Papa Johns is taking to the skies. Pizza Hut is being sued by a franchisee over AI. And El Pollo Loco's turnaround effort is showing results.
Texas Roadhouse has been quietly adding more tech. FAT Brands franchisees are making their own claims in the ongoing bankruptcy case. And El Pollo Loco's momentum accelerated in the first quarter.
On this week's Extra Serving, NRN editor in chief Sam Oches and executive editor Alicia Kelso discuss the latest restaurant industry news, including Inspire Brands' plans to go public plus earnings results from 18 currently public restaurant companies. First up is the news that Inspire had filed documents with the SEC to go public — a move that Sam and Alicia have anticipated for a few years, yet nevertheless feels huge for a restaurant industry that has been fairly dormant as far as IPOs are concerned. The editors discuss what this means for Inspire and whether it could nudge other companies to jump into the public markets. Then they take a dive into the crazy spate of restaurant earnings, of which there were 18 over the course of the week. They start with the burger category, where McDonald's, Burger King, and Shake Shack reported positive results, while Wendy's continued a run of negative sales. How are McDonald's and Burger King leveraging operations and marketing to build momentum, while Wendy's keeps taking the hits? Sam and Alicia break it down. Next they move into the full-service sector, where it's mostly good news, as Texas Roadhouse, BJ's, and First Watch continue to thrive while Applebee's and Bloomin' Brands are showing signs of life. Why does casual dinging in particular seem to be succeeding in the midst of this economy? Sam and Alicia discuss. They then dig into other brands that reported this week, including Noodles & Co. and El Pollo Loco — both of which wowed with their results — plus Sweetgreen, which posted a staggering -12.8% sales drop the same week it introduced wraps to the menu. Finally, we share an interview between managing editor Leigh Anne Zinsmeister and Jeff's Bagel Run cofounders Jeff and Danielle Perera, recorded live at Restaurant Leadership Conference. For more on these stories: Dunkin' owner Inspire Brands files documents for an IPOBurger King's sales surge while Popeyes strugglesTexas Roadhouse sprints to best same-store sales since '24

It's a good time to be a chicken chain. New concepts are taking off and legacy brands, like the 50-year-old El Pollo Loco, are poised for serious growth. The fire-grilled chicken brand, currently open in eight states, is planning a larger expansion. In this episode, Jill Adams, the brand's chief marketer, talks customer expectations, AI for better and more efficient marketing efforts, and why she's optimistic restaurants will have a good 2026.
How is El Pollo Loco giving customers value without giving up profits? This week's episode of the Restaurant Business podcast A Deeper Dive features Liz Williams, CEO of the fast-food chicken chain. El Pollo Loco just reported a decline in same-store sales with an increase in traffic and restaurant-level profits. Generally speaking when customers pay less per order it's hard to generate profit growth. Williams explains how the company did this. But we talk about a lot of other things, including the company's development strategy—it just opened its 500th restaurant—and the difficulty of operating in California, especially these days.We also talk about the chain's plan for beverages and why that's a huge opportunity. And the company is testing a couple of intriguing chicken products. This is a great conversation with Liz Williams so please check it out.
Popeyes is working through a slump. El Pollo Loco is improving profitability, and New York's Waldorf Astoria is back and better than ever.

What if Anthony Michael Hall wasn't the face of 1980s teen angst? What if instead of starring in The Breakfast Club, he was flipping omelets at a diner or selling insurance in suburban Chicago? This week on Celebrity Jobber with Jeff Zito, we dive into the alternate reality of one of the most recognizable faces from John Hughes’ iconic coming-of-age films. Anthony Michael Hall — the original “geek” who made awkward cool — joins Jeff to talk about what could have been if Hollywood hadn’t come calling. Hall shot to fame with a string of unforgettable roles in Sixteen Candles, Weird Science, and The Breakfast Club, becoming the go-to actor for every lovable outsider in 80s cinema. But he wasn’t just a teen dream. He broke molds again by becoming the youngest cast member ever on Saturday Night Live at just 17 years old — a bold move that showed his comedic range and fearless ambition. Over the years, Hall has shed the high school persona and proven his versatility in serious roles — from the gritty The Dead Zone to portraying Whitey Ford in 61 and even embodying a cold-hearted villain in The Dark Knight. But despite the evolution, one question remains: What job would Anthony Michael Hall be doing today if he never got that lucky break? Many stars have walked a thin line between fame and flipping burgers. Remember Kanye West’s stint at The Gap? Or Brad Pitt sweating it out in a chicken suit for El Pollo Loco? Hall might’ve ended up a music producer, a writer, or even a motivational speaker — but one thing’s for sure: he never saw himself as just a jobber.
Steak n Shake's owner has his eyes on a chicken chain. Dave & Buster's is airing some recent mistakes. And Smalls Sliders has a new CEO.

