Teacher: Dave Brown Despair: Utter loss of hope.— Merriam-Webster Dictionary Why is light given to those in misery, and life to the bitter of soul, to those who long for death that does not come, who search for it more than for hidden treasure, who are filled with gladness and rejoice when they reach the grave? Why is life given to a man whose way is hidden, whom God has hedged in? For sighing has become my daily food; my groans pour out like water. What I feared has come upon me; what I dreaded has happened to me. I have no peace, no quietness; I have no rest, but only turmoil.— Job 3:20-26 3 Types of Despair:1 - Spiritual Despair2 - Emotional Despair3 - Physical Despair Covert despair—repressed hopelessness characterizes the spiritual condition of North American culture. Unlike the despair of the poor and afflicted around the globe who know too well their true condition, the despair of the dominant culture of North America is a denied despair, not merely hidden by wealth and power but forcibly refused It is the kind of repressive posture that must lie to itself constantly that ends in destructive behavior more devastating than the negating realities it fears to acknowledge.— Kathleen O'Conner The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.—Luke 4:18-19 Without lament our hearts remain devoid of the light of Christ. Lament is an essential practice for moving to hope. Prayers that erupt from wounds, burst out of unbearable pain, and bring it to language. Laments complain, shout, and protest. They anger and despair before God and the community. They grieve. They argue. The find fault…Although laments appear disruptive of God's world, they are acts of fidelity. In vulnerability and honesty, they cling obstinately to God and demand for God to see, hear, and act.— Kathleen O'Conner Hope: To cherish a desire with anticipation.— Merriam-Webster Dictionary 3 Kinds of Christian Hope:1 - Spiritual Hope2 - Emotional Hope3 - Physical Hope To hope for a better future in this world—for the poor, the sick, the lonely and depressed, for the slaves, the refugees, the hungry and homeless, for the abused, the paranoid, the downtrodden and despairing, and in fact for the whole wide, wonderful, and wounded world— is not something else, something extra, something tacked on to the gospel as an afterthought.— N.T. Wright The whole point of what Jesus was up to was that he was rescuing people from the corruption and decay of the way the world presently is so they could enjoy, already in the present, that renewal of creation which is God's ultimate purpose—and so they could thus become colleagues and partners in that larger project.— N.T. Wright

In this week's episode of Political Contessa, Jennifer Nassour tackles the pressing issue of polarization in American politics. Jennifer discusses how the 2024 election cycle has highlighted the ever-growing divide within society and its impact on personal relationships. Reflecting on the Merriam-Webster Dictionary's choice for 2024's word of the year, "polarization," she delves into how this division between and within political parties has affected the national discourse. Jennifer passionately urges listeners to consider engaging with differing viewpoints for a healthier political environment. She draws attention to the need for civility and understanding, emphasizing that respect for diverse opinions can potentially bridge the gap caused by political rifts. She also touches upon the new administration and its focus on the economy, jobs, and inflation, encouraging politicians to concentrate on these unifying issues rather than engaging in divisive practices. Jennifer closes with a hopeful message for a less polarized society in 2025. "It's become something that we have lost friends over." - Jennifer Nassour Today on Political Contessa: · Polarization is the Merriam-Webster Dictionary's word for 2024. · There is immense polarization in the parties themselves and between the two parties. · Avoidance of political discussions has led to lost friendships. · The term "rhino" refers to Republicans in name only. · Respecting and understanding differing opinions is essential. · Engaging with media sources outside one's bubble can reduce polarization. · The focus should be on issues like the economy, jobs, and inflation. · A less polarized society is the hope for 2025. This episode begins with the word polarization being chosen as the dictionary word of the year and ironically being the one thing that both sides of the political spectrum agree upon. The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines polarization as “a division into sharply distinct opposites in which opinions and no longer range along a continuum, but become concentrated at opposing extremes.” When polarization becomes the key word, extreme levels of tension are being experienced, both on the collective level and in the psyche of