Join Samwise for a tender and potent telling of their relationship to the elder tree and the elder's connections to death and rebirth. The elder tree is strongly connected to the winter deity Holda / Holle in some germanic lineages. Winter, the epiphany, January 6th, divination, grief, loss and cycles of regeneration are big themes throughout this episode. Content warning: this episode talks in depth about losing friends to murder, although no graphic details are shared. Join Samwise Raridon, Community Herbalist and Bob and Rebecca of Currents intentional community in Shawnee, Osage, Adena and Hopewell land (colonially known as South Eastern Ohio) for an exploration of the energy of Maple and the joyous and arduous project of making maple syrup. Maple is a tree that evokes an energy of motherly protection, abundance, sweetness and also balance, boundaries and reciprocity. In this episode we explore what it means to get a "no" when approaching a plant (which is actually a gift!) and what it could mean to orient towards giving back to the lands we are on, and especially what it could mean for settlers to give to the land and the people who have cared for the land since time immemorial from whom so much has been taken. We also touch on the sweetness of connection that keeps us going in these generational journeys of restoring healing and balance. In the spirit of moving towards balance and reciprocity, we invite you to join us in donating to the vital educational and coalition building work of the Greater Cincinnati Native American Coalition. A link to their donation page can be found here: https://gcnativeamericancoalition.com Another wonderful and powerful project we encourage you to donate to is the Sogorea'Te Land Trust, a land rematriation project led by Indigenous Women. Join me, Samwise Raridon of Self Heal Herbs, and Karly Ketron of Wise Witch Apothecary as we talk about the regenerative and healing power of Pine. The energy of Pine carries themes of healing big shame, of moving through despondency and of learning to embody healthy and positive masculinities. Big thank you as well to artist and filmmaker Em Harger for contributing their powerful short story at the end of the episode about how the energy of Pine has shown up for them in their life and healing their relationship with their father. Join Samwise Raridon, Community Herbalist and Educator in conversation with Farmer, Birthworker and Fiber Artist Margy Sankey. Together we delve deep into apple magic and cultivation, the power of witnessing birth and how weaving art through all aspects of life gives it that juicy vitality that apples are so well known for. I learned so much interviewing Margy and I hope you do too! Content Warning: This episode discusses histories of desecration around wells and the people who tend them and using rape as a tool of empire building. (No graphic descriptions). It also contains a story about a young girl seeking answers to a devastating plague (that ultimately ends on a hopeful note). Here's a little bonus episode on the healing lore and powers of the waters of life and death and a powerful story that came to me in 2019. I've been thinking about this idea of the necessity of the waters of death (and life!) and it seems a fitting exploration as I witness the deep drought and climate chaos of this time. I hope this episode brings some solace, some resonance and some hope. My apologies that in the story of the Owl Witch I mention there being guardian oak growing in multiple places, and my little California heart forgot that Guardian Oak doesn't grow in Appalachia! I meant Guardian Ivy! I have much to learn about the plant beings there :) Also, here is a link to the Fair Folk podcast I mentioned, which is produced by Danica Boyce. It is a great resource for people of European lineage to reconnect with some of their own lifeways. After spending some more time with this episode, I would have liked to include some advice for Mary to do that vital work of reconnecting to her own lifeways and lineage so that she has the strength and resilience to keep seeking healing and balance. It is so important that colonizer descended peoples do this so that we can remember how to be in the family of things. https://soundcloud.com/fairfolkcast --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Herb at the End of the World is created by Samwise Raridon, community herbalist, teacher and organizer of the Self Heal Herbs Mobile Free Clinic based in unceded Ohlone and Southern Pomo Territory (colonially known as oakland and sebastopol CA). CONTENT WARNING: Please note that in this episode we talk about violence and murder, and do so respectfully, but if that's not a topic you want to listen to right now, it's always ok to come back and listen another time. Join Samwise Raridon and Seed Meyer Minkin for a vulnerable and profound exploration of the power of chamomile. Chamomile, as we discuss on this episode, is really helpful for being with the energy of fear, even really big fear. This episode is a really sweet and tender gift to the world, made of our collective learnings about this powerful but often underestimated plant. Also big thank you to Vanessa Radman of @witch.handz Cimaruta Healing and my mom Susan Nawa-Raridon for sharing their chamomile stories at the end of the episode. And thank you as always to