History of the Bay Podcast Ep. 85: Mistah F.A.B. has been at the center of the Bay Area hip-hop scene since he splashed on the scene as the Crown Prince of Hyphy in the early 2000s. Growing up in North Oakland, FAB's parents were in the street life but pushed him towards a different route. This led him to developing his talent as a rapper, putting out his first album "Nig-Latin" through Straight Hits Entertainment with Jazzy Jim and Gary Archer. This eventually led to him catching the attention of Mac Dre, and FAB's debut album "Son of a Pimp" dropped on Thizz Entertainment. This conversation about FAB's early career is like a history of Bay Area rap in itself, touching on artists like Andre Nickatina, The Jacka, Souls of Mischief, Too Short, Messy Marv, and many more. -- For promo opportunities on the podcast, e-mail: info@historyofthebay.com -- History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aa Online Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlA Instagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_one TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_one Twitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_one Facebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone415 00:00 Introduction 05:13 Fab's parents in the street life 14:52 Choosing not to get in the streets 20:10 North Oakland history 24:00 Starting to rap 31:59 Gary Archer & D-Ray 34:09 “Nig Latin” album 38:53 Meeting Mac Dre 46:37 Andre Nickatina 49:40 “Super Sick Wid It” 56:39 “Son of a Pimp” album 58:58 Kanye West, Wake Up Show 1:02:48 “Backpack rap;” Souls of Mischief 1:10:20 The Freestyle King 1:16:12 Freestyle battles 1:21:25 The New Bay & the Hyphy Movement 1:26:54 Messy Marv 1:33:02 Hyphy era hits 1:36:27 Getting banned from KMEL 1:46:07 Ghost Ride It video 1:49:57 The Jacka 1:57:45 Community work --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historyofthebay/support

The mission of law & disorder is to expose, agitate and build a new world where all of us can thrive. But how do we get there? How do we build a world many of us have only seen in our dreams? That's where we believe the artists come in. So, each week we feature an artist, holding down a weekly residency with us, helping us to imagine a different, more liberated world. This week's Artist Resistance in Residence is composer and pianist Kev Choice, who has toured extensively around the world with artists from Lauryn Hill to Zion I and Michael Franti & Spearhead. He also performs his own music, teaches at the Oakland School of the Arts, and has been recently memorialized on a North Oakland mural where he shares a wall with the late Michael Morgan, conductor of the Oakland symphony. sent $$$ this week to Save the Omni Commons.omnicommons.org / gf.me/u/ykrbkt“Four years ago, the collectives that make up the Omni Commons obtained a loan to purchase the building at 4799 Shattuck Avenue in North Oakland. Since then, we have offered event space to the wider community and workspace to collectives on a sliding-scale basis. The Shelter-in-Place order issued in mid-March in response to the pandemic, as well as subsequent restrictions, have prohibited the gatherings that rent our event space and provide half of the income to make our monthly loan payments and keep the Omni Commons open.We have been able to keep the building open for the essential services that some of our collectives provide to the community. Additionally, we collaborated in forming the North Oakland Mutual Aid Drive together with other community organizations. The Omni has become a local distribution site for the curbside and low-income communities, disproportionately people of color, in North Oakland. We’re using our ballroom and entrance hall to gather canned food, water, masks, hand sanitizer and other items, and then distribute these items to those who need them. While the Omni Commons continues to keep the building open for our collectives to offer essential services, we now face a big challenge. In the midst of pandemic restrictions limiting our income, we must refinance the original five-year loan on the building by May 1, 2021. We’re working hard to save enough money to show lenders that we are able to make loan payments until restrictions are lifted and it’s safe to open up event rentals again. So, we’re asking you, our friends and supporters, to make a generous contribution to our GoFundMe campaign to Save the Omni Commons. If you can make a contribution to help us through this crisis, we will thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”DOWNLOAD RECORDINGsubscribe to the podcast here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/5432fun(intro by omar)TV Ugly “Trash Party Island” UCLA Yankee ColaCharlyne Yi “The Saddest Clarinet in the World” Woman of the SeaHot Missoury “Who cooks for you?” Kitchen Folktweedle “kill bros” dear diaryheaPink Grapefruit “Give Me Home” Alien InvasionCellular Chaos “Gaslight” Dirty GirlLily McKown “Leftover Dimes” Count The Death Rate Over The Birth EPMoonfich “Helium Balloon” Moon The FichPac and Seep “One” Cap and PieceThe Pink Noise “Crystal Ball, Crystal Skull” BirdlandGia Margaret “Birthday (demo)” BeforeBeatles HC “Q&A” Beatles HCleor miller “lazy” GIRL (split w/ Francie Cool)Posse “Dream Sequence” Horse BlanketScammers “Love Me Back” love is a rough stone cutStay Cool Forever “hOodie MeLo” Current Songs4 The SeancePower Snuggle “Jack” Cop A FeelingScary Balance “Pretty Things” what’s up, day?dad thighs “sometimes underwater” easy listening