each individual person. At critical times on Earth, the basic elements and energies of life polarize. We become crucified by seemingly irreconcilable aspects of a conflict that was under the surface all along. When that happens, simply choosing one side or the other in order to avoid the tension and the uncertainty simply causes the dilemma to reform in another area or at a different level. At that point, it becomes important to know that a tension of opposites is the precondition for creation and for any meaningful change. While the two poles of a polarity seem to be irreconcilable opposites, they are secretly one. For in a true polarity, like light and dark or up and down, one side cannot exist without the other. Like night and day, existence itself is an essential unity, appearing as an oppositional duality. Seen that way, meaningful change and true transformation are the secret aims of the tension inside life itself. While great uncertainty and fear can cause people to quickly choose one side of each dilemma, maturity, a word which can mean both “ripe and timely,” is related to our ability to withstand and understand the tension of the opposites. When we hold the tension of opposites long enough a surprising third way can appear that allows a truly creative solution that renews the energy of life itself. "According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the word vulnerable is derived from the Latin word vulnerare, meaning 'to wound.' The definition includes 'capable of being wounded' and 'open to attack or damage.' The interesting thing is that Adam and Eve were in a state of vulnerability since they took their first breath and they were fine with it, no anxiety or fear or desire to protect themselves. What changed?" Listen to the audio recording of "Confessions of a Maranatha Pastor: Part IV" by Matthew Cullen now.

When I'm working with artists, the most frequent question they ask is how they should structure their creative business. How do they know which tasks in their creative entrepreneurship life are worth their time? How should their business work if they want that business to support them and fulfill them in all the ways they need to be supported and fulfilled: personally, creatively, and financially? What does a functioning creative business look like? Today, let's discuss. In this episode, you will learn: What six components thriving creative businesses share in common. How to implement those six components within your creative business. Why establishing supportive habits will free you to do your best creative work. What role the financial aspects of your business play in helping your creative business thrive overall. How these six components can help you maintain a steady income in your business, getting you off the “feast or famine” roller coaster. In this episode, I reference the Merriam-Webster Dictionary definitions of systematized, marketing, and networking. I also reference this Vanity Fair article, in which US President Barak Obama talks about what he does to reduce his decision fatigue. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a curio is "something considered novel, rare, or bizarre." A memento is "something that serves to warn or remind." Today's light hearted episode encourages you to look around; go on a treasure hunt and search for curios, mementos, and everyday Ebenezers. Don't know what an Ebenezer is? We're glad you asked. W.O.K.E.- "WILLINGLY OVERLOOKING KNOWN EVIL" What does 'woke' mean and why are some conservatives using it? The definition of "woke" changes depending on who you ask. The term has recently been used by some conservatives as an insult against progressive values. The term, however, was originally coined by progressive Black Americans and used in racial justice movements in the early to mid-1900s. To be "woke" politically in the Black community means that someone is informed, educated and conscious of social injustice and racial inequality, Merriam-Webster Dictionary states. One of its earliest uses was in a historical recording of the protest song "Scottsboro Boys" by Lead Belly. In that recording, it was used as a term about staying aware of the potential for racist violence as a Black person in America.

A while back I learned an important lesson - If you're horrible at singing, don't go caroling. Back when I produced the Scott & Al show (Scott Hastings - Alfred Williams), the first character I ever did on-air was a Christmas one. There's a lot of weird ways people get hurt around Christmas. Especially in Germany. Merriam-Webster Dictionary broke down the names of Santa's reindeer, and it's extremely odd. Would you go dumpster diving for Christmas dinner? Someone has been doing it for the past three years, and it kind of makes sense. The most popular, and some of the most bizarre food orders from Uber-eats in 2023. Oh, and Santa ruined Christmas. I explain.
