Inside Agriculture Segment 3
The ethanol industry is angling to be a bigger part of the US decarbonization strategy, but so far, the Biden administration has sent some mixed signals on the issue. For instance, the Treasury Department has made some policy decisions that could provide some big opportunities for ethanol, but the Environmental Protection Agency is slow walking other policies the industry has called for. Brian Jennings, the CEO of the American Coalition for Ethanol, joins the podcast to discuss the administration's recent policy decisions, and outline additional actions the industry is seeking. Stick around after the interview for Jeff Mower with the Market Minute, a near-term look at oil market drivers.

Beyond the policy picture, Walters tells Bob Bosold that China and Russia are wild cards when it comes to international grain supply and demand. Between the holidays and finances, this time of year is stressful for people. It doesn't help that in the dead of winter, there's downtime to dwell on issues. Ethanol industry leaders are optimistic about the future of the industry and E15. That's according to Brian Jennings, CEO of the American Coalition for Ethanol. He says, “As of now, the Renewable Fuel Standard(RFS) is operating under a rule set by the EPA for the next three years, providing stability and a clear roadmap until 2025. The established mandate of around 15 billion gallons for conventional biofuel through 2025 has also been confirmed.” While there was a desire for more, he says he's optimistic, especially with the Biden administration discontinuing small refinery exemptions, a move perceived to strengthen the RFS trajectory. When it comes to E15, Jennings says they're on a two-track approach and says they're closer than ever. First, midwest governors have petitioned the EPA to permit E15 sales in their states, with tentative approval from the EPA. Simultaneously, legislative efforts are underway, with bipartisan collaboration aimed at enabling year-round E15 availability nationwide. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week's Open Mic guest is Brian Jennings, CEO of the American Coalition for Ethanol. The renewable fuels industry struggled from a number of significant challenges leading up to this year, highlighted by reduced volume demand by the EPA's Small Refinery Exemptions. Jennings says 2020 has brought even more financial hardship including reduced fuel demand from COVID, a crude oil price war and lost export market opportunities. While many farmers and industries have seen financial support from Washington, the nation's ethanol producers have been left out. Jennings shares thoughts on consequences to the industry if Congress remains deaf to their needs. He also discusses renewable fuel as a major issue in the November 3rd election.
Reduced travel miles due to COVID-19 restrictions and a glut of cheap oil have adversely impacted the corn ethanol industry. North Dakota State University CABLE Delegate, Elysia Taniguchi and her mentor, Dr. David Ripplinger discuss these challenges with Ron Lamberty, Senior Vice-President for the American Coalition for Ethanol. Learn about the many reasons why independent fuel stations use market ethanol in their gasoline products, various policy considerations to help grow the industry, and opportunities for export of this environmentally superior transportation fuel. This podcast is Elysia’s outreach project for the Consortium for Advanced Bioeconomy Leadership Education. Music is Beyond The Line from Bensound.com
