations Flight Medic from 97-99.  He returned to his beloved Ranger Regiment, at 1/75th, from 99-01 as BN Senior Medic.  He was then selected to be the Joint Special Operations Medic Course, Ranger Liaison.  He served as Trauma instructor and later became the first Ranger NCOIC of the Special Operations Combat Medic Course and retired from active duty in 2007.  Some of his awards and decorations include the Bronze Star with Valor 3-Oct 1993, MSM x 6, numerous ARCOM's and AAM's, EFMB, CFMB, Ranger Tab and Aviation Crewmember Wings.  His military courses and certifications include the US Army Ranger School, SERE-C, JSOMTC, Jumpmaster, NREMT-P, Scout Swimmer, JOTC, PLDC, BNCOC and ANCOC.