In the beloved movie The Princess Bride the character Vizzini frequently cries, “inconceivable!” about things that keep happening. Finally, another character observes, “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.” That scene comes to mind annually, when Merriam-Webster Dictionary announces its “word of the year.” The announcement is intended to recognize words that have defined our cultural moment. In recent years, it has recognized words our cultural moment has redefined. For example, last year's word “gaslighting” describes unhealthy behavior in which someone tries to manipulate you into questioning your sanity. However, like the word “toxic” before it, “gaslighting” is now a catch-all term used by some to shut down pretty much anyone who disagrees with them. “They” was the 2019 word of the year, which, in ordinary English, is a third-person plural pronoun. In today's Newspeak, it's a mandatory way of referring to someone who claims to be “nonbinary,” also a redefined word. This year's word is “authentic,” which the dictionary defines as “not false or imitation: real, actual,” or “worthy of acceptance or belief as conforming to or based on fact.” However, the context in which this word is most frequently and passionately used is the debate over gender identity, as in “be your authentic self.” So, it now refers to anything but reality or conformity to fact. To be “authentic” in 2023 often means stubbornly ignoring fact, hormonally masking or surgically reconstructing fact, and demanding that others also ignore fact, even in classrooms, competitions, locker rooms, and in print. In short, “authenticity” now means conformity with subjective internal feelings that are widely assumed to be the defining feature of individuals and the highest value in society. Theologian Carl Trueman documented how we got to this place—how the self became psychologized, how psychology became sexualized, and how sex became politicized—in his book The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self. This new definition of “authenticity” is part of that story—that living a fulfilling life consists primarily in looking within, discovering who you “truly are,” and then projecting that identity into the world. These are all central to his account. Trueman explains: "Expressive individualism particularly refers to the idea that in order to be fulfilled, in order to be an authentic person, in order to be genuinely me, I need to be able to express outwardly or perform publicly that which I feel I am inside. … In a society where the expressive individual is increasingly the norm and increasingly presented as that which we should all be, then the idea of society itself forcing us to play a role that we don't feel comfortable with inside makes us inauthentic." This new definition of “authentic,” that what I feel inside is the highest truth, would have baffled people in centuries past and still baffles many non-Westerners today. However, the real problem is that this new definition of “authentic” is utter nonsense. Truth is not primarily subjective but objective. Reality is not decided by individuals but given by a Creator. One of the things our Creator both demands of us and enables us to do through redemption is conform our inner selves to His will and design, which He reveals, objectively, in both creation and Scripture. To be authentically me is to be who God says I am. Our identity is established by, guaranteed by, and secured in Jesus Christ. Even more important than getting words right is pointing to the reality to which words refer and are permanently tethered. Words become nonsense otherwise, and that should make this practice of redefining words truly “inconceivable.” Before I sign off today, I wanted to say thank you for making Breakpoint a part of Christian worldview diet. Do you feel pressured to convey a certain image because of what others expect of you? Are you afraid to disappoint others, so you hide your honest opinions and thoughts so that you can be accepted? Are you angry because you feel pushed around by others, but you haven't been honest with others or even with God about it? You're not alone. You're in a huge club called “The People Pleasers.” What is a people pleaser? According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, it's "a person who has an emotional need to please others often at the expense of his or her own needs or desires." We can't get over our issues with people pleasing when we don't understand why we're doing what we're doing. This is not a light matter, and while I can only scratch the surface in this brief episode, I encourage you to ask God to search your heart to uncover deeper things that may be going on. We have reasons for doing whatever we do, and when it comes to people pleasing, guilt, shame, fear, and a lack of trust in God are on the list. At the end of this episode, take some time to pray and ask the Lord to show you what's going on in your heart and let Him help you. God's way is perfect. Ours is flawed. Let's consider four signs that you may be a people pleaser, followed by suggestions on what to do about it. Whether you are aware of it or not, the world is filled with social constructs about you, your life and your retirement. In this podcast, Ben Taatjes is going to cover three distinct social constructs that, if followed, will steer you off-course from truly walking into God's fullness for your life.

