Copper State of Mind: public relations, media, and marketing in Arizona
There is an urgent threat facing public media in the United States: a proposed federal budget cut that would not only threaten its future, but also "claw back" funding that's already been awarded to public television and radio stations across the country. Read the transcript and notes for this episode on our website. Adrian McIntyre opens with a personal anecdote about the impact of public media on his family, setting the stage for a critical discussion on the ramifications of potential funding cuts. Alice Ferris and Abbie Fink discuss the wide-ranging implications for communities that rely on the rich tapestry of content and services provided by public media. Defunding the Corporation for Public Broadcasting will have far-reaching negative effects. Alice explains how public media also provides educational resources for classroom teachers and the national emergency alert system. She highlights the importance of localized storytelling and the unique programming offered by regional stations in rural and tribal areas. Contrary to the Trump Administration's claims, research shows that public media outlets like PBS and NPR are highly trusted and respected by the majority of Americans. Alice urges us all to reflect on our personal connections to public media and the pivotal role it plays in community and cultural education, and then to take action to voice our support. Here's what you can do RIGHT NOW: go to Protect My Public Media or the American Coalition for Public Radio, where you'll find fast, simple ways to contact your congressional representatives and urge them to save your public media stations. Key Takeaways Public media faces a significant threat due to proposed federal funding cuts that aim to reclaim previously allocated budgets. Public media is a vital national resource, offering educational tools and content to enrich classroom learning experiences, as well as the emergency alert system. Local public media stations, particularly in rural and underserved areas, would be severely impacted, risking the loss of crucial community-based programming and services. The defunding proposal is part of a larger attack on fact-based news reporting by the current administration, which perceives NPR and PBS as biased against the President--despite recent scientific studies proving their trustworthiness and value. YOU can take action TODAY to help save public media, and we encourage you to contact your congressional representatives via ProtectMyPublicMedia.org About the GuestAlice L. Ferris, MBA, CFRE, ACFRE, is founding partner of GoalBusters Consulting with over 30 years of fundraising experience, specializing in strategic planning, campaign development, and public media support. She got her start at PBS Wisconsin, blowing bubbles during Lawrence Welk Show pledge breaks, and now appears on-air for Arizona PBS and national PBS fundraising programs, including Masterpiece. Alice teaches at the University of Denver and is an Associate Member of Rogare, the international fundraising think tank. He also wants to see the new administration embrace higher blends of ethanol to lower prices for drivers. He also talks about cars. With Tesla's Elon Musk in President-elect Donald Trump's Cabinet, how does that change the appetite for flex-fuel vehicles? Inside Agriculture Segment 3
The ethanol industry is angling to be a bigger part of the US decarbonization strategy, but so far, the Biden administration has sent some mixed signals on the issue. For instance, the Treasury Department has made some policy decisions that could provide some big opportunities for ethanol, but the Environmental Protection Agency is slow walking other policies the industry has called for. Brian Jennings, the CEO of the American Coalition for Ethanol, joins the podcast to discuss the administration's recent policy decisions, and outline additional actions the industry is seeking. Stick around after the interview for Jeff Mower with the Market Minute, a near-term look at oil market drivers.
University of Nebraska Economist Cory Walters says in the Farm Bill debate, crop insurance is going to stay, but who should get the money is a question. Beyond the policy picture, Walters tells Bob Bosold that China and Russia are wild cards when it comes to international grain supply and demand. Between the holidays and finances, this time of year is stressful for people. It doesn't help that in the dead of winter, there's downtime to dwell on issues. UW Extension Specialist Joy Kirkpatrick introduces us to a free course that will help turn those negative thoughts into a new focus -- bettering the farm business. Ethanol industry leaders are optimistic about 2024. American Coalition for Ethanol CEO Brian Jennings tells Charitee Seebecker they're facing an oversupply, but the Renewable Fuel Standard and Inflation Reduction Act help expand the market.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ethanol industry leaders are optimistic about the future of the industry and E15. That's according to Brian Jennings, CEO of the American Coalition for Ethanol. He says, “As of now, the Renewable Fuel Standard(RFS) is operating under a rule set by the EPA for the next three years, providing stability and a clear roadmap until 2025. The established mandate of around 15 billion gallons for conventional biofuel through 2025 has also been confirmed.” While there was a desire for more, he says he's optimistic, especially with the Biden administration discontinuing small refinery exemptions, a move perceived to strengthen the RFS trajectory. When it comes to E15, Jennings says they're on a two-track approach and says they're closer than ever. First, midwest governors have petitioned the EPA to permit E15 sales in their states, with tentative approval from the EPA. Simultaneously, legislative efforts are underway, with bipartisan collaboration aimed at enabling year-round E15 availability nationwide. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"...nothing matters in this whole wide world, When you're in love with a Jersey girl..." It was so cool to have Lisa Camooso Miller on the program partly because she grew up just a couple towns over from where Corey grew up in New Jersey! So of course we talked about "my hometown..." We also talked a lot about Lisa's specialty: #communications. And can't we all use a primer on better communication skills? There was so much else we covered such as how Lisa built her career in #politics and #journalism. It all comes down to, as we say in Jersey, "I got a guy" - meaning, relationships. We discussed what's happening in Congress with the Speaker of the House (or lack thereof); how it's being covered; life in a post-COVID world; and we get a peak behind the scenes at how big pieces of legislation actually get passed. Plus, since Lisa has an awesome podcast called THE FRIDAY REPORTER, we did geek out about #podcasting. Lisa Camooso Miller has been a notable communications leader for over twenty years in local, state and federal government posts, political campaigns and committees, as well as advocacy organizations. She is the host and producer of The Friday Reporter podcast. Lisa is a partner at Reset Public Affairs and prior to that position she served as the head of media affairs for the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity. She was previously deputy communications director for the U.S. Secretary of Commerce and the U.S. Speaker of the House. She also served as the head of communications for the Republican National Committee in 2007. Prior to her time in Washington, D.C., Miller served under two New Jersey governors, where she participated in the recovery and rebuilding efforts following the attacks of September 11th.