the patrons that make this all happen! Speaking of patrons, this May we are doing a May Membership Drive to grow our support on Patreon! Getting more patrons means that we can keep developing this podcast and do even more work with the classes and the clinical offerings. It lets me give my most joyous gift to this world! Join us for a deep dive into the powerful world of ancestral remembering with rosemary. Our guests for this episode are Community Herbalist and Intuitive Healer Vanessa Radman and Community Herbalist and Wisdom Weaver Rose Rothfeder. Together we share powerful and tender stories about how this plant has helped us remember how to be human in these bodies in these times. It's a beautiful and vital discussion, just like Rosemary. Also big thanks to our guest stars short story contributors Community Herbalist and Herbal Farmer Bonnie Rose Weaver and Dear Friend and Beautiful Human Anna Frattolillo! Here are some of the land rematriation links we mentioned at the top of the show. I really encourage folks to connect with a land back and/or land rematriation effort in your area. Making a monetary gift is a powerful way to begin reweaving a good relationship with the land and the people who have tended it for time immemorial. It's a beautiful practice to do while we are also healing our relationships with our own lineages. Here are some ways to do that: The Sogorea Te' Land Trust - based in Ohlone land (colonially known as the bay area) https://sogoreate-landtrust.org/shuumi-land-tax/ The Apache Stronghold - based in Apache land (colonially known as arizona) http://apache-stronghold.com/about-us.html The Manna-hatta Fund - based in Lenni Lenape land (colonially known as new york) https://mannahattafund.org/ If you want to check out Vanessa's upcoming ancestral healing workshop (which is going to be amazing!), you can do that here: https://scarletsage.com/collections/classes/products/connecting-with-ancestral-guidance-for-personal-and-collective-healing-with-vanessa-radman-september-29th-6-8pm-pt If you want to submit a short 1 - 3 minute story for the next episode on Chamomile, you can do that here! This is a beautiful and powerful episode about Garlic and the power of accessible healing education with Community Shaman, Family Herbalist and Health and Wellness Educator Jesse Garcia. Jesse shares their beautiful vision of what our relationships might feel like if we all had more familiar connection with plants and how herbs like Garlic might be a way to get to know our own healing powers and abilities to transform and grow into our most magical alive selves. Jesse is based outside of Austin, Texas, which was recently hit by some climate chaos fueled devastating cold weather and is doing beautiful work sharing about how plants and community can support folks in this time. Join the magical Seed Minkin and I as we discuss the enlivening, beautiful and healing qualities of Dandelion. It supports your liver! It helps release anger! It helps you have really really good poops! In this episode we share stories from childhood about dandelion and how it's supporting our bodies now. We also run away from a lawn mower and hide in the bathroom where we tell stories about good poops and sing an ode to the feeling of letting go. We had a lot of fun making this episode so I hope you enjoy it! Also*** Seed mentions the herb pig's weed but they meant to say Purslane! Not sure if you can eat pig's weed, but Purslane is definitely edible and a great source of Omega 3's! Always make sure to identify the plants you plant to eat 100% to make sure they are safe! A sweet exploration of some lore of the Linden tree and how it has helped Samwise forgive and heal some legacies of trauma in their family line. Heads up that this episode acknowledges the existence of inter-generational sexual trauma, but does not include graphic descriptions of violence. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Herb at the End of the World is created by Samwise Raridon, community herbalist, teacher and organizer of the Self Heal Herbs Mobile Free Clinic based in unceded Ohlone and Southern Pomo Territory (colonially known as Oakland and Sebastopol CA). In this episode I get to interview Ben, a wise and funny painter, punk rock aficionado, and philosopher who's currently living at the Here/There encampment in North Oakland. Join us as we spend some time in the camp talking about what it's like living with Covid, how our system of economics is a fiction, how housing is a human right, and that one time a weasel climbed into a particle accelerator.
An interview with Rene Rivera, Dharma Teacher at the East Bay Meditation Center and mugwort aficionado. We talk about the powers of mugwort as a plant, as a beautiful powerful medicine and a vital accessible link to our stone people past. Rene is one of the organizers of the trans and gender queer Monday night sit and teaches with the Alphabet Sangha on Tuesdays from time to time. You can find out more about his work at https://eastbaymeditation.org/.
A talk I gave as part of the California School of Herbal Studies Community Herbalist program on beginning an ancestral healing practice as a white person in the context of white supremacy. Ancestral healing is an important tool for resisting white supremacy and building a more connected, grounded and interconnected world.
