This week IHC's PEI team sit down with the incredible Joely Proudfit, PhD. Joely holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in political science with an emphasis in public policy and American Indian Studies from Northern Arizona University and a B.A. in political science with emphasis in public law from California State University Long Beach. She serves as Director of the California Indian Culture and Sovereignty Center (CICSC) and Department Chair of American Indian Studies at CSU San Marcos. She shares with us her personal journey from her humble childhood beginnings to her appointment by President Barack Obama to the 2016 National Advisory Council on Indian Education. She's truly a shining example of how much we can all accomplish with hard work, dedication, and with the kindness and generosity of others. Acorns to Oak Trees' founder, Season Goodpasture, is a marriage and family therapist and is Maidu and Paiute and a member of the Susanville Indian Rancheria in Northern California. Season's husband, James Goodpasture, is Cupeno and he and their four children (Harley, Huntley, Holley, and Hudson) are members of the Pala Band of Mission Indians in Southern California. Season's passion has been to serve tribal families and communities through infrastructure and capacity building and programmatic development in areas of child welfare, education, mental health, and tribal court. Acorns to Oak Trees was inspired by Season and James's oldest daughter, Harley, who has Autism Spectrum Disorder and their journey of discovering the Regional Center and navigating its system. Wendy Schlater is a dual citizen of the La Jolla Band of Luiseno Indians and the U.S. In March 2019, Wendy was elected Vice Chairwoman for her Tribe, her third term as an elected tribal leader. Wendy also serves as Program Director of La Jolla's Avellaka Program addressing safety for Native women on her Reservation. In this capacity, she organized the La Jolla Native Women's Advisory Committee to host the first annual Inter-Tribal Sexual Assault Awareness Walk in 2010, which continues today traveling from reservation to reservation. One of Wendy's passions is to assert and utilize tribal sovereignty to bring much needed services to her people. Wendy is also a member of the San Diego County Sexual Assault Response Team Committee and a Tribal Subcommittee member of the Violence Against Women Act Committee. Wendy is a founding Board member of a non-profit tribal coalition, the Strong Hearted Native Women's Coalition and the National Indigenous Women's Resource Center, for which she currently serves as NIWRC's Board of Directors' Treasurer. NIWRC is a national tribal nonprofit dedicated to restoring tribal sovereignty to increase Native women's safety. Throughout her career, she has advocated for Native LGBTQ/2Spirit youth and adults, tribal youth, health, education, land, environmental issues and safety for Native women, developing innovative ways to create Tribal responses and programs respective of her people's customs and traditions.