She discusses the art of brand reinvention, sharing how El Pollo Loco is modernizing its look, embracing technology, and staying true to its bold, citrus-marinated flavors. Liz unpacks the growing consumer demand for fresh, high-quality fast food, the power of digital engagement and customer loyalty, and the delicate balance between innovation and preserving what makes a brand iconic.Key Takeaways:Liz shares how El Pollo Loco is modernizing its restaurants, with half of its locations undergoing a redesign to enhance customer experience and brand consistency. The sauce matters! Sam and Alicia discuss the rarefied air that Taco Bell occupies, where it's built a cult-like following among younger consumers and can continue to leverage new menu items to build incredible momentum. They also talk about four companies that reported sales results this week: three that turned in a positive performance (Cracker Barrel, Potbelly, El Pollo Loco) and one that did not (Dine Brands). And they tackle Alicia's recent story on all of the chains that are cutting SKUs from their kitchens, including Starbucks, Papa Johns, and Einstein Bros. Valentine's Day is fast approaching and many restaurants are offering the usual romantic dinners for two. But this year, even coffee cafes and smoothie bowl concepts are spreading the love with specials themed to the holiday. Pat and Bret chat about the trend, and how restaurants are not just targeting couples anymore. An OpenTable survey found that groups and singles are increasingly dining out on or before Valentine's Day. So candy-topped milkshakes, strawberry lattes and heart-shaped doughnuts make perfect sense. Valentine's Day and Super Bowl vie for attention every February, with heart-shaped pizzas and chicken wings competing on menus. Speaking of wings, Bret came across a couple of new sauces recently. El Pollo Loco introduced its first new flavor in almost a decade—mango habanero. The sauce taps into the sweet-heat trend that we've been seeing a lot of lately. And WNBA star Angel Reese partnered with McDonald's on a new smoky barbecue sauce. It's flavoring a quarter-pounder rather than chicken, and this is the first time the burger giant is collaborating with a female athlete. Our guest this week is Chris Smith, CEO of Zunzi's and Zunzibar based in Savannah, Georgia. Zunzi's started as a hole-in-the-wall sandwich shop and now has multiple locations in Georgia and South Carolina and is expanding to Florida. Zunzibar has a topnotch mixology program but manages to project a relaxed, tropical vibe—a formula that has proven to be a winning combination. Listen as Smith talks about how he's built a team culture that's as unique as these two concepts.

Andy began his career in the Accelerated Marketing Development Program at Ford Motor Company. He holds a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management.

This week on the Extra Serving podcast, a product of Nation's Restaurant News, NRN editors Holly Petre, Sam Oches, and Leigh Anne Zinsmeister continued to speak about this quarter's earnings.Since the editors last gathered for the pod, several companies have reported, including Bloomin' Brands, El Pollo Loco, and Texas Roadhouse. The editors mentioned Texas Roadhouse last week, anticipating the brand's positive returns, and that's exactly what was reported. The chain saw 4% traffic growth, slightly less than at Chipotle, and same-store sales growth of almost 8% across the system.Much like KFC, Wendy's is looking to its international market for help during this rough financial time.Meanwhile, Shake Shack and El Pollo Loco are investing heavily in kiosks and seeing returns. And much like the editors talked about last week, speed of service is key for many brands, and that includes family-dining chains. First Watch is now investing in technology to speed up service time for customers. This week, there are three interviews from the Restaurant Leadership Conference, with executives from Dave's Hot Chicken, Newk's Eatery, and Union Square Hospitality Group.

When you think about the evolution of the fast-casual restaurant industry, digital innovation might not be the first thing that comes to mind. But for those of us tuned into the latest episode of Fast Casual Nation, digital marketing's role in revolutionizing the customer experience became crystal clear. We had the pleasure of sitting down with Gabe Alonso, Vice President of Digital Marketing at El Pollo Loco. Gabe's 15+ years of experience across music, entertainment, apparel, and food and beverage gives him a unique perspective. Having led digital strategies for giants like PepsiCo, Activision, and Nike, Gabe's dynamic career journey has now brought him to El Pollo Loco. The allure of the food sector for Gabe? A chance to intimately connect with the Hispanic culture. Though El Pollo Loco finds its roots in Mexican heritage and Gabe is of Cuban descent, the essence of food and familial bonds remains a shared thread. Gabe keenly observes the rising influence of Latino culture in mainstream media, echoing the successes of artists like Bad Bunny and Karol G. His ambition: position El Pollo Loco to ride this cultural wave. But the episode didn't stop there. A major focal point was the transformation of El Pollo Loco's loyalty program. Gabe unveiled a shift from a simple point-based system to a tiered, gamified structure. Every dollar spent earns the customer 100 points, with the flexibility to redeem rewards across varying tiers. The introduction of multipliers as you climb the ranks? Simply genius. It's an engaging method to keep customers coming back, making them feel a part of the El Pollo Loco "Familia."One intriguing takeaway was Gabe's approach to influencer partnerships. It isn't just about roping in food bloggers. El Pollo Loco's collaborations span artists, dancers, and family influencers, ensuring the brand's core values of flavor, family, culture, and craft resonate across a wider audience.Drawing from his time at Nike, Gabe stressed the necessity of centering the consumer in marketing strategies. The future, as he sees it, is in tech-driven restaurants with a strong emphasis on labor efficiencies. With machine learning to predict customer preferences and AI tailoring offers, El Pollo Loco is well on its path to shaping the future of fast-casual dining. In essence, if you're in the restaurant and foodservice industry don't miss this episode, filled with a treasure trove of insights. We've seen the future of fast-casual dining, and with forward-thinkers like Gabe Alonso at the helm, the future of fast-casual dining promises to be vibrant, tech-savvy, and innovative. This week we are honored to have Alex Estrada who owns and operates Pale Moon Ranch studio with us at The Musicians Guild. Alex is an engineer, producer and musician. He has made recordings for bands such as Joyce Manor, Touché Amoré, NAILS, and Xibalba among many others. Alex is also a legit vegan cook and walks the talk as he is a strong reference point for great plant based recipes and meals. Alex approaches his musical work and living style with a thoughtfulness and intent that I find carries an energy in a strong and great way; both seriously and with a sense of humor. We talk about Alex growing up with his father being a well known mariachi leading Mariachi Sol De Mexico, how bands can rehearse better, helping music scenes thrive on both a large and small scale, his vegan version of El Pollo Loco, tending to a rural property, excessive mix revisions from bands, preferred approaches to making records and lots more.