New Life Community Church was birthed in the heart of Pastor Darnell Hammock while still residing in Fresno, CA with his wife and newborn son. The ever increasing reports of homicides and hopelessness in his hometown of Oakland burdened him to action. The hope which is in Jesus is what Oakland needs. While faithfully serving as the Executive Pastor of Pearly Grove Baptist Church, he was blessed and sent to start the God-honoring work of planting New Life Community Church in 2012. After several meetings in the home of Pastor Hammock's parents and prayer walks in the North Oakland community, a launch team of 17 people was formed. To introduce the ministry to the community, four monthly preview services were hosted in the fall of 2012. New Life Community Church officially launched January 6, 2013. The last time I saw Dax Pierson he was on tour with Subtle in support of their genre-defying debut album 'The New White'. I booked them a show at an all ages DIY venue inside of an old schoolhouse by the beach in Manila, California. After the show, we made the 5 minute drive to Arcata and they slept on my floor. On the verge of making major artistic strides. That was in November of 2004. In 2005, while on another tour, driving on I-80 in Iowa, Subtle's 15 passenger Ford van hit a patch a black ice, lost control, flipped and Pierson's seat became dislodged. From this near fatal tragedy, Dax's spinal injuries rendered him quadriplegia. Our conversation took place in his home studio in North Oakland. We talked the past, present and future. We share some commonalities in our health situations. He was very generous with his time. Dax just released a brand new project, his first in many years titled 'Live In Oakland' on Ratskin Records. You can buy it here (portions are used in the intro and outro of this episode): ratskinrecords.bandcamp.com/album/live-in-oakland Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On this episode we answer your questions about investing with a job, using a job as part of your investment plan, flipping, wholesaling, lending, lead generation, getting started, and more! Show Quote of the Week: "Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can." - Cosmos Jeff Lubeski He started investing part time in the summer of 2011 with a fix & flip in Howell. From that first flip, he learned that it is not good to have a next door neighbor who owns 7 large dogs (hard to sell your flip). He purchased his first rental later that year before he finished the flip. Since then, he's completed about 25 flips and currently has 26 rental units. He is also a private money lender on occasion when he is low on his own projects. During the day, he still has JOB of 26 years and looking forward to the day it is only a memory! Mark Tomes: He’s a husband, father of 6 , flipper, buy and hold investor, and occasional wholesaler. By day he's a buyer at an electronics company, by night he buys, fixes, flips, and rents real estate with his family. He sold his most energetic years for dollars per hour and started real estate business as a way to teach his children about entrepreneurship, self reliance, financial responsibility, and making a bit of coin for himself. His best return on investment has been the network, making friends and money at the same time is really fun. His family purchased a horse farm in September of 2018, which was a life time goal. His future goals include more North Oakland county flips, getting into self storage, and retiring while he still have a bit of life left to travel. Eric Friday Father of 2, born and raised in Detroit MI. Wholesaler, flipper, buy and hold investor. He graduated from Henry Ford High school and received bachelors degree from ITT Technical Institute. He worked multiple jobs while in and out of college and started his career as engineer in 2012. He started investing in Detroit real estate in 2015 to get out of the "rat race" and to be able to spend more time with his family. Temescal Brewing also has some events. They are in North Oakland in the Temescal neighborhood. They do a live canning tour called “Fresh Cans” where you can drink a beer just