There's something about winter that makes us want to bundle up and get warm. And while many of us do this with sweaters, a beanie, and thick wool socks, there's another critical way we stay warm: Through the herbs and food we eat. In many herbal traditions, plants are often split into warming or cooling. A cooling herb might be great in summer, but it can leave you feeling off-balance during the cold winter months. That's why it's important to turn to warming herbs and spices that heat us up from the inside out. By doing this, we not only stay warmer, but we also come a little bit closer to living in harmony with nature's cycles. In today's episode, you'll learn: How living in harmony with the seasons connects us with nature Why using warming herbs keeps us balanced, vital, and healthy during winter The main actions, energetics, and affinities of warming herbs How to use simple warming spices you already have at home My favorite recipes for warming teas, herbal lattes, and even a few cocktails ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at: http://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: http://www.facebook.com/EvolutionaryHerbalism https://www.instagram.com/evolutionary_herbalism/ Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyP63opAmcpIAQg1M9ShNSQ Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism: https://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com/evolutionary-herbalism-book/ ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine. Traditionally, Echinacea was used for entirely different reasons. By rediscovering its original applications, we can break free from the idea that Echinacea is just a “cough, cold and flu” herb and appreciate the many ways it supports the body holistically. In today's episode, you'll learn: What makes Echinacea's flavor so unique and why it creates that signature tingling sensation The best time to use Echinacea when you're feeling sick How Echinacea can be used for venomous snake bites and stings Why Echinacea is considered the quintessential Mars plant in medical astrology Why its combination of cooling and pungent energetics is so rare ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at: http://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: http://www.facebook.com/EvolutionaryHerbalism https://www.instagram.com/evolutionary_herbalism/ Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyP63opAmcpIAQg1M9ShNSQ Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism: https://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com/evolutionary-herbalism-book/ ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine. If you walk into a hip smoothie shop or health food store, you'll undoubtedly be flooded with the newest “superfoods” and cure-all herbs. Like so many things in our modern culture, herbal medicine also has its own “fads,” as it seems as if there's almost a new one in style each season. Although it may seem harmless at first and they may be a good gateway into the realm of herbal medicine, herbal fads may not necessarily be a good thing. Most of the time, they're promoted by big supplement companies looking to inflate their bottom line, even if the truth is a bit fudged to get there (or even flat-out lies!). By learning about the danger of herbal fads, you can become a more conscious consumer and herbalist and know how to navigate this sometimes confusing territory. In today's blog post you'll learn: Who's behind herbal fads and how they're born in the market How herbal fads hurt the credibility of herbalism and pigeonhole herbs The ecological and cultural damage herbal fads can cause Ways companies lie about herbs and how they can hurt you Why herbal fads can change the way you think about herbs without even realizing it ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at: http://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: http://www.facebook.com/EvolutionaryHerbalism https://www.instagram.com/evolutionary_herbalism/ Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyP63opAmcpIAQg1M9ShNSQ Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism: https://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com/evolutionary-herbalism-book/ ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine. Cassie Hower is a Clinical Herbalist, Flower Essence Practitioner and Plant Medicine Maker with a deep passion for the natural world. She is an Earth Medicine Practitioner and is passionate about keeping the earth and plant world at the forefront of her mind when working with clients. Cassie believes we were born to live in alignment with nature and that connection to nature is foundational in living a vital, happy and healthy life. Alongside nature connection, she offers her clients food and dietary suggestions, lifestyle adjustments, individualised herbal medicine treatment and flower essence therapy along with a loving and supportive nature to help guide these changes to become a life long practice. Food and nutrition has been a big part of Cassie's plant medicine journey- after experiencing gut related health issues in her late teens and early twenties, she made many positive changes to her diet. These changes were heavily influenced by tuning in and listening to her body and what felt good. Cassie shares how a breast cancer diagnosis when her youngest child was just 4 months old, was the trigger for her increasing interest in plant medicine- seeking some balance after experiencing cancer treatment. During her herbal medicine studies, Cassie describes feeling quite disconnected from the herbs and shares that it wasn't until COVID lockdowns when she found herself spending lots of time in nature in the bushland surrounding her house that a deep connection with the plants began to form. For Cassie self care is all about increasing vitality and bringing in more pleasure and she shares how she's much better now at hearing the whispers from her body when this is necessary. Cassie shares how tapping into her feminine softness and the rhythms and cycles of her body helps to shape what self care looks like for her. She loves incorporating herbs into her daily routines using herbal infused oils and she shares some lovely recipes. Cassie also shares her passion for flower essences and how creating and using these special medicines deepens her connection to the plants. The world of medicinal plants is so vast, and the knowledge required to serve others from within the healthcare field so extensive, that it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the expectation that we memorize huge amounts of information to work as a Community or Clinical Herbalist! Today, I break down the functions of people and plants using an age-old system that has been adapted over the years to suit our language, and which simplifies our work in a meaningful way. It also counters the excessive “specialization” that has happened in modern healthcare, with a view of patterns that explains how numerous symptoms can reflect a single person's experience. We are diving deep in this episode, so bring your notebook and pen! This episode is included in either the Community Herbalism or Clinical Herbalism program, offered by Herba Remedium. Herba Remedium is an online, Christian herbalist school. These programs are currently in development, but you can currently enroll in The Family Herbalism Course, or get on the waitlist for one of these new offerings. In this episode, our host Gaby Azorsky speaks with Kristen Cassie. Kristen is a Trauma trained Somatic Practitioner and Clinical Herbalist. In her sessions, we re-member what it is like to be connected to our bodies, to the Earth and to the wisdom that flows through all. Though trauma-informed somatic healing, parts work and inner child work, herbal therapies, and embodiment practice, she can HOLD SPACE. Kristen is the founder of the herbal medicine line, Moon Canyon, with her dear friend and business partner, Sarah Dolan. Moon Canyon is rooted in the belief that all healing is relational and reciprocal in nature. Kristen and Sarah are herbalists, who have come together to remember what it is to heal in community. As practitioners in the healing arts, they tend the relationship between self and the natural world. Co-creatively they formulate herbal medicines and practice healing modalities that awaken the body and spirit into a place of aliveness. I love their products and the intentionally depth and beauty they create, especially their seasonal medicine boxes. While working with her and Moon Canyon last year, I got to witness her speak continuously about herbs, the earth, and somatic healing. Hearing Kristen speak on these topics is soothing, safe, and mesmerizing. Kristen and I talk about her story, somatic healing, herbalism, plant allies, integration, parts work, grounding, our nervous systems, and at the end, Kristen shares tactical tips for regulating our bodies along with a yummy grounding practice.