This is Dr. MaryAnn Diorio, novelist and life coach, welcoming you to another episode of Winning with the Word. Today is Monday, August 7, 2023, and this is Episode #31 of Series 2023. This episode is titled "Why You Need to Be Born Again." One of Satan's tactics to thwart God's plan and a person's destiny is to cast aspersions on Biblical principles and terms. Chief among these, in my opinion, is the term "born again." For various reasons, and sad to say, the term "born again" has acquired a negative connotation for many people. So in this week's message, I would like to set the record straight and explain exactly what "born again" means and why you need to be born again. The term "born again" originates with Jesus Christ Himself. He was the first to "coin" the expression, so to speak, in the Gospel of John, chapter 3, verse 3 where He said this: “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (NKJV). Let's look at these words of Christ one by one in order to grasp their meaning. First, Jesus used the words most assuredly. Why did He use these specific words? The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines assuredly as meaning certainly or without a doubt [whatsoever][Brackets mine]. Most assuredly, then, means most certainly. So Jesus is saying here that most certainly you need to be born again. In other words, there is absolutely no doubt that you need to be born again. So, the next question becomes, what does it mean to be born again? Simply put, to be born again means to be reconnected to God by receiving a new nature, a nature compatible with God's holy nature. When we are born physically into this world, we are born with a sin nature, a nature that has been corrupted by sin. Some people call this "original sin" because we received this sin nature by default from our original parents, Adam and Eve. When they rebelled against God, Papa Adam and Mama Eve lost their holy nature and got a sin nature instead. This sin nature, therefore, was the only nature they could pass on to their descendants. And that's exactly what they did. All the way down to you and me. Since a sin nature is not compatible with God's holy nature, there can be no spiritual connection between God and us. And since we were created to have a spiritual connection with God, we soon discover, to our great dismay, that we face a huge dilemma. We have a sin nature but we need a holy nature. But we can't acquire a holy nature on our own. We need help. We need a Savior. Someone who can take away our sin nature and give us a holy nature in its place. So the next question becomes, why do we need a holy nature? That is, why do we need to be born again? Jesus gives us the reason in the second part of the verse. He explains that we need to be born again in order to see the Kingdom of God. Jesus lives in the Kingdom of God. So, if we want to see Jesus and to reconnect with Him, we need to be born again. We need a holy nature. Okay, but what is this Kingdom of God that Jesus wants us to see? The Kingdom of God is where Jesus lives. We normally call it Heaven. It is the place of eternal life, the place where people who are born again go when they die, and where they live forever and ever and ever. Moreover, the Kingdom of God is the home for which we were originally created.

(Piano music stops) Welcome to Ten Things I Like About… I'm Kiersten, your host, and this is a podcast about misunderstood or unknown creatures in nature. Some we'll find right out side our doors and some are continents away but all are fascinating. This podcast will focus ten, ten minute episodes on different animals and their amazing characteristics. Please join me on this extraordinary journey, you won't regret it. This episode continues the coelacanth and their crazy interesting fins is the eighth thing I like about this deep sea fish. Today I have a guest cohost joining me, my friend Casey. Thanks for joining me Casey. Casey: You're welcome. Thanks for having me. Kiersten: Casey and I have known each other for a long time. We met as zookeepers 18 years ago and became friends very quickly. Today, Casey is a biology teacher and when she found out I was doing this podcast she was excited to help me. Casey: Coelacanths are extremely interesting and their appendages, or limbs, are interesting in their history. Kiersten: Great! Today we're talking about limbs versus fins! I hope by now, listeners, you've all googled a picture of the coelacanth and have gotten a glimpse of their interesting fins. In episode two, anatomy, I talked about the coelacanths special fins called lobed fins. They have six lobed fins. Casey: I love their little limbs! Kiersten: Me too! But I thought they were fins? Casey: They do look like limbs. Kiersten: I think we need to dive into this topic and learn a bit more. Casey: I