plucked off the canning line. Also they do a “Low and Slow” cookout in their patio space. They try to schedule SF Beer Week events near public transportation. "It goes through the 10th so it's a long week," says Gail. Sam says that Temescal makes beer for everyone, including anyone who lives in Oakland that they want to welcome into craft beer. It is in its third year, after he did He worked for a thing called Brewlab San Francisco, where he met other home brewers who shared their beer and feedback about them. When the SF Chronicle wrote about it, there followed months of chaos as the idea grew. Eventually Brewlab became a community of younger brewers with a homebrew shared space in the Mission district. Then they decided to throw the parties with 500 gallons instead of 5. His sweatshirt says, "Fresh beer, no jerks." That has become their official motto. They are tasting the Citra Ale from Temescal. Gail says it's the nicest example of a hazy IPA that she has had. It has a beautiful orangey finish, at 6.2% alcohol. It has passion fruit and guava flavor. Citra is an example of hops that were developed for their flavor. Some hops are patented strains. Citra was developed here and is grown primarily in the Pacific Northwest. Mark says they used to go to Yakima, Washington, every year to choose hops. California used to be a huge hop grower but today the Sonoma County production is close enough to the breweries so that they can be used fresh, within a day or two of harvest. There is a big calendar on the SF Beer Week website listing their numerous events. Sam Gilbert talks about his background, with San Francisco Brewlab. When he started the brewery it was getting expensive to stay in San Francisco and they found a place in Oakland which was affordable but where there was an opportunity to start a beer community. Steve Shapiro also talks about a site he started called BeerbyBART.com as a way to help people to organize beer adventures and use public transit.

This week on A Waste of Time with ItsTheReal, we welcome Def Jam A&R, Tyga's consigliere and the Bay Area's native son AE to the Upper West Side! One of the best personalities and most genuine young souls in the music business, AE discusses growing up fast in North Oakland and going to school in East Oakland, sharing a room with his sister, playing basketball with bigger aspirations, skating through high school, doing Costco runs with the principal, his group The A'z, winning Battle of the Bay on KMEL, meeting B2K and joining them on tour. We talk about how B2K put the group to work, and how AE set himself apart, the deals that record companies and TV channels offered, how executives were afraid of face tattoos, their popularity all over the world, tensions between group members and management, and why they ultimately broke up. AE gets into meeting Tyga before he was rapping, how Tyga's good energy and his BBC collection made him stand out, how they reconnected after eight or so years when AE was walking in Hollywood and looked above for a sign. We go in depth about rehabilitating Tyga's career, how trusting their friendship is, how Taste - arguably the song of Summer 2018 - came about, and how that led to Def Jam hiring him as A&R. All that, plus his experiences with Young Thug, YK Osirus, Bria Myles, Kanye West, Wyoming, Ryan Coogler, Steven Victor, Valee, Smash Mouth, where he was when the Pusha-Drake beef went off, how he operates as a new music executive, what he's looking for in artists and producers, how he uses emojis in 2018, and much, much more! North Oakland’s Golden Gate neighborhood has undergone a rapid demographic shift over the past decade as many longtime Black residents have moved out and wealthier, younger white people have moved in. This episode features five stories that explore how folks are navigating these changes. Interviews for this episode were conducted by cultural researcher Sue Mark, founder of Commons Archive. To learn more about the “neighborhood memory bank” that Sue is building, visit: http://www.commonsarchive.net/ The woman featured in this episode’s art is Josephine Lee, who was born in Oakland on August 29, 1925. I recently found one of the best examples of managing success and leadership that I’ve read in a long time. It did not come from a scion of enterprise. It came from NFL running back Marshawn Lynch, aka Beast Mode. I found the nugget of wisdom while reading American Way, the inflight magazine of American Airlines. At the time the NFL season was about to begin and the issue was dedicated to all things football. For those who don’t follow football (and for those that are not fans of Lynch/Seahawks, etc. I urge you to keep reading, too), Lynch is the running back for the Seattle Seahawks. He is generally recognized as one of the best, if not the best, running backs in the