Welcome to the Ignite Podcast. In today's episode Kaitlyn, Community Center Director, and Kennon, Community Center friend, discuss the topic of greed from a Biblical perspective. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, greed is: "A selfish & excessive desire for more of something than is needed." Kaitlyn shares about a YouTube video made by Sam Pepper that demonstrated how those with little are actually more generous than those that have more. Kennon shares of his experience being homeless & how he's seen greed in others that are unwilling to extend a helping hand to him. He shares, "I'm happier not having a lot of money. God gave me enough - He's more than enough." Verses mentioned include: Life is not measured by how much you own. -Luke 12:15 Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless. -Ecclesiastes 5:10 Whoever is greedy for unjust gain troubles his own household, but he who hates bribes will live. -Proverbs 15:27 Those who trust in their riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf. -Proverbs 11:28 Questions to consider: What's driving you to succeed? What's motivating you? ABC's of Salvation: The A is for admit you've done wrong The B is for believe that Jesus died for our sins And the C is for calling on His name by asking Jesus to come into your heart. Verses in today's episode include: Ezekiel 36:26 - I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. Romans 12:2 - Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Philippians 1:6 - Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Psalms 139:23-24 - Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Jeremiah 32:38-40 - They will be my people, and I will be their God. I will give them singleness of heart and action, so that they will always fear me and that all will then go well for them and for their children after them. I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good to them, and I will inspire them to fear me, so that they will never turn away from me. The two most powerful ways we can grow in our faith include reading the Bible and praying. Kennon talks on 5 additional ways to promote spiritual transformation in our lives: 1. Kaitlyn and Heather discuss the difference between talents and spiritual gifts. A spiritual gift is a special divine empowerment given to each believer by the Holy Spirit to accomplish a given type of ministry. Oftentimes our gifts don't come natural to us. That's why we must rely on God to help us with what He's called us to do. 1 Corinthians 12:4 tells us, "Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit." Everyone's gifting will look different, but we are united in the fact that we're putting our faith in Jesus. And 1 Corinthians 12:1 says, "Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy." Our motivation for using our spiritual gifts should come from a place of loving God and loving others. ABC's of Salvation: The A is for admit you've done wrong. What does it mean to share our testimony? It's a big word that can seem intimidating to many. But it simply means sharing with others about how God has been a part of our lives. Christianity.com provides a three-step outline that may be helpful in the process. 1. Sharing what your life was like before knowing God 2. How you knew you needed God and how that was acknowledged 3. How your life is now with following Jesus Acts 13:15 tells us, "If you have a message of encouragement for the people, please speak." While Kaitlyn expresses that speaking in this way doesn't come naturally, she's encouraged by this verse to share her own testimony with others so they may be inspired to make God a part of their life. Together, they discuss what overthinking has looked like in their lives and provide tips on how to combat the negative spiral of caring too much of what others think of us. Two quotes to go along with the topic include one from author and motivational speaker, Rachel Hollis: "Other people's opinion of you is none of your business." And the second is from Sylvia Plath that states: "My mother said the cure for thinking too much about yourself was helping somebody who was worse off than you." A great way to get out of our own head is by serving others. We also have the opportunity to change the story we tell ourselves. Every day is a new opportunity to be who God has called us to be. We can choose to let go of the past by reminding ourselves of 2 Corinthians 5:17 "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation." Whether it's family, co-workers, friends, roommates or neighbors, there'll be times when we don't get along or don't agree with another person's behavior or choices. What can we do about it though? What would Jesus call us to do is the better question. Here's the talking points to consider from today's episode: How can we want the best for someone, yet make sure we're not compromising our wellbeing or integrity in the process? What can we learn from the verses Mark 2:17 and 1 Corinthians 15:33 in relation to our own situation? God loves everyone, even the people we struggle to get along with. Kaitlyn and Heather discuss the topic of talent. A few questions they consider is where does talent come from? How do we even know what our talents are? And when we figure that out, how can we use them to the best of our ability? The inspiration for this episode comes from the quote: "When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left and could say, I used everything You gave me." That quote comes from actor, Chadwick Boseman who recently passed away at the age of 43. Jesus's teaching of, "The Parable of Talents" in Matthew 25: 14-30 illustrates how we should use the talents that God has given us rather than hide them from the world.