agree! Kiersten: Let's start with some definitions. The Oxford Languages Dictionary says a limb is "a leg or arm of a person or a four-legged animal, or a bird's wing”. That completely leaves out the coelacanth, for sure! Casey: I agree! But the Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition is “one of the projecting paired appendages of an animal body used especially for movement and grasping but sometimes modified into sensory or sexual organs.” I think that puts the coelacanth back in the limb arena! Kiersten: Maybe…Let's hear Oxford Languages Dictionary's definition of fin: “a flattened appendage on various parts of the body of many aquatic vertebrates and some invertebrates, including fish and cetaceans, used for propelling, steering, and balancing.” That definitely sounds like the coelacanth. Casey: I can't argue with that! But Merriam-Webster's definition of fin is “an external membranous process of an aquatic animal used in propelling or guiding the body.” I'm on the fence with this one. I wouldn't say that coelacanths have membranous fins. Kiersten: Hmmmmm….I think what we need to do is look at what these fins can do. Casey: You mean limbs. Kiersten: Let's call them appendages until we get his settled. Casey: Deal! Kiersten: The coelacanth has seven appendages overall. Four are paired, two behind the gills, the pectoral fins, one on each side; two mid body on the bottom of the fish the pelvic fins, one on each side. Then there is one anal fin just in front of the tail on the underside of the fish and then two dorsal fins. They have eight if you include the tail. I think it's interesting in itself that they have eight appendages, that's quite a lot for a fish. Casey: Yeah, what are they using all those appendages for? Kiersten: Well the four paired fins on each side of the body move like paddles propelling them forward through the water. These appendages are able to rotate 180 degrees so they can probably use them to back up as well as more forward. The really cool thing about these four extremities is that they work in conjunction with each other. The right pectoral fin moves together with the left pelvic fin. Casey: You mean like the way a horse walks? Kiersten: Yes! It's a lot like how a many land mammals move their ….. oh, I see where you going with this. You just want me to say they're limbs! Casey: Yes! Yes, I do! Kiersten: Well, I think we might both get what we want from the next definition. Coelacanths are classified as a lobe-finned fish. This means that the flouncy part of the fins are attached to a stalk that projects out from their body. It actually looks like a paddle with a fin attached to the end. Casey: That sounds like a limb…..and a fin. Kiersten: Yes, I agree. Maybe we can agree that we're both right? Casey: I can do that. Did you know that some lungfish, who are also a lobe-finned fish, actually use their fins to walk on land when they need too? If the vernal pond they are living in becomes too shallow, they can use their limbs to drag themselves across the land to another water source. Essentially they use their limbs to walk to another pond. Kiersten: I guess it really is both a limb and a fin. Speaking of limbs, I just read a research paper, from way back in the early 2000's, that stated a coelacanth fossil actually helped scientists understand the evolution from fins to limbs in tetrapods. Tell us little about that. Casey: I can! What you're talking about is called evolutionary classification which is a strategy that we tend to use now instead of taxonomy which only looks at physical attributes. Evolutionary classification is grouping organisms together based on their evolutionary history. So, we're looking at lines of evolutionary descent not just physical characteristics. These lines are called cladograms and they look like trees. They branch off at each different change. So, the cladogram where it's branching off to tetrapods, which is a four limbed vertebrate, is where their is a bit of a controversy involving the coelacanth. We are tetrapods. We may walk on two legs but we have four limbs. The big debate is whether the kingfish or the coelacanth is the direct ancestor of tetrapods. Now remember we said lungfish walk on their limbs to get to the next vernal pond. That is where the debate is coming from. I'd like to say there is an answer to this debate but there are three different cladograms and only one of them has the coelacanth as the direct ancestor to the tetrapod. Kiersten: Is it descendent or ancestor? Casey: It's ancestor. Kiersten: Okay. Because we're all tetrapods, right? Casey: Right, but we would be a descendant of a coelacanth. Now I'm not talking like you grandmother or anything. Kiersten: (laughs) Casey: I'm talking millions of years ago. So coelacanths or lungfish would be the ancestors of