NFL. His nickname is Beast Mode. Originally given for his running style on the field, it has evolved into something larger than football. It’s more than just a name, it’s a state of being. Lynch provided a prime example of what Beast Mode means when he made this insane run against the New Orleans Saints in 2011. Since then, his fame has grown, and the brand of Beast Mode with him. Many learned more about Lynch from the significant media attention he received during the 2014-2015 season. Lynch often refused to engage in media interviews, being fined by the NFL, and then ultimately answering each question during an interview at the Super Bowl with “I’m here so I won’t get fined.” Some loved it and some hated it. There was a lot of coverage about who his actions and his responsibilities as a player. But few took the time during the hoopla to dig into who he really is as a person. Cue the American Way interview. The article was a deep dive into Lynch as a person off the field. He is dedicated to his community where he grew up in Oakland, CA. In particular, the article connected what the infamous run (aka Beast Quake) means in the larger context of Lynch’s life. The article states: For Lynch, the run represented more than a fabulous football play. The effort and determination it took was a reflection of his effort to lift himself out of a tough North Oakland neighborhood, where he was raised in a single-parent household. “My mom worked three jobs at a time and supported four kids on her own,” Lynch says. “We had no father figure. I never thought about the NFL because I’d never seen it done. That run symbolizes the way that I feel with my life, growing up to my career right now.” Beast Mode worked hard to get where he is. There is no doubting it, especially for the top running back who has spent countless hours in the gym, watching film, enduring interviews, etc. This run could mean the culmination of individual effort to get to the top of his profession. We hear this much in sports, and life generally. An individual’s success is due to their effort, skill and experience. This is not denied. The narrative often stops there. But not with Beast Mode. He elaborated on what the run really means for him: “The significant thing about that play is you will see me doing a lot of work,” he says, “but you’ve got to remember there was an offensive line that beat me to the end zone. There were two receivers making key blocks. As much as people want to give me credit, it was my support system that actually made it happen. When I say that run symbolizes my life and my career, it’s the absolute truth about how I really feel. I’m going to give it everything I’ve got, and if I need help along the way, I’m going to ask for it.” Beast Mode recognizes that his success is more than just his individual effort. It is more than just the effort of his team. It is the effort of those that raised him, previous teammates, and mentors. Without his individual effort he would not be where he is today, true. But he could also be somewhere else were it not for the efforts of those around him. The best takeaway from this story is that Beast Mode recognizes it is not only the important influence others have on his life, or only his own effort that results in his success. It’s the combination of their efforts and his efforts. He could have a great support network but if he ate fast food every day, didn’t train hard, he wouldn’t be in the NFL. He could be a freak athlete, but without guidance and focus and support, he could err and his career over in an instant. It is the combination that makes his success a reality. This perspective is awesome. It makes me cheer for Beast Mode, not as a fan of his team per se, but of him as a person (entity?). I think it is easy for people, anyone, to overlook the contributions others have made that paved the way for an individual's success. He acknowledges it, and even points out that he is not afraid to seek assistance, to ask for help. Those with the spotlight, the high profile roles, are often in those positions for a reason. But their success would be limited without the contributions of others. Success is not possible without individual effort, but more often than not success is not a result solely because of individual effort. And now Beast Mode is using his success to give back to those that supported him. He created the Fam 1st Family Foundation to help his community. Lynch may not have played football without the support of his community. But now football is the medium he uses to make a difference in his community. The cycle continues. There is a lot to learn from Beast Mode.
It's called a gang injunction. A controversial crime tool strategy that some people say should be illegal, and others say is a necessary last resort for communities plagued by violence.
