In this episode of Shark Theory, host Baylor Barbee reflects on the importance of making resolutions actionable and sustainable, drawing lessons from his recent encounter at the gym. As the new year begins, gyms are often filled with enthusiastic "resolutioners," eager to make changes. Baylor shares a particular story of a gym-goer who, while making steps towards health by choosing green tea over soda, may still fall short due to misinformation about dietary choices. This scenario becomes a catalyst for a broader discussion on how we approach personal change and growth. Baylor emphasizes the necessity of taking significant, well-informed actions when pursuing new goals in 2025. He argues that firmly recognizing the need for change must be paired with definitive action to avoid repeating past disappointments. Through anecdotes and introspection, Baylor outlines how doing one's best with available information and being open to questioning previously held beliefs can lead to meaningful personal evolution. His insights provide a roadmap for listeners aiming to successfully navigate their resolutions, adapt to new information, and set the stage for long-lasting change. Key Takeaways: Starting action, however small, is essential to initiate personal change and avoid the cycle of repeated resolutions. Utilize the best information you currently have; waiting for the perfect moment or all-encompassing knowledge can stall progress. Understand that mistakes are part of the learning curve, and trial and error is often the best teacher. Continuously question and reassess your beliefs as you acquire new information to facilitate personal growth. Embrace the necessity of change and be willing to adapt as you strive to improve yourself. Notable Quotes: "He was excited about the fact he had juice and the fact that he had these seemingly green teas." "You have to do the best you can with the information that you have available." "Be okay with questioning your beliefs. Be okay with seeking out new information." "When you know better, do better. And when you do better, help somebody else do better." "It's a long year, but it's going to fly by fast. If you don't take action, let's make it happen."

Welcome back to Drummers on Drumming! Today, I'm thrilled to share a conversation with a true force in modern drumming—Ilan Rubin. You've heard his incredible work behind the kit with artists like Nine Inch Nails, Danny Elfman, Angels & Airwaves, Paramore and so many more. But Ilan is not just an outstanding drummer; he's also a passionate educator, and his latest project proves just that. He's recently released his instructional book, Start Somewhere to Go Somewhere, and trust me, it's not just another drum method book. In this episode, we certainly discuss the book, but we dive deep into Ilan's philosophy on practice and technique in a way that I personally haven't heard him talk about before … and why he felt compelled to share his unique perspective in an already crowded field of drum education. I have the book and ive been able to spend some more time with it since recording this episode and I can say first hand, it's worth it. So without further ado…here is my chat with the youngest rock n roll hall of fame inductee, Ilan Rubin. In this episode of Stand Firm Parents, Jake McCandless discusses the challenges and importance of being intentional about discipleship within the home. He emphasizes the need to start somewhere, even if it's small, and shares practical advice on how to integrate faith into everyday family life. Key Discussion Points: The Overwhelm of Discipleship: Many parents feel overwhelmed by the idea of discipling their children, often leading to inaction. The importance of being intentional about guiding children in their faith. Starting Small: The episode's main message is to "just start somewhere." Jake shares a personal story about having a Bible study in the car with his daughters, highlighting that discipleship doesn't need to be perfect or elaborate. The Imperfection of Discipleship: Waiting for the perfect moment or method often leads to missed opportunities. Jake discusses the challenges of maintaining regular family Bible studies and how he overcame the paralysis of perfection. Practical Steps for Parents: Begin with simple actions like reading a Bible story at bedtime or having faith-based conversations. Tailor discipleship activities to the age and maturity level of the children. Integration of Faith into Everyday Life: The goal is to fully integrate faith into every aspect of family life, rather than compartmentalizing it into specific times or events. Jake emphasizes the need to find natural ways to incorporate faith discussions and practices into daily routines. Biblical Foundation: Jake references Deuteronomy 6, which instructs parents to impress God's commandments on their children throughout daily activities. The episode encourages parents to be consistent and intentional in sharing their faith with their children. Encouragement to Parents: Jake encourages parents to take the first step, regardless of where they are in their faith journey or how old their children are. The episode closes with a reminder that every intentional action taken to guide children in their faith starts with a simple step.
Ka mua, ka muri. To walk into the future facing backwards. What exactly does that mean? If you let your imagination explore that idea for a second you might start to get an idea. How do we, specifically pākehā New Zealanders, move into the future with an eye on our history, personal, national, religious etc, to help guide our actions. What implications does this have for how we live? Join Petra Bagust in this episode as she explores the whakatauki of ka mua, ka muri. Petra's first guest is Dr Alistair Reese. Alistair gave the dawn service kauhau/sermon at Waitangi Day 2024 and has a PhD in Theology titled 'Reconciliation and the Quest for Pākehā Identity in Aotearoa New Zealand'. Petra is also joined by Elliot Collins. Artist, teacher and Dr (another one!), Petra wanted to talk to her friend Elliot to find out what it means to him to live as a treaty partner in day to day life. I had the incredible opportunity to sit down and chat with my very dear friend, my personal trainer, Cristin Waite from "Waite Training". Cristin's run story may have started out in 2022 but running has always been there. Cristin, a former collegiate swimmer at Springhill College, shares how running for conditioning versus running with purpose is essential. She also shares how much of a difference training with a group versus alone is. Cristin also shares how Waite Training started and how vital strength training is to the running community. My dear friend is also one of the strength coaches for RYS Training Program. She does an incredible job keeping our runners/walkers strong on the pavement. Cristin who is also the Race Director for the Go Run, shares a little bit about the race. We will definitely have her back on to talk about the race and what it means to our community! She is a mom, a wife, a personal trainer, an event planner at the University of South Alabama, and now a runner, and here is Cristin Waite's Run Your Story.