tetrapods. One version has the coelacanth as the direct ancestor, while another version has the lungfish as the direct ancestor, and the last version has both of them at the same branching. So, no solution to this debate as of yet. They've narrowed it down to these three options. No mater how you look at it though the coelacanth is Number 1 or Number 2. Kiersten: So, he's still winning. (Laughs) Casey: (laughs) Yes! He's still winning. He still in the trifecta. Either way it's still in the positive. Kiersten: That is interesting! That's why I picked you for this podcast! I knew you'd understand that and be able to explain it better than me! Thanks for helping me talk about the coelacanth appendages today Casey. Casey: You're welcome. I had a lot of fun! Kiersten: Me too! And I think we both agree that coelacanth appendages are both limbs and fins. Casey: I agree! Kiersten: Well that is it for this episode, listeners. I hope you enjoyed a little debate about coelacanth appendages because it's my eighth favorite thing about them. If you're enjoying this podcast please recommend me to friends and family and take a moment to give me a rating on whatever platform your listening. It will help me reach more listeners and give the animals I talk about an even better chance at change. Join me next week for another episode about the coelacanth. “Voluntary childlessness, also called being childfree, describes the voluntary choice not to have children. In most societies and for most of human history, choosing not to have children was both difficult and undesirable (except for celibate individuals). The availability of reliable contraception along with support provided in old age by one's government or by one's savings rather than one's family has made childlessness an option for some people, though they may be looked down upon in certain communities. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the word childfree first appeared sometime before 1901.[1] It entered common usage among feminists during the 1970s,[2] and was described as a 'trend' in 2014 in Psychology Today online magazine.[3] The suffix -free denotes the freedom and personal choice of those to pick this lifestyle. The meaning of the term childfree extends to encompass the children of others (in addition to one's own children) and this distinguishes it further from the more usual term "childless", which is traditionally used to express the idea of having no children, whether by choice or by circumstance.[4] The term child-free has been cited in Australian literature to refer to parents who are without children at the current time. This may be due to them living elsewhere on a permanent basis or a short-term solution such as childcare.[5]” --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

Welcome to my first solo episode! Let's talk about fear.I felt very much led to share some of my recent experiences around surrender and trust in the journey- as the last 3 years has involved me facing and sitting in the unknown and my fears. A definition of fear I found online: an unpleasant, often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger (Merriam Webster Dictionary). My mentor and coach, EnMay Mangels, often says: "There are only two fears we are born with. The fear of falling and the fear of loud noises- all other fears are LEARNED!" Once I heard this I really started to look at two things:1. What were my fears? I took the time to write them out.2. How was I CHOOSING to let them run my life? Yes- it's a choice when you allow yourself to make decisions based on a fear. This was a game changer for me. It has not been an easy road of unlearning these fears- AND it's been the most rewarding time of my 41 years of life. This has also been a very real lesson in DEEP trust and faith.I had enough money to last me for just over 1 month when I left my job.Zero savings, a maxed out credit card plus a maxed out personal line of credit.I needed to make $5,000 to pay my bills and another $600-$800 for food, gas, etc.I have had my company since August 2020 (31 months now) and there have only been maybe 5 months where I knew a month in advance that I had the money I needed to pay my bills next month. The other 26 months I often haven't known until the day before or 10 days into the month. I'm going to share 1 experience for each year since starting my company- in hopes that it gives you a surge of inspiration to take a risk and play big in some fashion with your life. We do so many things in life because we want to have this cushion. This feeling of security- its a false security. If you want real and true security- experience the unseen. The energy that is supporting us all. It means you stop listening to all the outside voices- and start listening to your inner voice. I have never felt more supported nor have I had such a deep level of faith, trust and inner peace.Enjoy :) And please reach out with any stories you have around your own journeys of trust and surrender!Follow I love it when
The Merriam Webster Dictionary says, "The English language has many fine words for “coward”... However, fine though they may be, none of these words have the evocative power that comes from compounding quake and buttock." Like many of us, particularly women, I am a quakebuttock when it comes to prolonged confrontation. But there are quite a lot of things that are great about getting older and one of them is you're quite clear about your boundaries... And you're much less worried about upsetting people when they overstep those boundaries In today's episode, we discuss how to face your fears and head into confrontations without allowing fear to stop you from achieving success. What are the components that make up a thriving creative business? If you listen to business coaches who are working and teaching in the non-creative business spaces, you'll frequently hear discussions about the components of a successful business, things like providing value to customers, hiring great employees, understanding the market, employing sound financial management, et cetera et cetera. And those business coaches are correct. For a traditional business, those things are incredibly important. But what about a creative business? Do the components needed for flourishing change at all when the business in question is an artistic business, one in which the product being sold by the business is the creative work of the artist running that business? What components do creative businesses need to grow and thrive? That's the question we're going to answer today. Merriam-Webster Dictionary chose the term "Gaslighting" as its 2022 word of the year as it was searched on their website 1,740% more in 2022 than in the previous year. "In this age of misinformation—of 'fake news,' conspiracy theories, Twitter trolls, and deepfakes—gaslighting has emerged as a word for our time." Today on How I See It, we discuss this term—how it's come to be used and abused in our culture, how we can recognize its effects in our own lives, and work to eliminate its telltale signs from our conversations.

Today we will be digging into the Big Question "Why Do Evil and Suffering Exist?" Resources: Epicurean Paradox Metanarrative of Scripture Point 1: How do we define evil and suffering? The Merriam-Webster Dictionary lists several definitions: “the fact of suffering, misfortune, and wrongdoing… a cosmic evil force… something that brings sorrow, distress, or calamity… morally reprehensible : SINFUL, WICKED… arising from actual or imputed bad character or conduct.” “Pain” … In summary: Evil is bad; evil is the opposite of good, and pain/suffering is the result of evil. Point 2: Why should anyone care about evil and suffering? Ultimately, evil and suffering are a reality of human life on earth. We all must decide how we will respond to this reality. In the end, how we respond to evil and suffering will determine our lives... We will either become the victim of evil & suffering, or we fight to overcome evil and grow through suffering. Point 3: We can observe evil and suffering in the human experience: 1) Humans are designed to feel pain. “congenital analgesia is an extraordinarily rare conditions in which a person cannot feel (and has never felt) physical pain... Because feeling physical pain is vital for survival, [this disorder] is extremely dangerous. It is common for people with the condition to die in childhood due to injuries or illnesses going unnoticed. Burn injuries are among the more common injuries.” 2) Life begins with suffering, childbirth, and ends with suffering, death. Most have all lost loved ones and seen them suffer. 3) Turn on the news for 5 minutes… We see pandemics, shootings, theft, natural disasters. What is our natural response to these tragedies? Point 4: How do we separate good and evil? As defined earlier, evil and suffering are “not good”… so the definition of evil depends on our definition of good. So this drives us to ask the question “What is the definition of good which is our basis to judge evil and suffering?” Epicurean Paradox, linked in show notes: Life is basically pointless suffering unless God is 1) All-powerful 2) All-knowing 3) All-good/loving. If not, then God cannot prevent evil, doesn't know about evil, and/or perpetuates evil. If this is our view of God, we are simply helpless victims of evil. But an all-powerful, all-knowing, all-good God can and would have a master plan to destroy evil which we can hope and trust in despite evil and suffering. As we move towards the bottom of the logic flowchart: “Could God have created a universe with free will but without evil?” If yes, then why didn't he? My personal answer: If God created everything, God created relationship. Can a genuine, free relationship exist without a genuine, free choice to deny that relationship? My logical answer to this question: God chose to allow evil to exist temporarily in order to give people the opportunity to seek relationship with Him by free choice, BUT has always had a plan to destroy evil. Therefore, God is good even though evil exists. Point 5: What does the Bible have to say about this question? Metanarrative of Scripture is Creation, Fall, Redemption, Restoration. The greater story that ties the entire Bible together as God's greater story. Creation: In Genesis 1-2, we read about creation being “good… good… good… then very good (mankind)… then the first thing that's not good (isolation)… Adam and Eve exist in a state of blissful ignorance and perfect relationship with God in Garden of Eden… Fall: BUT, in Genesis 3 we read of evil's existence in the garden… Serpent tempts and Adam and Eve break God's command… Response is denial of responsibility, blaming, excuses… Eternal life and newfound human capacity for evil cannot coexist, so God places limits on Adam and Eve via physical death… Eve cursed with painful childbearing… Adam cursed with endless toil… Both expelled from Garden of Eden and humanity begins to devolve quickly into broken relationships via polygamy and murder, suffering via natural disasters and disease, and spirital death via evil hearts. Redemption: From Genesis 3 to Jesus' 1st coming, we see that God had always intended to redeem humanity (Genesis 3:15: [Eve's offspring] he will crush [evil's] head, and you will strike his heel.” as prophesied throughout the Old Testament) and fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ's life, death, and resurrection. Restoration: Jesus' 1st coming – Jesus' 2nd coming. Promised in Revelation for those who trust in God: New heaven and earth free of sin, evil and suffering. Point 6: How can we practically apply what we've learned about evil and suffering to everyday life? When we are confronted with evil and suffering of the world, we can play the victim and blame others, or fight against evil… But how do we fight against evil without reciprocating evil? Answer: Christ's perfect life, death, and resurrection allows us by faith to break the cycle of sin through grace. We are no longer slaves to responding to sin with more sin, but can now respond with resolute forgiveness and grace by the blood of Christ and his finished work on the cross. When evil comes from within us and causes suffering, we can play the victim and blame others, or repent, seek God's forgiveness, and fight against evil. We must repent of sin and seek forgiveness for sin by the blood of Christ, so that we will not be slaves to our sin nature but be conformed into the image of Christ. We must respond with faith and hope in God's grand plan (metanarrative of scripture) to destroy evil and suffering and restore all things. What is our definition of good upon which we determine evil? In Mark 10:18, Jesus says “God alone is good.” We must seek to know God if we desire to know what is good. Matthew 7:7 says “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” We seek God, the source of all good through Prayer, reading our Bible, seeking wise Christian counsel, observing God's creation. The more we seek the goodness of God, the more empowered we are to overcome evil and suffering. REFLECT: What does this episode reveal about God's character? Could spending times in complete silence, i.e. not speaking to anyone for 30 minutes or an hour or so, help us to learn how to speak better? Meaning to have greater understanding on when to speak out and when to be silent when amongst others. Silence & Solitude are often listed together probably because it's difficult to do one without doing the other. Merriam Webster Dictionary defines the two as follows. Silence = the forbearance of speech or noise; synonym = muteness. Solitude = the quality or state of being alone or remote from society; synonym = seclusion. With that definition in mind in the book of Ecclesiastes 3:7b – it said that there is “a time to be silent and a time to speak”. Have you ever found yourself speaking out about things that you wish you could take back? There is a law or principle of Silence that allows individuals or creatures the space, peace, and time to rest and recuperate from the noises and chattering outside. The silence is found within the SOUL. Come join me and listen in on this week's episode as I share with you what the law or principle of Silence is and how you can apply the law to your life to change your life from the inside out. ***Correction on me saying once during the episode that it's the year 2020, but indeed the year 2022 during this recording. ***
